House Rules

Basically all we ask is that you leave the Retreat as you find it and replace any breakages. We are dog-friendly but request that you keep your dog off the furniture and the bed - it will probably want to spend most of its time lying on the beautiful under floorheated slate tiled floor anyway!

Lovely place, lovely surroundings. Short walk to any/all local amenities and a short walk from lovely countryside. If your looking for a quiet, quirky place to stay this is for you.

It’s so cool to tell your friends you’re staying in a working churchyard. It’s a lovely size for 2 and it’s in a great location. The hosts pre-stay information was spot on and very helpful. The only criticism would be is that it’s a tiny bit tired in places and could do with …

Disappointed with this review. I have just been over to the Retreat myself and; installed WiFi, fitted an external ariel, upgraded to a Smart bigger TV, painted the window alcoves and doors, replanted the dead leylandiis at the front with bay tree and hydrangeas! And it could still do with a little TLC. Gather from private feedback that that the cleaner missed a bit of plaster on the towel rail. Seriously! Please see earlier reviews!

The retreat was a lovely place to stay in a great location. Unfortunately we did have some issues with the electricals e.g. tv, radio and hallway lights not working. The village of Wirksworth is a perfect place to get away but the retreat itself is looking a little tired.

Response from John:
Sorry for your problems. The previous airbnb guest broke the tv aerial and didn't tell us and the cleaner had no time to get a replacement before your arrival. The radio is working fine and the bulb has been replaced in the hall. Dont agree - and neither do other guests - that the Retreat is looking tired. Please see other reviews!

A fantastic, quirky little retreat for two. Centrally located in the Peak District, close to lots of things to do. Wirksworth itself is a lovely little market town and The Retreat is two minutes walk from the centre. We had a fabulous stay - a cosy Christmas away from it al…

Ourstanding location. Took by the cosy and quirky chapel which is really well equipped and well presented inside. Waking up in the morning to a very nice and different view of the grounds the chapel lies within. If you like to dissappear and want time away, this is perfect!

Response from John:
You were our ideal guests! Booked the day before but the cleaner was ill, so Adele happily made up the bed herself and did without flowers and fresh milk. So glad you liked the Retreat and welcome back anytime - reduced rates for returnees!

We thought it'd be really scary staying in a graveyard! But it felt really cosy and safe. The chapel felt like home and the underfloor heating was amazing. The bed was so comfy and all the information provided by John about walks in the Peak District and local amenities/restauran…

We are a family of four living in rural France. We love it here but also love returning to Wirksworth where we used to live. We bought the Retreat in 2012 and have enjoyed renting it out to holidaymakers since. There's not many places you can stay in a graveyard!. We hope you enj…
