Discover convict-built Darlinghurst Gaol with a historian

Go back in time with this historian-led walk around Old Darlinghurst Gaol, a former Australian prison that was built by convicts in the 1820s. • We’ll visit the site of the first public hanging in Sydney (10,000 people reportedly showed up to witness the notorious event), see a women’s prison cellblock, and pass a former chapel. • We’ll also imagine the lives of the prison’s famous felons, including bushrangers, serial killers, and eccentrics. The poet Henry Lawson frequented the gaol in the early 1900s for his disorderly conduct and non-payment of debts. His poem, One Hundred and Three, is believed to refer to his time in the gaol; the title is a nod to his prison number. • You’ll also learn the purpose of the tunnel under the complex, which operated as a prison for more than 70 years before being converted into a college. We’ll end our 90-minute walk at The Rusty Rabbit, a cafe where I’m happy to answer your questions, sing a song or two and share more scandalous stories about Sydney’s secret seedy past.

I’ll sing rare long-lost convict-era ballads that bring their tragic stories to life. You’ll leave with new insights into the unique cultural identity of Australia and its history.

Glow-worm tour and Spotlighting

Age 7 and up. Good mobility needed! An unforgettable, educational experience visiting the unique glow worms after a short walk through World Heritage listed forest and rainforest. We will meet at sunset, spending a little time introducing ourselves and safety briefing. Then as the stars begin to appear, with the use of torches, we begin our 20 minute walk to the overhanging cave and waterfall, with the possibility of seeing our amazing nocturnal wildlife. Possums, gliders, owls and bats to name just a few. Another truly amazing encounter, only within the first 3 weeks of summer is the chance of fireflies. We will spend 30 minutes to an hour in the overhang, behind the waterfall learning about these incredible glowing larvae and why they glow. The track is mostly in good condition, though there are some stairs and heavily eroded sections therefore a medium fitness level is required. Glow worms are extremely sensitive to light and sound so we will ask our clients to respect this and there will be a 5 minute educational talk around this before entering the cave. Smoking is strictly prohibited on the tour. Torches are supplied for everyone on this experience. Minimal impact is very high on our list of priorities and instructions will be given on how to achieve this. We ask our clients to adhere to these rules.

We will take you on a moderate/hard 90min bushwalk via some amazing view points, small waterfalls to the base of a big waterfall in Jamison Valley. The hardest part is optional to skip. We provide a fresh picnic lunch (refer to picture) where we all connect. After lunch we check out the Three Sister Rock formations and many other beautiful stops too. Meet the Byron Bay Surf School staff at a Carpark in Town in Byron Bay where the waves are best for lessons. We will fit you out with a wetsuit and suitable sized surfboard. We are one of the only surf schools licensed to teach surf lessons in Byron Bay. Our fully-qualified instructors first take you through stretches on the sand and step you through our special 'pop-up technique' in a small and personal group of 8 people maximum. Then it's time to grab your board and go surfing! Our instructors stay with you in the water, guiding you on to perfect peeling waves and helping you stand up and ride the waves of your dreams, all the way to shore. You will not know you could smile so much or be more exhilarated than when you ride your first waves. We offer the most water/actual surfing time (approx 2hrs), 2.5hr experience. Farm tour

During your 1.5hr walk around the farm, you will learn about award winning free range heritage breed pigs and get to feed them. You will see our award winning lamb, and the gorgeous hairy Highland cows. Redleaf farm also has chickens, ducks, geese and peafowl, alpacas, goats and a miniature donkey who loves to have a cuddle. You will learn about ethically raising animals and the process of meat production with provenance. We will show you around our farm and animals, ending with our special swimming hole, and kids will enjoy the log 'climbing fort' and tyre swing by the creek. We encourage private groups to make a visit to Redleaf a special and memorable experience. Other things to note It can be cold in the highlands and weather can change fast. Please be prepared with sensible shoes (mud boots are always a good idea) and a jacket. There can be many hazzards on a farm, so please follow directions and stay alert. During winter months my 4 children have multiple sporting commitments, so I am often unable to do tours on weekends - busy driving rugby players, hockey players and xc skiers around the country!
