Places to stay in Aborlan
Are you up for a Palawan adventure? There's no better way than to go to an off-the-beaten-path beach vacation! Surya is located inside a 2-hectare beachfront community in a remote but accessible village in Aborlan, just the next town south of Puerto Princesa. The front boasts of amazing views of the ocean, the sunrise and the moonrise and the back, of the mountains and the sunset. :) If you're up for some authentic tropical island adventure, you are most welcome to stay with us!
The COTTAGE is a 76 sqm well-designed thatched-roof loft space that is right in front of the beach. - It has a porch for relaxing and dining. - It can accommodate up to 6 guests. - It has a spacious private shower and toilet. - It offers the basic comforts of a home (air-conditioning, cable TV, hot shower).
The roads going to Surya is quite an adventure. Going out of Puerto Princesa city, you will pass by coastal towns, the famous Acacia Tunnel (a magical row of Acacia trees that form into a tunnel along Puerto Princesa South Road), rice fields, and a 5-km dirt road to end your journey. When you reach Surya, you will be welcomed to a two-hectare private, fenced, and well maintained beach community. Apart from a couple of private houses, the rest of the area is filled with nothing but coconut trees :) There are mangroves in some parts of the shore and outside the community fence. If you’re looking for more adventure, feel free to explore them. You might see wild animals like monitor lizards, squirrels, different bird species, and maybe even snakes so explore with caution. Brownouts occur from time to time, but a generator is available so don't fret :) The locals are friendly and speak Tagalog and English.
  • Beautiful accommodation at the amazing place . Staff was super kind and friendly. Meals they prepare was excellent and the owner was one of the most caring and most helpful people I've ever met. Thank you one more time. Totally recommend

  • Our stay was memorable. The sunrises were awesome and the sunsets soothingly peaceful. Everything else in between was just right. We loved how this resort was cozy, secluded, and away from the typical tourist spots – peaceful. The friendly, attentive staff (Angie, Alma, and Jen) and JM, our gracious, accommodating host factored highly in making our stay incredibly satisfying and relaxing. There were seven in our family group. Four of us stayed in this cottage and three in the the loft cottage. We all agreed that our stay was even better than we thought we could have expected, based on the already outstanding reviews we read before booking Surya Beach Resort. Thank you for making our stay in Palawan a memorable experience. We hope to be back soon! Conrad & Ali

  • This place is an absolute gem. As described in the listing it is pretty remote but it’s absolutely perfect if you’re after much needed rest and relaxation! JM and his staff really go the extra mile to make your stay enjoyable. Beautiful sunrise and sunset views every day. It was such a treat to sit on the beach and watch the sunrise, have breakfast, explore Surya and then return for a lovely dinner. The food was simple yet authentic. I felt as though I was at home. Book this place if you want to get away from everything. Perfect for a couple’s getaway!

  • Couldn’t speak more highly of our time at Surya. It is an oasis housing your own private beach access and exceptional service. All I wish is that we would have booked it for longer! The amenities are unbelievable, super clean, and the staff are the sweetest. There are sand fleas, but that’s to be expected! Just bring along some big spray and you’ll be great. You’ll enjoy the sunrises and walks along the beach!

    Sara2020-01-15T00:00:00Z
  • Everything as described. We had three great days, the staff is very nice and helpful. The beach is really nice and very deserted. Unfortunately we couldn't snorkel and the resort is a little out of the way. So perfect for relaxing and sunbathing. Thanks again!

    Jessica2020-01-08T00:00:00Z
  • It’s very beautiful place!! I recommend this place for everyone! I can’t forget this place!!:) thank you for everything!

