Our neighbourhood is blissfully quiet which we share with owls, wigeon, a heron and many other wildlife
  • I booked this apartment for my mum and she absolutely loved it and decided to stay for 8 days rather than the original 4! The apartment is set in a big stone barn converted from a hayloft (hence the name) and is tastefully furnished, comfortable and very relaxing. The grounds were amazing and the apartment comes with everything you need. Our host Penny was wonderful, never intrusive yet always available and we would like to thank her for her hospitality and all the fantastic eggs! We will definitely be staying here again whenever we are back in Plymouth, and without a doubt would recommend this apartment for anyone looking for a relaxing and luxurious retreat in the country.

  • We had an absolutely fantastic stay in the Hay Loft and while visiting the surrounding area. There is so much to do along the coast and on the moor, you have access to wonderful food in local pubs and Yealmpton farm shop; and to top it all off, the loft is extremely comfortable with everything that you could possibly need. Penny and her family are the perfect hosts, happy to share a local tip or pop in for any questions or issues. Thank you so much we will be back!

    Nicholas2017-04-13T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely clean and contemporary accommodation in a beautiful part of the country. Access to both the coast and Plymouth is excellent - you just have to get used to driving on Devon's narrow lanes!

  • We spent the Long Easter weekend in Penny's Hayloft and it was perfect! The Hayloft is in a barn adjacent to Penny's lovely farmhouse home down a quiet lane 5 ish mins from Yealmpton by car. Easy to find with the sat nav and a great location to explore South Hams from. The Hayloft is spacious, clean and has everything you need including white company products which is a lovely touch. There is a roll top bath and rainfall shower in the large ensuite, a very comfy bed, and a good size lounge area with tv, sofa, kitchen table and a kitchen with everything you need. Penny brings you fresh eggs straight from her chickens which are quite honestly the best eggs I've ever tasted! There's also a tennis court outside which we touch advantage of (there maybe a couple of balls in the hedge now Penny!) and a small courtyard area with a chiminea and candles which is perfect for enjoying a glass of wine in the evenings. From the Hayloft you are a 20 min car drive from Salcombe, Hope Cove and South Milton Sands which are beautiful and are worth a visit. We also did a great walk from the property down to Mothecombe beach, along the Coastal Path to Noss Mayo for lunch at the Ship and then circled back to the loft. Lots of lovely pubs to try and Penny provides a list in the Hayloft, we tried the Rose and Crown in Yealmpton and the Anchor in Ugborough - both delicious! If you're looking for a relaxing stay in the beautiful Devon countryside, stay here, it's fab. Thanks Penny & family! xx

  • Penny's beautifully converted hay loft was a pleasure to stay in. With all the amenities needed, Penny made sure that we were welcome and happy throughout the stay. The hay loft is a luxurious countryside get away, close to many beautiful beaches and coastal walks(mothcombe and noss mayo). Having a tennis court was also great fun. I will be sure to recommend to family and friends in the future!

    Charlotte2017-09-22T00:00:00Z
  • The Hayloft is beautiful and in a very tranquil setting. Well worth a visit.

    Caroline 2017-06-22T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely converted hayloft which has everything you'll need for your break. Mothecombe beach and the Erme Estuary are mins drive away (or a 45 min walk) and are both truly beautiful. Penny is the perfect host and always on hand should you need anything.

    Gareth2017-05-01T00:00:00Z
  • A fabulous, fabulous stay - perfect place to get away and just relax. Penny has made the property so relaxed and well-equipped to enjoy your stay there to its entirety! We'd read reviews on the eggs and they were delicious for breakfast. Thanks for such a beautiful escape.

  • Our room was spacious, comfortable, beautifully presented and included everything we needed. Kim & Nick were very welcoming, & helpful and full of local knowledge about the local area. They responded to our initial enquiry very quickly and gave excellent directions to the place which would otherwise have been quite difficult to find. We would definitely stay here again if we return to the area.

  • What a perfect stay with Kim and Nick. They were very welcoming and lovely hosts. We had nice chats with them and a very great time. The room was very spacious and nice furnished. All in all a perfect stay and we would highly recommend!

    Stefanie2016-07-03T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely room with comfy double bed and brilliant shower. Nick and Kim could not be nicer. Very sweet dogs too! Perfect if you are attending a wedding at Shilstone House.

    Ted2017-09-10T00:00:00Z
  • We were made very welcome from the start of the stay. Kim came out to meet us because the road was closed and it was difficult to find her. She then made a bacon sandwich for my husband! The perfect welcome. We attended a wedding nearby and Kim dropped us off at the venue and gave us taxi details for the return journey. The next day, the company over breakfast was great, from the adult talk about politics, to the chit chat from the pet budgy who was also on holiday there for a week! The room we had was spacious and comfortable with a floor to ceiling window looking out over the valley with an amazing view. The bathroom was a pleasant surprise with a modern shower and was very clean. Generally, the short stay was lovely in a tastefully decorated home and we will definitely be back when we next visit the area.

    Nicola2016-06-27T00:00:00Z
  • The location is lovely, and the room bright and clean, with everything I needed. Kim and Nick were great hosts. I enjoyed my stay. Thank you.

  • It' s a big chance to come in Philippa's B and B during one week. Perfect accomodation very clean and comfortable. Philippa is charming. The breakfast is complete. This studio is very good place to visit the amazing Devon's coast between Teignmouth and Loee in Cornwall, and also the Dartmoor.

Our coastal cottage is 100m from the beach, perfect for families and cosy romantic breaks. You’ll love it for the sea views, proximity to Burgh Island, cliff walks and the 13th C pub up the road. Lovingly refurbished with a log burner for winter and a sunny garden and conservatory. Two double bedrooms, one children's room with two beds. Well equipped kitchen with range cooker. Shower room. Travel cot/ high chair available. Wifi, TV with Netflix, USB charging points in every room.
An old coastguard's cottage, our cottage has been lovingly refurbished for bright modern living. There's plenty of character here with wooden floors throughout, green/blue coastal colours and a ship's beam spans the living room ceiling. In the winter the log burner is lovely and toasty; in summer the garden is a sun trap and a cosy conservatory shelters you from any sea breezes. We love cooking so the kitchen is well equipped for cooking and baking, and the dining area intimately lit for dinners around the farmhouse table. Kids have their own room complete with blackout blind and nightlight, and the loft bedroom has amazing views out to Burgh Island.
Located a stone's throw from the beach along the South West Coastal Path, there are plenty of cliff walks and beaches to enjoy. The area is great for surfing and kite surfing and the local beach is more secluded and far less crowded than most in South Devon. You'll be just a short walk around the bay from Bigbury on Sea and Burgh Island - famous for its art deco hotel once frequented by Noel Coward. Two fantastic 13th c pubs are close by and there are plenty of great restaurants and cafés. In the summer kids can go strawberry picking on a local organic farm while you can pick your own fresh veg. Agatha Christie fans will love the setting of two novels on the island opposite, and her house at Greenway is just an hour away. Salcombe, Modbury and Kingsbridge are all a 15 - 30 min drive away. Totnes, Dartmouth, Dartmoor national park are all within easy reach too and well worth a visit. Foodies will love tours of Sharpham Wine & Cheese and Plymouth Gin Distillery. There's also plenty for families to enjoy at Dartmoor and Paignton zoos, the South Devon Steam Railway, an Otter Sanctuary and Plymouth Aquarium.
  • We had a wonderful family vacation. Beautiful walks, sunny beaches, friendly neighbourhood, kids learned learned surfing, great host! THANK YOU!

