Great location
95% of recent guests gave the location a 5-star rating.
Unique hay loft/coach house with fascinating Sherlock Holmes history as at one time owned by Harry Baskerville. Fully equipped kitchen with little balcony leading to open plan vaulted living space. Large ground floor bedroom with kingsize bed. Shower room.

The space
The Hay Loft has been tastefully modernised and is fully equipped to make your stay relaxing and enjoyable. The property sleeps 2 comfortably although a z-bed, cot or child's bed can also be put up if required. The Coach House dates back to 1835 and originally housed horses & a coach on the ground floor and a hayloft on the first floor. The coachman Henry (known as Harry) Baskerville lived there from 1932 until he died in 1962 aged 91. He was the coach driver that drove Conan Doyle around Dartmoor while researching the developing story for The Hound of the Baskervilles with his friend Bertram Fletcher Robinson of Ipplepen. According to an Ashburton resident who nursed Baskerville in his old age she was shown a first edition of The Hound of the Baskervilles by his daughters with a note on the inside cover saying 'with apologies for using the name... '
The main house that sleeps 6 can also be holiday let through airbnb.

Guest access
Access to the Hay Loft is through the double gates to the left of 'Dorncliffe' the main building on 18 West St. The gates lead to a courtyard and the Hay Barn is found behind Dorncliffe. The front entrance is to the right of the Hay Barn/Coach House building. The double gate access is not wide enough for a modern car as it was only built as a coach entrance and was used by Harry Baskerville, who drove Bertram Fletcher Robinson & Conan Doyle across the moors in 1901 - at that time Baskerville was coachman to the Robinson family in Ipplepen.

Other things to note
On arrival, once luggage has been dropped off, there is a car park within 100 metres of the property at a cost of around £3 for 24 hours, free before 9am and after 6pm, Sundays and bank holidays.

Ashburton, United Kingdom

The Hay Loft is in the foothills of the Dartmoor National Park. Ashburton is a thriving town with plenty of interesting shops and places to eat all within walking distance (and unusually NO chains!) The property is within 10 minutes of the open moor and within 45 minutes of the coast. There is plenty to see and do both in Ashburton itself, closeby and further afield.

My family emigrated from South Africa when I was 7 years old. I have lived and worked in and around London and Birmingham but have been in Devon for the last 20 years, moving to Ashburton ten years ago when I remarried. It is a beautiful part of South Devon & so close to the incredible Moors and Coastline. I worked as a nurse for almost 25 years, but since leaving the NHS have reignited my creative passions & am now an artist and sculptor. My husband Chris works on exciting building projects in and around Ashburton and although he was a geologist & spent time overseas in South Africa, he was born and has lived in the west country for most of his life. Last but definitely not least, I have a beautiful daughter, Alice, who has completed her 3rd year at Heythrop, University of London attaining a 2-1 in Study of Religions. I am incredibly proud of her, not only for receiving those results and for all her hard work, but also because she has developed into a strong willed, wonderful person who is great to spend time with & who will do well in whatever she chooses to undertake simply because of who she is.
