Places to stay in Ardfern
A light and very spacious loft room overlooking the picturesque Crinan Canal. The large top floor has amazing views and a wood burning stove. It is mainly self-contained with a sleeping area, living area and basic cooking facilities. There are two bathrooms in the house which are shared with me and my son. I provide a kettle, toaster, microwave, small fridge and a variety of basic foods, so you can be independent but you are welcome to use my large kitchen for more cooking. A warm welcome awaits
The loft room spans the entire top floor of the house, with 6 velux windows to let the light in all day. The sleeping area has a double bed, a small wooden closet, a bedside table with drawers. There is also a day bed that pulls out to another double bed. The living/relaxing area has a 5 seater sofa, wood burning stove, full internet TV and a slection of DVD's and books. I have provided camping style kitchen facilities, with a kettle, toaster, combination microwave, small fridge, crockery and cutlery. It will be stocked with foodstuffs for a continental style breakfast. You can use the facilities to cook your own meals but if you prefer to make something more you are more than welcome to use the big kitchen in the house. Alternatively, there are lots of great places to eat out. For bathrooms there is a bathroom with a shower on the floor below the loft and two floors below is a bathroom with a bath. Both of these you will have full access to.
The Crinan Canal is described as the 'most beautiful shortcut in Britain' and Braeface is situated right next to it at Bellanoch Basin. It is a Grade 2 listed stone building, believed to have been built in the early 19th century to house the engineers involved in the construction of the canal which began in 1801. Bellanoch Basin is a small hamlet with about 10 houses, it is nice and quiet with one road that leads to the village of Crinan, 2 miles away, that provides the western entrance to the Crinan Canal from the Atlantic. Crinan has a lovely hotel with a bar, seafood bar and restuarant for lunches and dinner. The Crinan Coffee shop is a gorgeous place to sit during the day and watch the boats entering and leaving the canal.
  • Great place to stay, Katie was warm and welcoming. We could have easily stayed longer. Highly recommended. Thanks again

  • What can I say? We agreed with all the previous reviews! The living space is cosy and spacious with many interesting touches. The scenery is truly stunning, especially if blessed with fine weather. Katie is very friendly and welcoming. And the company of the cat by the wood burning stove was an unexpected bonus! If you like nature there are many trails and scenic spots to discover nearby. I believe we only scratched the surface, located as we were in one of the forty National Scenic Areas of Scotland. It was everything we could have hoped for, for a quiet two-night getaway over the new year. Thanks, Katie, for a wonderful stay!

  • A really excellent stay in a beautiful house in a beautiful place. Katie directed us to a delicious Seafood Bar at Crinan Hotel 2 miles away, and we then spent the rest of the evening back at the house, sitting by our own wood burner, reading interesting books we found in the room. Very generous breakfast in the morning, with so many thoughtful touches including a microwave egg poacher, with instructions! 100% recommended.

  • What a great place and great host. Lovely views and lovely set up and touches

  • We really enjoyed our stay and it was great to have a fire. The loft space very nice and cosy in a beautiful area. We would recommend it.

  • A spacious and spotlessly clean room, with amazing views out over the water. In the room is also a supply of very well though out provisions so that you can eat a tasty breakfast before starting your day.

  • It was an honor and a pleasure to have been able to stay at Katie’s lovely home. The house and accommodations are exactly as they appear in the pictures and a little bit nicer. Katie was very nice, welcoming, her breakfast setup was very much appreciated and the views from her place into the sea are something amazing to wake up to. The place is very clean, Katie is a great communicator and above all very friendly. I would recommend her place to whomever is considering booking it.

  • Katie's place was a charming wee gem. Fabulous location, matched by the facilities. For those seeking a restful and relaxing experience, this ticks all the boxes. Great location within easy reach of lovely towns like Tarbert and Campbeltown. The view outside the house is fantastic. Thanks Katie, you were a lovely host and hopefully we will return another day.

  • This is a beautiful setting and Charlie is an amazing host. He definitely goes above and beyond!

  • Great place and great communication

  • The coach house is a beautiful location, close to Oban. We received a warm welcome from Cathy, the housekeeper, as Charlie was away for the first evening and day. Cathy cooked us Scottish specialties that were prepared with love. It was great talking to her, and we’ll always have a friend in this beautiful country. At Charlie’s suggestion, we took advantage of the woods behind the coach house, and climbed up the hill to see an amazing view. The main house (where we enjoyed breakfast) is a super cozy west highland house, heated by wood stove. Our loft was totally separate, very clean, and had a nice little kitchen. The heater was warm on the cool, damp nights. We would stay at the couch house again any time!

  • Charlie was a caring and responsive host. He ensured we were comfortable and was always there when we needed him. We enjoyed the clean and well-kept apartment, and the beautiful grounds around.