The Amazing Villa is a beautiful summer house, set in spectacular natural surroundings. It's a place you can call home. A place to chill out, to recharge and to get inspired. Far away from mainstream tourism, yet so beautiful it makes you wonder how this still exists. The Traveler's room is for those who appreciate that some truly exceptional experiences in life do not need to be expensive. If you have a story to tell, if you thirst for the things that matter most in life, we want to meet you.
The Traveler's room forms part of a beautiful summer house in a spectacular location overlooking the South China Sea. The Amazing Villa sits on a large private property with 2 km of private coastline (of which 600 meters are white sandy beaches). The mountains in the background - covered with rain forest - form a spectacular backdrop. At the Amazing Villa we like to eat fresh and healthy foods, so we have a large organic garden with vegetables, herbs and spices. We also keep chickens (free range) for eggs and meat. Freshly caught fish can be had daily from a nearby fisherman's village. We hope our 2 Labradors and 4 cats will make you feel at home the moment you arrive. During the daytime you will most likely be enjoying the surroundings and the beach. At night you will fall asleep, soothed by the sounds of the waves and the rain forest. The house comes with two gardeners, a maintenance man and a beach janitor (for daily cleaning of the beach and its surroundings). You are welcome to do your own cooking, using our facilities (we cook on wood fire), but you may have to bring most of your ingredients from Puerto. The small shops near the Villa offer only basic things. If you wish, the hosts can also cook for you. My wife Theresa is very talented and highly passionate about cooking. She does wonders with all our garden fresh ingredients. Ask us about our meal plan ! The Traveler's room is our most budget friendly room. It has a double bed, wooden flooring and large screened windows with a view of the ocean. The shower and toilet are separate from the room (not en suite). We have built several private hideaways around the house, where you can enjoy the view and the sea breeze with a book, a cocktail or a cup of tea. Or just have a lazy afternoon nap in a hammock. Other amenities of the house include a gym, a petanque court, a cocktail bar, a yoga platform/view deck and an outdoor kitchen. Planned amenities for the near future are a Zen Garden, a wood fired brick oven and a zip line that will take you from your balcony straight to the beach. We are leading a comfortable yet low impact life style. We produce our own veggies and meat, make our own virgin coconut oil, natural bug repellents, yogurt and chocolate. We cook using only the freshest ingredients straight from our garden. We avoid chemical additives and processed foods. If you wish to learn or participate in our organic farming, you are very much welcome. We have some live stock to tend to as well (cows, goats, water buffaloes, chickens). To help keep our carbon footprint low, we invite all our visitors to plant one tree each. Either a long living fruit tree or a tropical hardwood tree. We provide the seedlings and make sure the tree will prosper. Our place is ideal for: * Families with children * Couples looking to spend quality time together in paradise (hidden away from the rest of the world) * Nature lovers * Adventure lovers * People who favor a healthy life style Possible activities: * Beach & Ocean (swimming, snorkeling, fishing, paddle boating, bonfire / BBQ, star gazing) * Mountain River (swimming, fish spa, BBQ) * Jungle (hiking on old mountain trails, native hunting trails, bird watching, trip to waterfalls and relaxing in hidden lagoons)
We live in a part of Palawan that is exceptionally beautiful and as of yet totally untouched by mass tourism. Many of our neighbors are indigenous people (of the Tagbanua tribe). The Tagbanua still live very close to nature and possess a wealth of knowledge about plants from the forest, natural and spiritual healing and nature in general. Knowledge that has largely been lost in modern "civilised" society today.
  • Theresa and Herwig's Villa was truly amazing! If you are a fan of nature, look no further! I enjoyed all of the seven days I spent here. Walking throughout the vast garden, to find the perfect addition to lunch and/or dinner, and cooking over the wood stove, was a treat! The nearby private beach was spotless. The cats and dogs on the property are all super friendly and great to hang out with! I was privileged to spend some time with Herwig, hiking about some of their additional properties and had a blast! I was also able to sample some of Theresa's yummy cooking. I felt at home here and wish to return again, sometime very soon!

  • Absolutely stunning place. It’s a natural place that you can enjoy with full privacy. Herwig and Theresa are wonderful hosts, and Theresa is an incredible cook. We especially loved the beautiful sunset. If you are looking for a natural place far from tourism, this is perfect for you. Also, the natural shower that belongs to the traveler‘s room was really cool.

  • The stay at the Amazing Villa was the best holyday I have ever had - pick up at the airport, wonderful hosts, amazing food, a whole beach for our own, coconuts on the beach, rooms with amazing fews and comfy beds and the best cocktails on whole Palawan - thank you for this experience.

