  • Ted is a welcoming, friendly and informative host. The "Tree House" is a fun and unique space that offers privacy and charm for an island get-a-way. We had a great time in the space and on Peaks Island. Thank you!

  • It is very rare that one's fantasies or expectations about a vacation - or anything else - match up to the reality, but Ted's tree house and Peak's Island did just that. As other reviewers have repeatedly noted, Ted is very warm and a perfect host, going well above and beyond what is necessary and having a keen sense of when to pop his head in and offer suggestions or help, and when to leave his guests to their own devices. I am already planning my next visit. The tree house and surrounding area were exactly what I needed in terms of pace, peace, space, and perspective. A balm to all senses, I cannot recommend it highly enough.

  • Our stay at the Treehouse was perfect! My husband and I stayed there during the weekend of our wedding, and Ted went out of his way to make it a romantic and welcoming environment (he even left us a wedding card!). We ended each night with a game of cribbage and a glass of wine out on the private deck at the entrance to the Treehouse with the porch light on and a very friendly local cat hanging out with us. The kitchen had everything that we needed and more, and a mere 2 minute walk from the apartment is a small secluded beach. It is a beautiful area to explore at a leisurely pace when the weather is nice, and the Treehouse is a perfectly cozy place to settle in if the weather forces you indoors. Ted was easy to get in touch with, was very informative about the house and the island, and is all around, a delightful person. We would recommend the Treehouse to any couple!

  • We had a wonderful visit to Ted's tree house! He's charming, helpful, and welcoming, and he gave us great recommendations for our short stay on Peaks Island. Even in the winter, the tree house is adorable and comfortable (and the ladder really IS sturdy!). I would definitely stay at Ted's again on a future visit to Peaks!

  • Ted is kind and sweet. Very helpful and eager to support guests having a lovely experience on Peak's (Website hidden by Airbnb) close the water. Beautiful location with quirky interiors.

    Riis2017-06-13T00:00:00Z
  • We spent 3 nights at Ted's treehouse and it was totally wonderful. At first I thought we'd make a mistake booking so much time on a tiny, tiny island. But we had plenty to do and explore. We brought our bikes on the ferry, which was worth it, as that's how a large percentage of people get around Peaks. Although some other bnb-ers said they got a ride via the local cop! Highlights: spending time with Ted, buying live lobster down by the ferry and cooking it up in seawater, exploring Diamond Island via canoe, thrift-store hunting in Portland for an afternoon, hanging out at the beach down the street from Ted's, and talking to the lovely Peaks Island locals. Fantastic experience!

  • It needs to be said that there is no comfortable place to sit and relax unless you leave the property.

    Dana 2016-08-29T00:00:00Z
  • There just are not words nor pictures that can possibly describe the magic that happens here! I felt like Pollyanna playing the gladness game, only to find Joy is the name of this little house. Joy is what I felt in the air! I instantly fell in love with the soul of this house and realized this was not just a place to stay. I nestled in and thought I would never be able to leave. I was invited to share meals in the big house. Wasn't sure I would want to give up my solitude, but was drawn to the warmth and special soul of Teddy. I felt so at home in the big house that I started nesting there too! Ted's rooms and taste in antiques, decorating, fine linens and whimsical uses of every window, dish and nic knack is beyond words. I slept one night in the meditation tower. Answers just come to you up there. Of course there is the island! Oh my, the island. There is a magic to behold. Teddy is a master at the secrets of this island. You will feel like Tom Sawyer (or Becky) This was totally unexpected to find heart and soul as well as an adorable, irresistible tiny house that has everything you could ever need and some surprises thrown in for good measure.

Peaks Island is a 20 minute ferry ride from Portland. Northcliffe is a traditional island cottage, (C. 1917) and commands magnificent views to the North, East and West over its rock-bound shore line. This property, on the northern shore of the Island, is a seven minute drive or a 2 mile walk from the ferry landing.
Northcliffe is perched on a small rise overlooking its waterfront lawn and expansive views up Casco Bay and several of its islands.
Northcliffe is located in a quiet area along with other same era cottages. There is a short pathway to a nearby private beach which we have permission to use.

  • Ashley was a warm and welcoming host. She left some local honey and a lovely note welcoming us and asked us to text her with any questions or concerns. The cottage was very pretty in a beautiful section of the island. We spent a lot of time on the screen in porch. I would rent this cottage again. It was a wonderful week.

    Kristen2016-07-10T00:00:00Z
  • A wonderful cottage in a beautiful setting just above the tree line. We spent hours on the screened-in front porch enjoying the sea breeze and the view of the boats going by. The house is nicely decorated and had everything we needed for a week's stay. The beach is a two minute walk down a path from the front door. We didn't swim but found lots of sea glass and shells. The house is part of a row of houses which are very close together, but the neighbors were friendly and considerate. Ashley was a great host and gave us all the information we needed. We'd love to go back again!

  • Evergreen cottage is a perfect little getaway on a beautiful island. The cottage had everything we needed to relax and have fun. It's nestled on a ledge behind the tree line overlooking the bay and an adjacent island. It's about a mile or so from the town center (shops, ferry, and restaurants). Ashley was super helpful and communicated with us regularly. We definitely recommend Ashley's cottage

    Christopher2016-09-05T00:00:00Z
  • Ashley as the most communicative and welcoming host for my friends and I. We didn't see her during our stay but she provided us with clear instructions a few days prior to ensure all ran smoothly. Her cottage is super quaint and has all the ammenities one could need for a quiet peaceful weekend away. The description and photos paint accurate picture for what you'll expect in person!

