  • Darwin met us at the property when we arrived and showed us around. The house is very spacious and clean. The yard is large with plenty of room for relaxing and privacy. We would definitely stay here again.

  • This is an isolated cabin in a beautiful location. It's a perfect place to get off the grid and away from it all. Roxy was very helpful and responsive when we needed something, and otherwise she left us in perfect privacy. We'll definitely come back any chance we get.

  • A beautiful quiet location by a bend in the river with gorgeous trees, hamocks and a fire pit. House had everything we needed and plenty more besides, like the still warm muffins that greeted us on arrival. Easy to get in even though we arrived really late and Roxy was charming and helpful. Recommended.

    Tom2017-08-25T00:00:00Z
  • Darwin's place was everything you expect for and hope for in an AirBNB. The home was clean, there was more than enough room for all of us (there was 6 of us). Every one was comfortable and happy of the location chosen. We will definitely return and hopefully sooner than later.

    Bridget2017-08-13T00:00:00Z
  • Everything we needed for a relaxing getaway was provided and the house, location and hosts were just great. The house was very clean inside, the beds were comfortable, the air conditioner and ceiling fans cooled the place really well and the washer and dryer was a bonus. If I'm ever in the area again I wouldn't hesitate to stay here.

    Jeff2016-06-17T00:00:00Z
  • My girlfriend and I got an idea for a midweek getaway and decided to book a cabin on short notice (about 9pm the night before). Roxy was surprised but was kind enough to accommodate our thoughtless request by 10pm. The cabin was perfect: private, quiet, and soooo comfortable. Everything was clean and in good working order. The backyard was beautifully mowed but interspersed with wilder areas that led to the creek. The firefly show at night was mesmerizing! We immediately felt at home here and didn't want to leave. This place is a real gem and Roxy was very friendly but also respectful of our privacy. I don't know who made the banana bread breakfast treat but they deserve a medal.

    Jason2016-07-07T00:00:00Z
  • We enjoyed our second visit just as much as our first! Thank you Roxy and Darwin for your hospitality.

    william2017-07-07T00:00:00Z
  • This was a great place to stay! It would be great for a romantic getaway or with a family ! The property is absolutely gorgeous and well worth the trip alone! However, there are also a number of beautiful little towns in the neighboring areas as well! This place is relaxing, off the beaten path, secluded and downright amazing. The hosts are very gracious and go the extra mile with adding in so many special little details. We loved the bonfire, enjoying the sound of the wind in the trees, the river running through the property as well as the amazing lighting bug show. We will be back and highly recommend staying at this little slice of heaven!

  • Super comfortable and clean. Stocked with everything you need. Sheryl was prompt with communication even though she was taking part in a local wedding celebration. Congrats to the newlyweds! Added bonus, we were able to catch a barge passing though the lock which is just across the street. Also close, Jim's Pizza where I suggest you stop for some awesome ice cream! Great stay.

  • We wanted to get away from the city for Father's Day with our youngest daughter and our small dog. We found this beautiful home with a view from the bluffs overlooking the mighty Mississippi River- it is as beautiful in person as it is in the photo's. We enjoyed the large yard and played a game of Croquet. Then retired to the house to watch the Cubs win (!!!) and played a board game. We slept well in very comfortable beds. We enjoyed the quite peaceful setting, watching the birds and taking in the AM views. There was a coffee maker and a microwave for making tea : ) We enjoyed relaxing and chatting with Lisa and Steve. We enjoyed a hike at Pikes Peak before heading home.

  • Very peaceful. Worked great as a home base for my day trips up and down the river. It was just what I needed. I would leave about 8:00 in the morning and return after dark.

  • The space is very clean and spacious. The beds were comfortable and there was a good assortment of coffees, teas, and snacks. The view of the Mississippi River from the back yard can't be beat!

  • We had a wonderful stay and would like to come back. The weather was overcast and a little rainy but the views were still amazing from the property. The property was like a private apartment. Very clean and had everything you need.

    Kim2016-10-16T00:00:00Z
  • The hostess was very accommodating for our arrival. It was a wonderful amount of space (we were only 2 adults but the space could have easily accommodated 5). It was very clean and comfortable. The view was fantastic but if the weather would not have allowed for outside viewing, there was plenty to do inside with a huge screen tv and satellite available for plenty of options, plus a pool table and board games. Lisa and her husband were friendly and gave us helpful info about the area. It was a great experience!