  • This cottage was perfect for a 5 day holiday in Devon with my dog. Frances was an excellent host. She responded promptly to my queries and provided all the information needed prior to my arrival. We did some amazing coastal walks and had some great food at the local pub (Jorney's End). We will definetly be returning.

    Caroline 2017-05-22T00:00:00Z
  • Great cottage in a beautiful location

    Fiona 2017-08-26T00:00:00Z
  • Really lovely cosy little cottage. A hundred yards from the beach with plenty of good places to eat nearby.

    Ben2017-09-24T00:00:00Z
  • You will not want to leave. Frances' home is well equipped, neutral decor, very comfortable. It was relaxing to enjoy tea (or beverage of choice) on the patio overlooking the bay. Great location for long coastal hikes; or even a short stroll to the pub up the hill. Beach has good swimming. Neighbors are friendly. Independent kids will love the Challaborough area for exploring on their own, too.

    Aron2017-06-25T00:00:00Z
  • The house is small and beautiful, perfectly done up, super cosy, and has all the things one might need. There's no bath, but the shower is GREAT. A lovely place extremely close to the sea, to relax and get away from it all.

    Liz2017-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • Frances' place is a beautiful cottage in a great location. Challaborough beach is a lovely sandy beach in a sheltered cove perfect for paddling swimming and watersports. Great walks over the headland to nearby Bigbury beach and Burgh Island. There is a large caravan park nearby but it was not noisy and there is a lovely heated pool that members of the public can pay to use plus good amenities such as a playground and minimarket. Once there we did not need to use a car. The cottage itself is lovely with a sunny outside terrace and pretty seaside styling. It is well equipped with everything a family would need. Although there is no bath we managed well with a baby bath for our toddler. Frances was extremely helpful and the house was very clean. I would thoroughly recommend this property to others .

    Mary2017-07-16T00:00:00Z

Unique holiday home recently refurbished in the heart of the South Hams, South Devon. 1 mile to Newton Ferrers with 2 great foodie pubs and shops. Easy access to the beach and right on the doorstep of the South West coastal path. Dovecote House is a peaceful holiday retreat and forms the central section of the south-facing wing of an 19th-century listed stable. Two large bedrooms, new bathroom, spacious living room and use of shared south facing garden. Price includes a generous breakfast.
Dovecote House is set over the 1st and 2nd floors of a 19th century listed building which forms part of a picturesque hamlet of former workers cottages which previously served the stately home Membland Hall. Recently decorated and refurbished throughout to a high standard Dovecote House makes a great base for exploring South Devon. The spacious accommodation is suited to either a family or two couples. A generous complimentary breakfast is included, a honesty bar is available, along with free wifi and the most peaceful nights sleep you've ever had! As you approach The Dovecote though the mature South facing garden the internal stone staircase leads to the large, comfortable living/dining room with big comfy l-shaped sofa and large TV as well as the dinning area. This is a great space for relaxing or socialising. The snug but well-equipped kitchen provides everything you will need to rustle up even the most extravagant meal. Oven, electric hob, fridge with small freezer compartment and dishwasher. If you need to do laundry during your stay we can help out with that. The bathroom has just been completely refurbished and features a large over-bath shower, sink and toilet. Complimentary toiletries included. On the top floor of the house there are two very generous bedrooms. Both feature either 2 large single beds, or both can be zipped together to create a 'proper' super king sized bed in each room. If zipped together a mattress protector is added so don't worry, you won't feel the join. Beds and mattresses are new and super comfy. Feather duvets and pillows are provided along with crisp white linen for all beds. The front rooms of the house look over the mature, pretty garden, and the view from the rooms at the rear is of the cobbled stable yard. We provide a generous complimentary continental breakfast for all of guests for each morning you are staying which includes fresh bread, cereals, milk, juice, butter, conserves and fresh eggs from our chickens. To make your arrival a little easier we provide a honesty bar to get you started, stocked with all the essentials you might need including gin and tonic, wine, snacks and soft drinks. There are also 4 adult bikes for you to use throughout your stay to explore the surrounding area, free of charge. All linen for guests will be provided as well as big fluffy towels. Off street parking available for up to two cars. Please be aware we are in a rural location and there is no/very limited mobile signal in the house. You can pick up mobile reception at the end of the road. There is a landline available if needed. There is WIFI in the house, so WIFI Calling can be used.
The Dovecote sits in the middle of the pretty hamlet of Membland which is in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, half a mile from the Yealm estuary and just one mile from the idyllic water-side villages of Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo where you'll find three excellent pubs, Coop grocery store, butchers and post office as well as direct access to the water - great for sailing, paddle boarding or just splashing around. One of the most beautiful stretches of the South Devon Coastal Footpath, managed by the National Trust, is a 5-minute walk away, and the holiday house is close to unspoilt sandy beaches.
  • What a great place! Charlie and Dan were lovely hosts - we were made to feel extremely welcome - very friendly, generous with their time and really knowledgeable about the local area. The self contained apartment is gorgeous. Really spacious rooms, spotlessly clean and finished to a high spec, with a very comfy bed. The house is in a beautiful, peaceful location. We will definitely be back. A real treat!

    Ben2016-11-09T00:00:00Z
  • Very friendly and relaxed acquaintance with Charlie, Dan and Lola - young and enthusiastic hosts who gave us a great welcome and much consideration throughout the whole process. Kitchen, bathroom and bedrooms newly eqjuipped, immaculately clean and very comfortable. Oodles of hot water whenever wanted. Drinks from an honesty bar and an impressive array of entertainment media and hardware to play it, made nights in a pleasure. They even provided books! WiFi worked quickly and well but mobile signal, thankfully precluded constant to-ing and fro-ing with the outside world from the younger ones in our party. Silence only broken by the contented sounds of hens as they lay complimentary breakfast eggs in three different shell colours. Spoilt for choice. An ensuite or 2nd bathroom would make perfection even sweeter. Dovecote House is set in beautiful countryside, close to Noss Mayo and is a perfect location for exploring unspoilt areas of Devon. Thank you hosts, we would definitely visit again. John, Fi, Will and Ellie 18-20/09/2017.

  • My family and I had a really wonderful stay at Charlie and Dan's place. It's been very carefully furnished and decorated and is both pleasing to look at and very comfortable, with lots of thoughtful little extras - the basket of essentials in the bathroom, the cool bag for picnics, the honesty bar, the really high quality towels, the excellent kitchen (URL HIDDEN) much attention to detail. The location is lovely, we used the bikes to whizz down to the village in a few minutes to buy supplies or visit the pubs with their lovely views over the river, and to hook up with the south west coast path for walks. It's incredibly peaceful and we were thrilled to hear the local owl hunting - which didn't stop us sleeping beautifully. Dan was very welcoming and knowledgeable about the local area. I would recommend The Dovecote very highly indeed, it's such a charming place to escape to.

    Catherine2017-08-25T00:00:00Z
  • We were really impressed with Charlie and Dan's hospitality and aside from the house itself being very attractive the added touches such as fresh flowers, breakfast, milk and butter in the fridge were very generous and welcoming. The rooms were newly decorated and very comfortable and attractive. We would highly recommend a stay here.

    Fran2016-10-27T00:00:00Z
  • Dovecote house is unique! Nice touches in every space of the houses! The breakfast was fab! The eggs delicious! We had a lovely stay for 3 days! Everythin was clean and tidy. Dan was a super host! Highly recomended. Thank you!

