Cave
“Milatos cave is really known for a drama which unfolded with Turkish invaders in February, 1823. Early in 1823, the residents of the surrounding area took refuge in the Militos Cave to hide from the Turkish troops of Hasan Pasha, who were plundering and pillaging Lassithi. The Cretan rebel leaders, with a minimal force of about 150 men, fought the Pasha's large army in and around the cave in a brave defense of the 2,700 local inhabitants. The fighting went on from February 3 to 15, until the besieged, suffering from extreme hunger and thirst, dared a heroic, but devastating escape. The defending warriors were slaughtered, many of the older ones trampled to death by oncoming Cavalry; the captured children were sold into slavery, and 18 priests were brutally killed or burned to death.”

“The monastery was founded at the end of the 16th century by Markos Papadopoulos, who also bequeathed it great wealth, enough for the upkeep of twelve monks. Notary documents confirm its peak during the 17th century as they mention the multitude of its transactions with other monasteries or individuals. Despite its destruction by the Turks during the revolution of 1821, it continued to function, renovating a part of its buildings towards the end of the 19th century, until 1930 when it was deemed soluble. The monastery was reconstituted in 1955-56, while during the 1990s it was restored in its entirety. The building complex develops at a gradient because of the sloping ground and forms around two courtyards. Around the smaller of the two, the south one, where the main entrance is found, are workshops and ancillary spaces, such as the olive-press, the wine treadle and the stables. In the central courtyard is the large catholicon dedicated to the Holy Trinity, renovated in 1880-81, and the chapel of St. Lazarus, possibly of a funerary nature. Around the catholicon in two-storey buildings are the cells and the remaining main spaces of the monastery. In the catholicon are preserved noteworthy icons of the Cretan School, of the 17th century, with those of the Holy Trinity, the Lady of the Angels and Pentecost, which were all painted by the hand of the same anonymous painter, being the most important.”

“The Havgas Gorge is the only gorge in the Lassithi Plateau. The route is relatively smooth and accessible up to the point “Neraidokolympos”, where you will find a large round boulder at the bottom of the gorge, which makes access to the rest of the gorge very difficult. The gorge carries the water from Katharo to the Lasithi Plateau. Therefore, make sure you are well informed about the weather conditions before deciding to cross it, since it carries a lot of water during periods of rainfall. The canal starts close to the lake reservoir of St. George, which is located very close to the village of Agios Konstantinos. It ends in the plateau of Katharo, yet it is accessible up to the point where the boulder blocks the rest of the route.”

“If you like snails and you are lucky, order snails with weat. A traditional dish , very nutritional and healthy. Delicious too. Otherwise everything else Nora cooks is like mum's food. It is also nice if you like eggs in the morning and cheese made from Nora's brother in law.”
