“Petres Gorge is located 13km west of Rethymno and its mouth is situated on the beach of Episkopi. The river of the gorge is fed by the waters of Kollita Gorges and the surrounding area, covering almost half Rethymnon Prefecture. It has water all year round and forms an important wetland of Crete, especially at its mouth near Episkopi.”

“A forested valley and a hamlet in the northwestern territories of Ierapetra. In the forest Pinus brutia is a prevalent drought-tolerant species that can withstand six-month droughts and grow in various rocks and soils. There are also kermes oaks , planes, Cretan maples, cypresses and several other plant species. In the basin, where the settlements of Selakano and Mathokastana are located, there are many walnut and pear trees, vineyards and, patches of fields where vegetables are cultivated. The forest is the nesting and hunting ground of many predatory birds. It is the most productive apiculture spot in Crete. You can eat great local dishes at the tavern of "Pezoulia".”

“The Kakoperatos canyon is located in Agios Vasilios area and it’s a tributary of the Megalos River (Kourtaliotis) and as its name suggests (bad passage in Greek) it cannot be accessed from humans (by trekking). It is a strikingly beautiful and rugged canyon, ideal for canyoning. It has water most of the year and shapes 7-8 impressive waterfalls with deep ponds, ideal for jumps. Possibly, there is no other canyon in Crete with such beautiful and vivid turquoise waters. It’s exit is next to the last houses of Agios Vasilios and the stream crosses the courtyards of the village! ”

“The holm oak wood (Azilakodasos) is located 11km west of Vrachasi and 9km south of Malia, in the foothills of Mount Selena. The small forest can be accessed either by walking the smooth path from Krassi village or by following the trail from Malia that runs uphill. There is also a small network of forest dirt roads in the area. It is a beautiful forest with holm oaks or azilakes (in Cretan dialect), i.e. trees of the species Quercus ilex. The oaks are rare and can only be found in few other areas of Crete and small Aegean islands, such as Ikaria. These resistant trees are tall (10-15m) and grow at a relatively high altitude.”