  • Elaine and Charlie were responsive and gracious hosts though we never interacted with Elaine in person. The location of the property across from a scenic loch is idyllic though we did not have time to explore this. The unit has ample space in both the kitchen and sleeping area. Because it’s a top floor unit, it can get warm when the weather is warm. Out of concern for midge infiltration, we did not open the windows at night so it did get stuffy as well but were glad for the fan provided. Worth knowing is that the unit has a bath but no shower which can be good or bad depending on your bathing preferences. The cleanliness of the unit was adequate but additional touches like complementary Scottish teacakes and bottled water helped to round out the experience. Charlie also provided a hearty Scottish breakfast for a fee, which was very filling!

  • Really lovely scenery, comfy bed, and very warm. Would stay again!

  • We had a great time staying at Elaine and Charlie's place. It was private and Charlie was very helpful providing tips on the local walks. The walk up to the viewpoint behind the house is worth it once you get to the top! Good night's sleep on a comfortable bed and perfectly warm during the night. Great value for somewhere that is like a wee home away from home. Will definitely recommend.

  • One of the best hosts we ever been - super friendly an helpful!!! We can strongly recommend Charlie and Elaine! If you want to see Oban and the surrounding Isles, it's the perfect location to stay.

The views are spectacular and the kitchen is very well equipped. The main bedroom has a super king size double bed which can also be set-up as two singles. A further single bed can be set-up in this larger bedroom so that it sleeps three people in total. The second bedroom has a super king size double bed which can also be set-up as two singles. We provide luxury quality towels and bed linen for use during your stay. We will also supply some seperate beach towels which we don't mind going in the sand and salt water.
Port Appin is very peaceful and surrounded by the sea and mountains. It's at the end of a single track road so doesn't receive so many tourists. There is a small co-op for buying food 500m away and a few restaurants nearby Steeped in the history of the Appin Stewarts and nearby Castle Stalker, Robert Louis Stevenson based his novels Catriona and Kidnapped on the story of the murder of The Red Fox of Glen Ure in the Appin area. Built in 1320 it sits in the loch watching over the local residents. Scenic horse trekking is available locally (March to October) to enjoy the scenery. Take a sea trip out of Oban to view whales, seals and dolphins (in season) or just enjoy a big bag of fresh, locally caught fish and chips in the harbour of Oban or sitting on the beach at Ganavan sands. Fort William with its skiing, mountain biking and hiking are a 45 minute drive from the cottage while Oban is accessed by car in 25 minutes. From here you can take ferries to all the other islands such as Jura or Mull. Highland Games, hiking challenges, motor rally, the world cup stone skimming championships - these are just some of the local events throughout the year.
  • Great little place in a perfect location overlooking the bay. Would stay there again and hope to return soon!

  • Beautifully situated with a very nice view. A slightly more cozy interior would have been appreciated. Good accommodation overall.

  • Amazing location and perfect retreat after a day out exploring the scenery. We had a great stay, were very lucky with the weather and would definitely return!

  • We had a fabulous time the location of the property is excellent and it has a view to die for. It has everything you need would highly recommend it.

  • beautiful accommodation that has met all expectations

  • A wonderful quiet place with a marvelous view out to the bay. Direct access to the beach and provided beach toys, books and games make it an ideal place with kids. Great options to explore the area with walk around the land tip to Port Appin, ferry to the Isle of Lismore and Stalker Castle close by. In the flat we found everything we need and the host was very helpful. Very much recommended!

  • I can only reiterate what other reviewers have said ... lovely accommodation in a wonderful location and very definitely the best Airbnb we have stayed in. Everything you could need is provided, the beds are fabulous, the sitting area is comfortable and we were warm and cosy even when it was a bit grizzly outside. The beach is quiet and the walk round the headland to the Pierhouse is lovely (the food is great when you get there!). Susannah was there to welcome us and show us around ... and to give some local tips. During our week in Port Appin we did several local walks, walked round the Glencoe Lochans and spent a beautifully sunny day on Mull (we took the car on the ferry from Oban to Craignure). We also hired electric bikes from Port Appin Bike Hire and took them on the passenger ferry (from the landing opposite the Pierhouse) to Lismore. Unfortunately, when we got there we discovered that there was a problem with one of the bikes ... we struggled on for a couple of hours but had to give up and get the ferry back to Port Appin rather sooner than we had planned. The bike hire owner was a real gentleman and refunded the hire cost of the bike without a quibble. All in all, a lovely week and we didn’t want to leave!

  • The Bothy is a delightfully presented, clean and comfortable place, perfectly situated. It is quiet and private but also close to all the sights. We enjoyed our stay very much and would come back.