    Andrea2017-07-06T00:00:00Z
  • Charlie and Dan's place is a little slice of heaven! Beaches all in very close range and the history of the area is utterly fascinating. But our hosts really made this stay above and beyond the usual. Every detail taken care of…. like staying in an elegant boutique hotel. Dan really takes the time to find out what you need to maximise your trip to the max. We didn't even quite have 24 hours but boy did we pack it all in with snoozes on the beach, cycle ride down to The Ship and a wonderful coastal walk the next day ending up back at the irresistible Ship for lunch. Thank you so much for letting us stay in your lovely home. Caz

    Caz2017-08-22T00:00:00Z
  • Charlie and Dan are the perfect hosts at Membland. Dovecote house is an amazing house with a beautiful garden in an historical setting of outstanding prestige. The interior is decorated with a sense of detail rarely seen. Charlie and Dan make sure you feel at home with a welcome basket , filled with lots of local goodies. The nature and Devon countryside are beautiful and from Membland we had the perfect HQ to visit most of Devon and even a part of Cornwall. We hope to be back !

  • A truly lovely place to stay. It was very clean, had everything that we needed and looked beautiful too. It's in perfect distance of Noss Mayo, which is stunning. Their garde, along with the chicken and Lola the Lab,was loved by our young son. Both Dan and Charlie were great hosts and couldn't offer enough help or recommendations. We really enjoyed and will definitely return!

Lovely, spacious double room in a 1930s house on the edge of Dartmoor with your own parking space on our driveway. The Dining room is set up with everything you need for tea & coffee anytime and a "help yourself" Breakfast. Sparkling clean retro bathroom with an excellent shower and separate toilet. We love where we live, on the edge of the moor, a short drive to the beaches of South Devon and easy access to Exeter and Plymouth. Fantastic for climbing, walking or just a short break away!
We are in the process of renovating the house, keeping many of the period features. We have recently installed full central heating, re-wired throughout and re-furbished the bedrooms and kitchen. All the rooms have been finished to good clean and working order although you will notice from the photos some of the "retro" areas that have yet to be updated. We hope that you will appreciate the 70's & 80's décor in some of the house that we have chosen to embrace! Please rest assured that no work will be going on in the house while you are staying with us.
If you’re looking for something a little more laid back and off the beaten track then the town of Ivybridge gives you a great alternative to the usual seaside holiday destinations. Surrounded by beautiful countryside and moorland, Ivybridge has a magnificent natural setting and a rich heritage of traditional South Devon industries. The town’s name comes from the bridge over the fast flowing River Erme, which powered Ivybridge’s mills. As a gateway to Dartmoor National Park, there are plenty of trails leading you out of Ivybridge and into the surrounding countryside. Once you’ve had enough of exploring, the town centre has some characterful pubs to relax in, and small independent retailers selling quality local produce and arts and crafts. Ivybridge is the starting (or finishing) point of the Two Moors Way - a long distance walking route to Lynmouth on the North Coast of Exmoor.
  • Emma and Ana were great hosts. We enjoyed our one night there. The place was clean tiny. Breakfast was great and had a selection of fruits as well!

    Jenny2017-09-21T00:00:00Z
  • Emma has detailed knowledge of places to visit and is really helpful in this respect. Near the Moor and a stones throw from some gems of beaches. (20 minutes or so by car.)

    neville2017-09-15T00:00:00Z
  • Very cosy and clean room with great breakfast facilities (and a cracking biscuit tin!)... very close to beautiful Dartmoor walks, Emma was a helpful host

    Hannah2017-09-17T00:00:00Z
  • Emma and Ana were warm, welcoming and friendly. The room was just as lovely as the picture suggests and was warm and comfortable - I slept very well indeed. Breakfast was provided but I didn't stay for this as I had other plans. I would definitely recommend staying here.

We are offering to share the tranquillity of our fifteenth century thatched farmhouse. It is 10 minutes walk from Mothecombe beach, the South West Coastal footpath and the Erme estuary. The house is set in a tiny hamlet which is a haven for wildlife and is very peaceful. Woodpeckers, tits, nuthatches and wrens visit every day. There is a local shop in the village two and a half miles away. There is no public transport from the hamlet. There are excellent local pubs that serve good food.
We have two double bedrooms available one is next door to the bathroom and the other is a couple of paces away. If we have a booking we would not take a further booking from a different family. This would mean that both rooms could be at the disposal of one group. The price includes a much praised tasty breakfast using local and organic ingredients where possible. There are tea and coffee making facilities and guests are welcome to use the family kitchen to make themselves a meal or a snack. Guests are also free to use the sitting and dining room as well as the large garden which has a dining table and chairs on the patio. There are no street lights and so the view of the stars can be breathtaking. The beach is within easy walking distance up a steep hill but there is also a car park next to the beach path for those who like to save their legs.
It is a tiny hamlet in the South Hams in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The estuary is sandy, as is the local beach, and is home to a variety of seabirds. Barn owls and bats fly past the house at night as they hunt for food. For human beings there is a good selection of local pubs at which to eat.
  • If you are walking the SWCP (but also of course if you want to stay in the area for some other reason) this is the place to choose. It's not far from the path and Sandi is a brilliant cook. On top of that the historical house is interesting to be in as well.

  • A lovely stay in a beautiful part of the world! Sandi was an excellent host- we were fed excellent breakfasts and welcomed into her cosy home like old friends. Great recommendations including walks and the Riverford restaurant (a must if you're in the area)! Highly recommended

  • From the moment I drove in to the house I knew I had struck a little piece of gold... staying at the cottage was idyllic, quiet, super comfy, and Sandi one of the nicest, kindest hosts I have met. Not only was the stay fantastic but she packed me off with a couple of her yummy homemade chocolate biscuits for my long journey. I cannot recommend this more highly a wonderful experience and great also to swap stories over breakfast. :)

We built this room to enjoy the view. And now you can too. From inside or out on the balcony you look down the Yealm estuary towards the sunset. It is just a studio, but rest assured, it is like no other. PS, Yes we had called it the Garden Room b4
Welcome to our room with a view. We built this room in 2015 to take full advantage of the view down the estuary of the River Yealm towards the sun setting in the West. If your idea of getting way involves a bit of fun, a splash of adventure and more than a hint of luxury then we think you may well be happy here. It is a simple 1 room studio with a wall of glass which folds back so you can step straight onto the deck overlooking the water or to the covered terrace at the side. When it is warm you can really open up the space to the outside. There is electric heating for when its colder. It has a wet room shower, basin and WC. But be warned you have to step out on the terrace to access it, so bring a dressing gown. Being a studio there isn't a full kitchen, just a kettle, coffee maker and a microwave. And you will have to step out again to do your washing up in the Belfast sink on the terrace. All this is in our lower garden between the lane and the estuary. We are one of the last houses in the village before the lane heads off through the woods to the sea, joining up with the South West Coastal Path. Keen walkers will not be disappointed. Gourmands may well want to wander back the other way into the village to dine at the renowned Ship Inn. Or you can come and join us, we run the Noss Mayo Tea Gardens on our upper terrace on summer weekends. Inside you will find plenty of soft furnishings made by Kathryn and some of Kathryn and Andy's driftwood art. We hope you find Noss Mayo as creative and inspiring a place as we do. Because it has been so carefully created we do ask for a cleaning fee, to help keep it that way. Dogs are welcome, but try and keep them off the cushions….. we do ask a higher cleaning charge for those of you bringing dogs, please read all about in the house rules section. Thanks.
Noss Mayo is quite a spot, a narrow estuary village, about as beautiful as any piece of England, make sure you spend 1 evening just sitting on the terrace as the sun goes down. You will go away with memories (and sand in the car footwells).
  • My girlfriend and I absolutely loved our stay in Noss Mayo. Although we did not get to meet our host Kathryn, she had set everything out for our 2 night stay and provided good advice on how to get to the location (which otherwise may have been hard to find) The room itself was lovely and as the photos show, is in a lovely location. My only note may be that there is no internet in the room and there is no phone signal anywhere close. This was not an issue for us but may be an issue for others

    Joshua2016-04-08T00:00:00Z
  • Had a lovely time at the garden room, fantastic views of the river and town and good walks close by. Would come again :)

  • River Room is a beautiful and unique place to stay. Right on the edge of the riverside, there are few properties in this lovely location that can share such a wonderful view. Private, quiet and self contained. Kathryn and Andy made us feel welcome and at home straight away. A great couple and great to chat with but they did not intrude on our privacy at any time. Kathryn has also completely kitted out the property with stylish and useful things, lots of beach style things and quality bedding etc etc. We had great weather while we we here and so used the deckchairs in the garden to relax after our long walk of this spectacular section of the costal path. There is a dining table and all that was needed to enjoy a summer meal outside but there are also two great pubs close by so we only ate breakfast here and ate out for lunch and dinner. A superb little place, absolutely lovely.

