Best things to do in Johannesburg

History Museum
“The Apartheid Museum opened in 2001 and is acknowledged as the pre-eminent museum in the world dealing with 20th century South Africa, at the heart of which is the apartheid story. The Apartheid Museum, the first of its kind, illustrates the rise and fall of apartheid. An architectural consortium, comprising several leading architectural firms, conceptualized the design of the building on a seven-hectare stand. The museum is a superb example of design, space and landscape offering the international community a unique South African experience.”

Jazz Club
“A live music venue with shows 4 nights a week. The food is overpriced and not very good; eat before you go and stick with drinks and music. ”

“A very large venue so easy to get a table. It is fun, African and vibey. There is also a curio shop just below. When going to Zoo Lake keep to the path around the lake and don't be too flashy.”

Arts & Crafts Store
“The most established precinct on the edge of downtown Joburg, 44 Stanley is a mixed use development that fuses downtown urbanism with a subtle sophistication. A mix of carefully-curated, bespoke stores and independent restaurants gives the centre an authenticity that runs through eating, drinking, shopping, working and living experiences. Shady arcades and green courtyards between what was once a series of industrial 1930's buildings make this a unique Johannesburg space. Visit some of my favorite shops - Salvation cafe which always has fresh delicious organic food, Luna (fashion), Mungo (towels & throws), Bean There (coffee roastery), a chocolatier, bakery, jeweler, the Jozi shop (funky Johannesburg items) and loads of others. 5 mins drive from Greenside, unexpected & fun!”

Museum
“Located on an 80ha site next to the Johannesburg Zoo, in Saxonwold, the Ditsong National Museum of Military History is one of South Africa’s most undervalued attractions. It is the only one of its kind in the country, and is considered the “spiritual and symbolic home of regular and reserve soldiers and veterans in South Africa and throughout the world”.”

“You may think you’re able to tell your favourite beer from the rest, but you could well be caught out at the SAB World of Beer’s beer tastings. Whether you consider yourself a beer connoisseur or if you’re not much of a beer drinker at all, SAB’s experienced team will guide you through an informative, fun-filled tasting. Once a month on a Saturday, the World of Beer hosts a beer-pairing lunch. This event is almost unprecedented in an industry overly preoccupied with wine and whiskey pairings, but not with exploring and creating meals that deliberately complement the multitude of flavours found in beer. ”

“Lively joint. A favourite of lots of the young and trendy Joburg residents. Just be sure to keep your cellphone tucked away, as it's also a favourite of pick-pockets.”
