Your guide to Bray

All About Bray

Bray is a large village located on the banks of the Thames River in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead about 30 miles west of London. In Bray, which is actually considered a suburb of Maidenhead, the narrow streets are lined with beautiful Tudor-style homes and Old World style pubs and restaurants. On the edge of town, Bray Lake is a popular spot for watersports including canoeing, kayaking, and paddleboarding, and you can also head out onto the Thames as part of a longer boat tour to the nearby town of Windsor.

Maidenhead and Windsor provide a plethora of great attractions including the famous Windsor Castle, the 17th century Guildhall, Windsor's Baroque town hall, and the fascinating Downey Court, a Tudor-style mansion originally built in the 1400s that provides a backdrop for many TV shows and movies.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Bray

Thanks to southern England's moderate year round climate and a slew of indoor attractions, there is no bad time to secure Bray cottages for your next holiday. The summer has beautiful, sunny weather and long days making it great for exploring. This is the busiest time of year so take this into consideration, especially if you are travelling on weekends. The spring and autumn are a little less crowded but are still warm enough to explore all the sites. Although it can get a bit chilly during the winter, you can see Bray and the nearby towns all decorated for the holidays. This is also a lovely time to try out some of the local pubs or browse through some of the shops.

Top things to do in Bray

Downey Court

As one of England’s finest homes, this 15th century Tudor style mansion is famous for its magnificent architecture and furnishings, the wonderful honey that is produced here, and for being the site of England’s first pineapple, which was presented in 1661 to Charles II with great fanfare. It is possible to tour the house, garden, and grounds in this Grade 1 listed building.

The Thames

This famous river passes through Bray, and one of the best ways to experience the town's connection to it is by boat. Full day tours leave from the nearby town of Maidenhead, making their way past millionaire's row before stopping in the historic town of Windsor.

Windsor Castle

The famous Windsor Castle is located just a 15-minute drive from Bray. Founded in the 11th century by the first Norman monarch of England, it is the biggest and oldest castle in the world. It is open for tours, allowing you to get a glimpse into the State Apartments and St. George's Chapel.
