The Merchant's House is located in north east Corfu, in the island's 'oldest village.' Restored back in 2010, it now has 3 suites with double bedrooms & 1 twin room, each with bathrooms. There's also a breakfast/guest room & guests can use the main kitchen & private terrace & garden as well. The house has received numerous press awards as the 'Best Place to Stay' on Corfu since 2012 & (having been privately owned & managed as a B&B up until 2020) is now available for up to 8 guests to stay.

The space
In the 'Heritage Protected Village of Old Perithia', 'A Designated area of Natural Beauty', you'll be staying in one of the islands most highly awarded and most talked about accommodations, three faithfully restored houses of Venetian architectural origin, recreated into 4 luxury suites, a guest/breakfast room & use of the main kitchen - each maintaining the history and style of c1650 when they were last restored.
The village is set at 408m just below Mount Pantokrator (Corfu's highest mountain at 906m) it is Corfu as it was, 'The real Corfu' and apart from the day trippers, you practically have the village to yourselves from around 3-4pm to 10am each day, then can escape during the day on walks, to the beach, or to explore the rest of the island.
At night return to clear night skies, the sound of nature and any of 4 tavernas in the village for dinner. A peaceful night, and then lazy mornings on our private terrace & garden, or in the adjacent breakfast room.
The village is gently coming back to life as more and more properties are restored and land acquired, you'll get a free book each 'Old Perithia, the History and self-guided walking tour of the village' and be staying in the house where the Anglo-Dutch couple Mark & Saskia are credited with Old Perithia's revival and many awards and articles in the press and travel guides. Their charming house manager Dina will be there to check you in and answer any questions & help ensure your stay is the best we can make it. Olga, the delightful house keeper will also be on hand if needed.

Guest access
Guests have access to the entire house, 3 double bedroom suites & 1 twin bedroom each with en-suite bathrooms, There's also a breakfast /guest room and private garden/terrace, plus full use of the main kitchen & dumb waiter. Just to note: The owners accommodation will be closed off during your stay. The boiler room is only accessible to Olga [the housekeeper] & Dina [house manager] as it houses the main systems for running the property.

Other things to note
Parking is in the rough parking area at the top of the village. If not using the -8-seater, then on arrival you can drive down to The Merchant's House to drop your stuff, but then please park back up after. We have a space for 1 or 2 cars on the small track that runs to the left just before the house and after the first taverna (Ognistra) where you can use a the drop off point or to park a single vehicle if you wish. Please do not leave the cars there as it's a public track
We endeavour to minimise our environmental impact, so the property has a full waste recycling system. Please do not put anything in the loo's/wc's as this may cause damage.
We have two rubbish bins by the well, one for recycling another for everything else which the housekeeper will empty midway through your 7 night stay or twice if staying for 2 weeks.
We also primarily use LED lighting and guest will receive complimentary 'BeeKind' shampoo, shower gel & soap on arrival, all of which are biodegradble and a % of our purchase of these products goes to research to help bees.
As you'll be staying in an ancient mountain village, wifi, electricity and mains water are all present and work well most of the time, however the wifi signal can vary and if there are storms it's possible the electricity may drop off temporarily, but 95% of the time all is well. Alternative wifi spots are available in most of the nearby tavernas and local towns/villages by the sea.

Location

Corfu, Peloponnisos Dytiki Ellada ke Ionio, Greece

Old Perithia is one of the key walking points on the island and often used en route to or from Mt. Pantokrator (Corfu's highest mountain that sits just 400m above the village). Do take a look at our photo album to get a feel for what's in store and what to expect!
The village is set in a living 'Chelsea Flower Show' recreated by nature after the village was all but abandoned in the late 60s. It is often visited by artists and painters and during the day various 'tours' and day trippers come to the village to explore its history, walk around the mixture of restored and ruined Venetian houses & eat in the local tavernas. Usually by 3:30-4pm it all quietens down and only people arriving for dinner come up to Old Perithia, although they'll then return to their homes or villas elsewhewre as the B&B is the only place to stay so far in Old Perithia. Effectively you'll be getting the 'village to yourself' at night and getting back to the sounds of nature, breathing fresh mountain air, peace and calm, away from the holiday crowds (until the next day brings more visitors to the village).
You're in a great location for walks, for exploring the island and some of the best beaches are in the north east corner, including Agios Stephanos as some refer to as 'Kensington on Sea.'
If there's anything you need to know, Olga is there every day to ask, so we hope to make your stay that extra bit special with local knowledge and years of looking after our guests as best we can.

Hi, it's Mark & Saskia and thanks for checking us out. Here's a short intro about us and the experience of staying at The Merchant's House so we can getter better acquainted... We're an Anglo-Dutch couple and decided to restore three ruins in Old Perithia and turn them into the islands first B&B back in 2010. In doing so we started to bring a practically abandoned heritage village gently back to life. Thanks to nature returning when the village was nearly abandoned, it reclaimed the whole area so that the village today is now a 'Designated Area of Natural Beauty.' It's also 'Heritage Protected' and one of the best loved villages of Venetian architectural origin on the island. 'Corfu's Oldest Village'. What we wanted to achieve was to enable visitors to get straight under the skin of Corfu. Into relaxing & enjoying their holiday asap without the usual trials and tribulations of discovering a new place. ie matching guests to experiences and things they'd like to do, eat, see or enjoy. We've been fortunate to get some incredible press and awards from newspapers, magazines and travel guides worldwide, including being no 1 on TripAdvisor B&Bs and Inns over the years. We've also now managed to bring the village back from approx. 10% restored to over 35% restored or in process today, so far... The village makes for a slightly different style of holiday, as at night (apart from people having dinner in the tavernas) you get the whole village practically to yourselves - daytimes by the sea or whatever floats your boat, including boat hire ;) We have a housekeeper Olga, and a house manager Dina. Dina gets to meet you at the airport or the house and show you around. With Dina & Olga you get great service and truly local and honest advice. We'd like you to have the sort of experience we'd like to have been given when we visited Corfu... let's hope we make that happen for you too! Thanks for thinking of us for your holidays! Mark, Saskia, Dina and Olga
