Your guide to Aberporth

All About Aberporth

Nestled on the southern edge of Cardigan Bay among the rolling farmland of West Wales is Aberporth, a small coastal village boasting spectacular beaches, verdant countryside, and plenty of wildlife-spotting opportunities. Aberporth Beach — comprising Dyffryn Beach and Dolwen Beach — is a hub for surfing, sea kayaking, and fishing for bass and mackerel, with soaring seaside cliffs adorned in lush greenery cocooning the shore. At low tide, conditions are ideal for swimming and exploring the rocky tide pools dotted around the sand. Atop the cliffs, you’ll find a carving of a leaping bottlenose dolphin. Seals and dolphins are a common sight off the coast and in the waters of Cardigan Bay.

This is an area known for its fishing, where fresh seafood is a staple of local dining, from traditionally wrapped fish and chips to tender scallops showing up on menus throughout town. Freshly caught lobster and crab are especially popular in the area, and you can even tuck in on the beach at the village’s pop-up seafood shack.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Aberporth

During the summer months, balmy temperatures and blue skies make conditions ideal for enjoying nature walks, swimming, surfing, and kayaking, making this a popular time to book Aberporth holiday cottages. The colder months are also a great time to visit, with quieter beaches and fires crackling in local pubs. Every year, the town holds its Aberporth Boxing Day Swim, where hundreds of people take a bracing dip in the icy water. Large crowds of spectators line the shores to watch those brave enough to swim. Throughout the year, a variety of markets pop up in Aberporth and neighbouring towns, including Aberporth Country Market, held in the Village Hall, and Cardigan Country Market, featuring a variety of local produce, homemade sweets, and crafts.

Top things to do in Aberporth

Tresaith Beach

Just east of Aberporth lies Tresaith, a tiny village with a breathtaking beach. Sheltered by towering cliffs, the beach boasts sweeping golden sand and a magnificent 30-metre waterfall that cascades into the sea — an especially spectacular sight to behold after heavy rainfall. At low tide, Tresaith is also an exceptional swimming spot. Lifeguards are on duty between June and September.

Aberporth Beach

A rocky headland bisects Aberporth Beach into two beaches — Dyffryn Beach to the west and Dolwen Beach to the east. The golden sand and deep blue waters are ideal for swimming and kayaking. During low tide, the rock pools along the shoreline are exposed, creating beachcombing opportunities. Bottlenose dolphins are also frequently spotted frolicking in Cardigan Bay.

Internal Fire Museum of Power

Ten minutes’ drive away in Tan-y-groes, the Internal Fire Museum of Power showcases the history of steam and internal combustion engines and their roles in the development of the modern world. Ongoing exhibitions display a range of diesel and steam engines, vintage radio equipment, and telephones. In the Exchange Rooms, you’ll find displays covering 100 years of telecommunications history.