  • Kathryn was a great host, communication was very clear, which was great for when we lost phone signal on the way down & needed directions, everything was written down in advance in preparation. Great suggestions on the local places to eat & recommended us on beautiful walks across mothercombe beach, creating the perfect little holiday itinerary for us, without much planning prior! The accommodation is so peaceful, the perfect place to unwind from busy life, listening to the sound of the river at night, complete relaxation! Beautiful little village, lots of walks for the dog without travelling to far! A great place to spend our 1st wedding anniversary! :)

    Lisa2017-07-16T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing retreat by the river. Kathryn has created a gorgeous place with lots of unique touches. We loved enjoying the evening sun in the deckchairs, and waking up to that view!

    Louise2017-05-27T00:00:00Z
  • I cannot think where to start... From before the little getaway, we were off to a great start with Kathryn keeping us informed about where to park, instructions and general hints and tips. Much more than you could expect already. Unfortunately Kathryn and Andy were away during our stay but we were left in the very capable hands of Jane. Kathryn left us with all contact details and arranged for Jane to greet us on arrival which was lovely and very much appreciated. As were the goodies left in the fridge for us!!! We settled in very easily and were amazed at the amount of bits and bobs around the room. Stuff you wouldn't expect but wouldn't want to be without such as binoculars, outside blankets and hot water bottles for example. We used or first night to make the walk to the local shop. Well worth the trek (it's very hilly and looks worse than it is) and a good way to see what the area has to offer. We dined at the Ship Inn every night despite only planning to be there the one night because it was just so good :-) the staff look after you well & it's the best pub food we have ever had. The next day we explored Salcombe in the rain but was still lovely. It was about an hour away, although a lot of that was time finding parking...! The next day, we stayed closer to home and made the hike to Cellars Beach which was beautiful (but involves a lot of steep steps be warned!!) it felt like a private beach & was well worth the steps. Overall the holiday has been incredible and we can't wait to come back. Already had lots of friends and family ask for more details from the photos which barely do the River Room & Noss Mayo justice. Thank you Kathryn, Andy & Jane; look forward to seeing you soon. Claudia & Jack

  • We couldn’t have asked for a better nights’ accommodation in a stunning house with a lovely room. Kim and Nick were so accommodating and their house is lovely. The bedroom was so spacious with a lovely bathroom and an incredible view out of the window, we only wish we could have stayed longer. We will definitely book there if we are back in the area. They went out of their way to welcome us and it was a real pleasure to meet them both. I will definitely be recommending them to friends who need somewhere to stay. The beach is 10 minutes away and they can offer lots of ideas for what to do in the area.. THANK YOU!

  • We have a great two-night stay with Kim and Nick in their lovely spacious home. They were friendly, warm and welcoming to us. Our room was clean, light, spacious and the en-suite bathroom was lovely too. We enjoyed breakfast at the long table in the kitchen with Kim (and Nick on the second morning) - plenty of tea/coffee, cereal and toast - and we accepted Kim's offer a scrummy bacon butty! Kim was on hand for advice and ideas about local eateries, and places to see. We really enjoyed our time with Kim and Nick - and would recommend their home to any airbnb travellers.

We found our room to clean, quiet, comfortable and spacious. The en suite the same. The house is surrounded by glorious scenery and although down a drive approx half a mile) was easily accessible and a very short journey into Modbury ( nearest town) and lovely beaches. Thoroughly recommend a visit!

  • Kim and Nick are wonderful, charming hosts. They have lived in picturesque South Hams, Devon for over 10 years and have a great knowledge to share. Their home, Heathfield Down is pretty isolated down some tight lanes but wonderfully situated and appointed. We truly loved our stay and have every intention of going back !

  • Although on a housing estate the apartment is a fantastic base for exploring South Devon and Dartmoor. We had wonderful days out (beware some of the roads - particularly on the way to Kingston using satnav are horrifically narrow). The apartment itself is superbly equipped, modern and clean and ideal for two people (and our mutt).

  • Gillie and Nick are amazing hosts. On the day of arrival we were hosted by Mr.Nick.We arrived a bit late (11pm), but for Nick it was not problem at all. What to say? House is great architectural design (glass and steel) with a lots of open space. Our room with bathroom was beautiful, clean as all house in general. The bed was ultra comfortable (cushty), with amazing view over the atrium and long continuous view to the river side. It was a massive pleasure to wake up in the morning and be served by Mr.Nick and his amazing cup of coffee and French croissant. On Sunday, we had a pleasure to meet Mrs. Gillie that give us charming welcome to her home. We were impressed with everything and we had amazing weekend. Definitely, next time we will book this place again and we highly recommend to everyone.

  • Gillie and Nick's home is beautifully situated. We enjoyed some quiet moments just looking down at the estuary from our bedroom and from our dining table at breakfast and also loved the walks that were on our doorstep. Nor did we have far to go to enjoy delicious evening meals at The Ship Inn. Gillie and Nick have a beautiful home - the modern decor appealed to us very much. They were excellent hosts - welcoming without being intrusive. It was a pleasure to meet them and we hope to visit both them and beautiful Noss Mayo again before too long.

Studio apartment with own lockable entrance, double bed and bathroom with shower. Sofa, table and chairs with tea and coffee making facilities and wifi. There is no tv in the studio but there is one in the main house.
The studio is situated alongside the main house, it is a big room, has a double bed a mattress topper and quality pillows and duvet. There is plenty of light from the door length windows and a key to lock the external door. It is very private and set in a lovely rural setting with beautiful views, walks and cycles.
The neighbourhood is quiet and rural. There are plenty of nice walks through woods, fields and around the estuary. There are cycle tracks and villages to explore, a new cycle track links us with neighbouring villages, making it very safe to cycle. The estuary and local woods, 10 minute walk away, has many birds to sit and watch. The local village is a 15 minute walk, it has a pub, restaurant and fish and chip shop. There is also a post office and small convenience store. A morrisons supermarket is 3 miles away. Plymouth is on the main railway line to London Paddington. There are buses from the village to Plymouth, which has the historic Barbican and Hoe, a new indoor shopping centre and aquarium. Buses also run through the village further into the South Hams towards kingsbridge and Salcombe.
  • Jill and Tony were lovely hosts, extremely welcoming and helpful, and I had I had a great week in their spacious studio room. The location is really quiet, down a no-through road, with walks down to the estuary and in the surrounding countryside. Access to Plymouth, local beaches and the major routes was very good. Highly recommended!

  • We had a nice stay with Jill and hubby both lovely, warm and homely people. We liked the studio apartment, it gave us privacy as it is separate from the main family home We loved the setting and the feeling of a barn conversion. It was clean and spacious. Cheers Julie and Sanjiv

    Julie2016-04-29T00:00:00Z
  • We had an excellent night at Jill's and were made feel very welcome. We stayed in a spare room in the main barn house which was cosy and very comfortable. Perfect for a stop over on our cycle trip and the pub in the village was excellent for a hearty meal.