  • Our family (including 2 grandparents and a toddler 2.5 years old) enjoyed a 3 day, 2 night stay at the Amazing Villa! We booked TWO rooms - including the large family room Gotu Kolu and initially the Traveler's room (later moved from the traveler's room to a room with its own bathroom as it became available). Perfect for a family and rooms were gorgeous and comfortable. The setting is a Villa overlooking a gorgeous bay in a remote setting. The beach is beautiful and was shallow enough with perfect gentle waves for our two-year old to play in as she is learning to swim. She loved it! My husband and I took advantage of the snorkeling gear and small bangka boat to paddle out to see the corals. At night you can enjoy full view of the stars. Transport was easy to arrange through Herwig who was able to pick us up easily in Puerto Princesa. The food Theresa and staff prepared was consistently delicious and plentiful. The accommodations are very comfortable and stylish. We were able to cook for our daughter whenever necessary and vegetables and health options were readily available. It was particularly nice to have the flexibility to easily order meals or cook/prepare our own snack. Herwig and Theresa were welcoming, warm, kind and accommodating with requests. Our only regret is that we did not have enough time to do the hikes!! A good reason to plan a return trip in the future. We loved our stay. This is a slice of paradise – still mainly untouched.

  • Herwig and Theresa's place is incredible. Exactly as described and even better if you can believe it. Private beach and breathtaking scenery all while staying at their (yes it is amazing) Amazing Villa. The food was really something else. The servings are plentiful, there is variety, and it is all as fresh as can be. I was impressed day after day and looked forward to each meal. I arrived on a late flight (12:30am) and Herwig's son picked me up from the airport, took me out for a drink and gave me a place to rest until my check-in the next morning. Talk about above and beyond. I had planned on just hanging out at the airport until a ride could be arranged. Not on Herwig's watch. Herwig, Theresa, Amos, and everyone else are amazing, accommodating, and interesting people to say the least. You will enjoy engaging conversations if you so choose and if you don't believe me, then just read the other reviews. Enjoy your stay here and don't think twice about booking.

  • This place is Amazing. Quiet, near to the nature, no signal, no traffic, just the most important things which you need in vacation. The local hosts are helpful. The fireplace is the best. The simpliest dishes are ten-times better than usually are. I offer the place if the people want relax, go away from the community, and enjoy the privat beach.

  • The place has everything that we wanted, it is an really awesome place! We are pleased to have the chance of spending our last days in the Philippines there.

    Belen2018-03-21T00:00:00Z
  • Idyllic and beautiful is how I would describe the Amazing Villa. My boyfriend and I were there for 2 days and it was the quiet break we needed after visiting El Nido. Herwig is a great host and conversationalist. And Amos and Tito were extremely helpful and courteous and made sure that our stay was the best. The meals, while pretty pricey, were delicious and were the healthiest that we've eaten so far during our 3 week trip in the Philippines. Our animal companions were adorable as well. The Labradors (Gulmay and Turbo) and the cats spent loads of time with us just chilling and playing. Since we were the only guests at the Villa, we had a whole beach to ourselves. Apart from an attempted boat adventure with Gulmay it was a lot of fun. We would definitely recommend this place to others for a scenic and relaxing break and we would like to come back with friends. Thanks Herwig, Amos, and Tito!

