Price is for the use of 1 bedroom. There is a $20 charge for the use of the 2nd bedroom, per person/night. We can assure you of a pleasant and comfortable atmosphere and accommodations. I will greet you personally to show you the nuances of our historic home. We would enjoy being your hosts.

The space

Our space is like taking a step back in time. You will enjoy completely private space within the historic section of our home. Enter from the front or back. The living area is on the ground level, referred to as an English Basement (den with fireplace, kitchen with fireplace, laundry & half bath. From there, one flight of stairs to a private foyer and then another stairway to the third floor bedrooms, office and full bath. An additional living room on the second floor is available upon request. Guests have full access to a covered outdoor room with picnic table, gas grill and casual seating. Great area to cookout, entertain a small group, play games, or just hang out and enjoy our ever evolving garden. There is abundant free parking in the front and rear of the home.

Guest access

Guests can enjoy the outdoor room and also my ever evolving garden. Our neighbors occasionally gather on the porch next door on pretty evenings and our guests are always invited and welcomed if they would like to join in. Guests may host small gatherings in the outdoor room or inside as well. We only ask you keep it to a small number (4 to 6).

Interaction with guests

We are always available and encourage our guests to approach us with anything they may need or answer any questions. Your comfort is our priority when you are here. We are acutely aware that some guests traveling for business may desire less interaction. Some guests vacationing may prefer more interaction. We pretty much let our guests determine how much that is.

Other things to note

We have most of what you may need for an infant or toddler such as baby gates, high chair, bouncie chair, plastic eating tools, sippy cups, and of course safety plugs for electrical outlets and cabinet safety latches.
A few toys too. We are walking distance to restaurants, the historic Commodore Movie Theater, Children's Museum, The Pavilion, and many outdoor entertainment activities such as Harborfest, Virginia Wine Festival, Holiday Parades, Fireworks, two Annual Art Shows and much more. The new Waterside Shopping District is just a 10 minute ferry ride across the river.
We provide beach chairs, umbrella, towels, beach toys, floats, and a cooler for our guests to use for day trips to the beach or elsewhere. Our home is a great central location for day trips east or west.

We had an awesome stay at Dina's place. This is by far the best vacation rental that we've experienced so far. The location is excellent, the place is super clean (no dust), the amenities were superb, and the hosts were fabulous! We had our own parking spot and we could easily walk to the ferry which takes you to Norfolk (The Waterside), and two blocks away is a great small gym (Fleming's Gym). There's also a nice cafe (The Coffee Shoppe) across the street from Fleming's Gym. There are several other cool shops and restaurants that are walking distance from Dina's place. This is also a great home base driving to places like Virginia Beach, Old Dominion University, and Newport News. We gave this accommodation 5 Stars, and if we could give it 6 Stars, we would. Thank you Dina and Tom, for being such awesome hosts! Byron and Janelle.

We chose Portsmouth to be near the beach, but away from the busy beach crowds. The house is located close enough in a quiet historic town. We were a quick walk from a ferry ride to Norfolk to get great food, or a quick walk to get dinner at "Fish and Slips". The house was beautiful and had everything we needed, with lots of history and character. Dina and Tom were great hosts and made our very first AirBnB experience a great one. We would love to come back to visit.

Dina and Tom's historic home in Portsmouth is a great launching pad for your fun in the TIdewater area. Downtown Portsmouth is very manageable for families and quiet. There is even a little playground for kids about 100ft down on her street. 25min to the bay, 25min to Virginia Beach, 10min to downtown Norfolk; there is a lot there for the taking. The space itself is very nice with a very historic decor. You have the run of the ground floor and the 3rd floor bedrooms. Those portions are privately cordoned off from Dina and Tom's residence. The livingroom is adorned with historic items, books, etc. There's a very authentic feel to the age of the property. Kitchen has everything you need though, full sized fridge, laundry room, etc. Bedrooms on the top floor are perfect for a family or for one. The home also has a great yard, patio, grill - all of which we used as much as possible. Dina has everything for a contingency: beach umbrella, high chair, pack and play, monitor, etc etc etc. Not much else to say, wonderful trip, great property, wonderful hosts. We're plotting our next stay.

Response from Dina:
We are so sorry about the WiFi. On Sunday the storm caused us to loose connection for a short while. Unfortunately, when I was trying to figure that out, I disconnected a plug that I was unaware of until much later. Anyway, WiFi is still a problem so gonna have Geek Squad out here again. We loved having you as our guests.

Lots of stairs, be aware of that, and the toll to and from Norfolk, VA Beach. We ended up Ubering everywhere because it was less than tolls and parking, just something to be aware of. Dina's home is historic and full of interesting things that are a pleasure just to be around. We enjoyed our time there very much.

The house and neighborhood in Old Town Portsmouth is an awesome experience! The location was just a hop skip and jump from the airport, downtown Norfolk (via Ferry or Water Taxi), coffee places, and stores. I brought my I-Pass so travel around the area was worry free (Tunnel Tolls). Williamsburg, Virginia Beach, and may other places were easy to reach. Most enjoyable was the rich history of the house! Everything was perfect!

We are natives of Portsmouth, however have lived in other cities in Virginia for most of our life. This home was previously owned by my husband’s grandfather, who was the Curator of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum. The home was then passed to my husband’s father. Many artifacts from long ago are still displayed as they were when previously owned. We purchased the family home in 2001 and began a restoration. Subsequently, the house was rented to military families for 14 years. In 2014 my husband and I decided to make a change from the suburbs. We moved into the home ourselves. We have not looked back for a second and no regrets. We love this home and our Olde Towne neighborhood. Recently we built an addition onto the back of the house. We now live mostly in that part of the house. After I heard about Airbnb, I decided I would enjoy sharing the historic part of our home and the rich history of our city with visitors. Doing so has been an amazing and wonderful journey for us and we will continue. When time allows, I enjoy cooking, gardening, going to the beach, boating and repurposing furniture and other whimsical items. My husband enjoys boating, fossil hunting, carving driftwood and just hanging around in his wood shop. We both very much enjoy hosting Airbnb visitors.