    Andy & Fee2016-05-02T00:00:00Z
  • Jill was away the weekend we came to stay so I can't judge Jill as a host other than to say she was kind and flexible enough to accommodate us with a family memeber giving us access to the property. We really liked the setting of the studio in amongst a complex of old, converted farm buildings - though it's worth noting that the studio itself is a more modern unit which while comfortable and cosy is quite basic in its furnishings. It was fine for us and we would stay again - althought the addition of a small fridge would help in the summer months as we were sorting our own breakfasts.

    diana2017-08-13T00:00:00Z
  • Perfect start to our cycling holiday! The location is beautiful and very relaxing. We were made to feel very welcome by Jill and all the family. The local pub does delicious meals and is only a short walk away. It's a great place to stay!

  • If you want peace and quiet, surrounded by countryside, but easy access to Plymouth, Dartmoor and the coast this location is ideal. Very welcoming hosts. Large, private space though you need to go outside to access owners' kitchen and the bed and sofa were a bit soft for our taste but overall we were very happy with our stay and would have no reservations about returning.

We didn't cook there as we had family staying nearby, but could have done very easily. We did a lovely walk from Kingston along the coastal path to Wonwell getting there at low tide and with enough time for a swim too, highly recommend it (about 5.5miles). We took a trip to South Milton Sands, great beach and the seafood in the cafe is amazing. We were very lucky to have found such a great place to spend the week. Thank you!

  • Sometimes on airbnb you hit the jackpot, and for me Ringmore was just that. The cottage is beautiful, the village peaceful, the pub excellent, the local shop really good and the walk to the beach and the many possible coastal walks just made the time fly. Once you set off walking you just don't want to stop. There are maps in the cottage, and guides which are very helpful. We were sure we had somehow missed a day out! The worst thing about Anna's cottage is having to leave. I am longing to go back.

    Liz2016-06-10T00:00:00Z
  • We have just had a beautifully peaceful and restorative time at Anna's place (12 days at end of May). The house itself: the living room in particular is vibrantly colourful and cosy, with high ceilings and windows in all directions, so lovely light coming in during the evening. The bed and bedding are very comfortable, the bathroom and kitchen easy and a pleasure to use. The private garden is gorgeous and the various paths to the sea and the cliff path are delightful! We didn't encounter many people - perhaps the occasional group of walkers passing the house and a few people down at the beach. I had quite a lot of queries and changes to make and Anna has been very quickly responsive and helpful. We have already booked again!

    Clare2017-05-26T00:00:00Z
  • A thoroughly enjoyable short break in Anna's beautiful home, with its floor to ceiling literature, beautiful gardens, off-road parking and amenities to cover all of our travelling needs. Anna was extremely responsive to all requests, especially given the lateness of the booking and made sure everything was organised for our arrival. If you are looking for somewhere extra special to chill out (there's little mobile coverage and no internet, or TV) and explore the beautiful backwaters and beaches of South Devon, it's hard to imagine anywhere more idyllic. The property is tucked away down a small lane, in the centre of this quaint, picturesque village with it's great pub and easy access to the nearest beach - around 0.5 miles walk away. We took food, as there's no shop in the village, although the local supermarket in St Ann's Chapel we found to be well stocked for most needs. Wonwell Beach, the coastal path and Oyster Shack all well worth a visit. Thanks again Anna. Hope to be back sometime soon. Steve

  • We had no problem finding the barn without satnav! It was an idealic setting with no light/noise pollution. Claire and her family (and dogs) were very friendly and couldn't have done more to make us feel welcome. The barn itself was fantastic and definitely had the wow factor. Everything we needed was there to make it our best stay ever. For us, the tennis court was a huge bonus. We would highly recommend a stay at this barn.

Modern contemporary house in a beautiful location. Great walks, cliffs, woodland or beside the river. Both rooms have en-suite wet rooms. Breakfast is continental. The villages of Newton and Noss have three pubs, a tea room, post office and a shop.
  • Probably the most beautiful house we have ever had the pleasure to stay in. As soon as we arrived Gillie and Nick made us feel completely welcome, and on seeing the view from our bedroom I already started feeling sad that we couldn't stay forever. The position of the house looking out over the estuary to Noss Mayo is incredible, and perfect for spending hours watching the tide come in and out and the array of activity on the water. The room was lovely and Gillie and Nick's generous hospitality was wonderful. Thank you so much for a wonderful stay!

    Lucy2016-06-01T00:00:00Z
  • Thank you Gillie and family for a warm welcome and lovely stay in your stunning house! We really enjoyed hearing about life in Newton Ferrer and really felt at home, and well rested and fed for the following days walk ( thank you for the lift too). Would highly recommend your place. Thanks again. Jienchi and Safia

    Jienchi2016-04-01T00:00:00Z
  • The little village of Newton Ferrers is a bit of a hidden gem and we enjoyed our time there very much. The house is beautiful and the hosts were very friendly and welcoming.

    Rachel2016-08-12T00:00:00Z
  • I could not have picked a better place to stay! What a beautiful home and fabulous hosts. We were made to feel so at home and couldn't have wished for anything more! I wish we could have stayed here longer. Thank you Gillie!

    Naomi2016-06-13T00:00:00Z
  • Gillie and her husband were the best hosts we could have hoped for, going above and beyond to cater and accommodate - to the point that we felt part of the family! The place is stunning, and I can't talk enough about the cleanliness, the attention to detail and the overall superb experience that we've had. We are already missing our hosts and the two fantastic villages of Noss Mayo and Newton Ferrers. A dream trip!

    Andreas2017-08-07T00:00:00Z
  • The area is gorgeous, the accommodation is outstanding with the most amazing views. Gillie & Nick are fantastic hosts who made us feel so welcome, they were warm, open and very helpful. We had a fantastic holiday and would highly recommend this wonderful place.

    Linda2017-07-15T00:00:00Z
  • I only say better than expected because this is my first airbnb and they could not have been more wonderful hosts. If every experience was like this, I would never stay anywhere else. The house is amazing too and the views are out of this world. I could happily have stayed in my room looking at the view all day.

    joanna2017-07-31T00:00:00Z
  • We had the most wonderful two days in Gillie and Nick's home. Newton Ferrers is a little hidden gem and the view from their house is priceless. We woke up early just to admire the view in the morning light. They were both the most wonderful hosts and we can't wait to hopefully go back one day!

'Thorn House & Garden' also offers a wonderful venue for corporate events including weddings, garden parties, etc. The garden is open to the public by appointment and can be guided by the enthusiastic current owner, Eva, in English or German.
  • THorn House is special. THe river bank location, period house and beautiful 10 acre garden make it a joy to settle in for a few days for an extremely peaceful break. OUr double bedroom was very spacious and had a comfortable sofa from which to relax and enjoy the garden view. Adjoining bathroom was spotlessly clean. GUests need not worry about feeling the cold or having limited hot water in this period property as there is a wood chip boiler in the grounds. the supply of wood is limitless, from felled garden trees. Eva is a wonderful host. SHe was very attentive to our needs and ready with local information and cooked fantastic breakfasts. Home baked bread, fresh fruit salads and a delicious take on eggs benedict and a spicy chorizo alternative. EVa is passionate about the garden. ANyone interested in flowers and trees, river views and garden design would love to spend a few days at THorn House. We certainly did.

  • A very picturesque location and a lovely old building. Good breakfast, a friendly host and an embarrassment saving act of generosity from the son to get us to a wedding on time!

