“The first castle was built on the high hill named Várhegy at Felsőtárkány near Eger. During the Mongol invasion in 1241, this castle was ruined, and the bishop of Eger moved it to a rocky hill in the city of Eger. On the hill, a new castle was built, and it developed rapidly. In 1470 a Gothic palace was built. In 1552, a Turkish army of 35,000-40,000 soldiers attacked the castle which had 2,100-2,300 defenders. The siege failed as the Turks suffered heavy casualties. A total of 1,700 of the defenders survived. After that Turks besieged the castle again in 1596, resulting in a Turkish victory. In 1701, the Austrians exploded half of the castle (the Külső vár). Archaeological excavations only started in 1925 and the castle was used by the army as barracks until 1957.”

Monument / Landmark
“The northernmost medieval minaret in Europe (i.e., the northernmost one except those built by immigrant communities in the last decades) and the tallest in Hungary (the other two are in Pécs and Érd) the minaret is a 42 meter high symbol of the Turkish occupation. It is 97 steps to the top, but be warned, the climb up is in an incredibly enclosed space on uneven and slippery steps and there is little room to move around up top so those who are afraid of heights or tight places should just enjoy it from the outside. Open for visitors from April to November.”

“ Bejáratát oszlopcsarnok hangsúlyozza, melynek 17 méteres korinthoszi oszlopain timpanon nyugszik. E fölé emelkedik a magasított oromzat, amelyen 3 allegorikus szobor áll. Nyugati végén két 55 méteres torony magasodik. A bazilika külső hossza 93 méter, szélessége 53 méter, kupolája magassága 37 méter. A templom külső falán több dombormű található, odabent további huszonnégy. A főbejárat előtti lépcső mellett négy szobor sorakozik: Szent István, Szent László, Péter apostol és Pál apostol. A templom mennyezetfreskói 1950-ben készültek el. A jelenlegi szentélyt és márvány szószéket 1910-ben fejezték be. Az oltárkép Olajban főtt Szent Jánost ábrázolja.”

Museum
“The unique exhibition will showcase the works of Lajos Kopcsik Oscar-winner, Olympic and world champion, and Guinness record-maker of confectionery. The 120 items were all made of sugar pulp and marzipan, like a nearly two-meter bottle of wine or a miniature replica of Minaret. The exhibition also holds true specialties for children, as fairy-tale heroes come alive from the mass of sugar.”