  • It was just as described in the listing . Overall would stay there again .

  • Had a great time in Bagley. We come very late and he was there to welcome us. Tim was friendly, help us with our journey the next day. Great location close to Wyalusing State Park. The place was as advertised and stocked with things we may have needed . Kitchen stocked with everything you need. Coffeemaker with coffee provided. Which is a plus for me.

    Rooshana2015-10-12T00:00:00Z
  • Tim had everything we needed and even helped with a few things we forgot. The old trailer had good heat/air conditioning, a big TV with 30 channels, Wifii and modern connectivity. It was nice sitting in the front yard listening to the wind chimes and occasional train. Every time I heard the whistle blow I thought to myself "I'm on vacation" Any place near the Mississippi river will have the train rolling by every hour or so but in case you have trouble with it he's got ear plugs. Very comfy beds no back aches. We loved our stay.

    Steven R 2017-05-29T00:00:00Z
  • What a great hidden little gem this place was. We hadn't been in town more than 30 seconds before we made our first friend, and another new friend within five minutes offering to escort us to the gas station. Tim had the house ready to walk right in and there was not a thing missing. We wouldn't have even needed to bring our own coffee, even that was stocked. This was my first airbnb rental and it certainly will not be my last. Thanks Tim!

Welcome to Valley Mills Miller's Cottage, where the beauty of "Mother Nature" surrounds you. Built six years after Iowa became a state in 1847, it is located in a remote picturesque valley containing Buck Creek Trout Stream. It is completely surrounded by wooded Bluffs, known as "Cold Slopes", that are owned and managed by The Nature Conservancy (identified on their website as "Nature Bluebell Hollow"). Staying at Valley Mills Miller's Cottage is a "glamping" experience to be treasured.
It is "Nature Therapy" at it's best. The area is a remote paradise of nature. Ideal for large families, reunions and "Get togethers" with plenty of places for guest to roam and entertain inside and out. Front Family Room is modern with fireplace , ceiling fan, picture window view of valley and garden, and 50" LCD Satellite TV. Rest of cottage is quite rustic in appeal, including wood stove and LP kitchen range (1940 Chambers), but has somewhat modern kitchen conveniences including refrigerator, toaster, microwave, and coffee maker,
Location is remote and at the end of a "Dead End" gravel road (4 wheel drive recommended in winter) . Closest neighbor lives 1/2 mile away. Only traffic are Trout Fishermen, who park next to Trout Stream. Their parking area is outside fenced in Cottage and Mill. Hiking Trails at Pikes Peak State Park (Free), Effigy Mounds National Park, plus many County Hiking Trails all within 20 miles.
  • Our stay was wonderful. It was a beautiful and secluded area with a trout stream on property. Norma, the host, was very welcoming and helpful. Allowing our pet was a huge plus and we are so thankful! We would not have been able to take a vacation had we not been able to bring her along. Thanks again!

    Melissa2016-10-10T00:00:00Z
  • Great place to distress and enjoy nature and going back in time with the age of the house. Had beautiful weather for August and spent our days sitting outside watching the variety of swallowtail butterflies, birds, etc. Very peaceful and slept the best we have in awhile. Loved the walks along the creek. A place you will want to stay and not go anywhere for days there is so much nature to enjoy! Thanks!

    Robert2017-08-13T00:00:00Z
  • This was a great getaway weekend. You are very secluded. People did come down the road to get to the stream but everyone was friendly that we spoke with. Sprint cellular service worked but my Sprint data and At&t hotspot didn't work out here. The closest big store was a 10-15 min drive to the next city. Bugs weren't too bad. The cottage had everything we needed. The first floor was a little hot, but this is where the kitchen, bath, and one living room is and there were fans. The stove takes longer than a newer stove and they have a toaster, microwave, electric skillet, and coffee maker. The next floor was cooler with window air conditioner in room, with other living room on same level. The next level is a steeper climb but is the coolest level with two air conditioners in each of the bedrooms. We had 5 adults plus kids so it was a full house. One bathroom had it's struggles, but there was always hot water. It is kid friendly but not kid proof, but the large yard can wear a kid out. We had a bald eagle fly over while playing baseball in the large field, which was definitely a highlight of the trip. We saw frogs and some a few skinks, lots of birds. The kids had fun with the stream, but bring water shoes if you can and try to cover legs since there could be some poisonous/itchy weeds if going to the stream. The yard was well mowed, the house is on a hill but down by the Mill is a large playing field. This was ideal for what we planned since we met family from IL, everyone had fun exploring and relaxing. Beds and furniture were all comfortable. Everyone had a great time. Checkin and checkout was flexible and friendly.

