Description

The space

Our house is on a quiet street in Great Bedwyn. We have plenty of parking and a large kitchen that overlooks a lovely garden. There is no television in the bedroom, but we have a wide selection of lovely books! If you would like to watch TV, just ask - you are very welcome to use the living room which has big, squashy sofas, a wood burner and a large TV. You are also free to relax on the deck or in the garden. We also have a secure garage for storing bicycles if you have them and we are biker friendly. We have a big fluffy cat who may come and say hello to you.

Guest access

Tea and coffee on arrival. Breakfast is served in the kitchen, or in your room if you prefer. We are happy to make you tea and coffee any time, and you are also welcome to use the kitchen to make your own drinks.

Interaction with guests

We will be here to welcome you and will be available during your stay if there is anything we can do for you, but will respect your privacy and be unobtrusive. Please feel free to ask us if you need anything, or have any questions about the surrounding area.

The neighbourhood

Great Bedwyn is a pretty, rural Wiltshire village between Marlborough and Hungerford. Situated on the Kennet & Avon Canal, the village has a pub, The Three Tuns, which serves excellent food, a post office with bakery, a shop, church and a mainline railway station with lines running direct to Paddington and the West Country. There is a wonderful Michelin-starred restaurant a mile away, a fish and chip van on Tuesdays and many other excellent pubs and restaurants in the surrounding villages. We can book tables for you prior to arrival. The area itself is full of historical interest - just minutes from the house are the Grade I Listed Crofton Beam Engines, Wilton Windmill, a thatched 13th Century chapel, the K & A canal (you can see narrowboats from our garden) and Savernake Forest. The village and surrounding area is perfect for walkers, bikers and cyclists to explore, with National Cycle Routes running through the village. The closest towns are Marlborough (which hosts an internationally famous Jazz festival in the summer) and Hungerford, which are seven and five miles away respectively. Also within easy driving distance are the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Avebury and Stonehenge, Silbury Hill and West Kennet Long Barrow, Salisbury Plain, Highclere Castle (Downton Abbey), the Caen Hill flight of 27 canal locks and Wadworth Brewery in Devizes, the Ridgeway and Uffington White Horse. This part of Wiltshire is also a hotbed of crop circles in summer! The cities of Salisbury and Bath are around an hour's drive away.

Getting around

There is a fairly good bus service to Marlborough from the village. Trains run regularly to Hungerford, Newbury, Reading and London and to the West Country. There are a number of local taxis in the neighbouring town of Hungerford - Hungerford Town Cars, 1st Direct Cars or Hungerford Taxis.

Other things to note

The village is very peaceful, with no light pollution or traffic noise, but the railway runs through the village and although we are double-glazed, you may hear the odd train as one or two run through the night. We are happy to accommodate any special dietary requests, such as soya milk or gluten-free bread, if you let us know in advance. Taxis to and from local pubs and restaurants can be arranged.

IMPORTANT NOTE: We welcome guests any day of the week, but we both work full-time so check in is generally from 17.30 and check out by 08.30 Monday to Friday and the house is not accessible during the day.

Weekends are more flexible; check in time is from 15.00, check out by 10.30. Other check in/out times may be possible by arrangement but we cannot provide guests with keys, so please ask if you have any specific requirements or contact me before making your booking.

Kate was a great hostess and made us so welcome - everything was clean, warm and tidy - all that a great B&B should be! The view from the back veranda over the canal was delightful. It is the perfect base for the Harrow restaurant in Little Bedwyn where we celebrated our anniversary. We would definitely book again. Neil and Liz

My stay at Kate's was great. The room was just what I needed for a short stay on business. Everything is as described, the room is comfortable and I was made to feel very welcome. I would definitely stay again! The surrounding area is beautiful and there is so much to see and do - Kate was great in helping me with walks.

Kate and Dave were lovely hosts. We stayed a night before our barge trip. They have a beautiful home and it's only a short walk to the local gastro pub and village shop. Our room was lovely with a very comfortable bed and a private bathroom with a great shower. I would definitely recommend to friends.

This place is outstanding. We have never been made to feel so welcome anywhere. Kate's home is immaculate. We were made to feel welcome from the moment we arrived and Kate went out of her way to arrange a taxi and to book a table for us. The local information in the room is well thought out and includes post codes for directions etc. Can't wait to stay there again

Had a really nice night's stay with Kate and Dave (& Cassy, the cat!). The room was exactly as described and Kate & Dave couldn't have done more to make me feel at home. They're both really lovely to chat to, both really interesting folk and they have some amazing classic artworks on their walls, so the home in general is a cool place to stay. Communication was perfect, easy, and Kate even made me a yummy breakfast to order. Above and beyond! I was passing through on a bike ride from Bristol to London (their house is on NCN4), and great Bedwyn is a really pretty little village with the Kennet Canal and lovely, quiet country lanes. There's a great pub - Three Tuns - just up the road that does cracking wines, ales and food, so all in a really swell, authentic AirBnB stay. Highly recommended!
