  • We loved our stay at the Smithy cottage! It was clean and cosy. Beautiful craftmanship. Julie was very welcoming and helpful with everything and homemade bread was absolutely delicious. Really recommend the Smithy, unique place and experience.

    Hanna2016-09-01T00:00:00Z
  • The Smithy was a real haven, and just as beautiful as it looks in the photographs. We spent a very comfortable and relaxing week here over Christmas, Julie was a fantastic host (the homemade mince pies and mulled cider were delicious!), and we really couldn't have asked for anything more. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend a stay here.

    Sally2015-12-29T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely cottage with Julie who obviously takes pride and is a great host. Certainly recommend it for its location and comfort and will certainly go again.

    Dean2017-02-24T00:00:00Z
  • The Smithy (or the Hobbit house as I called it) is just gorgeous as is the view. Julie gave us a lovely warm welcome with fresh baked bread! The wood burning stove, the beautiful design of the interior and the setting all make for a perfect little stay in the country.

    Jennifer 2016-01-05T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely cottage, host was incredibly friendly and welcoming - even brought us a loaf of fresh bread in the morning. Would recommend

    Daisy2016-12-11T00:00:00Z
  • My partner and I had a brilliant stay at Julie's cottage. It is just as the pictures show - very cosy, clean and comfortable -and perfect for a couple's get away. Julie was also a fantastic host - she helped us out with where to walk around the area and with local amenities; she even gave us homemade bread on arrival which was delicious. We would definitely stay again - thank you very much Julie!

    Alice2016-08-22T00:00:00Z
  • The Smithy has been beautifully renovated with doors made on the premises and a log burner. Julie brought freshly baked bread in the morning and showed us everything we needed to know on our arrival including underfloor heating. Very friendly and welcoming.

    Collette2016-11-04T00:00:00Z
  • My first airbnb experience and what a host to have!! Julie made us very welcome and we felt right at home from the start. The home baked bread was delicious and most appreciated as were the cakes and the bonfire toffee went down a treat. Cannot recommend this location enough, a very cosy and comfortable cottage in a great location. Great walking on the doorstep and only a quick stroll into glossop, which we enjoyed too. Thanks again Julie. Ian and Callula

  • Very homely

    Kester2017-04-04T00:00:00Z
  • The house was easy to find and perfect for our needs as a group of five. Our hostess was very quick to communicate and it was most welcoming to arrive with the house warmed up and the fire on.

    Rebecca2017-03-12T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely little cottage in a small village with everything you need. Big supermarket (Tesco) and train station are in walking distance. Cottage is very clean. Wifi works fine.

    Anne2017-09-08T00:00:00Z
  • There were amazing views from the cottage and a lovely outside space. We travelled by public transport and it was easy to find from the station and you can also catch a bus from Manchester which passes the cottage. We only stayed for one night and didn't get a chance to explore the area, but it would be a good spot to use as a base.

    Gayle2016-06-21T00:00:00Z
  • We travelled with family from Hungary to Scotland with a short stay in Manchester. Jeanne was a very responsive and hospitable host. We got all the necessary information before leaving. The cottage was lovely and clean on arrival, had enough space for a 5 member family. It was in a lovely quiet location. It is well equipped, clean and in a great spot not too far away from the centre but a quiet and relaxed neighbourhood. There is washing machine and dryer, all kitchen amenities you would need. It is a great and affordable place if you visit Manchester or Peak District.

    Katalin2016-06-22T00:00:00Z
  • Jeanne provided great instructions for getting to the cottage and the location is fantastic. Really close to Uppermill and with easy access to the Peaks. The cottage was practical and had most things you'd need for a fuss free stay. However, we did feel it would benefit from a bit of investment on the sleeping side - one of the bedrooms in particular needs some investment to make it suitable for a good night's sleep.

  • Ann met us to show us the ropes, and she and the family (next door) were all so friendly The cottage is beautifully set up. We were using it to accommodate guests for a wedding, and it was a shame they could not spend more time there over the weekend, but they found it very comfortable, a lovely 'bridesmaids base' to calm them on the day. The welcome basket was a lovely touch too.

