“The water quality is unbelievable, its like swimming in silk. The locals drink this water and the fish caught here are beautiful to eat. The area is full of mystique as there was a huge eruption here that altered the landscape and buried local villages. For this reason the area is tapu or sacred. It's a wonderful lake to explore for a swim and the wonderful views. There is also a day trip to a waterfall.”

“Great food and service close by to your stay! Just 1.7km down the road from your stay is The Landing Cafe. Their 2 chefs, Pete or Ratana have created a new menu and their food is legendary. It certainly pays to call and book as they can be busy or conversely if its a bit quiet they will close early. I visit there often and give this place the big thumbs up recomendation! ”

“A 15km one way walk along the edge of Lake Tarawera either starting or ending at Hot Water beach. Please book one of the water taxis for the outward or return trip. The brochure is in the file with all the details of how to do this. There is a great natural hot pool just off the main walking track. Please ask either of us for the directions. ”

“The gems of Lake Tarawera! The best way to access these spots is by boat or water taxi but you can do a 5ish hour walk to get to hot water beach if you’d prefer. Wairua Stream and the Champagne Pool can only be accessed by boat, simply park up near to these spots (see the directions below) and people have separated geothermal areas with rocks and sandbags so there are natural hot springs ready to go right on the side of the lake including amazing views of Tarawera and our native bush. If you have the means to get there then it’s a must do!”

“Not so much a hike, but a delightful board and nature walk through a wetland and along one edge of beautiful Lake Okareka. There is a little bird hide along the way where you can peek out and try to spot a dabchick or coot. The walk takes about 30 mins to the end, where you will need to turn around and come back along the same path. There is good parking at the track start.”
