Your guide to Padstow

Introduction

For a tiny north Cornwall fishing town, Padstow packs a big reputation. Its modest network of narrow streets has become a foodie destination, bustling with upscale restaurants, bistros, cafés, and tearooms, and serving some of the best locally caught seafood in the country. A string of coves once favored by smugglers now makes for cosy retreats all along this part of the Atlantic shore, while the beaches of Constantine Bay, Harlyn, and Polzeath offer some of the best surfing in Britain. As if all of that weren’t enough, the town is surrounded by a sweep of countryside tailor-made for tranquility. From the serene marshlands of the Camel River estuary, with its bevy of birdlife, to the bracing beauty of the South West Coast Path, this stretch of Cornwall is far more than just a gastronomic getaway.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Padstow

Cornwall enjoys some of the best weather in Britain, as well as the warmest waters. Summer temperatures can average 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Padstow is well sheltered, thanks to its snug position on the western side of the estuary, so it doesn’t suffer from the wind as much as other coastal towns. Having said that, this is still an oceanic climate, so rain will always be a factor. It’s worth having some warm clothing and waterproof layers whatever time of year you arrive. Winters are mild, averaging 50 degrees, and you’ll definitely want to bring an umbrella in springtime and fall.

Top things to do in Padstow

Padstow Harbour

Surrounded by a cluster of cottages, cafes, and quayside inns, the harbour has been a trading port since the Middle Ages, and is still the heart of the town. People gather here every day to see the catch come in. This is also a great place to fish for crabs.

Camel Trail

Running for 18 miles along a former railway line, this comfortable cycling and walking trail offers stunning views of the estuary on the way to the busy market town of Wadebridge, then winds through woodland to Bodmin and beyond to the famous Bodmin Moor.

Port Isaac

Located a little further east along the coast, this pretty 14th-century fishing village is a historic gem, its houses built in the traditional Cornish style from slate and granite. Don’t miss a visit to Squeezy Belly Alley, one of the narrowest streets in Britain.