    Jmind2016-09-06T00:00:00Z
  • Our group enjoyed the house as it worked out really well for our guys golf trip. There was enough room for all of us to spread out. Thanks for the use of your cabin.

    David2016-08-15T00:00:00Z
  • Well done. Clean, well stocked, great unique out of the way place. Would stay there again in an instant.

    David2016-07-17T00:00:00Z
  • This place was absolutely beautiful. My husband, our friends and myself had a wonderful time. It was extremely peaceful and perfect for get away. It suited 7 of us just fine. The flowers Norma left for us were beautiful and made the ladies feel extra special. Norma & her daughter were extremely pleasant when we arrived and gave a great tour and were able to answer our questions and made us feel very comfortable. Before leaving we were already discussing when we would be able to book a trip again. Anyone that is looking for a little peaceful get away with or with out kids this truly is a perfect spot. I want to thank Ivan & Doris for opening their cottage up to us. And Thank you Norma for being our go to if we needed anything . Fabulous Vacation

    Amy2016-08-08T00:00:00Z
  • This cottage is indeed rural & rustic. We rented it for the long Christmas weekend. Norma was on hand to greet us & gave a tour of the home. Christmas candy & flowers on each bed were an unexpected surprise. Great lengths were gone to to make sure our stay was as pleasant as possible. For a home of this age, it was incredibly clean! We took some time to go on a hike along the creek (watch out for cow pies!) The gurgling of the water is something you can hear from the house & it was very relaxing sound. The bluffs are amazing! Wildlife abounds! We saw deer, birds & an eagle in a tree near the yard (& cows in the pasture next to the house). As for the cottage, we had some concern regarding one bathroom & 8 people, but it was not a problem in the least. The steps up to each floor are very steep & if you have trouble with stairs, this may not be the best place for you to stay. Since the bathroom is on the ground floor, steps will be a part of getting there from any bedroom. The kitchen was good sized & was able to accommodate all 8 of us at one sitting. The stove is old fashioned, using a pilot light & having to physically light the burners & oven with a match. If you are scared of lighting this stove each time you want to cook, do not rent this place. Though it worked great, cooking our Christmas turkey to perfection, I was never the one lighting it & was happy that someone else was willing to do that. At night, it is VERY DARK outside. We had cloudy skies during our stay, so there was no moonlight or stars. I have no doubt you could see every star in the sky on a clear night. Flashlights are in almost every room of this house, so finding the bathroom at night is not a problem. There is a modern washer & dryer in the bathroom. The heat is provided by a boiler that gurgles (not pleasingly like the stream outside), but made the house very comfortable during our stay. We did not need extra blankets on the comfortable beds. We wouldn't hesitate to rent this lovely cottage again. I would love to be there when there are leaves on the trees & we could spend more time outside.

    Kris2015-12-27T00:00:00Z
  • If your looking for a picturesque and quite weekend away then this is the place to stay. Located directly above the creek. While sitting in the den of the house you can view the beautiful cliff and creek. Even some friendly cows nearby. The house is very spacious but the den with fire place is so cozy you won't want to leave. Host Norma and Bryan went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable. House is equipped with anything you would need for a weekend away. The only tip we would offer if you are not comfortable with wildlife or box elder bugs then this is not the house for you. We loved seeing the bald eagles, deer, muskrats & other animals in the yard and by the creek.

  • Perfect location! Just steps away from the gorgeous little town that is Elkader. Great place, clean and tidy, and Rebecca was a wonderful and helpful host. Short drive to all the hikes and sight seeing of Northeast Iowa. Would highly recommend this place to others.

    Rachel2016-07-05T00:00:00Z
  • Rebecca and Scott met us at the location and walked us through the property. The space was clean and nicely appointed. Some issues were a lack of internet and the satellite TV service was not working in the suite we had originally booked so we took the lower suite. A nice touch was donuts from a popular local bakery as well as milk and sparkling apple juice. The neighborhood was quiet and the house is close to some restaurants, antique shops and taverns. The location is good for day trips to area tourist destinations and towns.