For all who like adventures and nature! The Kaibigan Soul Camp open huts – we call them Turtles – are very close to the beach with a little terrace, a hammock and the best view over Cabuyao bay and the sunset. An economic alternative for low budget travelers. You will love these beautiful bamboo structure! A “Comfort island”, our unique open-air premises, offers two showers and two bathrooms for sharing. eat.stay.love. **For more information visit our website.**
Be inspired by the natural Philippine beach life, the richness of nature and an imaginative, creative and peaceful environment. Experience the moment, the natural tranquillity and adventurous activities, diverse impressions and perspectives. Listen to the sound of the sea, become acquainted with new cultures and people and enjoy delicious food and positive vibes during your much longed-for timeout. Slow Food Restaurant & Bar We will prepare all dishes and drinks in accordance with local culinary traditions and locally sourced ingredients. The focus on sustainable and organic eating is healthy for everyone. (full board 1,000 PHP / half board 750 PHP per day) Leisure Time Sun, beach and the sea are the basic ingredients for a pleasant holiday. At our camp there are numerous other things that also make the trip unforgettable: We offer you yoga and cooking courses or organize excursions by boat and basketball games with the village team. Those who want to climb a coconut palm and then skillfully crack open the nut themselves with a machete, can learn that here. Recreational Activities One very authentic way of exploring the bay is with a little baruto boat and paddle. Other shorter activities are swimming and rambling. And those who simply want to relax can do this at any time in our garden, in tree houses or in original chill-out zones on the beach. There is also a little street art gallery with local and european art works. Those who want to test their boundaries can go on a guided jungle tour with Tribu hill people we are friends with, including sleeping outdoors. Or they can take part in a fishing excursion lasting several days, out in the open sea with an outrigger boat belonging to a local fisherman. Listen to your art! As street art is very close to our hearts it will be a vital part of the Kaibigan Soul Camp. We especially appreciate artists who deploy their creative skills to interpret socially relevant content and send their message in their individual language of art. Street Art Rebelzer from Hamburg [Germany] was the first street artist to paint a wall at Kaibigan Soul Camp. We are looking forward to any who will follow his example!:)
In Tagalog, the language of the Philippines, the word “Kaibigan” means "friendship" or "amorous liaison", depending on how it is pronounced. Both translations reflect our relationship to foreign countries and cultures. The term also symbolizes a sense of togetherness, which is very important to us. Our undertaking would never have succeeded without the help of many friends. Their personal input on location, as well as their experience and suggestions, were full of valuable information and advice. This energy can be felt everywhere and is one reason for the very positive vibe in the camp.
  • The motto “Eat. Stay. Love “hits the nail on the head: from the first moment of the check-in, to the way the camp was designed with a lot of love, to the great hosts, Elli, Pascal & Team, everything fits together harmoniously! Not to mention the charming, idyllic and secluded beach, which rounds off the experience in the camp perfectly and definitely contributes even more to the recovery of body & mind (Body & Soul). The only "downside" could be for people with the urge for constant availability that there is no reception and WiFi. However, if you can't do without it for a few days, you should reconsider whether you are ready for the Soul Camp and the associated "deceleration"! :)

  • We loved this place, the attention to detail that has gone into the whole place is really magical. All of the hosts have truly put both their hearts and souls into this place. The food was amazing, the location is remote and untouched. We hired a motorbike and drove from Puerto Princess to Kaibigan there are so many totally deserted beaches Along this coast. It is really special. We will defiantly come back but next time for longer. I would highly recommend staying at this beautiful place with these really lovely people!

  • I cannot say enough good about this place. We left Manila not sure what to expect, and Kaibigan was a wonderful way to start our adventure. Every driver knew exactly where the location was which was very helpful for us, we showed up as the sun was setting and were greeted immediately by the lovely staff, and the other guests were all just as friendly and kind. The food they prepared was out of this world, and there was always fresh coconut juice and cold beer available. The turtle hut we stayed in was very nice and clean, and they cleaned the sheets every day for us which was unexpected and thoughtful. There are mosquitos around, but the nets kept them all out while we slept, falling asleep to the sound of the waves. You can have a massage on the beach, sit in a hammock along the beach and read, play cards and games with the hosts and guests at night, for us it was really the perfect slice of heaven. This is definitely what I would call “glamping” you are outside entirely, the showers are beautifully designed but also outside, and there are neighbors, dogs barking, and roosters crowing at night (which we didn’t mind!) but if you’re going to need quiet at night/aircon/WiFi/a door on your space then consider another place to stay. We so totally loved our time here - when we come back we’re coming HERE!

  • Amazing place and amazing people. Loved my time there and great to disconnect from the world with warm folks, fun activities and great food for a few days. Highly recommend for those looking to try something different and unplug.

  • wo days alone with the sea and fisherman were a taste of paradise, I loved living outdoor, enjoying hammocks and bamboo furniture as well as the company of our guests An untravelled side of Palawan where you will enjoy endless beaches for you alone, yet just a couple of hours ride away from the airport

  • This was a great little cabin with everything I needed. The bed was very comfortable. The aircon was good. The room had a desk and chairs with a double powerpoint conveniently located above the desk for charging. Je was a great host who was friendly and hospitable. She also helped me with questions I had about the area. They let me use their bicycle which was useful to explore the area. The grounds felt safe with a front gate which is locked at night, and a couple of family dogs who keep watch at night. The family house is within the grounds, across from the cabin, so I felt able to get help if ever it was needed. There is a small stall right across the street where you can buy snacks & beverages. Catching a trike was easy enough by walking a short distance - ask Je to show you where. I had a nice stay here in Narra. Thanks Je and family :)