    Julie2016-10-10T00:00:00Z
  • A gem nestled within the dotted pine ridge of Peaks. Super clean, charming, and homey. A place to refill your cup

    Jamie2017-06-15T00:00:00Z
  • Ashley's family home is a sweet island classic, and an opportunity to step back in time. Ashley was great about touching base, while also granting us privacy. A nice balance.

    Rachel2016-07-19T00:00:00Z
  • Great cabin on a special island. The pictures do not do it justice. The place was hard to find (up a hidden staircase after an unmarked street and behind other houses) but worth the efforts. Would certainly look for any excuse to return.

Turn of the century three bedroom home where casual coastal and farmhouse collide.
Welcome to “Home Sweet Home” a turn-of-the-century home reflecting true heartfelt Americana. We strive to provide you with a real family get-away that will bring you back to focusing on you and your loved ones. Stay with us and unplug. We want your family experience to bridge that “re-connection,”; your second honeymoon; a real home-away from home with privacy and true north east island living. We want our guests to focus on each other, enjoy the Casco Bay and to get-away from the daily hustle and bustle. Our little slice Aloha is a short nautical journey off the Mainland Coast of Portland, ME. We recommend grabbing a bottle of wine at the Down East Liquor store, sit back and enjoy your picturesque sojourn to Long Island. Once on the boat, breath, relax and take in all the natural beauty that surrounds you. On Long Island, we encourage you to create your personal vacation. You can go treasure hunting at Wreck Cove; search for glistening sea glass, play “eye spy” and count all the rabbits on Bunny Hop Lane; or if beach activities are your thing, grab the paddle boards and head down to the beach of your choice, it’s an island you know. Charter a lobster or fishing excursion. We encourage you to reconnect with your loved ones, take the time to roast marshmallows and “talk story” around our hibachi. It’s your nature story. Best way to describe Home Sweet Home is charming, casual and quaint. If nightlife is your thing, head onward to “The Old Port” of Portland that offers several restaurants, breweries and pubs with live music for your enjoyment. If you miss the last boat just hire a water taxi and get back to Long Island in half the time. Aloha!
  • Rachel's house was just lovely. It was exactly as described in the listing, and she was an incredibly accommodating and gracious hostess. She was easily available for any questions and proactively worked to make our stay as comfortable as possible. The house and the island were both wonderful.

  • Great place!

    Maggie2017-08-18T00:00:00Z
  • The house was well decorated and modern, still with that Long Island feel! The kitchen was great for hosting and stocked with all the things! Rachel had the fire pit full of wood and ready to light. The children played board games and hung around the fireplace on the cooler mornings. We loved our yay at Home sweet home!! Thanks again!

  • Ted is the most gracious host we've ever had on Airbnb, and dare I say that we've even become friends during our weekend stay. Our visit to the island was so packed with Ted-recommended adventures, that we felt that we'd lived there for months. He was gracious enough to give us a preliminary tour of the island in his jeep, made us an amazing oatmeal breakfast, lent us extra sweaters when we packed too lightly for a stormy day, and let us borrow his canoe to tour the other islands. He is a true artist and has built an incredible home over several years. We will definitely be back soon, and will bring friends with us. We definitely recommend Ted to anyone with a sense of adventure and desire to get to know the island like a local resident. Thank you Ted! We miss you already.

  • Ted is a fantastic host and makes you feel welcome. His house is in a beautiful location on Peaks Island, and I hope to visit again.

  • Great spot--Ted was very accommodating and helpful. Would recommend to Portland first-timers.

    Race2016-07-03T00:00:00Z
  • Absolutely loved Ted, his beautiful home, and the island. He couldn't have been more welcoming, helpful, and charming. Felt very at home in the antique, eccentric, artistic atmosphere. A place with a lot of history and character. I went with my partner for his birthday and Ted really helped me make it special, he treated us more like family than guests. I can't say enough about him and the island. What an amazing experience, I will be back, and I'll tell my friends as well!

    Jessie2016-09-11T00:00:00Z
  • Ted is an overall fantastic host. We loved his home; the room was great, the tower to watch the sunset was phenomenal, and the beach is just 10 seconds down the road. Ted seems to truly enjoy having guests stay at his home and his positivity radiates off of him. He gave us great recommendations of places to see and some great hidden gems which we were happy to explore. We spent two nights in the Queen's Corner and one night in the Treehouse room. The treehouse cottage is truly amazing. When we return, which we will, we are definitely going to try to reserve the treehouse room. It is amazing! We had a blast with Ted and felt like we were "home" just a few minutes after we arrived. He is a kind and gracious host and we loved sharing his home with him.

    Maya2015-08-30T00:00:00Z
  • Ted was a great host and Peaks Island is a great adventure. The Island Inn is good for lunch, Hannigans Market for snacks and supplies. Be sure to get out and explore the whole island, and be prepared to be greeted by Ted's two friendly cats!

    Jesse2016-07-06T00:00:00Z
  • Ted is people oriented and wants to give you the best experience on the island. He is an eclectic artist and has a house that goes along with that description. Our room seemed a bit of an after thought. There was no headboard for the bed and dust under the bed. Cluttered and dark even on a sunny day, that may have been to keep the room cool. One bathroom that we shared with other guests was uncomfortable. We still had a great time on peaks island.

