South facing, small, traditional Shepherd's hut with views, internal shower, compost toilet, log burner, electric heater, kitchen area. 2 mins by car to Kendal. Scenic walks over limestone Scars from doorstep. Breakfast basket supplied. Comfortable double bed, single bunk above.
Kendal is an attractive market town with an eclectic range of shops, cafes, restaurants.

The space
Please note we are NOT on a bus route. You must have a car or rely on taxis into town (2 mins). NO PETS ALLOWED! NO FIREWORKS!
Our Shepherd's Hut is a unique place to stay: It is situated on the junction between the rural road to Underbarrow and a bridle-way named Gamblesmire Lane which leads to Cunswick Scar and Scout Scar, so it's ideally situated for country walks.

It is fully insulated with sheep's wool so is snug, comfortable and warm. There is a microwave, electric kettle, toaster, indoor shower and a compost lavatory. There is a thermostatically controlled electric heater and a Hobbit wood burning stove for cosy evenings in.

The stove heats the hut up very effectively, and we often chuckle when people light it on a warm evening and then fling open all the doors and windows when it gets as hot as a sauna. A good tip is to open the little window above the top bunk as this created a cooling draught of air without being too cold.

You can walk out of the door and along Gamblesmire Lane, a footpath that leads to Scout Scar and Cunswick Scar.

There is an electric shower, cold water in the bathroom sink and hot water in the living area. In frosty weather the water supply has to be turned off and guests use the bathroom facilities in the house. There is bottled water in the hut for drinking.

There's a seating area outside the hut with a table and chairs and a small firepit. It is situated in it's own little garden, quite near to our house where we also host Airbnb guests and are on hand to help you with suggestions for exploring the wonderfully green, gentle hills of the Lyth and Winster valley with their numerous green lanes and lovely views.

The hut is next to the fell footpath gate and there are horse riders, mountain bikers and walkers going by at times, so expect to enjoy saying hello and having a pleasant chat. In summer, there are Lakeland Hound Trail races up the fell. This is a traditional Lakeland sport and very exciting to watch if you get the chance. (It has nothing to do with fox hunting, by the way).

The living space in the hut is 7 feet by 16 feet, so it's about the same size as a small towing caravan but with much more charm and character! Shoes off indoors, please! Don't drain crockery on the lovely wooden sink top. Please dry up with one of our best tea towels instead!

Where you’ll be

Kendal, Cumbria, United Kingdom

Please note, that WE ARE NOT ON A BUS ROUTE and you will need a car to get here from Kendal. There is a car rental next to Kendal station.
Public transport will take you to the main tourist areas, but not to the most beautiful and scenic. It is also very slow and frustratingly infrequent. Convenient as a base for the southern Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales, our hut is in a secluded position in our garden with easy parking on the driveway. There is a scenic footpath beside it named Gamblesmire Lane that leads to Cunswick Scar, Scout Scar and footpaths to Underbarrow and Crook.
Kendal market town is a 2 minute drive by car. It has lots of interesting small shops, a market on Wednesday and Saturday, a fabulous Climbing Wall, the Brewery Arts Centre, interesting historic buildings and yards and excellent cafés.
Sizergh Castle and Levens Hall are a few miles to the south of the town.
There are 5 award winning country inns that serve great food within a 10 to 20 minute scenic car journey of the hut. The nearest, at Underbarrow 10 minutes away is The Black Labrador.

Although it relies heavily on the tourist industry, there are still many wild and wonderful places you can roam in the Lake District without seeing another person! It also has more Michelin starred restaurants than London and has a plethora of fantastic, ambient pubs, cafes, cocktail bars and restaurants. There are numerous festivals throughout the year and lots of guided adventure activities. I really enjoy living here because life is slow, travel is scenic and each valley has it's own, unique atmosphere. I enjoy helping guests make the most of their time here and can recommend great places to explore, eat and relax. I've lived here all my life so know all the best places to visit and am happy to be contacted by guests for information and advice.

There are lots of fascinating places to visit, a wide range of outdoor pursuits to enjoy and a wealth of cultural opportunities ranging from museums, galleries, country houses, historic villages, theatres, cinemas and a vast array of excellent cafes and restaurants.
Please note that to see the Lake District or Yorkshire Dales, it's best to use a car as public transport is slow and infrequent.
We hope guests will eat at the nearby award winning country pubs in the Lyth Valley at Underbarrow, Brigsteer, Crosthwaite and Bowland Bridge. There are fantastic farm shops at Sizergh Barn and Plumgarths nearby. There is also a fabulous supermarket called Booths in Kendal. It uses local producers and has an outstanding selection of great food and drink. On Wednesdays and Saturdays there is a market selling home baked produce, a wonderful bread stall, fruit and veg, fresh fish and street food.
