A beautifully restored 3 bedroom house in centre of Alcoutim, a delightful village by a river. Ideal for a couple or large families to enjoy the countryside and a river scene but who want to experience village life. Sleeps 2-8. Faro Airport 1hr 15min

The large kitchen and dining area easily seats 8 people, with similar possibilities outside. Alcoutim is a charming village situated on the banks of the River Guadiana, the border between Spain and Portugal. It is the centre for the surrounding area has many amenities incl. cafes, bars and restaurants as well as mini-market, bank, library, chemist, Post Office and a Tourist Office. Across the river is the typical Andalusian village of Sanlucar De Guadiana where one can experience Spanish life and of course a Tapas! A regular ferry service runs during the day. The river and countryside on both sides provide a wonderful landscape for outdoor activities such as walking, mountain biking, kayaking, birdwatching and fishing. Local bike and kayak hire is available as well as boat trips up the river. for the more adventurous there is a 800m Zip Wire across the river! During the summer the River Beach in Alcoutim is a pleasant place to bathe and enjoy the sun or go to the shaded gardens for a picnic. For a day out, you can visit the lovely town of Tavira, or Ayamonte in Spain and their beaches nearby. Or head north into the Alentejo region and the stunning town of Mertola.
  • Polly and Christian made is feel very welcome. They really cared about our well being. Their house is fantastic, great shower, towels, utensils, just everything you need for a comfortable stay. We loved the wood stove as it was quite cold during our stay in March. There was plenty of fire wood so we had it nice and warm and felt comfortable in the evenings. The location is perfect, right in the centre of this quiet little town. The roof terrace is very special offering wonderful views. We highly recommend this home to everyone looking for a comfortable individual place to stay, close to unspoilt landscape and far from the crowds.

  • The owner Pollyanna was very welcoming and was very helpful with the local area, although to be honest we didn’t venture very far as were only staying for a few days. She did admit we were her first Air BnB visitors. The house is very spacious and much bigger than just the two of us needed. It would be ideal for a party of 6 as the large kitchen and 2 terraces are ideal for cooking and dining at. The morning sun coming in to the kitchen and courtyard were so beautiful but for us we found it hard to draw ourselves away from the roof terrace where we sat with our evening drinks (amazingly good value local sparkling to be recommended!) and looked across the village and down the river. A beautifully renovated house in a lovely genuine village.

  • We (family with 2 kids) stayed in Polly's house in Alcoutim for 4 nights. This place felt like home! The spacious country kitchen was well equipped and we enjoyed spending the foggy mornings there with the fire going in the wood stove. Easy to do several walks in nature directly from the house. Even though it was a little challenging for the gps to find the right street, the car was conveniently parked right next to the house once we found the right street. Two nice bathrooms. A third bedroom one floor up with a walkout patio. The views from the two patios are very enjoyable, overlooking the river and the village. The sound of the church bells was enjoyable in this quiet little town. Very good towels and linen! Convenient to have a large washing machine right off the kitchen, and space inside and outside to dry the clothes. The floorplan is well thought out and provides good natural light. The lamps are also very good, placed exactly where you need them. This place is bright, warm and welcoming and we would highly recommend it!

  • Just returned from a lovely relaxing week in Polly and Christian's house. Views and house are amazing, better than the photos! House is centrally placed, and an easy walk to the bars and restaurants in town. Ferry to Sanlucar is €1 each. We went on the Zip wire which was amazing! Also had a boat ride up the river. I'd recommend this house to anyone looking for a relaxing break.

  • We had a very relaxing holiday at Polly and Christian's villa in Alcoutim. They are welcoming, extremely friendly and generous hosts who gave attention to small details and continuously made sure we were ok (including making a doctor's appointment for my husband when he fell ill). The villa has been beautifully restored and was a key reason for us having such a good time. Our children are still small and the river beach was perfect for our purposes - clean, close and with a restaurant on the beach! There is a small grocer in the village who has all the essentials, but you will have to travel a bit further (30 minutes) if you require something more specialized or on a Saturday afternoon and Sunday. There are a number of coffee shops, bars and restaurants within walking distance from the villa. We plan on becoming regular guests!

  • Wonderful place, lovely house, very kind and thoughtful hosts! Thx, Polly and Christian!

  • A superb house with sensational views right in the centre of Alcoutim. There are bars, restaurants and a river beach all within walking distance and the coast is only a short drive away. The house itself is well equipped and was big enough to accommodate all 8 of us comfortably. Although it was hot, this was not a problem as there were ceiling fans in all the bedrooms and the kitchen. We used the ground floor terrace every night for dinning and relaxing in the evenings, whilst the top floor terrace, which leads out of the master bedroom is a great place to escape to with it's breath taking views of the river Guadiana. Pollyanna is a wonderful host who made us feel very welcome from the moment we met her. Everything about this property, it's location and it's host surpassed our expectations and I am certain that we will be returning for another family holiday again in the future.

