Breakfast Spot
“You don't have to travel all the way west for chicken and waffles. Or if you're travelling from the west coast we are still certain you'll enjoy Kuzzo's and it'll remind you of home. This hip breakfast place serves breakfast for lunch and dinner. Don't eat meat like us we urge you to try the lip smacking grits, hearty harvest bowl, buttery waffles, any of their desserts or other vegetarian options.”

Bakery
“The owner, April Anderson, is in the kitchen everyday at 5:00am preparing every aspect of her baked goods fresh. And when it’s closing time, leftovers are donated to the homeless. Her spot is on the street with the most black-owned businesses in the country, and it’s so refreshingly diverse. You walk in and it’s like the Reading Rainbow in there. Her red velvet cake is my favorite—she uses beet juice instead of dye, and even a beet hater like myself was proven wrong.”

“If you're coming to Metro Detroit in the fall, I'd recommend going to one of the local Cider Mills. It wasn't until I moved to Florida for a few years that I really appreciated these Michigan treats. My favorite Cider Mill is Yates. It's about 30 min away from my Airbnb, but it's worth the drive if you're visiting later in the year. The Cider Mill has something for everyone. Walking trails, fresh Apple Cider, warm Cinnamon Donuts, pumpkins, a petting zoo, and Donut Ice Cream Sundaes! Yes - I said DONUT ICE CREAM SUNDAES!! I really enjoy going to the Cider Mill. They're usually busiest on the Weekends, but it's a fun and friendly afternoon filled with people walking their dogs, feeding the ducks in the creek, eating sweets, and seeing the beautiful fall colors of Michigan. ”

Bakery
“75 years old, run by the same family that founded it (almost all women, as well), it is the uncontested crown jewel of donut places in the area. Open 24 hours, but go early or late at night to snap up the best stuff, still warm. My personal favorites are the blueberry sourdough donuts, and the glazed donut holes, but all the basics are there (no apple fritters, unfortunately) and are always undeniably the best. A remarkably diverse clientele (as in, Birmingham old money, neighborhood families, hipsters, and the homeless) is evidence that this place is the real deal. Whatever that means.”

“Don't forget about Dessert! The Detroit Cookie Company is one of my go-to Dessert places. I'd definitely recommend their cookie ice cream sandwich. They're definitely not the cheapest cookies, but they are some of the best in Metro Detroit! ”