    Laura2016-07-25T00:00:00Z

Charming early 20th century cottage with ocean views. Watch the sun set over Casco Bay from the porch, and listen to the waves lapping just steps from the cabin. Old growth pines surround a private back yard rock garden, with deck and firepit. Weekly rentals available!
Original features with modern amenities are the highlights of this beautiful oceanside cottage. Outdoor dining on both the front and back porch, comfy mattresses, and a back yard with a hammock.
Evergreen Landing is a magical part of Peaks Island. With a close-knit community of neighbors, a shared beach with tidepool for the kids, the neighborhood is located at the quiet northeastern tip of the island, away from the busyness of "Down Front", but a short bike ride or drive to the grocer, restaurants, and ice cream!
  • I would highly recommend staying at the picturesque Evergreen Cottage. It sits in a lovely location overlooking the water, and the cottage is full of charm and personal touches that make it feel especially cozy. Mary is a dream host-- kind, welcoming, and quick to reply with information or hot tips about local events. I already miss sitting on the spacious front porch, sipping my morning coffee, and taking in the beautiful view! Thank you again, Mary!

  • My girlfriends and I spent a lovely weekend at Evergreen Cottage. The property is clean, spacious, and has a beautiful yard and view of the water. It's at the far side of the island, so not as crowded or full of tourists. Mary was very accommodating and provided all the information we needed for the house. We had a wonderful time, and I would highly recommend staying here.

  • Mary was great with tips and recommendations before our arrival. The house was perfect for us with nice neighbors. Charming Maine getaway that was very relaxing. Great space and views of the water. Everything you need for a nice weekend away.

  • The pictures do not do this place justice! The decor and layout are so stylist. It's a great cottage with a beautiful porch overlooking the bay. There's a little rocky beach down the path. The Maine coast couldn't be closer! Everything inside was comfy and cozy. No complaints from me. There are quite a few stairs to get to the property, but that was disclosed and it was nice exercise. Lovely place!

This renovated home in the tranquil Tolman Heights section of Peaks offers a modern kitchen, full bath, and sleeps six more than comfortably. This spacious home is a short stroll from Spar Cove and the Back Shore, where you can overlook all of Casco Bay and the open ocean. Great biking, kayaking, walking, and swimming on the island. Hear the buoy bells, swim in the crisp water, walk, hike, bike, watch waves crash along the Back Shore, dine out, eat ice cream, daydream, nap, and relax fully.
Away from the more crowded, hustle and bustle of other island areas, this peaceful three-bedroom, beautifully renovated island home sits at the top of Tolman Heights. It stands on a prominent grassy rise surrounded by birch, pine, and oak trees, with plenty of lawn, a covered porch, and a sunny deck for sitting in the summer warmth. In the morning, you might see horses going by while sipping your coffee and listening to the birds sing. Ease into your vacation. Enjoy the quiet — occasionally a car will drive by on the country island road, but mostly walkers, bikers, or no one at all. The house features a large modernized kitchen with a flat-bottom coffee maker (filters included), toaster, gas range and full refrigerator, a bathroom with large tub/shower (great hot water/pressure!), towels, beds with good pillows, comforters, linens, and high-quality mattresses, a large living room with three comfortable couches, a TV/reading room, bedroom ceiling fans, and polished pine wood floors throughout. Also included is a landline phone, wifi, flatscreen TV, and full cable channel lineup. ... all surrounded by a large lawn, well-groomed grounds, and classic Maine island woods.
Tolman Heights is a peaceful and serene island enclave of mostly summer homes. Artists, writers, musicians, and families have been drawn to this area of the island for decades and generations. It is a magical spot -- quiet, peaceful, and soulful, so if you like loud and boisterous, it won't be your speed. Just up the hill from Spar Cove (with a raft you can swim to), the Back Shore, and open ocean tessellated with Casco Bay's majestic outer islands, Tolman Heights is one of the last "true Maine” Peaks enclaves. Time has not altered "The Heights" much in the past 100-plus years.
  • Peaks Island is a great place to stay. This cottage was a nice get away for our family. We could bike everywhere on the island and enjoyed the downtime.

    Jordy2017-09-01T00:00:00Z
  • Peaks Island is beautiful, and this cabin had plenty of room for our family. The house is probably a twenty minute walk to the ferry dock, but there is $10 taxi that circles the island and a $25/hr bike rental company. The kitchen was well stocked with supplies, but not food staples. Plan to bring meals or enjoy Portland, as the restaurants in the island leave a lot to be desired.

    Lily2017-07-26T00:00:00Z
  • Super cute cottage, well equipped and quiet! A lovely spot on peaks island!

    Kate2017-06-18T00:00:00Z
  • Hope cottage is located in one of my favorite spots on Peaks Island. Away from the hustle and bustle but a quick bike ride to anywhere you may want to be. The cottage is very cozy and comfortable. We will miss walking down to Spar Cove with our coffee in the morning to take in the sights and sounds that Peaks offers. My son discovered the grazing horses on the ball field and enjoyed visiting them in the mornings. A magical family time, from Picnic Point to Centennial Beach, beautiful sunsets and lazy days on the rocks. Be prepared to truly relax!

