  • We were a group of friends that rented the house over a long-weekend. It is a great place to relax, with great views over the dam and the 15th hole of the golf course. The keen mountain bikers in the group also enjoyed the mountain bike trail in the estate. The table tennis table provided lots of entertainment. The house is a great point from which to explore the Midlands Meander. The house is also very well supplied with everything you need - cutlery, crockery etc. We would definitely recommend a stay here!

  • The house was beautiful and peaceful. The view of the damn was a huge benefit. We had a lovely stay and the domestic helper Sassy was excellent at keeping the house clean and doing the laundry. we would definitely recommend the house. Warwick was a very good host and made sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. very good value for money.

  • This is in no way luxury accommodation, but that is not what we wanted! Sarah makes you feel so welcome. Linen is great for the very cold weather, cleanliness was outstanding and fresh towels where provided on arrival and coffee and rusks, such a treat. Unfortunately I arrived to late and left to early to experience the cafe and wine cellar but it looked very interesting all i wanted was to get into the cafe to browse all the books they had. Thank you Sarah for being a wonderful host

We have eight elegant on suite bedrooms in the main house and a further eight garden rooms in the adjoining new wing. All have period furniture and each room has its own unique character. We have remained true to the ambience of a country home. Some of our rooms have sofa beds and comfortably accommodate children. Most of our bedrooms have balconies, or open into the garden.
The Bend was first developed by the Doney family in 1876. Alfred Doney arrived in South Africa as an indentured coachman and after completing his contract he moved to the Nottingham Road area which then formed part of the district of Weenen. The family first made their home in a cluster of wattle and daub rondavels directly across the river from the present House. The remains of these buildings can still be found together with what appear to be the graves of children. These provide us with a sad record of the hardship that these hardy settlers endured. The present owners met the granddaughter of the family, then in her 80’s when they bought in 1983. She had been granted the usufruct of a portion of the farm when it changed hands in the 1920’s. The next owner was a financier from Johannesburg, a Mr. Montague Simpson. He owned the farms Benmore and Parkmore on the outskirts of Johannesburg, today the heart of Sandton. He bought The Bend in 1926 and initiated a programme of grand design – all the stone outbuildings and the complicated system of drainage were the result of his energies. He favoured the breeding of Ayreshire cattle and Landrace pigs. These animals were so highly regarded by him that the pig sties had Oregon pine cottage pane windows! His cattle were probably the only cows in South Africa to be subjected to “orthodontics” – Montague required that their horns conform exactly to the breed specifications and the rings that were used to shape the horns during feeding can still be seen in the area behind the Chapel. The pond in front of the house provide the opportunity for him to parade his animals before a suitably admiring audience – the animals would be led around this feature while his guests sipped G&T’s and Pimms in true colonial splendor. Mrs. Simpson was an avid Flyfisher woman – but could not cast! She enjoyed the services of a Gilly whose job it was to take the fly and walk downstream from the bridge until he had taken up all the line. The fly was then flung into the current and Mrs. Simpson gracefully reeled it in. We do not know how successful this method of trout fishing was, but it served to encourage her to remove herself from the glamour of her life in Johannesburg on occasion. Many of the oldest members of the community learnt to swim in the pond as children. It is easy to picture a way of life on The Bend that was as close to the “Out of Africa” experience as it could be in this colony of Great Britain – no wonder that to this day it is still known as “the Last Outpost”. Montague relinquished ownership of The Bend in 1956. The next 27 years were relatively uneventful and a number of farmers in turn held the property. Little further construction took place and the pace of life reflected that of serious commercial dairymen and sheep farmers. The situation changed in 1983 – 2 enthusiastic young people, Jose Manuel Holgado (a mining engineer) and Sheila Thornhill Holgado (a language student and teacher) took over together with their young family. Things reverted to the days of heady construction. Together they designed their ideal home and set about making it a reality. Our preference would have been to restore rather than rebuild. However as the original homestead had been built from the redundant 1st World War Officer’s mess in Durban it proved impossible to save the old house. The internal doors were saved, as were the Oregon pine floor boards. The latter became the magnificent staircase you see on arrival. The workmanship of the staircase, the panelling and the ceilings are a monument to the skill of Ron Fourie who spent 3 years helping the Holgados’ achieve their dream. What you see around you today is the work of rather bemused farm labourers. The creation became a source of pride to all who worked on it and we all took time out to stand back and admire each small step towards completion. The story of Dawid Somfuso Makhaye is evidence of the benefit of living in this area. Dawid joined the staff of The Bend in 1918. He served with the Allied Forces in Egypt during the 2nd World War. At the age of 98 he could be seen riding his equally mature stallion Captain around the district. Dawid died at The Bend in the arms of his family at the age of 105. The Holgados’ turned The Bend into one of the most productive farms in the area: 200 hectares under irrigation, 400 beef cows, a 220 unit Charolais stud, seed potatoes, a million seedlings of cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli and lastly, 2000 Dohne/Border Leicester sheep! The farming activities gave rise to much satisfaction and an almost equal degree of anxiety. The wisdom of Mr. Bunty Christie from whom the Holgados’ had bought proved true – to make a small fortune out of farming, you only have to start with a large one! We loved every minute of it. By 1996 the children had grown up and family circumstances led to Jose’s return to Spain. It was time to rethink the nature of The Bend and its significance for the Holgado family. This was the moment when we decided to change direction and to open The Bend for the enjoyment of a wider audience. We initiated the development of the Residential component and established the Country House. Sheila was confident that this would succeed as The Bend had a long tradition of hospitality. The furniture and artwork that are an integral part of the atmosphere of The Bend has been lovingly collected over the past 40 years. It reflects the interests and travels of the family and we enjoy sharing it with all who enjoy what The Bend has to offer.