    Joe2016-05-31T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful, delightful, peaceful, comfortable and beautiful. We easily made arrangements with Rebecca, she greeted us at the door and accommodated our group of 4 in style. Her suites are tastefully decorated, fully equipped and nicely hosted. We would go back in a moment. Everyone in our group appreciated the suites, their location (nearby restaurant, coffee shop and swimming in the river) and the town of Elkader. We were bicycling in northeast Iowa for 5 days and were very glad we included Elkader and "A Simple Peaceful Suite" on our itinerary.

  • Richard was standing on the sidewalk outside "The Old Jail" and said hello as I got out of my car. He showed me inside where he introduced me to Charlene. You really can't beat that for a welcome. The listing was right on. McGregor is a wonderful old river town and their airBnB is right smack dab in the middle of town. It is an unbeatable location for anyone looking to stay in the area. Two steps and you are in the place which was perfect for my older parents. They loved it!

    Robert2016-07-23T00:00:00Z
  • We loved this place! It was very clean and homey, the hosts were friendly and we hope to stay again!

    Cindy2017-03-05T00:00:00Z
  • The Old Jail and Firehouse was a delightful place for our 2-night stay in McGregor. It's centrally located in town, making it easy to walk to restaurants, shops and the waterfront. Richard and Charlene go out of their way to be helpful - Richard was waiting for us when we arrived and gave us a quick tour, and he's left notes everywhere to let you know where things are and how to use them (e.g., what lights are activated by which light-switches, what's in the cabinets). The apartment is very clean and loaded with firehouse paraphernalia, which was really fun to look at. And the refrigerator and cabinets are stocked with wonderful things - little bottles of milk, juice and wine; breakfast pastries and cereal; coffee; etc. Sadly, it was rainy during our stay, so we didn't get to enjoy the private courtyard - it's lovely! A few things to consider when you visit: 1) Let Richard know in advance if you're sensitive to scents, so that he can remove the plug-in infusers before you arrive. 2) Most restaurants in town close by 8 pm (9 on weekends). We arrived about 8 and found the restaurants closed - but when we stopped in at the Pocket City Pub, the folks there kindly shared their carry-out pizza with us! 3) If you want to visit Pike's Peak state park, don't follow the (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) Map instructions, which will take you to an entrance several miles from town. There is an entrance to the park right in McGregor.

  • Quaint town, beautiful scenery, gracious hosts.

    Alan2017-09-24T00:00:00Z
  • the jail in Firehouse is even larger when you get there than it looks in the picture.. Very comfortable. Richard and Charlene were wonderful host and thought of every detail. we would definitely come again if we are ever in this area. The bed was comfortable and we slept well, except that it was a little bit bright in there from the street lights. I always use a sleep mask anyway but I would recommend that because there's no way to make the room very dark. the little Courtyard out back is just lovely.

    Rebecca2016-09-01T00:00:00Z
  • Richard and Charlene were excellent hosts, we were made to feel very comfortable. The suite was a historic treasure nestled into a quaint town right off of the Mississippi river. I cannot recommend this location enough!

    Jillian2016-02-14T00:00:00Z
  • What wonderful hosts, what a great place to stay, in this terrific little town. We were welcomed the minute we arrived and felt right at home. The Palucci's were more than generous with the amenities and hospitality.

    Nancy2016-05-23T00:00:00Z
  • Richard and Charlene were great hosts; we were met at the door and made to feel very comfortable. A historic venue in a quaint little town right off of the Mississippi river. Once we settled in, we walked around the corner to a bar and had really good pizza and beer while watching Richard jamming on his saxophone with a band. It was a great experience and you can tell they have put a lot of time into thinking through all the possible needs a guest may have. There was quite a bit of snacks and breakfast type foods; beyond what we expected. It was overall a great experience.

Great little spot right on the river. Fish from the bank, rent a boat just down the road or just sit on the deck (my favorite). Governor Dodge State park with breathtaking views 5 minutes away. Small Wisconsin town with BIG relaxation.
    Right on the Mississippi River
  • It is a quite place with river views. Peaceful. Great tv as well. Mary answered any question we had promptly.