    Carola2016-07-04T00:00:00Z
  • Great accommodation in a beautiful annex set in greenfield - Anne was a fantastic host and left us an amazing welcome hamper with a lovely message attached. Amazing decor and very comfy bed and sofa. Would stay again as so lovely, felt truly welcome and the countryside is amazing- you will not be disappointed:)

  • Ann made us feel very welcome. The heat was on. She left us a lovely welcome basket of goodies. There was milk in the fridge and tea and coffee already there for us.

    Monica2016-11-07T00:00:00Z
  • Berry Cottage lived up to the description on the website; very comfortable and beautifully decorated, kitchen fully equipped, small but south-facing garden area, which was excellent for our dog. Ann was a welcoming hostess and the 'welcome' pack was very generous and unexpected. The location relative to the Peak district was great and we enjoyed a full day walking around the immediate area without having to drive anywhere. I would definitely recommend this cottage, especially if you walk and you have a dog.

    Caroline2015-09-27T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage was very clean, well equipped and cosy.It was dog friendly and the outside area secure. The owner was very helpful and provided a welcome basket containing essentials and luxury treats as well.

  • We stayed for 3 nights and couldn't have asked for a more perfect base. Ann made us feel very welcome on our arrival including well stocked goodie box. The cottage is beautiful, clean and had everything you could need. The garden to the back gave you spectacular views. Local sights, places and people were all fantastic and would love to venture to this place again.

  • This little cottage is the perfect home away from home! Sarah has paid attention to every detail and so offers a gorgeous home. The location is also great, surrounded by the countryside but also conveniently located near the train station. Sarah was the perfect host, checking in and more than happy to help with any issues (but we faced none). I cannot speak more highly of this beautiful place, would highly recommend and would come back to visit again!

  • The Wellington Cottage is a quirky beautiful decorated, comfortable and clean place to stay in. Check in was really easy and Sarah is a perfect host, happy to help and easy to communicate with. It's close to the train station and Tesco (both walkable in under 5min). I highly recommend the Cottage and would definitely come back to visit again.

    Lisa2017-10-15T00:00:00Z
  • Sarah's is a lovely sparkling clean English village cottage with so many thoughtful touches we felt immediately at home. Fresh-cut roses, huge plush bath sheets, chocolates, quality glasses and tableware and more provided by a friendly welcoming host. We'd be happy for a reason to come back. Notes for visitors ...The pub next door is reputed to serve the area's best fish and chips but get there by 6:30 for evening meal. And, stairs down to kitchen and up to bedroom + bathroom are rather steep - as they can be in older properties.

    Nell and Chris2017-10-21T00:00:00Z
  • This is a tastefully updated cottage on the main road, with easy access to the train station if you're commuting in to Manchester. One of the most comfortable beds I have ever slept in. Liked the area so much that I'm now thinking of moving there.

  • I was made to feel very welcome by Terri, both with messages before my arrival and once I arrived at her home. Very comfortable room, lovely bathroom and the breakfast/coffee room was just what was called for! Ideal location for me as I was visiting a local pub for a music show, shame the weather wasn't on my side as I couldn't experience the beautiful views of the moors.

    Barbara2016-11-14T00:00:00Z
  • Terri and John's house is gorgeous from the minute we arrived to the minute we left, we felt right at home and not like we were invading their space. The space was clean and perfectly appointed with everything you could possibly need. Tea, coffee and a selection of nibbles was provided all throughout the stay along with a lovely continental breakfast of cereals, pastries, fresh fruit and yoghurt. The Shower is fantastic and although we didnt use it a lovely large bath along with various bubble type things! If we ever stay in the area again then we will be sure to look for this place again.

