Landmark
“Asakusa is Tokyo's best known shitamachi ("low town") - with an old-time, ramshackle feel, yet as clean and safe as anywhere in Tokyo. This must-see district is where kimono-clad visitors enjoy a retro Tokyo experience, athletic rickshaw drivers hawk rides around the district, and atmospheric stalls and restaurants offer a huge array of traditional foods and souvenirs.”

“Imahan is definitely an upscale place, good for a fancy dinner. Just across the street from Hitsumabushi, it’s located at the corner of Kokusaidori and Kappabashihondori. You are greeted by ladies in perfect make-up and coiffure wearing kimono. If you are seated upstairs, you leave your shoes and are ushered into an elevator with tatami on the floor. Prices start at 8000 Y, but it’s worth the experience.”

“Yanaka (谷中) is one of the few districts in Tokyo where the shitamachi atmosphere, an old town ambience reminiscent of Tokyo from past decades, still survives. Throughout the district, there is an air of nostalgia and a rustic charm. It is within walking distance of Ueno Park, and offers a sightseeing opportunity different from the metropolitan city feel of other parts of Tokyo.”
