“"If you were in Bitola and you haven't walked through the Main Street, than you have seen nothing." Sirok Sokak (Широк Сокак – Wide Street) is the main and busiest street in Bitola, with numerous shops and bars. Located in the city centre, as local population says, this is the place where you go if you want to see someone in Bitola or to be seen. On Sirok Sokak are located many shops, bars, restaurants, the theatre, city museum, galleries and cafes. Sirok Sokak is the place where you can drink your morning coffee while, enjoying the oldest architectural works and buildings in the Balkans, which decorate the city since the Turkish times. ”

“Ancient town "Heraclea Lyncestis" It was founded by Philip II of Macedon in the middle of the 4th century BC. The city was named in honor of the mythological Macedonian hero Heracles. The name Lynkestis originates from the name of the ancient kingdom, conquered by Philip, where the city was built. In the early Byzantine period (4th to 6th centuries AD) Heraclea was an important episcopal center. The so-called Small Basilica was discovered in excavations made before the outbreak of World War II between 1936 and 1938. ”

“A perfect example of how to reconcile past and present. The Bitola čaršija has been neither abandoned nor did a victim of unregulated building, nor even transform into a shop window for tourists. Nevertheless it risks turning into a mundane modern market. A contribution to our dossier on Ottoman Bazaars in the Balkans”