Enjoy the splendour of Saddleworth and its rolling hills and moors in a farm setting but with all the modern conveniences of a newly completed apartment with all mod cons. Studio apartment with open plan double bed space and double Bed settee.
Saddleworth and the dozen or so picturesque East Lancashire/West Yorkshire villages comprising the area has a rich history dating from the Roman occupation of Britain. The first documentary evidence of Saddleworth appears in the Domesday Book in which it is referred to as "Quick", spelt "Thoac"; where it is described as "Land of the King in Eurvicsire (Yorkshire), Agbrigg Wapentake." The history of the region clearly dates further back than the Domesday Book however. Place names derived from Celtic and Anglian dialects, along with the discovery of flint arrowheads and gold Viking rings all point to a much earlier Saddleworth, possibly as old as the Stone Age. A Roman road from Chester to York passed through the area. Castleshaw Roman fort was built to defend and patrol the local section of the road. The first fort on the site was an Agricolan period fort, built in turf and timber c.AD 79. This was refurbished soon after construction and then abandoned c.AD 95. Within the south eastern half of the fort, a fortlet was constructed, also in turf and timber, c.AD 105. This was redeveloped during its brief occupation and then abandoned again in c.AD 125. Historically in the West Riding of Yorkshire, for centuries Saddleworth was a centre of woollen cloth production in the domestic system. Following the Industrial Revolution, in the 18th and 19th centuries, Saddleworth became a centre for cotton spinning and weaving. By the end of Queen Victoria's reign, mechanised textile production had become a vital part of the local economy. One of the most famous mills, based in Friezland, was the Royal George Mill owned by the Whitehead family and manufactured felt used for many purposes including pianofortes, billiard tables and flags. The three brothers, Ralph Radcliffe Whitehead, James Heywood Whitehead and Francis Frederick Whitehead who owned the Mill were extremely philanthropic and amongst other bequests in the 1850s built Christ Church in Friezland along with the Parsonage, School and Headmaster's house. The land on which these were built was purchased in 1849 from L. & N.W. Railway Company. Christ Church, Friezland is still thriving today whilst the Church School has been rebuilt and the beguiling Parsonage and grounds, built in the Gothic Revival style, has become a Grade || Listed Building and as "Friezland Grange" is now in private hands. The boom in industry called for greater transport links, including the Huddersfield Narrow Canal and several railways. Following the Great Depression Saddleworth's textile sector declined. Much of Saddleworth's architecture and infrastructure dates from its textile processing days however, notably the Saddleworth Viaduct and several cottages and terraces, many built by the local mill owners. For centuries Saddleworth was linked, ecclesiastically, with the parish of Rochdale and was long talked of as the part of Yorkshire where Lancastrians lived. The former Saddleworth Urban District was the only part of the West Riding to have been amalgamated into Greater Manchester in 1974.

My place is close to 2min on train to Manchester /Huddersfield & Manchester airport. You’ll love my place because of the location Set overlooking the Manchester/ Huddersfield canal & River Tame close to the Pennine hills. My place is good for couples, solo adventurers, and business travellers.
  • A good option 20 minutes away from Manchester. Trains usually run every hour so take this in mind. The platform gives you the name of the street but not the numer, is 16! David cares a lot about you and your stay. Great breakfast. The only drawback of the room is that it is pretty small and has a white blind, so too much light enters in the morning. He told us maybe he will change the blind for another. On the whole, a lovely stay in Manchester.

  • David was such a wonderful host; so kind and responsive and welcoming, a complete delight to stay with! I was in the North for my good friend's wedding; and out of the kindness of his heart David even drove me to Uppermill, where the wedding was! I am really thankful David :) The house is really wonderful and cosy, and really clean, with a beautiful patio that looks onto the riverside. All the best to you, David! Elina

  • Another pleasant stay with David, who was unruffled by my knocking down the rollblind in the bedroom for the second consecutive visit.

  • David has a beautiful home right on a canal with ducks and geese. Great walkway next to the canal for a morning or afternoon walk. David provides a nice breakfast every morning with your choice of toast and jam plus cereal and fresh juice. Great value for the money, clean comfortable and not far from Manchester by train . We would definitely stay there again

  • I had a very pleasant stay in David's townhouse, situated picturesquely by a canal. David is an easy-going and generous host.

  • The area was beautiful, not too much of a walk to get to the nearby town or trails. Hosts were very welcoming, helping us find our way to the house after a very long drive and greeting us with a bottle of wine before letting us settle in for our stay. The cottage is nicely secluded on the top of a hill with great views. Our hosts also provided maps to trails and local attractions both walking and driving distance. Would visit again.