    Pamela2017-08-23T00:00:00Z
  • A wonderful, quiet, quaint cottage in the woods of Peaks Island. Staying here is like going to your favorite friend's cabin in the woods of Maine. The setting is rustic, but perfect in its own way. You hear birds in the morning and you have easy access to the shore on the south side of the island. You will need to get a taxi from the ferry to bring your luggage over the romantically long dirt road Ior bring your car on the ferry for about $63 roundtrip), but good walkers will have no trouble going everywhere on the island. Otherwise bikes and golf carts are rentable. Cell is extremely limited at the house and there's no wifi, but wifi is available at the library, even after hours outside. They even provide a bench. And cell is available as you walk around to higher ground or closer to town on the island. The house has DVD and video with a TV. Also a good supply of board games. There's plenty to do on the island and the ferry leaves frequently to Portland proper where you can find even more to do. The house is large enough for families, with two bedrooms upstairs sleeping a total of 5, and sleeping options on the first floor, including a futon. Cooking utensils are plentiful, a small cooler, microwave, nice gas stove, but bring your own spices and herbs and other ingredients other than salt, pepper, and Tabasco sauce. The island market in town can supply your major needs for a fair price--the butcher shop is fresh and friendly; dairy products and veggies are fresh and good and include things like fresh mozz and good parm; beer and wine is available too, as is insect spray. Apparently there is a farmers market on the weekend, but we stayed midweek and can't officially comment. The restaurants are high quality and reflect Portland's foodie bent. You will have a wonderful time. Highly recommended.

This cottage is located on the backshore of Peaks Island, Maine. The island has a small town feel and unparalleled ocean views and access. Set apart on the more private side of Peaks, the house is surrounded by woodland and a 1 min walk to ocean.

  • Our family had a great time at Susan's place! It was a perfect home base for biking and enjoying the coastline. Nice and shady, easy walk to the water. The beds are firm and the pillows a little (Website hidden by Airbnb) if you're sensitive to that you might want to pack your own pillows.

  • This was a great place to stay! The house is very well equipped: everything you could want for a comfortable holiday. It is an easy walk (around half an hour) to the island's centre for shops, cafes and ferry - even quicker if you hire a golf cart. The house is close to 1 of the main beaches. The island is beautiful - thoroughly recommend this as a place to stay for a wonderful holiday. Ann

  • We had a great stay at this cottage and enjoyed walking to the nearby ocean shore and exploring the island.

  • Susan is great and her house is exactly as depicted! Peak's island is an awesome getaway from Downtown Portland-- highly recommend the golf cart rentals, makes it so easy and fun to zip around. Will definitely be returning!

  • Susan responded quickly to our last minute booking. She made the check in really easy. It was a good sized place with a lot of privacy. The bed was uncomfortable and the cleaning and service fees were way too high.

  • This is a lovely, rustic cottage on the backshore of Peaks Island. It was abundantly stocked with sheets, comforters, pillows and towels, cooking implements and WiFi, which was good, because cell phone coverage on the island is spotty. Our party of six used both the bedrooms and the sleeping porch and found the beds and ventilation comfortable. There was a minor plumbing issue during our stay, and although our host was off-island, she responded to a text quickly and had a jovial and informative handyman there by morning to replace the cracked connector on the kitchen sink drain. If you aren't friendly when you get to Peaks Island, you get that way fast. Although we were newbies, we had no trouble finding out from the locals how everything worked, from which of the many beaches were best for the kids at various times and tides, to the procedure for renting a golf cart - a fun luxury at $120 a day or $25 per hour. The electric carts are pleasant because they are quiet and don't smell like a lawnmower, but the one we had didn't keep a charge for long (there was a sturdy charging cord in the basement of the cottage, but it takes longer to charge the battery than it does to run it down) and it didn't have a headlight. It was the only one available because it was a busy weekend on the island, and even with a reservation, the rental places are kind of first-come, first-served. Before sunset, one of us waited around and was able to trade it in for a noisier gas-powered cart with a headlight so we could explore the rocky beaches on the back shore under the light of the full moon without worrying about running out of juice. It's a great island for walking, biking and exploring by cart. There was a washer and dryer in the unfinished basement, which was handy, as well as adequate brooms, mops, cleaning supplies and a vacuum so we could keep things tidy with kids and dog coming and going from the beach. There was a good supply of septic friendly toilet paper and some rudimentary spices on hand. I would suggest bringing plenty of your own paper towels, garbage bags and toiletries, as well as the bulk of the food and beverage you will need. There is an on-island market for milk, eggs, veggies and such, but the prices are higher and the selection is limited. Two of our party enjoyed a morning ferry ride to Portland in the middle of our stay for fresh seafood from Harbor Fish Market and a dozen Holy Donuts. We were there in mid-August and there were very few mosquitoes or flies. There is a fireplace, which we didn't use because the nights weren't cool enough. If you do use it, I think you can buy wood on the island at both the market and the hardware store near the ferry.

  • Susan was quick and detailed with her responses. The place was as advertised inside and out. There was a lot of common space for us to have fun. I would recommend the place but beware of having being loud in the after hours, neighbors do complain.

  • 909 was perfect. Susan was great and we will keep this address as a 'go to' the next time we're on Peak's. Susan's responsiveness was excellent.

  • A group of us stayed here over New Year's weekend. We were looking for a quiet, remote place near the ocean where we could cook, catch up and relax. This place was perfect! The common areas are comfortable and clean, and the kitchen is well-stocked with a great workhorse of a stove and oven. There's enough privacy that it doesn't feel crowded, though, so sleeping was just as comfortable. The host, Christian, was really responsive. We would definitely stay here again!

He also had some great recommendations for places around town. The house was clean, well stocked, and the check in process was simple. We had a great time and would recommend this place to others, it's a beautiful home with a great view. Thanks!

