A cosy retreat for 2 with log fire, river views, romantic ruins and wildlife, a Victorian Tin Mine in the Tamar Valley AONB. Ten minutes walk from the village with 2 pubs, shop, art gallery and branch line railway station. Nr National Trust Cotehele. All bookings include complimentary cancellation insurance.

The space

Surrounded by natural woodland, the cottage is the former mine captain's office of a Victorian tin mine. It is grade II listed and has been sympathetically converted to provide comfortable accommodation for two people. The mine itself is a Scheduled Ancient Monument, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it lies within the Tamar Valley AONB.

Guest access

The guests will have full use of the cottage and its facilities and access to the footpaths around the mine.

Interaction with guests

Nick Cole, the owner, lives on site (in the former Miners' Dry & Boiler House) and will be available to answer any questions and assist with any problems.

Other things to note

There is restricted mobile reception - limited EE reception is available - however there is a landline in the cottage which accepts both incoming and outgoing calls. There is WiFi but the speed is quite slow.

The Smithy is approximately 15 metres away but is screened by vegetation. The gardens are not enclosed but the vegetation provides a degree of seclusion and privacy will be respected by the guests staying in The Smithy and by the owner, Nick, however you might be paid a visit by his dog Jess!

The Count House is approached down a single track well-made-up public bridlepath which is fine for most vehicles, with a parking space adjacent to the cottage, but if you have a very low slung sports car or other vehicle you are concerned about please check suitability. There is additional parking just off the road at the top of the bridlepath for such vehicles (a few hundred metres away from the cottage).

Complimentary cancellation insurance is included. In the event of the party not being able to take up the pre-booked holiday due to death, injury & illness of any guest or close relative or fiance(e) of a guest (with the exception of suicide or deliberate self injury, intoxicating liquor or drugs), all monies paid less £25 and all AirBnB service charges and commission fees incurred, will be returned. All claims must be made in writing within 3 days of the occurrence of the event and be supported by documentary evidence which is satisfactory to the insurance company. In the event that the cancellation is not covered by our insurance, provided sufficient notice is given and we're able to successfully re-let the dates booked all monies paid will be refunded less any costs incurred.

I stayed at Okel Tor mine for a writing retreat, and could not have picked a better location for it! Such a calm, quiet space with gorgeous views of the river valley. The cottage itself is very cosy and has a super comfortable bed. Will definitely visit again!

Highly recommend staying in this beautiful location. The cottage was perfect with thoughtful touches like milk being in the fridge for your arrival, fudge and soap too. This stunning, peaceful location is the perfect place to recharge. Bring binoculars for wildlife watching too.

Very friendly hold and excellent location. Calstock is a very beautiful part of Cornwall, a hidden gem and the Count House is the perfect place to explore the surrounding countryside.