Edwardian house with original character features, close to the pennines with fantastic walks & very near to Mossley Station & only 20 minute train ride to Manchester centre. Good for families, couples, solo adventurers and business travellers. 2 reception rooms & 2 double bedrooms. Lovely views of hills/woodland to front and back. Freshly renovated kitchen leading onto country garden with bistro table & chairs. Near to lots of nice restaurants, heritage sites and the Saddleworth villages.
DOWNSTAIRS There are two reception rooms downstairs and brand new quaker kitchen with access to the back garden with seating area by dramatic cliff woodland. The living room and kitchen are open plan. The separate dining room can be made into an additional bedroom with a single camp bed if required. UPSTAIRS The master bedroom has a king size bed, wardrobe, draws, TV and a lovely view of the Pennine hills and trees. The second bedroom to the back of the house which is actually the biggest room is used as an office and can be used as a second bedroom. I have a king size memory foam mattress that can be made up into a bed (it's actually very comfy sleeping on the memory foam mattress on the floor). I also have a single mattress which can be made up at the other side of the room (so this room can actually sleep 3). Just bear in mind that the other guests have to go through this room to access the only bathroom (it's an old house and the bathroom was built as an extension on the back with direct access from the back bedroom).
There's lots of great rural places to explore with the pennines, Dovestones Reservoir, canal walks, heritage trails, the Saddleworth villages and lots of independent restaurants/cafes/take-aways/pubs nearby, and of course Manchester City Centre is only a 20 minute train journey away (I live 5 minutes from the station) with lots of bars, restaurants, galleries, theatres, cinemas, shops.
  • Stayed as a group of 5 friends for a long weekend in August, and it was the perfect place to relax and enjoy the beautiful countryside around Mossley - recommend definitely walking to the reservoirs! Ben's place has everything you need, and it's really homely, with comfortable beds and sofas and a lovely little kitchen. He also explained everything really clearly and gave us advice too about the area too when we were wondering what to explore. Thanks so much Ben - we'd recommend a stay to anyone!

    Sydney2017-08-28T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay at Ben’s place. The house is massive, beautifully decorated and really comfortable. It was a two, maybe three minute walk to the train station which made getting into Manchester really easy. We particularly loved having a coffee in the garden with the imposing cliffs providing a dramatic setting. Ben was easy to deal with and very accommodating. Thanks very much!

    Joe and Doron2016-07-05T00:00:00Z
  • We wanted a weekend in Manchester and staying in town is so expensive. We chose Ben's place because we are interested in exploring different places around the Manchester area and it was close to a railway station into the city. We drove into town and let the kids take the train so we could be independent. Both were very easy and took about twenty minutes. We visited some of the range of pubs in Mossley and noted that there is a fish and chip shop, Indian takeaway and late opening Co-op in the village. We had driven from Southampton and were able to squeeze into a space infront of the house. Ben was very welcoming and invited us to use tea and milk etc that were in the house as well as the piano and other instruments. There was a comprehensive list of instructions for the cooker etc incase we fogot what Ben had explained to us. We immediately felt at home in this well equipped, warm and beautiful home. The village/ small town of Mossley is a charming place. Built of local stone and settling into the crags and hillsides of the Peak District, it's a short drive into the city. Sometimes when you arrive at your destination you are disappointed that the reality of the place doesn't match up to the pictures shown of it. Ben's place is the opposite. The photos do not do justice to this clean, warm, well equipped and beautiful home. With lots of recent improvements, all in great taste and style, interesting pictures, musical instruments and local information books, there was plenty to keep us entertained without once putting on the tv. There are great views from the upstairs windows overlooking the Peak District. The only potential issue with the house might be that the bathroom leads off the second bedroom. Next time we come to Manchester we will definitely try and book Ben's house : )

  • Ben's place was spotless and cosy. We easily walked from the station and had a lovely view of the amazing rock face through his pretty garden. he left us breakfast and was super trusting with all his lovely possessions so it felt v much like home from home. Perfect for weary relaxation after the long days training course we were attending.