  • Wonderful house in the centre of Alcoutim with free parking right in front. A nice cool terrace with a bbq available. The house is well-decorated and well-stocked with the things you need when living somewhere (dishwashing liquid, washing powder, toilet paper etc). A slight drawback is the lack of AC (we arrived during a heat wave), but the night time air cools down the house quite well. The hosts were very helpful and welcoming. We would go again..!

Our accomodation is a recent, cozy and clean place. "Amores perfeitos" room overlooks the castle, Guadiana river and Sanlucar del Guadiana (Spain). It has private bathroom inside the room, AC and TV. Alcoutim is located in the right margin of the Guadiana river and it is one of the most beautiful and still preserved areas of Algarve. It has a great river beach. There are also boat trips avaliable. You can also enjoy a decline in Tyrolean between Alcoutim and Sanlucar del Guadiana (Spain).
  • Incredible spot, amazing host, go there

  • The room was very tidy and Rosária was very helpful in everything. The only things that lacked were the kitchen (i.e. one could’t prepare food or eat it because there were no kitchen utensils). Ok, there was a fridge. Another shortcoming was the lack of wifi. Otherwise, I can warmly recommend Rosária’s aibnb. Additionally, I can say that Alcoutim is a fantastic place to visit!

    Matti2017-10-28T00:00:00Z
  • Rosaria was a very accommodating hostess and the historic house was full of charm and comfort. We were able to park our bicycles and walk around the town. Finding her place was easy. ..just look for the house covered in bright pink bougainvillea. Thanks Rosaria

    Gail2016-09-26T00:00:00Z
  • The room I stayed in at Rosaria's place was perfect for my stay in Alcoutim. I would be very happy to recommend it. Be aware, though only a short distance from the centre of the village, if you struggle with mobility it is quite a steep climb up the hill to the rooms. Thank you Rosaria

    Andrew2017-10-23T00:00:00Z

  • Unfortunately I was unable to stay at Simon's as we had a last minute medical problem. However all communication with him was rapid and very helpful and I am sure it would have been a lovely place to stay and we would have liked to have met them both very much.

An historic sailing barge on the beautiful Rio Guadiana. Discover the beauty of the “Algarve Natural”, it’s walks, it’s fauna and flora, it’s history and culture – and taste it’s wonderful cuisine. Comfortable accommodation for five guests.
De Gebroeders, Dutch for The Brothers, is a Friesian Skûtsje, a small form of Tjalk, built in Heeg, Friesland in 1912 - the same year as The Titanic. The boat is built from rivetted iron, is 17.12 metres long by 3.70 metres beam. It's mast is around 17 metres high, but is counterweighted to allow it to pass easily under bridges. The vessel weighs 25 tons, has a flat bottom with a draft of 90 cm. It was built as a commercial cargo sailing barge and carried 32 tons, mainly of sand and gravel. At that time there was no engine, so when there was no wind the family donned harnesses and towed the boat. Today life's a bit easier as it has a 100 hp diesel engine, fitted when it’s yacht conversion was done in 1972. It also has an electric flush toilet, tiled shower, washing machine and tumble dryer, espresso machine, combi microwave-oven-grill, two fridges, a gas hob, CD/MP3 and even a vacuum cleaner. Don’t imagine for a moment that a stay aboard will be a five star luxury experience. It's not: it's a hundred year old classic sailing boat, and it's foibles and limitations are a part of it’s charm. And it’s probably the oldest vessel afloat on the Rio Guadiana. I’ll leave you to count the stars after your holiday, but staying on a classic boat on a beautiful river with a fantastic climate in good company usually creates a good ambience. The vessel is moored at Laranjeiras, about 9km south of Alcoutim. When there are visitors I aim to moor the boat on the visitor pontoon. With an unlimited water and electricity supply life becomes much easier with visitors unused to the sailor’s art of economy of water and electric consumption. The saloon of the vessel has a dining table where six peolple can eat in comfort. This area can convert to a double bed if needed. With this facility the vessel could accomodate 6-8 visitors. The practical problem to consider for the visitors, however, is that those that sleep in the saloon are always the last to go bed and the second to wake up in the morning! In the saloon there’s even a wood burning stove for the chillier evenings in January and February.
The Rio Guadiana is one of the biggest rivers in the Iberian peninsula, which for its last 60km forms the border between the Portuguese Algarve and Spanish Andalucia. Used for cargo transport since Phoenecian times, the river is now the preserve of pleasure boats, traditional river fishermen and the occassional tourist boat. The river winds it's way through beautiful undeveloped countryside – the “Algarve Natural” – a nature lover's paradise, whose colours and character change with the seasons. The river is teaming with fish including mullet, carp, lamprey, eels and shrimps. For the ornithologist there's a rich diversity of birdlife including Golden Orioles, Egrets, Azure Winged Magpies, Kingfishers, Partridges, Buzzards and Eagles. There is inevitably a great variety of species between the salt lagoons of Castro Marim downstream near the sea, and the upstream species inland in the Alentejo approaching Mértola. The river valley is a Special Area of Conservation in the EU’s Natura 2000 project. In quiet moorings in the countryside, especially in the little tributaries, it's often possible to see turtles and otters. At night there is often the sound of wild boar and deer coming to drink or even swimming across. And the locals also have a long history of swimming across, as many were smugglers during the epoch of fascist governments both sides of the border. But since the revolution in 1974, the EU and Shengen, things are cool on the river. There are numerous well signposted walking routes in the area. At night with very little “light polution”, as Alcoutim is the least densely populated area in Portugal, the display of stars is often breathtaking. The villages and towns along the river are rich in the cultural history of the region, with cafés and restaurants serving a traditional range of local dishes. Between Foz de Odeleite and Alcoutim there is a small road that follows the river, but north of Alcoutim the only way to see the river is afloat, as it was for centuries as ferries travelled from Mértola to the sea. Whether it’s for a night-stop on a touring holiday, or for a few days break where you can discover a hidden side of of the Rio Guadiana, you’ll find the experience a pleasure with a warm welcome.
  • This was a high light in our holiday. The Captain was always in a good mood and gave us a lot of helpful information. We can highly recommend this unique accommodation.