  • We had a wonderful weekend at Terri's place on Grand Diamond. The house was perfect for us and Terri made everything incredibly easy

    Dan2017-08-13T00:00:00Z
  • Terri was an excellent host, we could not have found a better host or place to spend a peaceful, fun weekend! Terri was easily reachable and helpful, answering all of our questions and giving us tips for getting to the island. Very friendly neighborhood, easy to get to, and a perfectly homey, cozy cottage with a beautiful deck for evening drinks and morning yoga. Flexible check in and out times were a huge bonus! We all loved our stay and will certainly visit again as soon as we can!

    Rebecca2016-09-05T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing island- such a fun adventure, Terri is easy to communicate with. Would definitely go back again.

  • Terri's place was the perfect getaway. The island was beautiful, quiet, and restful, yet so close to all the amazing amenities of Portland. She gave excellent advice and directions for getting to the house as well as how to enjoy the island. The trip went very smoothly, and she was a kind, attentive, and helpful host. The house itself was charming and perfect for a group of friends looking for a quiet, relaxing weekend.

  • We had a wonderful stay here. The house is clean and has everything you need, plus a great porch for sitting outside and a grill, and the owner was super responsive to any questions we had. But really the essence of why to stay here is the whole experience. The wonderful little island in Casco bay; the ferry trip from Portland; the walk up the gravel path to the house; and watching the sunset from the ferry dock. Overall one of the best weekend getaways I've ever done. I hope to come back again sometime.

    Mark2016-06-27T00:00:00Z
  • Island Charm! Awesome wrap around porch for morning coffee and afternoon cocktails. Very spacious and comfortable. We will definately return next summer to Great Diamond Island.

    Brie2015-08-31T00:00:00Z
  • What a lovely location!! Great diamond island was gorgeously scenic, and living in the semi-isolated island community felt like a relaxing trip back in time when life was slower and more community based. We loved looking for sea creatures by the sandbar, walking along the beaches, a nice lunch at diamond cove, and playing Mario brothers with the kids at the cottage. The house had awesome views and porches, was very well-stocked, and had lots of comfy beds. Terri went far out of her way to make sure we had an excellent stay. Our best host yet by far!!

A 1900's cottage makes the perfect getaway! This home carries all the charm from the turn-of-the-century but with modern living conveniences. Our cottage accommodates nine guests comfortably and is just two blocks from Centennial Beach. Our big front porch is the perfect spot for your morning coffee with "peeks of blue" ocean looking out onto Diamond Passage, or watching the sunset in the evenings. This cottage is a real gem. Clean, cozy and comfortable! Weekly rentals from May-Sept.
An open living room welcomes family gatherings and a flow of conversation with plenty of seating. A gas fireplace is the centerpiece of the living room and is the quintessential Maine vibe for turn-of-the-century cottages. It provides warmth and ambience for chilly days or open the doors and windows on hot summer nights to catch those sea breezes. This cottage will make your vacation memorable. Three bedrooms are located upstairs and really showcase the charm of this cottage. The master bedroom has a queen sized wrought iron bed and is a sanctuary of relaxation with a window overlooking Diamond Passage. Ample floor space allows room for a pack 'n play style crib for a baby if needed. (An extra wide baby gate is also available for the steps of the front porch if needed for a baby as well.) A second upstairs bedroom provides sleeping for two with a full size bed and large closet. The third bedroom accommodates three people with two twin beds and a twin size trundle "hideaway" bed. With the main three bedrooms upstairs, a downstairs den doubles as a fourth bedroom and media zone. The den has a flatscreen tv equipped with Roku for family movie night. High speed internet and wifi is available for guests as well as a library of books and board games, cards and puzzles for rainy days not spent exploring the island or at the beach. Stacking washer/dryer are located in the back of the house next to the bathroom. A well equipped kitchen makes entertaining easy. Dining table with room for six as well as an additional three barstools at the kitchen counter. A screened in porch provides additional space for outdoor dining and the back deck (off the kitchen) is ready for your summer grilling on the barbecue grill. Our backyard overlooks the beautiful gardens of Reed Park in the historic Trefethen neighborhood.
Peaks Island is a small island located about three miles off the coast of Portland, Maine. A short fifteen minute ferry ride from the city, this island is a destination location for day trippers in the summer months. The year round population is about 1100. Summer residents total nearly 5000. "Downfront" is the harbor side of the village where most of the shops, restaurants, churches, health center, post office, grocery store, police and fire department are located. Our cottage is located on the north side of the island in the historic Trefethen neighborhood (first built in the late 1880's). You'll adore the charm and architecture of these homes. We are on the main "loop" of the island, so during summer months you'll enjoy laughter from bicyclists and dog walkers as they explore the island. We are two blocks from Centennial Beach and TEIA sail club which is a popular venue for many summer weddings and parties.