    Matt2017-08-06T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay at Eva's lovely home was fantastic. Set in a truly picturesque part of South Devon, with views across the estuary, it's an ideal hide away for a couple to escape too. We stopped for 3 nights and spent time in the large and beautifully designed garden, lazy mornings in the sunlight of the orangery as well as visiting local sea food restaurants and charming harbour side pubs - Eva has all the great recommendations. We will most certainly visit again - it's a hidden gem and somewhere that Eva makes very welcoming.

    Jack2016-08-02T00:00:00Z
  • A warm welcome to a beautiful house in a sublime setting. This was our first airbnb experience and we couldn't have wished for more. We will be recommending a stay at Thorn to family and friends. Many thanks again.

  • Fantastic location with amazing views. The house is beautiful with very spacious rooms, comfortable beds and everything you need. Eva is a lovely host and made us feel welcome and breakfast was delicious in the orangery. Would very happily stay again. Wembury village is within walking distance, which is very nice, but if you want to explore the area more generally then definitely rent a car.

  • Amazing house and gardens, like taking a step back in time. Wish it was our house.

    Paul2017-06-24T00:00:00Z
  • My friend and I had a WONDERFUL time at Thorn. Ours was a spontaneous visit (the best kind!) and Eva was an exceptional host. The twin beds were comfortable and we both slept very well in a peaceful and quiet room. Thorn is a beautiful house and Eva's sumptuous breakfast of home made bread, marmalade and scrambled eggs in the Orangerie was a real treat. The views are spectacular and Eva's garden is really something to behold. We were able to explore and walk from the house round to Wembury beach and back (5 miles) and had a delicious supper at The Ship in Nossmayo over the water - thanks to her astute recommendation. Our welcome was warm and friendly and our stay too short. We shall return. Thank you Eva.

  • We had a fabulous stay at Thorn house. Beautiful setting, beautiful house comfy and very spacious, exquisite gardens. Would highly recommend if you are in the area. Eva was a great host, very friendly and accommodating, helped us with taxi numbers. The breakfast was very good and varied each day, the rest of the time we were left to our own devices. which was pretty much exactly what we wanted! Thank you.

Our annex is part of this stunning barn conversion and is located less than 5 miles south of the A38, central to Plymouth, Exeter, Dartmoor and nearby resorts. Ideally situated for business and holiday guests who are looking for peace and quiet in a rural setting, enjoy walking and exploring the many beaches and villages dotted around South Hams. If you are looking for a lovely break in Devon, you have found the perfect location.
The Annex is equipped to a very high specification. One of the many feedbacks we receive is how comfortable the beds are and how lovely the bedding feels. The kitchen has everything you will need. Two ovens, grill, microwave and white goods that is completed to a high contemporary specification and with additional family area. The wooden staircase leads down to two double bedrooms and a family bathroom. Access can be gained to the decking space and south facing garden. Guests can enjoy off street parking with private access to the accommodation all in one level. Not ideal for 2Xlarge vehicles i.e. camper vans.
We are in a local rural community, with 8 houses consisting of farm houses and barn conversions. The surrounding fields are working fields mainly for cattle and horses, so you will see farming traffic going about their daily business. The local farm, 3 minutes walk from The Linhay provides eggs from an honesty box for £1, you can see the 'Ludbrook Ladies' in the nearby farm completely free range, living the dream. The nearest villages are Ugborough with two local pubs/restaurants (30min. country walk) and Modbury with a range of eateries, take-aways and local shops. If we are available and with prior arrangement we are happy to provide transport into the local village if you would like to go for a drink/meal without the worry of driving.

  • Catherine and John were fantastic hosts and the photos really don't do their place justice. I came for a weekend away from London with two friends and will definitely return. John was full of info on local walks and pub recommendations, even giving us a lift to the local on Friday evening. The space is immaculate and, although there's not much in terms of shops/pubs in walking distance, you're surrounded by great scenery and fantastic beaches. I wholeheartedly recommend a visit!

    Simon2016-10-30T00:00:00Z
  • The accommodation is quite simply superb and includes fixtures and fittings far higher than one would normally get in a holiday rental apartment. It was very clean and provided all of the home comforts for a family, including dish washer, micro wave, double oven etc. The area has outstanding natural beauty and excellent beaches to explore. The hosts John and Catherine could not have been more friendly, helpful and welcoming. I would throughly recommend this holiday apartment!

  • Stayed at The Linhay with 2 colleagues while working in the area and found it to be spacious and newly refurbished to a very high standard. John was helpful by providing directions and taking the time to run through everything on arrival, also checking that everything was as expected on check-out. Very good value, will hopefully be staying again.

    Chris2017-08-12T00:00:00Z
  • We were pleasantly surprised when we arrived as it was more luxurious than the photos suggested. It was like being in a 5 star hotel. We were staying over the Christmas period and so I was also delighted that it was tastefully decorated. Treats and essentials were provided and it was great to have a dishwasher and all the kitchen items we could possibly need. We would definitely stay again.

    Jane2016-12-26T00:00:00Z
  • If I could give John and Cathy's place 6 stars, I would! The accommodation is absolutely top-of-the-range. A recently renovated barn, it's spotlessly clean, modern, but also characterful, with a wonderful cathedral ceiling, and homely in feel. All mod cons are included such as under-floor heating, and very well-equipped kitchen. The location is idyllic too - in peaceful, rolling Devon countryside not far from the coast. John and Cathy were excellent, welcoming hosts, and baked us a delicious lemon drizzle cake, which was very welcome after a long flight and journey. John even offered to drive us to the local pub so we could have a drink : ) Would love to go back! Highly recommended.

  • This is a lovely house with a large kitchen dining room downstairs opening to a small garden, and a big sitting room upstairs, which opens onto an roof terrace. Everything was spotless. Thoughtful hosts eg light breakfast left in fridge for first day. Friendly cat very easy to look after. The house is in an ideal position very close to centre but just far enough that pub noise is not annoying. Characterful small town with 3 pubs and several restaurants.

Our Georgian house lies conveniently close to Modbury's amenities, whilst being only a short distance from South Hams most beautiful beaches and the tranquility of Dartmoor. It's a family home that sleeps 6, which you are welcome to enjoy both inside and in the garden (which is a great sun trap).
The house has great character and a welcoming feel. Downstairs the spaces are large and light due to the large windows and south facing aspect of the house. The bedrooms are all double rooms and there is a large bathroom and a newly done out en-suite to the master bedroom.
Modbury has a number of great pubs, with plenty of food options, as well as nice walks, the Barrow market (Saturday mornings), coffee shops, convenience stores and a sports recreation ground.
  • We had a fantastic time staying at Martha's house in Modbury. The Georgian house is a great size in a fantastic location with a beautiful garden. We were particularly impressed by how thoughtfully the house was prepared for our young children: including a fantastic selection of age appropriate toys and books. It was the perfect base for a beach holiday and we really enjoyed exploring the stunning coastline that was within easy reach of the house. The meet and greet was all smoothly arranged. We didn't feel like there was anything 'lacking' in terms of essentials and helpful extras for our stay. Thank you!

    Hannah2016-08-13T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful time at Martha's lovely home. It was perfect for us as we were looking for somewhere specifically in Modbury (to spend time with family there). The house has a lovely open airy feel, and it's an easy house to live in - plenty of space, the garden, great kitchen and dining area, space for children to play etc. We immediately felt relaxed and at home. Modbury is a sweet little town and well located for beaches and many other things to do in the beautiful South Hams.

