Description

The space

New Listing! (December 2015)

Cozy up to our fireplace and help yourself to free unlimited coffee from our espresso-capuccino-cafe latte machine while enjoying a foot massage in this romantic, cozy studio apartment with traditional Japanese flourishes, ideal for a young couple passing through Kyoto as part of a larger trip, or the money-conscious solitary traveler. The sunny, third-floor unit is in a quiet, corner building which includes an incredibly comfortable, large (200 x 160cm) bed and comes complete with a cozy (artificial but optionally heat-generating) fireplace.

Rental includes all-access to the building's roof, with its spectacular "front-row" view of Daimonji. (The building has been used by film crews and the NHK television network because of its great view.) The roof is a popular meeting place for "happy hour" with our other international guests in units in the same building for nighttime star-gazing. It's a must-see regardless of the season but especially on clear nights, and during cherry blossom/fall colors seasons.

The unit also includes the free use of two bicycles (with locks), perfect for rides through the Philosopher's Path, along the Kamo River, or for rides into downtown.

The bathroom/shower is of a size standard for most Japanese hotels. A modern, western-style toilet is in an adjacent, private room.

Our space includes Pocket WiFi (with chargers) a combination washer-dryer machine (detergent included), and a kitchen stocked with essential, non-perishable snacks for when you arrive, along with refrigerator, gas stove, microwave-toaster oven, coffee machine, etc.

The main room features a high-definition television and all-region DVD player stocked with movies of local interest, local guidebooks, and wireless Internet access.

Guest access

Guests have private access to the entire apartment and full access to the roof, shared by up to two other apartments.

Two bicycles are provided at no extra charge.

Interaction with guests

We are a family business, and eager to do everything we can to help enhance your stay. We invite you to let us know if you have any special requests during your visit to Kyoto. We’d be only too happy to tailor our services to your specific needs.

The neighbourhood

Ideally nestled in a richly green part of the city adjacent to Yoshida Mountain, the area is abundant with beautiful shrines and temples, some, like the 10th century Shinnyodo Temple, just a few blocks away. A little further but still well within walking distance are Ginkaku-ji, the Temple of the Silver Pavilion, and Philosopher’s Path. Heien Shrine, the Kyoto Zoo, Gion, and Kiyomizu-deru are short bus or bicycle rides away.

Within a few blocks are a 24-hour grocery store, bakeries, a pharmacy, post office, a 24-hour convenience store.

Getting around

The apartment is a less-than 10-minute walk, the No. 5 and No. 100 City Buses offering a direct line to Kyoto Station via Downtown (No. 5). Other buses (No. 93) conveniently connect to other parts of the city, including the Golden Pavilion and Arashiyama. Taxis are in abundance in this neighborhood, and are inexpensive.

Other things to note

We service three apartments in the same building, enabling several couples/families the opportunity to simultaneously book several private apartments at once, all located on the second and third floors of the building in this quiet, beautiful neighborhood. (We will also be opening an entire home a few short blocks away in mid-January 2016.)

House Rules
Check in is anytime after 3PM

•Smoking is prohibited inside the apartment. However, there is a smoking area at the 1st Floor level in front of the art gallery.
•No pets allowed – guide dogs excepted
•Please refrain from loud noise after 10:00pm
•No shoes inside the apartment; please place shoes in the genkan (entranceway) shoebox, or at the front door; slippers provided
•In consideration of our Second Floor neighbors, please do not use the washer-dryer and foot massage between the hours of 11:00pm-6:00am
•Parties and additional overnight guests are not permitted. (The Japanese pretty much never invite friends to their homes, but rather go out drinking. For that reason a noisy party would be seen as very disruptive to our neighbors.)
•Please be sure to return the pocket WiFi and its chargers prior to your departure or you will be charged to replace it.
•Please make a reasonable effort to pick up after yourself. This was never an issue until one guest basically trashed the place in their rush to leave. For 99% of you, this goes without saying.
•Check-out time is 10:00am. We require several hours to clean and prepare the apartment for our next guests, so if you overstay without prior arrangements and approval for a late check-out we reserve the right to charge you for an additional day.

Stuart's apartment is a 15min walk (5min cycle) to Ginkaju-ji and there are direct buses to Gion and Kinkaku-ji. The bikes came in very handy as cycling around Kyoto can often be faster than taking the bus! It was great to cycle along the Philisopher's Path (5mins from the apartment) early in the morning before it became busy. Another plus for the apartment is the very comfy bed! Stuart was quick to reply to messages and overall it was a nice place to stay.

A nice apartment in a nice neighborhood. We enjoyed walking to the local park and going to the local cafe (Mo-an), as well as riding Stuart's bikes to Philosopher's Path. Communication with Stuart was always direct and quick. Thanks Stuart!

Super comfy & felt like home. Amazing with communication & even provided bikes for transport! If you want to experience Kyoto like a local I highly recommend Stuart's apartment. If you've got large luggage, just a friendly note that the staircase is outdoors. I have a fear of heights but you get used to it after a while :) I highly recommend staying here as there are plenty of options for transport, quite a few sights to see nearby. The plus side is that there is plenty of room for luggage in the apartment itself & the shower is amazing!!!

Clean and comfortable. Everything is just as described. Easy to get to city attractions by taxi or public transportation (use maps or download a Kyoto public transport app to figure out routes).

Stuart was extremely helpful prior to our stay in his apartment, always answering questions promptly in detail and actively finding out things on our behalf. The flat is very cosy and filled with ornaments and bits and pieces. As promised the bed is big and incredibly comfortable. Kyoto is a difficult city to get around anyway, but staying such a distance away from the nearest metro stop had a noticeable impact on our ability to get around. We spent several hours a day on the bus. If you plan on doing some serious site seeing and getting out to the main temples, I'd recommend staying nearer a metro stop (although if you're a confident cyclist, the bikes should be able to get you to either of the nearest lines in a reasonable amount of time).

Very nice place and a great location if you want to be in a real Kyoto neighborhood. Easy access to a grocery store and to sights like the Philosopher's Path. We enjoyed walking around and exploring. The stairs were difficult to deal with with a baby, so a heads-up on that if anyone reading this has a baby.

Stuarts place was in a great location, close to public transport the place was warm and cosy and has an excellent bed, Stuart had a good amount of contact with us and even went the extra mile to provide basically any movie we wanted which was nice. A must stay in Kyoto!!