3 bedroom updated cottage offers dramatic ocean views, outdoor shower and lovely garden. Wake up with the sunrise on the porch and let the surf lull you to sleep. In between enjoy the beauty of Peaks Island; only a 17 minute ferry ride to Portland.
The Nutshell has cottage charm with a clean, airy feel. Wood floors throughout, tons of light, front and side porches and a perennial garden. The house is directly across a quiet dirt road from the ocean with no obstruction to the amazing view of the ocean and surrounding islands. The rooms are spacious, especially the kitchen and upper front bedroom. Downstairs bathroom has tub and shower. Upstairs bathroom has shower. The outdoor shower, tucked away behind the garden is a refreshing way to start or end your day on this beautiful, quiet island.
Our quiet neighbors are far enough away to allow for a real sense of privacy. Most likely the only people you'll see are a few folks out walking or bike riding. Beware, they often stop to admire the garden. About 100 yards up the dirt road is a wooded path that leads to Josiah's Cove. Typically deserted, this rocky cove with breathtaking views is great for kids to explore. Near the ferry there are several good restaurants, an ice cream shop, island grocery store, gift shop, library and small museum. Sandy Beach, 5 minutes from the house by car or 10 minutes by bike, is great for young children and sunbathers alike. The Trefethen Club (tennis, sailing, social events, kids summer camps) offers week long memberships. A Horse Camp on the island offers half day and full day camp for children and teens.
  • The Nutshell is wonderful and we felt comfortable there...our only regret was that our time went too quickly! Steve offered a guide from the ferry to the home and that was most helpful....also an indication of how accessible he was. The location is great...tucked away down a dirt road and perched on a point overlooking the water. The home was tidy, very clean and offered everything one needed, including an outdoor shower! No TV but that was perfect.....time just spent on the front porch. Peak's Island is a great destination and we would recommend the Nutshell for a wonderful retreat. Basically my husband and I used it but my daughter and grand daughter did stay with us for two nights. The house can comfortably accommodate four to six guests. We hope to return later this fall! Sue and Ed

    Susan2015-07-09T00:00:00Z
  • We loved staying at the Nutshell! The house is located on the backside of the island, which is quiet and relaxing. It's a bit further away from the ferry terminal, but we appreciated the location and not being part of the busy side of the island. It has a rustic feel, and with all the amenities you could want, if enjoying the Maine coast is your priority. There are good views from the entire front of the house; I enjoyed sitting on the front porch, reading a book. Steve was prompt in responding and very helpful, and the rental included 2 bikes and beach chairs to borrow while at the stay. We throughly enjoyed this home and hope to stay there again! Thank you!!!

  • Kathy was an amazing host! Her house was absolutely beautiful and the views were picture perfect. She was very easy to communicate with and even allowed us to take our time during checkout so we did not have to rush. She left us a very warm welcome with a bottle of wine and cookies. • Our weekend at Fran and Kathie's home was amazing. Fran helped us have a successful steamed lobster dinner including fresh mussels plucked straight from the ocean. Residing in Alabama we are novices at the Northern culture. Fran and Kathie made everything so easy while staying in the background in order to insure privacy. Great balance. The Dahlias and the peach hydrangeas were enchanting. The blankets were soft, the stars were plentiful and the hammock was perfection. Thank you for making our visit with our daughter and son-in-law memorable and nostalgic. We see them so rarely, you made it effortless to concentrate on the important things like making memories rather than housekeeping details. Thank you for your hospitality. If you are ever in Alabama drop on by

  • This place is absolutely spectacular! Gorgeous views, home, and property to stroll around. So many sweet spots to watch the sunrise, listen to the waves, and stargaze. We had fun climbing along the rocks and swimming, too. The house and property are beautiful, full gorgeous gardens, dramatic views, is clean and stocked with the essentials. Our hosts helped us cook lobsters next to the submarine bunker (!) directly behind the house. We stayed here for my parents first trip to Maine (they are from the south) and my dad can't stop talking about how incredible it was. I hope to stay here again!

    Alexandra2017-07-30T00:00:00Z
  • Not only is the location lovely, but a master carpenter was clearly involved in the woodwork. Interior decor is nice quality, as are bed linens and towels. The kitchen has more than the listing described, all cooking gear in good order. This would have been a fine stay even at its high price, but for the serial plumbing issues: downstairs toilet clogged, dishwasher failed to clean and seemingly did not drain on first use (better but not really clean on re-wash), then upstairs tub (with copious shower flow) did not keep up, and then on our second day there the upstairs toilet clogged. Self-help was impossible as there was no plunger, and calls to hostess went unreturned; on checking out (by phone, as they were away again), no apology.

  • WOW! You can't get a better view and feel completely secluded. The only challenge we had were logistics (and cost) of getting our rental car back and forth to the island. This is not the hosts fault we should have done more research. We spent most of our time on the deck and exploring this sweet island. Thank you for offering this little slice of heaven to others.

"Tide Rock" is our oceanfront cottage, passed down through several generation. There are three bedrooms with three double beds and one twin bed. Full kitchen, living room with water views, front porch that is perfect for watching the boats sale by.
  • Wonderful get-away right on the bay. Beautiful sunsets over the water (on the east coast!) and a lovely lawn for games and gatherings. We were there after Labor Day, so the summer crowds were absent which made it even more enjoyable for a private family get-together. The weather is always a factor along the Maine coast, and we had sunshine, rain and fog, all within a couple days. But the broad views from inside over the bay were a constant backdrop and connection to the water even when rain kept us in. The house is basic, but has all the kitchen appliances for full meals, which we did at least twice a day for a group of 6.

    Keith2015-09-14T00:00:00Z
  • The location of this house is just amazing! The view from the porch and the extra lawn chairs and swing! out front were bonuses we did not expect. We loved the layout of the house, with stools around the counter for a social dinner prep time, and plenty of seating in the living room and in the dining area. The picture windows provided the most fantastic views of the sunset from inside this cozy cottage. There were two beds in one room, which we did not expect, as I didn’t notice that in the description or in the photos, but we made do. And actually the futon downstairs folded out to a quite comfortable sleeping spot for one friend! This house was just what we were looking for though. A perfect home base for a wedding weekend away!