The Amazing Villa is a beautiful summer house, set in spectacular natural surroundings. It's a place to chill out, to recharge and to get inspired, far away from mainstream tourism. A place you can call home. The Amazing Villa sits on a large private property with 2 km of private coastline (of which 600 meters are white sandy beaches). The mountains in the background - covered with virgin rain forest - form a spectacular backdrop.
The Tongkat Ali room forms part of the Amazing Villa and is quite spacious. It has a king sized bed, a natural style shower in wood and pebble stones, separate toilet, a ground floor terrace on both sides of the room and a view of the ocean. Her cooking has been featured in two national newspapers as well as on local TV. She offers an amazing meal plan (advance reservation required) which is usually the highlight of a stay at the Villa. Her unique flavors continue to impress the most discerning palates from around the globe. We produce our own veggies and meat, make our own virgin coconut oil, natural bug repellents, yoghurt, chocolate and cheese. We cook using only the freshest ingredients straight from our garden. We avoid chemical additives and processed foods. If you wish to learn or participate in our organic farming, you are very much welcome. We have some live stock to tend to as well (cows, goats, water buffaloes, chickens, rabbits). To help keep our carbon footprint low, we invite all our visitors to plant one tree each. Either a long living fruit tree or a tropical hardwood tree. We provide the seedlings and make sure the tree will prosper. Our place is ideal for: * Families with children * Couples looking to spend quality time together in paradise (hidden away from the rest of the world) * Nature lovers * Adventure lovers * People who favor a healthy life style Possible activities: * Beach & Ocean (swimming, snorkeling, fishing, paddle boating, bonfire / BBQ) * Mountain River (swimming, fish spa, BBQ) * Jungle (hiking on old mountain trails, native hunting trails, bird watching, trip to waterfalls and relaxing in hidden lagoons)
  • The amazing villa was a wonderful place to live for 3 nights. Can not express how pleasant our stay was. The location is beautiful, Theresa's cooking was some of the best food we've ever had and Herwig and the rest of the family were amazing hosts. Extremely grateful to have stayed and met everyone involved.

  • Awesome stay

    Jezreel2019-07-11T00:00:00Z
  • The Amazing Villa truly lives up to its name in every way. Tucked away in over 100 hectares of untouched jungle this place was a dream come true. We booked the nicest room available and it was absolutely stunning. Huge king size bed, private kitchen and dining room and a view of the ocean. Every detail of the room was meticulously hand crafted and made us so comfortable we never wanted to leave!! This is a one of a kind retreat where you can really get away from it all. The animals roam freely through their organic farms and their prestine private beach. If you love animals and love nature, you will love the Amazing Villa. We had 3 day old goats hanging out with us on the beach, chickens with their chicks walking through the outdoor kitchen and kittens and dogs following us everywhere. I was in heaven! Herwig is an excellent host who is easily available to answer all questions. We felt extremly grateful that he and his family have opened their doors to share their beautiful property with others.

  • Great hosts great private beach relaxing week vacation

    Michel2019-01-03T00:00:00Z

  • This is really an AMAZING villa! The sustainable place, the gorgeous view, the hospitality, the delicious organic food, the private beach, the beauty of nature, everything was wonderful! Perfect for disconnecting from the outside world and enjoy a relaxed time. Thank you Herwig for being so helpful and kind to us. We definitely wanna be back :)

  • What a serene slice of paradise. Herwig and Amos were splendid hosts. Herwig is a well versed guide, providing information about the community’s as we drove to the Villa. He was so accommodating and made great company. Amos took care of our lunch and dinner and it’s was some of the most memorable meals I will ever have. Our room was spotless and beautifuly designed. The property itself is well taken cared of and full of adventure. Do yourself a favor and take the side trip to the river property. It’s breathtaking! We will absolutely be back again next year and can not wait! Thank you Herwig!