    Jennie2016-08-21T00:00:00Z
  • AMAZING! We were really touched by the thought and care that Martha put in to making our stay such an enjoyable one. The house is huge and homely, immaculately presented and full of little touches which made our holiday so wonderful: fresh flowers in the dining room, shampoo and shower gel in the bathrooms, and especially the provision of facilities for our toddler - games, books and toys. The house has loads of character as the owners, Pete and Martha, have made it unique but also welcoming. Things we loved (in no particular order) include: - having large indoor and outdoor places for our daughter to play - lots of 90s and early noughties music to listen to - the Lego movie on DVD - the best shower we've ever used! - beautiful views - really close to the local shop - within 20min drive of incredible beaches - photos of the host and her family beaming down at us! - loads of helpful information on where to go and what to see - board storage - feeling so welcomed into someone else's home - lots of toys, teddies and booms for our daughter to enjoy - well-equipped kitchen and awesome cooker - loads of interesting to books to read It was our first time using AirB&B, and we have been really impressed and would recommend the service generally, but especially the house - AMAZING!

  • Beautiful, well equipped modern house very close to the beach. The local pub (the Journey's End in Ringmore) serves great food and is dog (and people) friendly! Fantastic location for exploring the South West Coast Path. The owner, Sandra, couldn't be more helpful. Loved the whole experience (our first airbnb booking)!

  • Lovely house, would recommend staying here and would definitely stay again if in the area! Thanks Sandra

  • We stayed at this house for four nights - four adults and two children and it was very comfortable. It is clean, spacious, and has a great variety of outside space (including the short walk to the beach). My only complaint is with regards to the view which is not mentioned on the site or shown with any realistic pictures. We all got over it relatively quickly but it was a surprise when we first arrived. The house is set back enough from the caravan site that it has no impact in terms of sound or foot traffic. It really is only the view that is the issue. Apart from that the house is great and I would recommend it especially if you know what to expect!

  • This was our second stay in this wonderful seaside home. Access to all the local facilities and beautiful coastal scenery was within walking distance. The home itself is well equipped, comfortable and clean. A great place for a group of family or friends to enjoy.

  • Sandra´s modern beach house (»Bauhaus Style«) was a perfect location for a short family trip (3 generations) to South Devon - even in January. For a German to drive there (and to find it) is kind of a challenge: not only the unusual left-hand traffic but especially the very small country roads with high hedges in both sides require a constant level of concentration. The amenities with the large fully equipped kitchen and the comfortable living room compensate for the difficult approach. Even in winter we enjoyed walking the beaches and our excursions to the surrounding area such as the lovely town of Dartmouth or the Dartmoor National Park.

    Petra2017-01-07T00:00:00Z
  • This is a great place with plenty of space, love the decor and the feel, super close to the beach with fab coastal walks, superb pub up the road x

  • Fantastic weekend and lovely house. Thank you Sandra

    Joe2017-03-06T00:00:00Z
  • Sandra was a great host, she sent us instructions prior to arrival! We were a party of 6, two families. The house is absolutely amazing. It is a new luxury 4 bedroom house very near to the beach. We had terrible weather yet we had a WONDERFUL time becuase the house is so warm and comfortable. We absolutely loved our two night stay in what is the "off-season." The house is incredibly close to the beach and the coastal path, it also overlooks a mobile home park which we got accustomed to! Thank you Sandra for sharing this INCREDIBLE house with us.

Fairwinds is a light and peaceful, beautifully renovated home to compliment its beach location. It has two fantastic outdoor living space with some of the best views of Burgh Island Beach positioned in Parker Road Bigbury on Sea, a 2 minute walk to the beach! A perfect base for couples, families or even those carrying surf/wind/body boards (plenty of room for storage) , and furry friends (pets).
The wonderful sandy beaches, fantastic walks and with stunning night sky make Bigbury on Sea one of the most sought after areas in the South Hams.
  • We took my 88 year old mum who is a wheelchair user. There is 2 steps up into the property which she managed. Once inside, it was brilliant. She loved the space and the views. The outside area was a real sun trap. There is everything that you need there. The beds were comfortable and mum had her own en suite. Will definitely go back

  • We just wanted to say thank you for a great stay at Fairwinds, we all really enjoyed it. Very relaxing and great for seaside walks and a chilled get together with friends. The standard of accommodation was lovely and it felt light, bright and spacious, with excellent facilities. It was all really clean and very comfortable, with everything included that you would need. Great location too with very easy access to both Bigbury beach; Burgh Island and Challaborough and the coast path too. We loved it and would definitely be back. Thank you.

  • We were so lucky to be able to book this fab property! Newly renovated, it is bright, spotlessly clean and homely, with a beach theme running throughout. It has a large, light, open plan living area with an up to the minute kitchen and every appliance you could need. The bedrooms are a good size and the beds very comfortable - we slept like logs - and the outside terraces afforded us different views over Burgh Island and the beach. Linda and Eamonn are great hosts, communicated with us very well and made everything very easy. I have no doubt we will be back. Thank you for a perfect stay!

  • Eamon personally met us at Fairwinds, they had decorated the place to give it a Christmassy feel, with a lovely gift of mince pies and a bottle of bubbly (along with the essentials tea, coffee etc) spent time letting us know how things worked. The place was everything we expected and wanted for our Christmas with our family, was very warm and comfortable, very lovely modern well equipped kitchen, had a lovely deep bath to soak in. In a perfect place, close to the beautiful Bigbury beach. Would definitely recommend this Place for anyone wanting a beach holiday. Thank you for sharing your place and making our Christmas a special one. We wish you all the very best of luck in your new venture. You will do well.

Step back in time for a very special stay in our Gorgeous Grade II* Listed home. Chain House dates back to the 17th century and is located in the heart of Modbury, in the beautiful South Hams area of South Devon. Whether you're visiting Modbury for a particular event, for a relaxing short break in a beautiful area, for a family holiday close to Devon's stunning beaches, or for a more energetic outdoor holiday, Chain House provides the perfect venue for your stay.
Lou's family have lived in Chain House since 1960, and in recent years we have restored the house to make it both extremely comfortable and easy to live in, while at the same time retaining all of its original character, features and architectural integrity. At the back of the house, which dates back to Tudor times, we have created for our guests an entirely private and spacious self contained wing overlooking and immediately adjacent to the lovely walled garden. - The guest wing is attached to the main body of the house but has its own entrance/front door from the garden side, it's own very well equipped kitchen/diner and an elegant and spacious drawing room. - There are three double bedrooms and altogether we can sleep up to eight people. On the top floor Bedroom One is a particularly gorgeous and huge room spanning the full length of the building. It has an ensuite bathroom, and a separate single bed as well as a king size bed, should it be needed for 'family' accommodation. Please note that due to architectural constraints this bedroom is not accessed via a conventional door, but has a heavy curtain at the bottom of its own staircase, separating it from the lower floor for privacy. Bedrooms Two and Three are on the first floor below. Bedroom Two is slightly larger with both a double and a single bed once again allowing for extra sleeping space. Bedroom Three has one double bed. These two bedrooms share a very well appointed bath/shower room. - TV, WiFi, Hairdryers, Tea/Coffee making facilities, are in all bedrooms. - Perfect for any guests - walkers, surfers, sailors, golfers, or just plain relaxing. Chain House offers space, warmth and comfort throughout the year, located in the heart of vibrant Modbury, yet providing a quiet haven of peace and tranquility. The surrounding countryside is stunning, designated an area of outstanding natural beauty, and the views from the house open across the rooftops to meadows beyond. It is perfect for small family gatherings, or groups of friends to relax and explore the area. MODBURY: Lying sandwiched in a hollow between the South Devon Coast and Dartmoor, rimmed by gently undulating hills and meadows, Modbury is a small and ancient market town. It has a long and interesting history. In the Civil War there were two battles in Modbury, and it has origins tracing back to the Saxons. The name Modbury derives from the Saxon 'Mootburgh' meaning 'meeting place.' The Modbury of today is very much a 'living' and vibrant small town, with a real community spirit and feel. It offers an excellent range of amenities including a diverse and interesting range of unique shops, pubs and restaurants, and most importantly the convenience of our Co-Op open every day until late. We even boast a thriving art gallery, featuring many new and exciting exhibitions throughout the year.
There are spectacular walks straight from the house, meandering through the surrounding hills and valleys. Within a short drive the splendours of Devon unfold. 300 miles of coastline, with Modbury itself lying approximately four miles from the nearest beach and the South West Coast Path. A few miles to the North you can visit and enjoy the craggy beauty of Dartmoor National Park. The area is particularly attractive for those who enjoy the outdoors, with a myriad of activities including sailing, surfing, riding, golf, and walking/hiking. Culture and history are incredibly rich and diverse in Devon. There are more National Trust properties than any other county, ranging from medieval cottages to the Lutyens' Castle Drogo, the last castle to be built in Britain. The South Hams has become a gastronomic destination in its own right, with local producers of cheeses, meat, fruit, vegetables and more recently wines as well, featuring prominently in our shops and restaurants. Visits to the Farmer's Market in Kingsbridge and the famous Markets in Totnes and Tavistock are a delight not to be missed. The wider area also boasts a growing number of Artists and Artisans, and there are regular exhibitions throughout the year. The annual 'Artists Open Studio' - with events taking place during September across Devon - makes for an enjoyable and often fascinating outing.
  • We couldn't have asked for a better place to stay. The house was beautiful and spacious, very conveniently located and Louise could not have been more accommodating. The communication was excellent and she did everything she could to make our stay wonderful