  • Ben was welcoming and had made sure everything was perfect. We really loved his house, not least because it had pictures of all our favourite musicians throughout! You're just missing Duke Special, Ben - YouTube him! We were very comfortable indeed and I started each morning sitting in the rocking chair looking out of the pretty leaded window, sadly mostly at the rain, but also at the very dramatic garden backdrop! We wouldn't hesitate to stay there again and heartily recommend Ben and his gorgeous house. Thank you for having us, hope to see you again sometime.

  • Great place to stay. Delightful cosy house lovely and warm. Close to trains, shops, Manchester and Yorkshire. Nice and quiet area. We did a 2day leather course in nearby mill, it was ideal. Just 10min walk by canal to mill. Great little wine bar on way back. It was perfect for us. Great matresses/beds we slept well. We will use Bens house again when we do the advanced leather course next year. Want to make a leather bag? Check out Jasons courses...the diamond awl. Great house, great bag.

A walkers paradise! beautiful scenery and plenty of festivals, farmers markets, country pubs, events & shows to take in. Close to the Pennine Way and Peak District National Park.
  • We had a great overnight stay in between two days of long hikes around Dovestones (arrive early if you don't want to queue for a parking space at the reservoir). The cottage was a fab place to rest our tired legs in between, & we'll definitely stay again if it's available the next time we're hiking in the area! The cottage was surprisingly well stocked with various toiletries you might have forgotten; if you're travelling light you can just take shampoo as everything else is provided or can be bought from the Co-Op at the bottom of the road. In the evening we went for a drink in the local pub then a delicious Italian meal at Fresca, a short walk away, & after cereal for breakfast in the cottage (provided) we then picked up a tasty bacon sandwich to take hiking with us from Edna's Cosy Café at the bottom of the road. Next time we'll stay longer so we can fit in a walk up the hill behind the cottage too :)

We didn't have much to do with Anne and Phil but they were available had we needed them and they made contact before the trip. The chocolate in the fridge was a lovely touch- especially given the nightmare journey we had from Cornwall! Thank you- definitely reccomend!

  • This place delivered on everything that was promised and more ! The reviewers that were here before me, were absolutely right, so mine is another 5-star review for Anne and Phil. You'll get the best of both worlds: one the one hand you'll have your own apartment for yourself, but if you like you can have interaction with the family which is like the original intent of AirBNB. I was there for 2 nights bordering the Whit Friday brassband contests, turns out Phil is a former brass player who knows everything about it. Anne very kindly offered to introduce me to the contest organisers on the day before, and she took me to Delph bandroom for a drink, that was so lovely ! The riverside terrace is so very pretty, unfortunately I didn't have enough time because I was out for the music all the time, but hopefully I'll get to sit there next year, yes sorry guys, Whit Friday 2018 is already booked (by me !).

    Judith2017-06-10T00:00:00Z

Lovely twin/double room in large detached house on the edge of glorious countryside. Ideal as a base for walking - the Pennines are on my doorstep - or for nipping into Manchester - just 30 mins on the tram. Balcony with panoramic views.
The convenience of being near the city but with a countryside setting. Ensuite bathroom, clean, modern bedroom with wifi connection and family home feel that welcomes everyone. Gym and sauna available on site with instruction if required.
The outskirts of Oldham abutt the lovely countryside of the Pennines and the gorgeous Saddleworth district. Renowned for its beauty, hills, canals and quaint villages. Come to walk, shop, relax and if you feel the need for some excitement and culture, head into Manchester.
  • I was made to feel very welcome, especially as Caroline was not able to be there when I arrived, but her partner showed me to my room, helped me with my luggage, and suggested an excellent nearby pub where I could have dinner. The room was delightful with a lovely view over the garden onto the hills behind and a distant view over Manchester. It was very comfortable with a good sized bed, very clean and nice bathroom and wide balcony where I sat after dinner and watched the sun go down. It was very quiet and I had a good night's sleep. Delicious breakfast in the morning with scrambled eggs and bacon, toast and fruit juice and coffee. Perfect. Strongly recommended to stay there if you are in the Oldham area as it is near the centre but actually up a winding narrow road into the hills above. Ideal.

  • Brilliant stay again, very well looked after, great fun and very friendly, even the dog has a lovely nature too. The early morning birdsong (specially laid on ;-) was great!

