“Volcano National Park is located just outside of the village of Volcano. Just a short 40 minute trip from the Ohi'a Hideaway. Some areas have been closed following the 2018 lava flow largely due to earthquake damage. However, the parks is open and there is tons to explore! Highly recommended in early spring (March and April) when the Ohi'a blossoms are in bloom, absolutely gorgeous!”

“When the lava lake in the crater is active, you can see molten lava bubbling. When the lava lake is not so active, you can still enjoy its beautiful night glow at the lookout. A must see. But the lava lake activity changes all the time, so if the lava lake is not visible when you go the first time, come back and check it out later of the day or another day. You may be pleasantly surprised. The cottage is only a few minutes away, makes it easy to visit the crater frequently.”

“You can't visit Volcano without going to see our ever-changing summit of Kilauea, featuring the now (at the time of this writing) the 1800 ft deep Halema'uma'u crater. Though, as of this writing, there is no lava lake present, that can change at any time. ”

“The trail starts at Volcano House. Descend into the caldera itself, through a fern forest, then come back up the same trail. Its a 400 ft. elevation change with some stairs and rocky footing.”