  • Tide Rock was a beautiful rental and a wonderful place to stay after celebrating my best friends wedding. It was clean and had everything we needed. The location to the water was amazing and a was the perfect place to relax at night. Our only regret was not being able to stay another night to enjoy the location. Wendy was very prompt in her response to a question I had and offered to help in any other way she could. Overall this was a great experience and I would definitely stay here again.

    Jason2016-06-13T00:00:00Z
  • Tide Rock cottage was exquisite - the perfect Maine cottage. Fully equipped, comfortable, internet and the best water view!

  • Wendy was a great host, the home was exactly what we were looking for, the whole weekend couldn't have gone better. We had everything we needed. Wendy and I emailed throughout the weekend, she was always responsive and made sure our stay was as good as it could have been. We will definitely be back, this was the perfect weekend away.

    geoffrey2015-10-04T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay at Tide Rock, Wendy was so accommodating and easy to get into contact with as we prepared for our trip! The view was incredible as well!! There weren't a lot of check out instructions so while that wasn't a negative, I wish I'd confirmed those details prior to the trip (totally on me!!).

  • Tide Rock was great! A lovely, rustic, intimate cottage with sea views, plenty of comfortable space to hang out and all the amenities we needed. It was exactly what we were looking for for a family wedding weekend. Thanks to Wendy for being so responsive and helpful.

  • Everything we expected! Convenient location for wedding we attended. Private road, great frontage, private beach at low tide! A wow experience for us. Thank you!

Very private, quiet house on 6 acres at the edge of the woods on a small beautiful island off Portland, two beaches within walking distance, large yard surrounding the house. Long Island is reached by ferry from Portland many times daily (for ferry information go to www.cascobaylines.com). The house is a 15 minute walk from the Ferry Landing. There is a bus service by Chub's Bus that can be reserved by phone. Golf carts can be rented in advance, they will pick you up at the ferry landing.
Double living room, eat in kitchen, three bedrooms one bathroom upstairs, large porch with dining table, recliners and hammock. House recently painted inside and out, new windows, newly remodeled single bathroom upstairs, new front porch. Maximum 6 people. There is no phone in the house, your cellphone has access to calls and can receive them. There is no internet in the house, the local library, at a two-minute walk distance, has internet and it reaches to the outside of the building at any hour House has no TV, radio and CD player in the living room. Tennis court, basketball court, and playground close by. Five minute walk to the scenic Fowler's beach, ideal for children to play in tidal pools and hunt for crabs, lobsters, and other sealife. Ten minutes to the large (Singing Sands) beach. Both beaches are gorgeous. Deer families visit the yard daily, foxes at night. A perfect hideaway, ideal for a low-key vacation. Great place for cycling, walking, sunset watching, sea-glass hunting, swimming, tennis, sunbathing, low cost lobster dinners (pit in the backyard for cooking). For more information on Long Island, go to http://townoflongisland.us/visitor-information/
It is gorgeous, peaceful, totally relaxing, beautiful beaches, sunsets, wonderful and kind people everywhere around.
  • Long Island is a great place to go, lots of big accessible beaches and nice people - a real small island feel. The host was wonderful, very easy to communicate with and had lots of useful information. The house was comfortable and very well equipped. It had a very "campy" feel, which I'm used to and like, but renters should know that's what they're going to get. Don't forget the bug spray! It's also not directly on a beach, although my favorite beach was only a five minute walk away.

  • Nice private setting. Conveniently located near library, tennis courts, playground, beaches, tide pools, ferry dock. Love the screened in porch! This house worked great for our family of 4 for a week on the island.

  • My family (of four adults and four young children) love the Katalin's house. The island is amazing. It's like going back in time. Slow pace, unplugged, not to mention full of beautiful scenery. The house itself has everything you need, and can accommodate a wide range of groups of different sizes. The back yard is huge and had swings for my boys, myself and my parents to play in. We enjoyed exploring the "forest" behind the house looking for bears. (We saw a fox!) I can't stress the beauty of the screened porch, it never gets an so it's always very cool even on really hot days. We spent lots of time there playing, reading and relaxing in the hammock. The house has everything we needed from a grill, to a useful kitchen, to lobster pots. The house is rustic as described (and shown in the photos) but to us this added to the whole island experience. The house is just 2 blocks from the library/playground /tennis and basketball courts. Close to two awesome beaches. Katalin provided us with a great list of things to do on the island and always got back to us super fast with any questions we had. Long Island is a wonderful, beautiful place full of great people. Katalin's house helped us enjoy this. I would 110% recommend renting the house and would love to return next year. Thank you Katalin!

  • A perfect beach island house, with plenty of character. Great location.

    Marianne2017-08-06T00:00:00Z
  • The house was perfectly located, just a few-minute walk from two beaches and less than a block from the lunch truck serving lobster rolls. Long Island is stunning and a lovely, quiet place to stay. Plus, the hammock on the porch was a terrific part of the experience. I highly recommend reserving a golf cart for your stay—we didn't, and the walk from the ferry to the house with luggage and groceries was quite cumbersome. The house itself was not as well-maintained as we had expected from the photos: the floors were pretty sandy, the refrigerator was at least half-full, and we had to re-wash most of the dishes we took out of the cabinets. It suited our purposes for a weekend, but we wouldn't have wanted to stay there for a full week.