  • All around a fantastic experience. The house is positioned with a beautiful view from all angles of the gorgeous countryside. We used it as a base for doing several very enjoyable hikes. Caroline is extremely hospitable and helpful with regard to local advice. 10/10

    Adrian2017-05-07T00:00:00Z
  • Caroline was very welcoming and her home is a great escape from the hustle and bustle that city life brings. It is close enough to the city for easy reach, yet far enough to enjoy the peace of the countryside. The view from the room and around is great and well located if you want to go for walk. The en suite and small utility room is a great addition. A great stay overall.

The area boasts many popular events throughout the year including The Whit Walks, Yanks weekend, Rushcart, Party the in the Park, Marsden Jazz Festival, Diggle Blues Festival and of course the world famous Saddleworth Brass Band competition. There are many others too numerous to mention here. The area is popular with sports enthusiasts with horse riding, golf, swimming and many other sports facilities nearby.
  • The cottage was very comfortable and in a very nice area with lovely views. Les and Karen will give all the information that is needed , we had a very nice 3 day break and check in could not have been any easier. Les even came in and lit the log burner for us

    charles2017-08-16T00:00:00Z
  • Great Hosts. Very flexible with our check in as we were out walking and weren't sure when we'd be arriving. Les was extremely accommodating and they recommended a great local pub which did fantastic food at a very modest prices. Being from the city I almost fainted when I could get s pint for less than £3!!! Stunning views over the Saddleworth moor from bedroom. Cottage is very cosy with everything you'd need for self catering. But with the pub food so good we didn't do much! Would definitely stay again!

  • A wonderful rural location. Extremely comfortable and clean. Stayed for business and was a lovely escape at the end of each day. Les was a great host, excellent communication.

  • The cottage is in a lovely setting, great views down the valley, and it's beautifully quiet there. Everything you need for a comfortable stay is already there for you and it was spotlessly clean. Great location for walkers or for people who just want to get away from everyday noise and enjoy the peace and quiet. I'd highly recommend the place to anyone.

    Paul2017-08-07T00:00:00Z
  • We loved the cottage, which is attached to but fully separate from the owners' farmhouse - Les and Karen are more than helpful. Lovely views down the valley to Diggle, with a couple of private garden terraces for warmer months. We were there for Marsden Jazz Festival, just over the hill and this was an ideal retreat. Good Pennine walking country on the doorstep!

    Nigel2017-10-09T00:00:00Z
  • This is a beautiful Airbnb cottage deep nestled away on the edge of the moors. It's wonderfully clean neat and tidy and run by a very attentive, yet not intrusive, Karen and Lesley, who live next door. There is a lovely wood burning stove for the colder night as well as central heating and 2 en-suite bedrooms with individual showers. The floors are all wooden or stone flagged so slippers or big socks are recommended, particularly in the colder months. This is very much a holiday cottage type Airbnb meaning nothing is provided in terms of kitchen cupboard or bathroom essentials (apart from tea, instant coffee and sugar) so make sure you bring everything you need as there is nowhere nearby to get anything from! There is no wifi in the property and phone signal was poor for us (on Three), although Les said it was better for other service providers, a blessing or a curse depending on why you are staying :) This is a beautiful place to come and spend some R&R time and get away. The property is a fair price, we would re-book if we need to stay in the area again.

    Peter2017-09-24T00:00:00Z
  • beautiful location, beautiful views. Would be good all year round, wood burner for winter and outside area for the sunshine. Nearly everything you'd need to self cater. Slightly creaky wood floors and stairs that you can hear if anyone gets up in the night but I slept through thr

