“The part and the castle are two great attractions for you. The castle sits on the ancient Roman Temple of Claudius and houses some artefacts of national and international importance. Boudica famously burnt the temple to the ground. The grounds of the castle now sit within Colchester Castle Park, a park with children's playgrounds, walks and horticultural displays, a bandstand and boating lakes.”

“Colchester Castle is the largest Norman Keep in Europe. Constructed on the foundations of the Temple of Claudius, built when Colchester was the first Roman capital of Britain, the Castle Museum today reveals many fascinating layers of history to visitors. Visitors can try out some exciting new experiences - try your hand at building a Norman archway, excavating a Roman doctor's grave or steering a chariot around Colchester's recently uncovered Roman Circus! Be wowed as a large scale 'son et lumière' projection transforms the east wall with light and sound. Opening details Monday to Saturday: 10:00 - 17:00 Sunday: 11:00 - 17:00 Castle Park, Colchester, CO1 1TJ Tel: 01206 282939”

“CASTLE & MUSEUM - built on the foundations of the ancient Roman Temple of Claudius under the order of William the Conqueror in the 11th century, it is a fine example of a largely intact Norman castle. A little further out, the castle is one of many top, ancient, British sights – all conveniently located near one another in Colchester. Like all ancient edifices, it has a rich history. It also has one of the best collections of Roman artefacts in Britain. Highly recommended for a long day out.”