The Amazing Villa is a beautiful summer house, set in spectacular natural surroundings. It's a place to chill out, to recharge and to get inspired, far away from mainstream tourism. A place you can call home.
The Ylang Ylang Suite is our most impressive room at the Amazing Villa. It occupies an entire building (stand alone) and forms part of a beautiful summer house, set in spectacular natural surroundings. We also keep French chickens (free range) for eggs and meat. Freshly caught fish can be had daily from a nearby fisherman's village. We hope our 2 Labradors and 2 cats will make you feel at home the moment you arrive. Her cooking has been featured in two national newspapers as well as on local TV. She offers an amazing meal plan (advance reservation required) which is usually the highlight of a stay at the Villa. Her unique flavors continue to impress the most discerning palates from around the globe. The Ylang-Ylang suite is exceptionally spacious. It has a very large bedroom with king sized bed made of the finest ebony wood, a large terrace on both sides of the bedroom with spectacular views of the South China Sea (sunsets !) and the rain forest, a beautiful bathroom with bathtub designed for two and a private dining room (table seats six) with kitchen on the ground floor. The Ylang Ylang suite is built using the finest tropical hardwoods (flooring, walls, furniture) and has floor to ceiling windows (screened) for unrestricted views and enjoyment of the ocean air. We produce our own veggies and meat, make our own virgin coconut oil, natural bug repellents, yoghurt and chocolate.
  • The views are amazing! The beach is to die for! If you’re looking for a true Philippino getaway in a pristine jungle and a spectacular clean beach, this is it! This is not for the faint of heart traveler. It is off the beaten path and not for those looking for a cheesy tourist experience. You truly get to create your experience as you go here and make your own adventure! The amenities are great, clean and comfortable. The amazing villa is worth the trek!

  • If you look for a quite retreat in luxury villa with stunning private beach - this is the perfect place to be. Saw stars from my room, heard ocean waves when sleeping (much better then Alexa sounds ), clear water for snorkeling and friendly villa staff.

  • The hosts Herwig and Theresa make this Airbnb an outstanding experience. Their hospitality is beyond compare. Theresa’s passion about life, food, is contagious. Herwig is always there to make your stay comfortable. Expect elevated cuisine without pretenses if you opt for their meal plan. Portions are very generous. Cocktails, Beer and wine are available at very reasonable prices. Much lower than any hotel or restaurant establishment. You won’t feel being taken advantage of. Activities available include hiking or just hanging out at the pristine private beach owned by the hosts. I am sure there are more activities available. We just didn’t have enough time to avail of all of them. We chose the hiking (moderate difficulty) through the palawan rainforest and the reward after the hike is swimming in several cool, clean spring water small lagoon or pool. Perfect relief after the hike and heat. We took the hike with another couple from Australia and they were equally happy with the hike and most of all the lunch picnic prepared by Theresa by the river awaiting us. There were several pools in the crystal clear flowing river that we swam in before the lunch and after. Sumptuous fish, shrimp, chicken and vegetable dishes accompanied by cold San Miguel beer were available which made the experience really outstanding. The Ylang Ylang suite was spacious and had great views with a large en-suite bathroom with bathtub. But if you are an air conditioning slave, you might want to reconsider. We didn’t have a problem because the night can get chilly and there is a room fan available. I thought this was going to be an issue for me but I quickly forgot it because of the spectacular experience we’ve had. We will definitely be back with other family members.

  • Herwig and Mam Theresa’s villa is beyond compare. I write this review knowing that I’ve not slept so deeply or been immersed in such beautiful nature in a very long time. You’ll reconnect with the rise and fall of the sun, and see wildlife, both beautiful and pesky! Be sure to heed Herwig’s guidance seriously on sandflies and Mosquitos. Repellant, sunscreen, and his miracle anti sandfly oil are a must! The days are hot, the sweat is satisfying and the cool breeze as you drift into sleep will make Palawan a place you will never forget. Herwig said goodbye with a genuine handshake and Mam Theresa provided a way more than generous bag of homemade cocoa for the journey back home. Thank you so much to all, especially Lito and Oscar for their warmth and unparalleled kindness.

  • It was a third time I stayed at this Villa! In love everything about it, there aren’t many places like that of which I am aware of. What could be better than to be isolated in such a beautiful place!