A charming little cottage right on the banks of the Mooi River. Drift off to sleep to the sound of tinkling water. Fly-fishing, canoeing and swimming all right on your doorstep. Bar. Electric blanket. No TV.
Much loved family home situated on the banks of the Mooi River in the KZN Midlands. Braille Aisling means Dream Home and that is what it is. Animals are very much a part of this space and welcome guests with open paws.
We are at the base of the Kamberg Road. Access to this beautiful area with its stunning scenery, fly-fishing dams and rivers and bushman rock art.
  • Beautiful surrounds, private and peaceful next to the river. Accurate description of setting and facilities - beautifully decorated. Was everything we wanted from our week away from the hustle. Dee and her kids were very friendly (thanks for accommodating us on our late arrival) and Nugget and Ruby was friendly companions. Access to the river with the boat and fishing rods was a nice added bonus. Thanks again!

  • Dee made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. We were taken back when we first saw the breathtaking view of the river around the back of the property! The room has the perfect balance of charming decor and only the essential items one might need, less is more (which I love) and just what we needed in order to feel destressed and uncluttered coming from the busy City. It really is a lovely spot, we're so greatful that Dee shared her space with us. Highly recommended.

  • We had the most wonderful time at the Boat House. Exactly what we were after, very relaxing and peaceful. Had a great time canoeing and fishing in the river. Dee was the perfect host and looked after us very well, as did the dogs! This place is a little bit of paradise. If you are looking to get away from it all and switch off this is the place!

  • A magical little getaway -such an awesome surprise! Thank you so much Dee and Sam for making us feel so welcome and relaxed. Tastefully decorated, absolutely charming private cottage with all the amenities to make our stay easy & comfortable, perfect private river front, perfect room, perfect relaxation. The location in Rosetta is a bonus - the Midlands meander on our doorstep and we still felt hidden away. We hope to stay again soon! Love to Nugget and Madame Ruby for hanging out with us and showing us the river :)

Come and stay in our beautiful thatched home in the foothills of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, surrounded by open countryside and mountains with the unspoilt Mooi River running at the bottom of our sloping view site, where a genuine warm friendly welcome awaits you and nothing is too much trouble to make you comfortable. One of the benefits of running our self catering business is the pleasure we derive from meeting new people and the satisfaction from knowing that they have enjoyed their stay.
One of the best things about our guesthouse is the view. We are uniquely placed on a hill above the Mooi River where our visitors can take in the sights and sounds of the Kwazulu Natal Midlands. Not only is this a bird-lovers paradise thanks to the close proximity of a wetland but there are also a number of buck living on our property which can be seen making an appearance at certain times of the day from the thick bush below. Guests are welcome to explore the property and take a path down to and along the river.

