Your guide to Alicante

All About Alicante

Situated on the spectacular Costa Blanca coastline, the city of Alicante has a history stretching back more than 3,000 years. Once home to both the Greek and Roman civilizations, Alicante later flourished as a trading port and became a major maritime hub in the 17th and 18th centuries. Alicante’s historical landmarks, such as the magnificent Santa Barbara Castle, are a popular destination today — although the city’s main attraction is its white sandy beach, located just a short walk away from the central shopping area. Other leisurely activities include taking a romantic stroll along the marina at sunset, or taking a ride on the Alicante tram to explore nearby towns and villages. Golf enthusiasts enjoy playing courses located just 15-minutes from the city centre.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Alicante

Alicante’s mild Mediterranean climate means there’s never a bad time to visit this coastal city. However, if you’re not a fan of the heat then it’s probably best to avoid July and August, when temperatures rarely fall below 30 degrees Celsius and sticky nights are a regular occurrence. October is ideal for those looking for a balmy beach break without having to dodge the midday sun. Not only will you be able to comfortably explore the city, but the evenings are refreshingly cool. Travel here any time between May and October you’re pretty much guaranteed sunshine.

Top things to do in Alicante

Guadalest Valley

Just a short car or bus ride from the city you’ll find the Guadalest Valley. This small village, which is surrounded by walls and fortress, offers spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and reservoir. The castle, which dominates the skyline, is open to visitors all year round, as are its multiple museums. It’s well worth setting aside a day to explore this beautiful area.

Mercat Central d'Alacant

A trip to the city’s main market is an absolute must. Here, you’ll be blown away by the vast array of fresh, gourmet produce available for purchase. Home to more than 300 stalls, the market plays a huge part of daily life here. This is the perfect spot to have an aperitivo and sample local produce while in town.

Barrio Santa Cruz

The beautiful neighborhood of Barrio Santa Cruz is famed for its vibrant culinary scene, and its winding streets are lined with traditional tapas bars. Barrio Santa Cruz is also home to Santa Bàrbara castle, which has structures dating from the 14th, 16th, and 18th centuries. One of the largest Medieval fortresses in Spain, the castle is perched on Mount Benacantil, and is worth a visit on your way to having a tasty traditional meal in this area.
