Get a sense of the long and storied history of this area at the central Ayia Napa Monastery, half of which is built underground. Take a trip out of town and spot stone-built chapels and rugged cliffs on the way to Makronissos Tombs. Perched high above the waves, this archaeological site contains 19 ancient Roman and Hellenistic tombs carved into the rock. Those in search of a laid-back day on the sand will love Nissi Beach, a long stretch of shoreline with blue flag status that’s just outside the town. The coast is a big draw for visitors — and with good reason — from the sea caves at Cape Greko to fresh fish straight out of the ocean, to snorkelling and scuba diving.

The island nation of Cyprus boasts 340 days of sunny weather per year, and sunshine is likewise ever-present in Ayia Napa, so sunscreen is a must regardless of the season. Cyprus sits in the south section of the Mediterranean Sea, meaning peak summer season — between June and September — gets hot. Head here in May and October for outdoor activities without the uncomfortable temperatures. Things start to cool off and quiet down from December, but temperatures rarely drop much. However, bear in mind that Ayia Napa’s water sports spots and some eateries may not stay open once the summer season is over and visitors have less of a presence.

Thalassa Museum

Set in the centre of town, Thalassa Museum is dedicated to the island’s relationship with the sea. The building’s layout provides different perspectives on its three floors of a replica of the Keryneia II, a trading ship that sank off the coast in the 4th century BC. Marine life enthusiasts head down to the basement level for exhibits showcasing corals, shells, and fossils dating back millions of years.

Scuba Diving

Aspiring scuba divers, look no further than the Ayia Napa coast. Calm conditions here make it the perfect stepping stone for beginners, while the more advanced can explore sea life within an underwater chapel and caves, and go on night dives.

Ayia Napa Sculpture Park

The Ayia Napa Sculpture Park is just outside town on the road to Cape Greco. Follow the trail and admire pieces by a host of international artists dotted along the sweeping headland. Take in the panoramic views and fresh sea air, then head next door to the Park of Mediterranean Plants. Here you can see cacti, succulents, and a plethora of dried plant varieties that bring botanical lovers in droves.
