Your guide to Coverack

All About Coverack

Situated on the eastern coast of Cornwall’s Lizard Peninsula, the small fishing village of Coverack sits on an endearing little harbour. While the waterfront was once a busy hub, there are now only a few fishing boats. Despite the notorious history surrounding the Manacles — the mostly submerged rocks off the shore, site of more than 100 shipwrecks — the area is home to a variety of marine wildlife.

Coverack’s protected bay boasts a sand-and-pebble shoreline and calm waters, which lend themselves to water-related activities including windsurfing, kayaking, snorkelling, and fishing. Numerous local restaurants and cafes provide outdoor seating and magnificent views overlooking the bay while you enjoy some freshly caught seafood, including lobster and crab. The small Coverack cottages and buildings, some with stained-glass windows, only add to the ambience of this tiny coastal village.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Coverack

Mild summers and cold winters are typical of Cornwall’s temperate climate. Late spring to early autumn is generally the best time to seek Coverack accommodations. The weather during this time is warm but pleasant, although mornings can be chilly, so be sure to pack a jacket. This is also a great time to enjoy one of the local events: the Coverack Arts & Music Festival in July features works from local artists along with live musical entertainment. Take in three days of sea songs at the Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival in Falmouth, about 45 minutes’ drive from Coverack. In late autumn, the temperatures drop and rainfall increases, and many of the village’s shops and restaurants close for the winter months.

Top things to do in Coverack

Pendennis Castle

Pendennis Castle in Falmouth was built for Henry VIII as an artillery fort and remains one of England’s best-preserved coastal fortresses. There are displays of historical weapons used to protect the country from attack, with battle reenactments and interactive cannon-loading activities.

Kynance Cove

Kynance Cove, 30 minutes’ drive from Coverack, is considered one of the most beautiful places on the Lizard Peninsula. The sea radiates a beautiful turquoise in the sun; sit on the soft white sand surrounded by steep rocky cliffs, or explore some of the caves at low tide as you wade through the waters.

Lizard Lighthouse Heritage Centre

At the peak of the Lizard Peninsula, the most southerly point of the British mainland, the Lizard Lighthouse Heritage Centre features the only lighthouse in Cornwall you can actually climb up. Learn about the history of lighthouses in the area and the treacherous waters off the coast. You can even build a giant foam lighthouse or learn how to send a message in Morse code.