    Leo2017-08-27T00:00:00Z
  • House is as pictured and described. Well equipped and clean. Quiet location right on the river to watch the eagles and other birds from the deck or living room. Mary was great to work with and helped with recommendations for local places to eat. We enjoyed a fire in the stone fireplace in the evening.

    Donald2017-11-05T00:00:00Z
  • We enjoyed our stay. We loved both the open and enclosed deck that looked over the river. There were six of us and we all slept comfortably. Very homey and Mary communicated with us if we had any questions. We would definitely stay there again.

  • This is a gorgeous place on the Mississippi and such a beautiful house on the river. We had such a great stay while we were here. Mary was right when she recommended the Friday night fish fry at the local restaurant. It was delicious and very in-expensive! We would for sure come back! Thank you so much Mary! Beautiful place you have!

  • Beautiful sunset!

    Amy2017-09-04T00:00:00Z
  • We really enjoyed our stay at Mary's place. The highlight was definitely the huge deck with a gorgeous view over the river. The house is spacious, charming, well equipped, clean, very comfortable, with a nice bathroom and everything we needed in the kitchen. The weather was warm so we were mostly outside, but the living room was also a really nice space. We wish we could have stayed longer. Mary was a prompt and helpful communicator and the check-in/out was very easy. Thanks, Mary!

  • Wake up to look out the window to see deer browsing in the wildlife refuge behind the house. HUGE flatscreen to watch Netflix or the DVD library. 15 min drive to [free] Pike's Peak, where a walk along the ridge in full view of the Mississippi, better than Wayalusing, itself with scenic hiking trails. Prairie du Chien is the launch site for the fascinating docent-guided eco-tour of the river by the Mississippi Explorer pontoon boat (comfortable seating inside or outside).

This is our family home. It is a great family retreat with complete access to the river for all water sports including fishing and boating. Bring your boat or rent one just down the street. Huge screened porches and fully equipped house. Across from Municipal Airport.
Low river current and exceptional dock for boat. Lots of beds for large groups.
It's a river neighborhood. About 50% are full time residents. The remainder are people within an 1-2 hour drive who come on weekends.
  • Our group -- two families meeting to celebrate Thanksgiving -- had a great experience. We used the well-equipped kitchen to cook our Thanksgiving meal. Found plenty of space for four adults and eight kiddos under age 12 to both sleep and relax. We didn't explore the little town of Cassville, but took several walks to the nearby park where our kids enjoyed both the playground equipment and (even more so) the natural fun of the Mississippi River's rocks, sand, sticks, and shells. Even with the gray and chilly weather of late November, we had a great time both in and out of doors. (Though we would love to return in warmer months for the full river experience!) Check-in was smooth. The manual/operating instructions were both clear and sufficient. The owner was communicative and great to work with.

    Andrew2016-11-27T00:00:00Z
  • This is a beautiful place to just watch the world go by. The view of the Mississippi and rolling hills is stunning. The house is spacious, clean, and accommodating. You can tell the hosts love it here, and want others to love it as they do. It lacks nothing in comforts. The house is perfectly situated near Potosi (Best brew pub ever), the Gutenberg, Iowa (via a cool ferry ride), and Dubuque, IA.

  • A spacious, well cared for, clean house perfectly situated right on the river - we could not have hoped for a better spot for a family fishing trip with two young kids. All of us, the adults and the kids, had a great time. Highly recommended!

    Michael2017-07-19T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful people, wonderful place, wonderful neighbors. My grandparents lived in the town. It was great to have the memories brought back. Have to take the ferry over to "the promise land" winery in Iowa about 3 miles down the road. Fun bars and breakfast place

  • Our stay was arranged on short notice. Rebecca responded promptly and helped us feel everything was in order. The suite was especially clean, well decorated, and had lots of warmth and charm. If you are planning to tour sites in northeast Iowa, this is an excellent place to stay as your home base.

  • This is a cute apartment in a small town. The apartment is clean and spacious, and it is very close to the small town Main Street area. It was perfect for what we needed (we were in town for a wedding nearby). I also liked that it had a digital lock and private entrance. The only issue we had was that we didn't stock up on food (our mistake..) and lots of things were closed in the evening hours and on Sunday! Bring snacks! There is a fridge, coffee maker, and a stove/ oven, but no microwave. We had a great stay and the host was very sweet when she checked us in!