The house offers everything you need as a kitchen, living area including fire place (wood available), and bathroom. Last but certainly not least is the amazing view on the Drakensbergen. A perfect place for a stopover or -even better- a longer stay:)

The house itself is well equipped and provides a great base of operations for the meander or just for relaxing - it has great views of the Drakensberg, the Mooi River and a very nice fire place. Alan and Christine are amazing hosts making sure that you have everything you need to make your vacation a success. We will definitely be back sometime soon!

We are situated on the beautiful Midlands Meander, with many places to visit nearby. We have a stunning view of the Drakensburg, stretching from Giants Castle to Champagne Castle. • The flat is in a lovely, quiet neighborhood, yet only a couple minutes drive into town. Everything was exactly as expected from the details on the listing. There's a little bar fridge, thoughtfully stocked with a little jug of milk for tea and coffee purposes. We had a comfortable stay, would definitely recommend.

  • We were very happy with our stay at Misty Mountain, the rooms were spacious and very comfortable. We were able to easily explore the Midlands from this base. The Nottingham Road area is a favourite of ours and we love exploring the winding road and its hidden treasures. Di and Wade were lovely hosts and kept us informed about local events over the weekend.

    Tarryn2017-08-07T00:00:00Z
  • Di's place is absolutely beautiful and the location is perfect as its close to all the places we wanted to visit during our very brief stay. The room was airy, spacious and had everything we needed to make our one night stay super comfortable. She has a great eye for detail so you can expect beautiful finishings and a very clean space on arrival.

  • Very spacious, modern and tastefully decorated house, with a fully equipped kitchen, green space, in a very quiet, safe and leafy neighbourhood. There is a lovely cafe nearby, 2 nice restaurants, a supermarket and gas station - everything you need.

    Marnie2017-01-06T00:00:00Z
  • Tania's home is amazing! We had such a great stay there. She went through great lengths to make the house as homey as possible. The neighbours were very friendly when we took walks. Overall, we had a great time and will definitely recommend her place to other people. The person that almost ruined the trip for us was the security guard (the one that was working on the day shift on the 27th of December). He was very rude and extremely impolite. When we called him out on it, he just laughed at us and walked away. Very unprofessional. Additionally, he didn't give us directions to get to the place so we had to find the house ourselves.

    Jade2016-12-28T00:00:00Z
  • Great location , spacious clean modern home with great views of the midlands .

    Sachin2016-12-23T00:00:00Z
  • This venue is excellently located in the Midlands. Gowrie Village is close to all amenities and restaurants, including the Beirfassl, the Spar, a golf course, great MTB'ing and other places of interest. The house itself is modern, light, with every need or want from a home catered for. Best of all, each room has an ensuite bathroom, so there was no need to share with anyone else - ladies, you know how important this is! Tania, thanks for being a wonderful host, and making sure that all our questions / queries were answered.

Situated 29kms from the popular Nottingham Road, our beautiful farm house is a sprawling home with a fully equipped modern kitchen, many fridges and deep chest-freezers, three large lounges, a large dining area, a (professional) billiard room (aka man cave) with an aviation themed bar, a cinema room that seats 12, a relaxing courtyard with water feature and large spacious outside areas to roam.
We have large televisions scattered throughout the house/rooms and all equipped with individual DSTV decoders (activated upon request). Several cows, our two donkeys (Nicky & Iggy) will be seen grazing in the outer perimeter of the farmstead, protected by an electric fence - we have several species of buck roaming the farmlands. Nothing but farmland surrounds you, only nature breaks the silence and the nighttime sky is filled with stars you could almost touch. In addition to the farmstead amenities above; there is also another braai area and undercover outside dining space in the courtyard, complete with pizza oven. This is a luxury home with interior decoration and signature art pieces throughout, and fireplaces in many of the communal rooms. The 3 bedroom cottage detached from the main home can be rented out separately. If you¹re visiting theMidlands, looking to get closer to nature but with all lifestyle comforts, or if you are a family with children schooling at Michaelhouse or Hilton - this location is for you! (If you require additional security for peace of mind we are happy to arrange this) There is a full-time maid on-site, maids quarters if you would like to bring employees with you, and another maid available for hire if need be. There are also two garden boys on-site full-time.
The farm is situated 29kms from the popular Nottingham Road, 15kms from Howick, and is on the same road as the much-loved Piggly Wiggly Country Village.

