Your guide to Exmouth
All About Exmouth
Just 20 minutes from the city of Exeter on the east coast of Devon, Exmouth is one of the oldest seaside towns in Britain. Exmouth’s main draw are its three kilometres of beautiful sandy beach, which are ideal for swimmers and sandcastle architects alike and offer many interesting rock pools to explore. The town is also known for watersports, as the waters here offer ideal conditions for sailing, kite surfing, and kayaking.
Exmouth is the gateway to the tremendous Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage site praised for its outstanding historical significance. The 150-kilometre stretch of unspoilt coastline along the South Coast dates back 250 million years and boasts an abundance of dramatic cliffs, hidden caves, coastal stacks, and fossils. You can explore it on a scenic walk that begins from the east of the town, or enjoy a guided boat tour. The popular Southwest Coast Path also runs through the town and continues along the South Coast for more than 1,000 kilometres, passing many beaches and picturesque villages.
The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Exmouth
Exmouth is a great year-round destination, with many holiday homes and cottages to choose from for your stay. In summer, you can expect warm sunny days, perfect for enjoying the beach, so make sure you pack a hat and sunscreen. In May, the free Exmouth Festival brings live music, family entertainment, arts and crafts, and food to town. Spring and autumn are also pleasant times to visit, when you can expect mostly mild days for enjoying the outdoors. Be aware that you are likely to experience some rain and cooler days, so bring your layers. If you’re visiting in October, you may catch the Exmouth Illuminated Carnival, where a street procession featuring spectacular lighted floats and people dressed in costumes winds through the town centre. A winter visit means colder temperatures and the likelihood of rain, so pack a warm jacket and gloves.
Top things to do in Exmouth
Exmouth Promenade
The three-kilometre promenade on Exmouth Beach is the ideal place for a relaxing stroll. In summer, you’ll pass by musical performances along the promenade. For a romantic walk, come back at night when the esplanade is beautifully lit up, offering spectacular views. The promenade has easy-to-navigate paths for cyclists and wheelchair users.
The Geoneedle
On the eastern end of Exmouth beach stands the Geoneedle at Orcombe Point, marking the beginning of the Jurassic Coast. Sitting high on the clifftop, this impressive landmark was constructed from a variety of the rocks found in the region. From here, you’ll also enjoy stunning views of the coastline and beachfront, as well as the beautiful rolling countryside around the town.
Exe Estuary Trail
Hire a bike in town and enjoy an easy cycle along the 26-kilometre, mainly flat route along the Exe Estuary, which also provides fantastic views of the River Exe. From Exmouth, you’ll first come to the picturesque villages of Lympstone and Exton before reaching Topsham, where you’ll find restaurants, boutiques, and antique shops. Then it’s onto Exeter Quay, with more cafes and arts and crafts shops. Continue cycling further, and you’ll pass the impressive Powderham Castle, reaching the end of the trail in the town of Dawlish.