  • The Amazing Villa truly is amazing, the photos of the view and room doesn't make it justice. The privacy, even with other guests there, felt rare. The private beach really is private, we didn't see any other people there across our stay. The home cooked food is fantastic, the staff is really friendly and helpful, and Herwig's dogs and cats are very social. Great for animal lovers! Herwig is a great host, helpful in making sure we had a comfortable stay, and happy to explain about local life and nature. If you stay here he will send you a "survival guide", do actually read it (we did the mistake of not reading it). PS read it again once you are there.

  • We have just spent a week in the Ylang Ylang Suite. This is a truly ‘away from it all’ location. We had the place to ourselves, with just Amos, the housekeeper/chef/gardener, Herwig (when he was able) and an assortment of dogs, cats and chickens. The grounds are thoughtfully planted and well-maintained, with an organic vegetable garden to the back. The views from the bar and the terraces are stunning, with glorious sunsets out to sea. Herwig is almost certainly Palawan’s finest mixologist and his cocktails are the stuff of legend. Amos is a fine cook and offers a tasty menu which varies from day to day. Portion sizes are hearty, and he makes every effort to accommodate likes, dislikes and dietary requirements. The setting is superb with a lovely sandy isolated beach a short (if a bit steep) walk downhill. Another reviewer has described it as a ‘trek’ - we’re pushing 60, arthritic and pretty unfit but we managed it both ways without too much huffing and puffing. Our room was very spacious and the bed was a good size (2m+ in length) and comfortable. No aircon but we slept with all windows open (there are fly screens and the bed has a mosquito net) and an electric fan. The generator runs from 6pm to 6 am. The bathroom was well stocked with toiletries. Solar-heated water comes from the spring. There’s plenty of water although if you want it hot (which we didn’t as it was hot outside) you have to wait a while for it to arrive from the tank up the hill and the pressure is a bit low. Herwig and Amos are delightful company and we’ve had some excellent and wide-ranging conversations. To our amazement, we’ve coped for a whole week without cellphone signal or internet. The only downside is that the biting bugs are vicious. We weren’t troubled at all by sandflies on the beach but every other biting thing in the Northern Hemisphere descended on us in the mornings and evenings. Make sure you apply insect repellent diligently and dress accordingly. Herwig is generous with his homemade natural repellent and citronella candles but we are particularly tasty and for us I think DEET might have been better. Remember, also, that the Amazing Villa is surrounded by jungle. You may therefore catch sight of geckos, spiders, cockroaches, wasps, bees and (if you’re lucky) Norbert, the bar frog. In summary, the Amazing Villa really is amazing. Herwig is a very generous and accommodating host, with an excellent sense of humour. He has other business interests so can’t always be there, but then you’re well looked after by Amos. We highly recommend this place.

  • We spent 4 nights at The Amazing Villa and we couldn’t of asked for a more perfect way to end our holiday. Herwig and his staff were more than accommodating and made us feel very at home. We were collected by Herwig in Peurto and he even waited for us to do a shop in the supermarket for a few items we knew we would need as we were traveling with our 3 year old son. We then arrived at the villa at night and welcomed with a homemade cocktail! Waking up the next morning with the view of the ocean from the Ylang Ylang room was too good to be true, accompanied with smells of the rose garden and home cooked and home grown food for breakfast prepared by Amos and Toto was just amazing ! Our days were spent lounging and relaxing around the Villa and on the long stretched private beach. My husband used the surfboard on the perfect little swell, which was an added bonus. Herwig also supplied snorkels, although it was a bit choppy that week, but he did give us a treasure map for coral reefs that I’m sure is beautiful on a calmer day. Herwig also took us to their river only a short drive away, with crystal clear waters where they can also cook you a bbq if you request. It’s a truly magical spot. We opted for 2 meals a day, and the food was spectacular we are vegetarian, my husband is vegan and we were more than happy with every meal. We made our own lunch and snacks for our son in their outdoor tropical garden, which had everything we needed. We enjoyed cocktails, wine and beer from the bar with an extensive menu designed by Herwig! And the prices are very reasonable. There are sandflies on the beach, they seemed to be there one day and then not the next. My husband and son were luckily not bitten but they seemed to love me a lot. But Herwig did advise us about this and had homemade repellent and vinegar on hand. Luckily this didn’t effect my experience and we still would definitely return to this little slice of paradise. Thank you Herwig, Amos and Toto it was a time we will never forget. The only regret is we forgot to plant a tree before we left.