  • What an amazing gem in the Midlands. The pictures do not do this beautiful home justice and the gardens and views are breathtaking. Perfect for families with kids of all ages. Busi the housekeeper was fabulous as well and made sure the Aga stove was kept hot throughout the weekend. What a magical place, we loved every minute and will most definitely be back!!

  • Wonderful home in beautiful Midlands Meander. Spacious, comfortable property with lots of character and lovely garden, absolutely great place to relax, many places to explore nearby with easy access to the highway. We have stayed in several properties around the world and this is one of my favourite places, would love to stay here again.

  • We had an amazing time in the Midlands. The farm house is so beautiful! The best part is the Aga in the kitchen - the nights are still quite cold and it was the perfect place to cook dinner and have some wine. A beautiful setting and Busi the housekeeper looked after us well.

    Alexandra2016-09-23T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay at your truely gorgeous farmhouse. It is the perfect blend of calm simplicity & elegant warmth. The beautifully kept grounds with hidden surprises were a favorite with our dogs & kids. The inviting kitchen with its Aga stove and huge lounge fireplace were our favorite hangouts when the evening mists rolled in. All the welcome touches such as comfy beds, lovely linen, slouchy couches & plenty of cozy spots to curl up with a book or good company, makes all the difference to a holiday haven that you don't want to leave! Busi was always subtly available and a cheerful help whenever we needed her. We were amazed at how central we were to everywhere in the Midlands that we wanted to visit. We will definitely return as soon as we can! Thank you so much for Sharing your farm with us.

    Kevin2016-10-02T00:00:00Z
  • Victoria made our stay a truly memorable one. There was constant communication and Victoria always made herself available for any questions we had. The farm house is truly amazing, the house itself is so comfortable with all amenities and we absolutely fell in love with the kitchen and the coal stove. The location is perfectly in between Nottingham road and Dargle valley and the scenery is spectacular. We have not relaxed like that in ages. Thank you to Victoria, Mark and Busi for a great few days away and for taking care of us, if you'll have us we will definitely be back!

    Dhiloshin2017-09-03T00:00:00Z
  • You couldn't ask for a better host. Sarah and Simon went above and beyond their call of duty to make us feel welcome and comfortable. Nothing was too much trouble for them and they provided us with a lots of useful information. they are so friendly and welcoming. Their location is perfect, especially for first timers to the Midlands. I would definitely recommend this guest house. The only thing is that there is no cooking facilities in the guest house BUT Sarah and Simon have advised that they are going to add a oven / stove very soon so then it will be perfect. You share their scullery so it's not totally independent but this is reflected on their description of the house as they mention the guest house is attached to their home. Saying that, I would have absolutely no hesitation to return, it is a lovely, clean and comfortable home with all the finishing touches you could ask for. The hosts are flexible and so accommodating which made staying there a pleasure. I can't wait to go back.

  • Gail and Phillip were really friendly and allowed us to bring our Yorkie with. They left some groceries for us in the fridge, like yoghurt, milk, honey and jam. It was a really kind gesture. I would note that the flat is above the garage, up some steep stairs. While not a problem for most people, with elderly people or very young may be a concern. I would definitely visit again. • A charming house in a charming and very secure village. Rae was so helpful, providing easy directions and suggesting gorgeous restaurants and cafes. The house was spotlessly clean, and so well maintained, and the setting is just magical. Overall, a wonderful stay, with not a single complaint!

  • This is the place if you need a relaxing, rejuvenating escape!:) We could not meet Rae in person but she was available for us 24/7 on phone. The listing showed it to be only for stay but the cottage is fully functional, much beautiful than the pictures, cozy and has a very kind and helpful house-helper! The house is strategically located and has craft-markets at walking distance. The route is super scenic and one can go for long drives and just not get over this mini Swiss kind of place:). The only thing which did not work out was a walk inside the lush green meadows of the golf (URL HIDDEN) is suppose to have a visitors pass issued ,what I gather, from the host which we did not have. But then , there is so much to see and explore that one can absolutely overlook this:)
