American Restaurant
“Care for a side of socialism with that? Friendly service, leftist leanings and great food and drinks, where the activists gather to eat, subvert the system and plan the revolution. Monday Nights - Open Mic, Tuesday is Comedy Night! Several unique locations throughout DC area, but this one is five minutes away. Owned by rabid social entrepreneur and someday mayor of Washington, DC, Andy Shalal, who says Busboys is "a community where racial and cultural connections are consciously uplifted . . . a place to take a deliberate pause and feed your mind, body and soul… a space for art, culture and politics to intentionally collide . . . we believe that by creating such a space we can inspire social change and begin to transform our community and the world."”

Bakery
“(5 minutes away) Best Buns (Motto: "Get your buns in here.") will strike your fancy if you love French style baking: chewy crusts with airy, layered innards. The official bakery for all of the Great American Restaurants group, they bake everything in house, 7 days a week, open at 6am weekdays/7am weekends for coffee (Starbucks), made to order breakfast sandwiches (on their fresh baked croissants or icebox bread - yes, I'm about to drool), breads, pastries, cookies, AND Angus beef burgers (noon - 5pm weekdays). You can leisurely consume your breakfast in the attached Carlyle Cafe (restaurant). As with all Great American Restaurants operations, their staff are immaculately trained professionals. A real joy to visit and taste!”

Gourmet Shop
“This is a hybrid market/restaurant from Chef Cathal Armstrong, the pride and joy of Alexandria and one of the best chef’s in the region. This is a good coffee and pastry choice for breakfast, but also superb for a sandwich lunch and casual dinner. I wouldn’t expect whole cuts of steak or fish fillets, but instead dishes like Beef Bourguignon and Seafood Stew. The wine list is excellent due to Todd Thrasher, a local celebrity mixologist, being in charge of the beverage program.”