    Emma2017-09-04T00:00:00Z
  • We spent a week at Chain House and enjoyed every minute. The house is amazing and has absolutely everything you could possibly want. Louise and Piers were perfect hosts , welcoming and friendly. Modbury is a lovely little town with nice places to eat. We enjoyed the White Hart. Nearby Bigbury beach is great for the day. We parked at couple of minutes walk away in the village car park and bought a South Hams weekly pass for 40 pounds. Which we used all over the area all week. We would definitely recommend this property for a lovely holiday.

    Victoria2017-07-08T00:00:00Z
  • We were privileged to be the first people to stay here and we loved our stay at the Chain House - it felt like being at home! Such a lovely house and everything we could have asked for! Louise was a wonderful host - relaxed but exceptionally thoughtful! Thanks for making our stay so easy and enjoyable! Modbury is great place to stay in the beautiful rolling South Hams with a small supermarket, a deli, a butchers, a pharmacy - and 3 diverse but lovely pubs/eateries! The house has been restored beautifully with original fittings and all of the rooms are top notch - especially the homely, fully equipped, jumbo-sized kitchen/lounge! The house has wonderful views across the valley - watch out for morning mist in the valleys on a sunny morning! Beautiful!

    rob2017-06-03T00:00:00Z
  • Fantastic house and lovely garden. Louise has thought of everything you might need to feel at home. It was perfect: crisp white bedding, fluffy pillows, comfy beds, great size and layout of the rooms, delightful views from the top floor. Can't think of anything that could be improved, except maybe having a parking spot a bit nearer the house (not that it did us much harm walking a few dozen metres from the carpark, given the number of cream teas we ate during our stay). I've now decided I much prefer the area to North Devon, which is our usual holiday location. South Devon is great because of the river walks, as well as the beaches being less crowded. It's really a world-class spot. Best day out was a trip to Lydford Gorge where the kids swam in the river - such a beautiful place.

    Wendy2017-08-26T00:00:00Z
  • Chain House is an amazing place and Lou is a fantastic host. The house is perfectly placed in the town of Modbury with its collection of shops, pubs and cafes and so accessible to the many beautiful local attractions. The accommodation suited us perfectly as a family group of six. Plenty of room to eat and socialise together and also spaces to escape to to read, relax or have a bit of quiet time. The garden is stunning, immaculately cared for and full of personal touches like the 'war horse' metal sculpture and the carved wooden bench that nestles in a secluded sunny spot. We loved relaxing on the hammock and garden loungers at the end of the day in the evening sunshine with a glass of wine! All in all we had a wonderfully relaxing break in Chain House and would highly recommend it to others. Lou and Piers are such welcoming hosts and have prepared Chain House to give guests everything they could need, it really felt like we were coming 'home' each evening. Thank you!

Our home is suitable for 4 people, including children. It is well maintained, light, open-planned, comfortable and clean. We have a welcoming wood-burner and a fully equipped kitchen. There is off road parking on this quiet and safe cul-de-sac road. The double doors open out on to a well loved west facing garden with plenty of seating and a trampoline.
For small families or couples on a weekend break, who want to be in a beautiful place.
Lovely quiet spot with friendly neighbours.
  • Lovely house in a quiet neighbourhood, really cosy with an incredible book collection! Unfortunately we didn't spend much time at the house at all as we were in the area for one night for a wedding, but I can imagine spending a relaxing weekend in Charlie's lovely home.

  • Very nice place! Charlie is a kind and helpful host.

    Elisa2017-07-10T00:00:00Z
  • The home was cute in a lovely village. Our biggest concern was the innaccuracy of the details. It listed essentials but didn't provide any of the essentials listed by airbnb (towels, shampoo, etc). Overall the place was okay but the locks on every other door take away from the homey feeling we typically find.

    Ben2017-05-29T00:00:00Z
  • Charlie was a pleasure to communicate with, and her place is fantastic value. We had an amazing time walking by the gorgeous Yealm river, just a stroll away, and exploring the beaches ( some of the most beautiful I've ever seen a short drive away ) Plymouth is close, so you've got all the big city advantages near by too.

My place is close to Modbury, South Devon. You’ll love my place because of its peace, rural location and lovely views. Close to Kingsbridge, Salcombe and South Hams coastline walks.. My place is good for couples, solo adventurers, and business travellers.
The apartment is a self contained wing of a devon longhouse, in a quiet setting one mile from Modbury; a lovely place to retreat , with books, open fire and TV available. Nights are quiet (apart from the occasional barn owl) and the lack of light pollution means you can see the myriad stars. Modbury has three pubs, all serving food, a bistro and two takeaways. It's a friendly, all year round community. The towns of the south hams (Kingsbridge, Salcombe, Totnes) are all within easy reach, and Dartmoor is fifteen minutes to the north.
Beautiful devon countryside surrounds us. Our neighbours are south devon cattle on one side, and horses on the other. Modbury is an attractive Georgian town which was the first town in the UK to go 'plastic free', over five years ago.
  • A lovely place to stay, I enjoyed my time in Carol's home. The space is homely, and the addition of the fire was very welcome. Carol was very thoughtful to leave butter and milk, and provided some lovely fresh eggs from her chicken. I would recommend this place to anybody looking to stay in the Devon countryside.

    Laura2017-03-17T00:00:00Z
  • This is a peaceful pretty retreat. So many lovely homely touches, a full bookshelf of different reads, fresh eggs from carols chickens, crisp white bed sheets on a proper old fashioned brass bedstead. Lovely handmade soap, by the claw foot bath. Birds flying under the eaves and a pot of sweet peas scenting the living room. A real special place, nestled deep in the country. Feels like stepping back in time, into a peaceful hug! Thanks to our hosts carol and Peter

  • We enjoyed two nights here in en route to Cornwall. It's close to beaches which was great for us with a toddler and a 10 month old. The bed is super comfy and the shower was excellent too, the kitchen and sitting area has everything you need for a short stay. Carol and Peter were excellent hosts and we enjoyed a glass of wine with them on arrival.
