About this listing

Private and comfortable!
Nestled under the canopy on the edge of the rainforest, Ebenezer is a tranquil beauty spot. The charm of a fresh water stream is a stones throw from the Cottage.
During the wet season this gently bubbling brook becomes a spectacular water course.

The space

The Cottage is an open plan design with shingle clad high ceilings. It utilises its Nth/Sth orientation for effective air flow ensuring a comfortable space even during the hotter months.

There is a queen sized bed and a trundle bed (a single and a three quarter single) in the sleeping loft and two sofa couches in the indoor living area. These can become double beds if required.

An additional outside shower under the trees is ideal for rinsing off after the beach.

Established gardens host visiting butterflies, bush hens, birds, goannas and cassowaries. Even the odd wild pig with sucklings is sighted foraging in the undergrowth.

Guest access

The whole property is yours to enjoy apart from the administration section located under the main deck.
Vehicles are kept in the car parking area fifty meters from the Cottage. This ensures you get an uninterrupted garden view.
Arrival in daylight hours is ideal. Please bring a torch if you plan on a late arrival.

Interaction with guests

I'm social and will stick around if you need direction or help otherwise I'll leave you to enjoy your privacy.

Other things to note

Ebenezer is not recommended for unsupervised children.

The Cottage is self contained and has all the things required to make your stay comfortable. Sheets and towels are supplied.

Food shopping is ideally done in Mossman or Cairns before arriving. You will find the selection greater and the prices friendlier.

We are off the grid and run on alternative power combining solar, micro water turbine and generator depending on the season. High usage power devices like hair dryers are discouraged.

Ebenezer Cottage backs on to the Daintree and we loved falling asleep to the sounds of the rainforest every night. It is open to the air and we enjoyed feeling the balmy breeze throughout the house, and hearing geckoes chittering up on the roof shingles (or in our underpants if we left them on the bathroom floor). Our host Kornelius was a kind and thoughtful fellow, who was ready for a chat but happy to give us all the privacy we needed. Kornelius presented the cottage immaculately with many beautiful little touches like fresh flowers on the coffee table, a spray of feathers on the kitchen wall, an arrangement of seashells on the bathroom windowsill, home grown pawpaws laid out for us. Kornelius built the house himself and we admired the craftsmanship and ingenuity that went into it. My engineer husband was interested in the electricity and water systems Kornelius had set up. The cottage had a very comfortable queen bed under a mosquito net, bathroom with hot shower, fully equipped kitchen with a gas stove and oven, washing machine, and wifi. It's close to the beach and a pub but you really need a car to get around the region, in which there is lots to see and do. Guests should be mindful that properties in this part of Australia are not on mains water and electricity, have no municipal rubbish collection service, no mobile phone reception and limited satellite internet service. This is where you go for a digital detox.

Kornelius' beautiful dwelling is a rainforest haven - the property had everything we needed to get back to nature with comfort and amenity (lights, hot shower, a fully functioning and beautiful kitchen, a bed with mosquito net, and even wifi if you just can't live without it). Waking up to the sounds of the birds and the views of the rainforest canopy right outside the cottage was a truly wonderful experience. Kornelius himself is an absolute treasure, and a true delight to meet. We would highly recommend Ebenezer Cottage to anyone looking to escape the modern world for a while. Just be sure to take some insect repellant if you're attractive to mosquitoes, as the cottage is essentially open to the outside.

If you're looking for somewhere off the beaten track where you can connect with the rainforest and its wildlife then Kornelius' place is for you. It's a spectacular wooden house nestled perfectly in the trees surrounded by a rainforest 'garden'. There's an abundance of wildlife living around you making all the noises of the rainforest during the day and night. Maybe it's not for the faint hearted as there are no windows; although, Kornelius has thoughtfully provided roller blinds at most of the openings and a mosquito net. There's a generator for power with plenty of fuel, torches, fluffy towels and a washing machine. Rainforest Heaven. Staying there was a wonderful experience for our family. Kornelius is a very special person - the perfect host.

When we left Ebenezer, the wonderful off-the-grid rainforest hideout built by Kornelius, after 4 amazing days, we all felt transformed... And sorry we hadn't planned for a longer stay. It's hard to express the unsettling, yet liberating experience for a family to let go for a few days of all the cell phone notifications, TV "entertainment" and other noisy distractions... And to find a new rhythm, a new balance. We cannot recommend it enough. It may not be for everyone, but if it's the right experience for you, you will love it. We certainly did. Those few days in the Daintree forest were truly the highlight of our family trip in North Queensland! Both kids (6 and 8) and parents enjoyed the hospitality of this back-to-basics comfortable wooden house, thoughtfully conceived and very comfortable, completely open to the nature that surrounds it. Sleeping in the (very noisy!) silence of the forest and waking up with the birds around us is unforgettable. And so was the great pleasure of meeting Kornelius himself, a kind and humble amazing character. I wish we'd had more time to get to know him better. This is the stuff memories are made of. If only we had more time! We can't wait to come back, and discover even more of this wonderful region.

A beautiful setting and lovely space. Truly in the forest with natures sounds abounding. We had a great 3 days. Be ready for an off-the-grid experience! (unfortunately the power system was out of action when we stayed so had generator 5/6 hrs a day - no big deal, but a bit annoying) A great base to explore the area and have a quiet retreat at the end of the day. Recommend the place to those who want a one of a kind place, want a quiet escape and can handle no mod cons.

At heart I'm an adventurer. Relationship to the world around me is a never ending source of interest and fascination.
Being in the Daintree started as a means of living a simpler life but as we all know, life is not simple with its many unseen complexities.
Today Ebenezer reflects an evolving harmony between my environment and my inner world. I count on your stay leaving you with more than a comfortable roof over your head.
