Your guide to Aberystwyth
All About Aberystwyth
Tucked between the Cambrian Mountains and Cardigan Bay in West Wales, Aberystwyth is a coastal town brimming with rich history and breathtaking landscapes; it’s also a vibrant university town. Aberystwyth’s expansive promenade spans the length of the town, passing some of its most significant landmarks and providing sweeping views of the coast. On stormy days, you can watch as lightning makes its way across the water from Ireland. At the centre of the promenade, the Royal Pier extends into the sea and features restaurants, arcade games, bars, and a nightclub. Aberystwyth is also home to a number of cosy cafes and local eateries featuring freshly caught seafood and traditional Welsh fare, from bara brith to warming cawl (stew).
Historical symbols and landmarks dotted around the town include Aberystwyth Castle, perched on a hilltop overlooking the sea and dating from the 13th century. Wandering around its grounds, ruined towers, and rooms offers a unique insight into Aberystwyth’s past.
The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Aberystwyth
Summer is the most popular time to book holiday cottages in Aberystwyth, as visitors line the sandy shore and a refreshing breeze blows in off the Irish Sea. Spring and autumn bring mild temperatures for taking in the promenade, but packing an umbrella is always advisable. Provided that you bring some extra layers, winter in Aberystwyth can be a cosy affair, peppered with bracing beachfront walks and pub lunches by the fire.
The Aberystwyth Farmers Market takes place on the first and third Saturday of each month and features homemade preserves, baked goods, and wine, among other local goodies. In September, the annual autumn food festival is held in the town centre with food stalls, crafts, and entertainment, and the festive season kicks off in November with the Aberystwyth Arts Centre Christmas Food Fair, when twinkling lights illuminate the pier and local shops.
Top things to do in Aberystwyth
Constitutional Hill
The trek up Constitutional Hill will work up a sweat, but the sweeping views of the sea are well worth it. Rising dramatically from the sea, Constitution Hill provides an unrivalled vista of Aberystwyth and Cardigan Bay. On clear days, you can see up to 26 mountain peaks, extending over much of the length of Wales. There is also a historic electric cliff railway to take you to and from the summit.
Aberystwyth Castle
Aberystwyth Castle is set against the backdrop of the glistening sea and lush green meadows. The striking stone ruins are those of a castle built in the 13th century. While only remnants of the outer ward remain, the landward gatehouse largely remains intact. The castle is open for visitors to explore the site and its grounds.
Ceredigion Coastal Path
The Ceredigion Coastal Path stretches for 96 kilometres along the Cambrian coastline between the Teifi and Dyfi estuaries. Winding through varied landscapes and terrain, including secluded coves and rugged clifftops, the route provides uninterrupted scenic views and wildlife-spotting opportunities. Seabirds and dolphins are common sights on the water, while razorbills, fulmars, and guillemots can be seen overhead.