  • We spent the last night of our time in Portugal on Dick's boat on the River Guadiana and I'm so pleased we did. It was unlike any of the other places we had stayed and visited not only because we were staying on a boat but because of the beautiful views, the completely silent and tranquil river, and the charming small village of Laranjeiras, with a restaurant that served the best pork I have ever tasted. Dick's boat was exactly as the pictures show. Fairly basic but with all the amenities you need including shower, washing machine, kitchen appliances etc. we slept fine, and you get used to the low ceilings pretty quickly! It was pretty idyllic sitting on the deck drinking wine watching the sun go down and chatting to Dick about his boat and about his time in Portugal. He was very warm and welcoming and his passion about the village and the locals was infectious. I would definitely recommend staying here and would love to visit again :)

  • Just get out of your bus or your car, go down the gateway to enter another world : a splendid 17 meters dutch barge, of which the queen is a wooden mermaid and king an amazing English. You go on board, settle in your cabin, and no longer want to leave, ever. Or to go a head and watch the birds that pass by skimming the surface, or just to join the Cantinha on the platform, where we shared a beer with a Scottish philosopher and a French globetrotter. On this Rio Guadiana which is one of the last wild rivers of the continent, Dick’s barge is better than an address, a refuge. And probably the most exotic and friendly Bed and Breakfast in western Europe… À bientôt.

  • We had a wonderful welcome when we arrived. Our son of 12 said it as like staying in a museum. Dick was friendly and helpfull. Great breakfast and a beautiful place to stay. If you like staying on a boat, it is a beautiful and authentic place to stay. Ed (husband of Lilian) and son

  • What an amazing place to stay. Quiet peaceful sleeps. Dick is an exceptional host. As soon as we arrived we were invited to join Dick and his friends at the cafe for a Drink. Lots of laughs. The restaurant in the village is great serving traditional food. Not to far away are villages for exploring. And ancient castles. Would highly recommend

    Megan2016-10-10T00:00:00Z
  • We all loved our stay on Dick's boat. It took a few hours getting used to the limited space that is part of living on a boat, organisation was key. However, sitting on deck looking out over the beautiful river at sunset, with luscious mountains rising up on both sides, was magical. Star gazing at night, occasionally interrupted by the sound of fish jumping out of water, was an experience we will never forget. There's a friendly cafe just a minute's walk from the boat, where you can mingle with the locals till late at night. The village where the boat is stationed, is small and charming and has a good restaurant. Dick is a great host, friendly and very helpful. Breakfast was laid out every morning. Dick has a vast knowledge of the history of the boat and of the local area, which makes for interesting conversation. 5 stars

    Betina2017-08-22T00:00:00Z
  • We enjoyed staying with Dick and hearing the unique story of his yacht that once served as a cargo barge along the Dutch canals. Dick is friendly and keeps the boat clean and freshly painted. The peaceful village of Laranjeiras has a family-run restaurant and an occasional concert of Portuguese folk music that brings the local over-70s to their feet! The surrounding area offers quiet paths for hiking and a starry sky at night. An original option for visitors seeking to escape the commercial mass tourism of the coast.

