Beautiful, cosy, oak-framed house designed by Roderick James Architects set in a secluded, wooded position with spectacular views of the Sound of Mull. Large open plan living area with wood-burning stove, loft-style master bedroom and bathroom.

The space

This beautiful family house was designed and owned by Roderick James, Architect, and his wife, Amanda Markham. It was the first of a series of oak framed 'evolution' houses which can be built with a central core, and extended as required. Guests who are thinking of building their own houses may be able to visit some of the other seven or eight houses designed by Roderick in the area.
The ground floor is essentially open plan with two bedrooms (one en-suite) opening off the living area, and a twin bedroom (probably better for children) accessed from either outside, the rear double bedroom, or the shower room.
A staircase rises from the living area to the new kingsize master bedroom and bathroom
Roderick and Amanda work from a small house (Tigh na Mara) within the same 9 acres, but Tigh Darach is the house in which our extended family also stay when they visit us in Scotland.
It faces due South looking down and across the Sound of Mull, with a breakfast veranda to the East and a cocktail veranda (!) to the West.
There are normally a couple of roe deer living in the grounds, and the house is regularly visited by Pine Marten and Swallows. Seals and dolphins are often to be seen in the Sound with the occasional otter, eagles and other birds of prey.
The house is well insulated, double glazed, and heated by a ground source heat pump with underfloor heating and solar photo-voltaic panels.
Please note that we can only get satellite broadband in this area and it can be rather intermittent. There is also a mobile phone booster, but again this is as good as we can get and it's not perfect! O2 is best here, with Vodaphone a close second. We have a special rate for one couple, using one bedroom of £175 per night.

Guest access

The house is only let in its entirety with 3 day minimum periods, and generally one week minimum stays over Christmas, New Year, Easter, the summer holidays and half term periods. There are seven acres of wooded grounds to explore plus easy access to the privately owned Drimnin Pier and shoreline.

Interaction with guests

Both the owners and housekeeper live nearby and are available to give help and advice.

Other things to note

Drive 15 minutes from Corran ferry towards Strontian, turning left well before you get there to Lochaline. Single track road to Lochaline. Turn right before you enter Lochaline to Drimnin. Drive 10 miles down this road to shoreline at the end, pass red telephone box, immediately turn right onto private track, Tigh Darach is second gate on right.

A perfect getaway in gorgeous countryside. Exquisitely designed and obviously well love property. We had the best time, going for walk, eating brambles, jumping in the Sound of Mull off the rocks. a swing in the back garden that kept our 9 year old contingency quite happy, and good beds for people with bad backs, ALWAYS a plus. We are already figuring out if we can return next year.

This was our second stay and we'll definitely be back. The house is filled with light and its design, with the table at the centre, makes it enjoyably to live in. The children loved the secret door, the swings, and exploring the garden. We all loved the isolated setting. We made trips via the ferry at Lochaline into Mull and the adults enjoyed the walk to Doirlinn above the house. So much to do if you're feeling adventurous but it would be just as easy not to travel far. Amanda and Roderick were helpful and accommodating hosts with wine and champagne for us to enjoy on arrival. Thanks again!

We loved the house, the garden, and the situation overlooking the Sound of Mull. We felt immediately at home, and could create good meals in a well-stocked kitchen. The surrounding area is absolutely stunning and a day trip to Mull is perfectly easy. Although you may wish to just stay put and enjoy the quiet, and ample disconnection from the outside world. Amanda and Roderick were very welcoming and helpful at every step. We enjoyed a tour of one of their other houses and admired their enormous vision and skill for house building. Thank you for contributing to a relaxing holiday with my parents and in-laws. We hope to visit again!

We stayed at Tigh Darach for my Dad's 70th birthday and it was absolutely perfect. The house is so comfortable and well equipped - particularly the kitchen which is important for the foodies! There's everything you need to make a celebratory meal for seven - I can testify to that! We went to Tobermory on the wee ferry which was a brilliant day out, and we can recommend Cafe Fish for lovely fresh seafood. The Whitehouse in Lochaline is also fabulous, that's where we went for my Dad's birthday lunch and it didn't disappoint. Walking around the estate was great fun. Stunning scenery and breathtaking views everywhere. And we saw a bit wildlife: golden eagles, sea eagles, and roe deer. We were all equally happy sitting in just appreciating the ambiance and scenery. It was incredibly relaxing. I loved it and hope to return for longer next time.

Amanda's house in the highlands has to be my favourite place to stay. She's always so welcoming. The house is one of the best places to relax, unwind and connect. It's a very spiritual and soulful place to stay. This was our second time staying at Amanda's beautiful home and we will go back when the opportunity presents itself!