  • This is a great little place in a cute small town. We were in town for a wedding not far from the suite and we were able to check in late and get settled. The whole town was welcoming. Awesome bakery and pub in town. Would highly recommend for anyone looking for a cozy get away.

  • We loved staying at Dan's apartment: comfortable, homey, and perfect for walking and enjoying downtown McGregor as well as the river only a block away. Dan was an outstanding host; while we didn't meet in person, he was very responsive and provided great instructions and recommendations for where to eat/go/do while we were in town. • We had a great time at Dan's place. Right on the main drag of McGregor worked out great for the art fair and walking along the Mississippi. You can see Wyalusing State Park right from the kitchen window. A simple place with a bohemian feel. It more or less looks its age but was clean and homey.

  • Great location. Great price!!

    Chelsea2017-10-08T00:00:00Z
  • We've passed through McGregor on our many visits to the Mississippi & the Great River Road. We decided we wanted to experience the area a little more, so found this guest room on airbnb. We are not a couple who enjoys a traditional b & b experience, so when I read through Dan's property, I knew I found a more private 'motel' type room at a lower price. We took Dan's one bedroom --it was very cozy. The main room had the bed, a chair, and the TV. There was a small kitchen with refrigerator, table for 2, microwave, and toaster oven. The cupboard and drawers were set up with kitchen necessities. The bathroom was small but functional. I believe the pictures on the site display the guest room completely as it is. The Guestroom was located on the main street of town, so we were able to walk to all the stores and cafes. We enjoyed walking through so many when a lot of towns seem to be losing their main streets due to malls on the outskirts! I called Dan the day before we left and he was surprised I had not received the additional information I needed for our arrival date(I noticed it arrived at what would have been a half hour after our planned leave time-). Not a problem, he was very helpful so we knew just what to look for in finding his place. He met us when we arrived and left us with information on local places to eat. He also called us to let us know of an unexpected stop of the American Queen in case we wanted to go & view it up close. Great time --glad we decided to take more time in the area this year. I would recommend this to anyone traveling in the area. More than one night would make the kitchenette a valued asset.

  • I took the accomodation because I was there for work about 6 weeks there. I think that is long enough, to write a good review. There are 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom ready to get used. My bed was really comfortable and the bathroom was good too. The landlord tried to make our stay as comfortable as possible. He regulary asked us like “is everything ok” or “do you need anything” which was a very positive aspect, too. After 6 weeks there, I can not say any negative aspects. That are the reasons why I really enjoyed the stay. I can definitely recommend everybody, that gets near that way, to stay at Joshs house. Thank me later.

Quaint 2200 sq. ft. 5 bedroom family home within walking distance to historic river town Prairie du Chien and the Mississippi river. Explore and enjoy the majesty of the Mississippi Valley. Stroll thru historic downtown or hike down to the river on St. Feriole Island and discover the city's birthplace including Fort Crawford and the Villa Louis. This is a boater's and fisherman's paradise with several local boat launches and ample trailer and vehicle parking behind the house.
Our son, when he was in 3rd grade and prone to telling tall tales, told his teacher about this magical place we'd go, called 205town, where nobody lived but rather was a place that friends and family could gather to play. We told his teacher that in this case, that was pretty much the truth, and we invite you to stay at 205town and create your own magic with those close to you.
A quiet residential neighborhood a short walk away from parks, the Simply Coffee shop and a great Bloody Mary at Jim's Bar.

This home is conveniently located close to restaurants and a 20 minute walk to St feriole island and activities by the beautiful and majestic Mississippi River. The hosts have been very thoughtful in making this extremely clean home, very comfortable for families with kids complete with games ,puzzles ,toys and well stocked kitchen ,bedrooms and bathrooms. They were kind to offer us a welcome snack and beverages as well. Do not miss the spook caves campgrounds about 8-10 miles away from here and st feriole island. Ideal for a quick weekend trip for a family or friends reunion of 10-12 guests. Thank you Larry and Gloria. Our little kids are totally in love with your home. we definitely visit again someday.