  • The second week of August is a very popular rental week in coastal Maine so we were thrilled to find Katalin's cottage available our desired week and in a great location on Long Island in Casco Bay. My family of 4 had a very comfortable experience. The cottage is a typical old Maine cottage and, as described by others, "campy". This was entirely within our expectations due to the description and photos and is consistent with what we have seen at this price point (we have rented 3 other cottages on Long Island). The kitchen, in particular, is very old but everything was tidy and had everything we needed for cooking. The cottage was very clean. The bedding was freshly laundered. The beds were comfortable and gave us several sleeping options for my husband and I and our two kids. The screened in porch is the cottage's best feature and where we spent most of our time. We only used the fire pit once but it was a nice feature. We rented a golf cart and found this essential although the cottage is technically walking distance to most everything. Katalin's communications were very prompt and she provided several pages of helpful information about the cottage and the community.

  • We loved our stay on Long Island. It is a beautiful island and the beaches and slow pace were just what our family needed. The house was pretty much as described by Katalin and other guests. It suited our purposes of having a quiet, simple holiday and I loved not having a tv or internet for the week. There are some small things that could be attended to to make other guests' stays better: nothing major, small fixes. If you go, be prepared to bring everything you'll need (EVERYTHING) including toilet paper and paper towels- there was 1 roll of tp there when we arrived which was clearly not going to be enough for a week and 6 people! An "emergency" trip to Portland on day 2 had to be scheduled to stock up on basics. We plan to return to the island and next time we will make a meal plan in advance and bring way more food and basics from the get go- when it's a beautiful day for the beach, you really won't want to leave the island for any reason.

    Annika2015-08-23T00:00:00Z
  • This is the second time we were hosted by Katalin and we had a very good time on the island, once again. Her property is close to the two main beaches on the island and also to the Shop and the Wharf!

  • We had a lovely time staying with Jonathan and Robert on Peaks Island. The suite was clean and welcoming, a short walk to town, and only a couple of minutes from the beach. Jonathan reached out almost immediately after our booking to make sure we would have what we needed, and when we arrived there was a handy information sheet with restaurants and phone numbers.

    Jim2016-07-04T00:00:00Z
  • Peaks Island is truly beautiful and Jonathan's private suite is comfortable and well-appointed! We only stayed for one night for a wedding but wish our stay could have been much longer!

Wonderful family cottage. Large deck with gas grill, table with umbrella and lots of chairs, inside porch with cable TV, living room with cable TV, dining room (internet/WIFI) , full kitchen (including all lobster feast needs!), 2 full baths, 4 bedrooms. Large yard bordered by stone wall (and raspberries!). 5 minute walk to both bay and Hussey Sound. 20 minute walk to Ferry, store and restaurants.
Quiet side of island and you can watch everybody walk, bike or drive by. Great for people watching!
  • Pam was extremely welcoming and accommodating! She will pick you up and drop you off from the ferry since the house is a little bit out of town. If you have a bike or rent a golf cart, the distance is really no issue and allowed me to explore the entire island. She gave me a quick tour in her car and brief history of the island upon arrival. Her front porch is very warm and welcoming. The bedroom was upstairs and had a bath right next door. The bed had nice clean soft sheets and Pam provided as many towels as needed for showering. The shower enclosure in the bath was new and had good hot water and pressure. Pam really has a heart of gold so I hate to list negatives, but I want to be honest for future guests. The mattress in the room was quite saggy and the rug laid over more old rugs could definitely scare some away. Both had seen their life expectancy. However, if your not super picky about these things then its a safe and hospitable place to stay and enjoy exploring Peaks!

Located on a small picturesque island off the coast of Portland, Maine, this vacation get away will be one you will never forget!
Comfortably decorated 3 story home with breathtaking water views. A wrap around deck that affords guests outside enjoyment from sunrise to sunset. Conveniently located, it is walking distance to all island amenities, including 3 beaches, 2 general stores, gift shop, playground, retail lobster shack and ferry boat landing. The fully equipped kitchen will allow guests to easily prepare meals. While the island stores offer grocery, sundry items and takeout meals we advice you bring the bulk of your food from the mainland.
Long Island is a friendly, relaxed year round welcoming community. Guests will truly get the sense of what Island living is all about. When you arrive don't be surprised to see Island children jumping in the wake of the boat as it departs. Sitting on the deck having your morning coffee, it's common to see the lobstermen hauling their traps. After a relaxing day, enjoy spectacular sunsets from the comfort of your deck.

  • We had a fantastic time here. I had a week of work to do in Portland and kids and wife crashed here. A great and easy escape from the hustle and bustle of the city each evening. Great ppl on the island. And literally couldn't have been a better set up for kids (playgound w/in view of deck, pool right nearby, multiple sand/shell beaches). We'll def be back. Only downside is house was a bit musty/ dusty. A small price to pay for a great week, though!

  • We had a magical weekend with a group of old friends and their families at this house that is part of a private community on a small, quiet, car-free island. There is VERY little in the way of typical amenities (1 restaurant and just a miniature convenience store), but is an ideal place for checking out with every day life and checking in to family/friend time. It's great for running, walking, exploring, relaxing, reading, chatting and playing. From the community pool, the playground in view from the house, the old-fashioned bowling lanes and arcade games, the gorgeous views, yoga and games on the lawn, and golf-cart treks, this island is a true retreat. The house is beautiful, clean, large, charming and comfortable. A perfect option for families looking to escape, where children can roam free (such a rare and wonderful throwback!), it's a great place to reconnect, relax and have good old-fashioned fun.