103 year old "Hazel" recently restored . There is a wheechair lift and limited disabled access to the forward half of the boat. The bathroom has a wetroom shower and flushing toilet. There is a woodstove for heating which heats radiators in the bedrooms. On longer stays it may be necessary to move the boat occasionally to charge batteries. Portland Basin, is her home base but some of the time she is in Stalybridge.
It's hard to fit a boat into the template. Going in at the front there's a saloon heated by a woodstove (plenty of fuel provided) with seats that can be converted to 3 beds. Beyond this is the kitchen with a full size cooker, fridge and plenty of cupboard space. The bathroom is next, this is roomy to accommodate a wheelchair and has a flushing toilet (on longer stays it may be necessary to move the boat to empty the tank) and a wetroom shower (don't forget to switch on the pump or you'll be paddling). A side corridor brings you to the side bedroom, which can be configured as a double or a single, and then the back bedroom which can be a double, a single or 2 bunks or a double with bunk bed over. The traditional back cabin can provide 2 more berths (making an absolute maximum of 10) but is difficult of access to the bathroom and the sidebed is suitable only for small people. Some agility is needed for accessing this.
Stalybridge is a pleasant town in the Tame Valley, hemmed in by the Pennine Hills. This location is ideal for walking into the hills or exploring the easy way up the towpath. The Bulls Head is an excellent pub nearby and it's just a 10 minute walk to the famous Buffet Bar, purveying a staggering selection of real ales which you can consume whilst enjoying watching the trains. The micro pub on Melbourne St is also worth a visit. There's a folk club there on Saturday evenings. There's a blues based jam session at The White House on a Monday evening and The Wharf, near lock 4, has a folk club on alternate Tuesdays. There's a large Tesco nearby and an Aldi. For vegetables there's a shop selling quality and organic veg on Melbourne St ,opposite a quality butchers.
  • Lovely little boat and friendly owners

    Paul2017-03-12T00:00:00Z
  • Totally recommend "Hazel" she is cosy, enchanting and very loved by all that own and look after her. I stayed with my dog at the museum basin in Ashton which was perfect for access for my work and wonderfully safe and secure by night. It is a lovely home from home and felt like a little mini adventure to boot and perfect for my little dog. We both loved the experience and will be back to support Chris and his fantastic volunteers in their great charity work and commitment to social issues. We plan to try "Hazel" at Śtalybridge next time.

  • Amanda's Place is a great facility, situated in a converted hall in the western Pennines just outside Delph. Two en-suite double rooms is a particular bonus for families or two couples wanting to explore the area or use as a base close enough to Manchester, but far enough away to feel like another world. As per other reviews, while I'm aware Amanda had addressed reported intermittent issues with the internet connection, unfortunately it manifested as a problem within my own stay too, but I suspect this is now an exception, not the rule. Beyond that I recommend this property highly

Chris was an extremely helpful and friendly host, while the Cabin was immaculate and modern, with every possible amenity and open access to the hottub. The house and gallery was once the Old Co-Op, or general store which supplied the village with everything from firewood to flour, and from bacon to milk. This bedroom is on the first floor which was used for the storage and the original winch and trapdoor from 1880 are still in working order. Museum pieces by your bedroom! This bedroom has a single and a very comfy fold down bed-settee. The bedroom is at the front of the house with stunning views across the Mill Pond to the hills beyond.
The Gallery is available as a work space, to read or draw, or just for a chat and to admire the paintings. Drinks are available from the Cellar Bar as the Gallery is a licenced premises. Food is available, award winning dinners, breakfasts and scones! There is also a settee on the landing.
Padfield is a quiet village in the Peak District National Park, with many, many walks of all levels within easy reach of the Gallery
  • Absolutely fabulous, Sean and his daughter made sure that my stay with my small dog was extra special. The highlight was choosing a print from the gallery, then meeting the artist the following morning. Next time I shall book in for the Thursday Art Workshop!

    m2017-11-03T00:00:00Z
  • My gf and I were delighted to be Sean’s first air bnb guests! What an excellent host, great location and gorgeous, historical property. The Laughing Badger Gallery is a terrific space consisting of an art gallery with local artists displayed and a cellar bar which serves local beers/ales and has live music. The bedrooms are located upstairs and there is a massive kitchen area to make tea/coffee etc. The bedroom was very comfy and there will soon be 3 bedrooms available so bring your friends along and make a weekend out of it. Padfield is perfectly located to explore the Peak District. There are walks literally from the doorstep. Glossop is also only a 5 min drive away with a bustling weekend nightlife (although nothing will compare to an evening in the cellar bar!) Sean was extremely helpful and welcoming. We will definitely be staying here again on our next visit to the Peak District!