  • The house was very spacious and clean, only one block from the historic downtown area, and a short walk to the Mississippi River. A perfect spot for a large crowd. Larry and Gloria were quick to respond and accommodating to our questions. Grab a cranberry white chocolate chip scone and coffee at Simply before heading to the Villa Louis for an incredible look at Victorian life. After a day on the river, treat yourself to a bloody mary at Jim's bar and some live music at The Tavern. It's also easy to dip into Iowa — we recommend following an overlook hike at Pike's Peak State Park with a quick round at Lady Luck Casino:)

Designed in 1951 by Frank Lloyd Wright and still owned by the original family, the Kinney House offers a rare opportunity to experience firsthand what it would be like to live in Wright’s Usonian non-rectilinear architecture. Wright believed the parallelogram plan, based on "diamond modules" with 60 & 120-degree angles, would create complex spaces that provide a sense of spaciousness within an affordable small footprint. Located in the small town of Lancaster WI, just 50 miles SW of Taliesin.
The house was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1951 for Patrick Kinney (a Lancaster, Wisconsin attorney), his wife Margaret, and their three children. Margaret had initially experienced Wright's architecture firsthand while working at Taliesin (just 40 miles from the house and a great day-trip) as an assistant to Wright's sister, and was inspired to commission Wright for their home. Construction was completed in 1953. The original plan consisted of a double hexagonal central core housing the living room, dining room, kitchen, master bedroom, and a bathroom. A linear wing housing two bedrooms and a second bathroom extended from the core. After completion, the arrival of a fourth child necessitated an addition for two more bedrooms and a bathroom. Taliesin Fellow John H. Howe, who had supervised the construction of the original house, designed the addition. Wright’s lifelong passion to create a “democratic” Usonian-style of architecture is exemplified in the Kinney House. Rising to the challenge of the $15,000 budget, Wright suggested a modest 1500 s.f. modular footprint and concrete block as the primary building material. In an effort to keep costs down and get the local Wisconsin limestone he loved, Patrick Kinney acted as the contractor and took on some of the labor himself - going so far as to dynamite, cut, load and deliver limestone to the site in his 1939 Chevy truck before work most mornings. Consequently, the Kinney house is often referred to as one of Wright’s few “owner built” homes. When most people think of modular homes they think 90-degree angles, but not Wright, whose genius is on display in the non-rectilinear layout. Wright believed the parallelogram plan - based on "diamond modules" and 60 and 120-degree angles - created interesting spaces that gave people a larger sense of rooms unfolding as they walked around the house. The “diamonds” extend beyond the plan to inform three-dimensional space: the ceiling, the lighting, and the furniture. Today, when I reflect on the house I remember school children calling it a “space ship,” and the people from all over the world who would simply stop by unannounced hoping to get a peak at Wright’s work. Typically, my parents would invite the strangers in and proudly show them around, often for hours at a time. Building this house was the most defining aspect of my parent’s lives.
The Kinney House is located in the City of Lancaster, in the southwest corner of Wisconsin. It is known as the "City of the Dome" for the beautiful Grant County Courthouse in the center of downtown. The charming historic shopping district features an array of boutiques, a variety of dining opportunities and a restored historic movie theatre. There are a variety of activities year round including an annual County Fair, Night on the Square, Music in the Park, Deal and Steals Days, parades and much more.
  • Neat opportunity to spend some time in a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed home. Beautiful secluded setting with great views. Also very accessible to the rest of town.

  • Katie is a wonderful host! She was able to accommodate my arrival time on my bicycle trip across the United States. Her lovely home was as described and the bed was super comfortable! She has quite the store you will have to check out when you are there as well! I definitely recommend staying with Katie when you are in McGregor!

  • I gave Katie almost no advance notice and she would have been justified in turning me away, but she was very gracious and welcoming. It's obvious that she leads a very active life and I appreciated her finding the time to make sure I was settled in before she rushed off to her next event. Katie's location was perfect for exploring an interesting part of the Mississippi river valley.

  • Katie's place was great. Her balcony is perfect to view and watch the town. So close to everything that's happening. Walked to dinner, saw and art exhibit, heard live music in the park. Great night.

  • We had a great experience at Katie's place. The apartment is lovely, the room is comfortable and the view over main street is fantastic. Katie is a very welcoming hostess, has recommendations on what to see in the area, and is very helpful with any questions you may have. Also, she keeps a great store downstairs. Check out the coffee :)

  • Katie's place is very convenient all of the shops in McGregor. Everything was as described. Katie has a business downstairs and stays very busy so we had a lot of privacy.

  • Katie was very nice and her apartment was very comfortable. The bedroom and queen bed worked out well. She is located right on the main street above her business.
