About this listing

Gorgeous yellow Victorian, brimming with art, surrounded by beautiful gardens, a pool, and stunning mountain views. Walking distance to Kloof Street Restaurants, Long Street Bars, Lion's Head, the Company Gardens, Iziko Museums... and so much more!!!

The space

This is a unique house! Lots of people say that, but in our case it is absolutely true. Ruimzicht (yes, the house has a name) means beautiful view. It was built in 1895 by the contractor of the Cape Town City Hall. The Cape Town City Hall is internationally recognizable as the building from which Nelson Mandela gave his first public address as a free man. The architect, a corrupt colonial par excellence, double-ordered many of the decorative features of the City Hall and used them in his private residence. We have marble fire places, internal columns, Edwardian tiles and eccentric flourishes throughout. The house is also old, with some cracks and lots of character.

This used to be home of two South African painters and printers, who are collected in the National Gallery and many Provincial Galleries. We have incredible art on every wall throughout the house.

Guest access

Your private space is your room and your bathroom (not ensuite, through the kitchen, about 12 meters from the bedroom). You will also be able to access the entire downstairs floor with a sitting room, billiard room, dining room, kitchen, mini-gym, and laundry room. You will have access to the garden and the downstairs front patio (complete with views of Table Mountain and Lion's Head). The garden is particularly special with lots of food and fruit trees, abundantly blooming roses, a Mexican-tiled pool, sitting areas and hammocks. It is very green, lush, overgrown and inviting.

We also rent out a second room and bathroom as well. Many of our guests enjoy teaming up with their neighbors to rent cars, tour and socialize.

Interaction with guests

Your hosts are happy to spend as much or as little time with you as you want or need. You just let us know. Cups of tea and games of pool are always welcome!

Other things to note

We have trellised grape vines over the outdoor patio, from which we make our house wine. It's not going to win any awards, but upon your arrival, we will insist you sample our domestic product!

Erin and Leo are consummate hosts who will make you feel welcome with their homemade refreshments, give you insiders' tips on the city, illuminate you on the history of South Africa, and lend you whatever odds and ends you may have forgotten to pack. Their home is an aging beauty that may lack certain modern efficiencies but makes up for them with oodles of charm. With its central location and quiet setting, their home is a perfect place for any solo traveler (or pair) looking for a home base while exploring Cape Town.

Erin and Leo are wonderful, welcoming hosts. The house itself is full of quirk and charm, and it's close to Kloof St and the rest of downtown. Would definitely book here again!

Wonderful hosts and gorgeous historical house. You would have a hard time finding a more hospitable stay in Cape Town. Ideal for immediately feeling 'at home', with some of the hottest restaurants and bars a walk away - this is a true gem not to be missed! A million thanks to Erin and Leo for their warm welcome, amazing tips, homemade wine (!) and bona fide generosity.

When you hesitate to book this accomodation, don't! It's a really special place on an awesome location. Eric and Leo are wonderfull; always friendly and full of good recommondations about things to do or visit in town. It's really nice that the house is located in a fairly quiet street, while you are on lively Kloofstreet within 5 minute walk and within 10 minutes on busy longstreet. Perfect to explore Cape Town!