    Kalin2017-07-24T00:00:00Z

The "House of the Priests" comes from the rehabiltacion of a house situated on the main quartered of the mining village of Puerto de la Laja banks of the Guadiana river, declared of Cultural Interest by the Government of Andalusia in the category of Historical Site. It is so named because two priests Huelva, after hanging habits were delivered there, a dissolute life. Registered in the Tourist Board of Huelva with the No. AR / HU / 329 of 09/12/2014.
  • Lovely house and just as described. If you want to relax and get away from it all this is the place, but without a car you'll be screwed. My only complaint is that there is no WiFi, which for many is as important as water, and with no mobile phone coverage, absolutely necessary in my opinion. I'm also an AirBnB infitrión and was therefore unable to respond to booking requests etc whilst being away. Other than that, I loved this place.

  • Rosario was a real sweetheart and her husband picked us up when we arrived. They were very kind when I had to cancel my last night because I realised I couldn't get back to Faro in time for my return flight. Alcoutim is best visited by car.

  • It was really great staying with Rosária and her family. They were wonderful and kind hosts and even organized some food for us in the Riverside Tavern after closing time of the kitchen and after we arrived pretty late and a little hungry. The view from the room, especially at night was fantastic! Very recommend.

The "House of Olives Trees" is on the edge of the mining village of Puerto de la Laja banks of the Guadiana river, declared of Cultural Interest by the Government of Andalusia in the category of Historical Site. Next to the house in the garden of olives and almonds recovered, it stands a terrace with wooden floors. Registered in the Tourist Board of Huelva with the No. AR / HU / 331 of 09/12/2014.
  • I spent 2 nights with my family in this wonderful and quite place. We were well received by Manoli who gave us some nice tips. The house has a awesome view over the Guadiana river and the fireplace made our evenings even better. El Granado, the little town nearby has a wonderful restaurant by the church which was a very pleasant surprise. This place is perfect for family and friends who are looking get away from the fast city life. Since it's quite isolated, I would recommend future guests to bring some basic food and commodities with them.

  • We liked Alcoutim and the surrounding area. Alcoutim is a pretty little town. We enjoyed going across the Guardiana to Spain in a ferry (only 1Euro) and wandering around. It was pretty straightforward driving down to the coast for the beaches when we wanted to and we could also explore northwards to Mertola and Castro Verde. Alcoutim has a beach on the river too which was very popular. The locals were all friendly. Remember to think about getting some food, milk etc on the way on the first day. There is only a small shop in Alcoutim.

Our accomodation is a recent, cozy and clean place. "Papoila" room overlooks the castle, Guadiana river and Sanlucar del Guadiana (Spain).

  • Great host, really nice and helpful. Spotless clean room on 1.st floor, with fantastic view of Alcoutim's old town and Sanlúcar on the other side of the river. Quiet location, but there was a couple of nights where cats and dogs were really annoying (helped to close all windows and turn the air condition instead). Close to everything in Alcoutim.

From the Puerto de la Laja out the Greenway Lower Guadiana by the old route of the mining railway station to the old Glen Sardon 17 kilometers. Conversely, along the shore upstream, runs the river trail to Pomarao (Portugal) Twin Puerto de la Laja (Spain) Portuguese village although it is advisable to walk to the old barracks Canaveral Civil Guard three kilometers . The Guadiana river is navigable from antiquity to Mértola, many sailing ships back its waters are sailors who have been around the world and eventually end up saturating in its banks thanks to the numerous jetties berthing there and especially captivated by the beauty the river and its banks. The lower stretch of the river Guadiana, administrative border between Spain and Portugal is one of the best preserved natural estuaries of the Iberian Peninsula. In its waters there is a significant wealth of European fish including sturgeon, Saramugo (jarabugo) and other fish endemism. Flora and fauna are also important highlighting species like the osprey, eagle owl, black stork, heron and otters. Today, on the banks of the Guadiana river high ecological value are river beaches for swimming and beach bars, where in summer evenings can listen to musicians playing river while enjoying its rich cuisine. In the Baixo / Lower Guadiana basically four cuisines converge: the seafood cuisines of Huelva coast and the Algarve with the Andévalo and Alentejana based dishes from hunting, extensive cattle of the region, their home gardens. Also noteworthy collection Turmas (white truffle) and gurumelos (Amanita ponderosa) in Andevalo and Portuguese Raya which provide a wealth of gastronomy.

Volveremos.
