Your guide to Palm Jumeirah

Welcome to Palm Jumeirah

Palm Jumeirah is an iconic collection of human-made islands in the shape of a gigantic palm tree, with two rows of luxe oceanfront homes on each of its 17 fronds. Work started in 2001, and the first residents arrived in 2007, making this a thoroughly modern resort. Home to a dizzying array of high-end restaurants and souped-up supercars, Palm Jumeirah is where the shimmer of glass high-rises meets the glint of the Persian Gulf.

The region is home to a mix of international residents, but there are still plenty of ways to soak up some local history, from spice-filled souks to the Saruq Al-Hadid Archaeological Museum. Adrenaline junkies are well catered for here, whether skydiving above Dubai’s world-famous skyline or riding the glittering waves in a glamorous speedboat. Families can join in the fun at the world’s largest waterpark with a kilometre of beach and extensive interactive play museum OliOli.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Palm Jumeirah

Whether you’re venturing out into the magical Arabian desert or staying within the pristine development and marvelling at the city’s collection of skyscrapers, be prepared for Dubai’s renowned heat. In the height of summer between June and September, extremely hot and humid conditions can be a considerable challenge for the uninitiated.

The winter months bring cooler temperatures and more visitors, so expect crowds and queues at in-demand locations between November and March. The mercury dips at night — this is especially true for desert excursions — so pack an extra layer to stave off the chill. It’s also worth remembering a light scarf or jacket when you head out, as virtually all indoor spaces have air conditioning — sundresses and shorts are unlikely to cut it in the Mall of the Emirates — and modest dress is expected, and respectful, at some local attractions.

Top things to do in Palm Jumeirah

Kite Beach

Just minutes from Palm Jumeirah, Kite Beach isn’t just for wind worshippers. Locals and visitors alike are drawn to this stretch of coastline in the late afternoon sun to play beach volleyball, get out on the water in kayaks, and watch the colourful display of kite surfers. The family-friendly expanse of sand is home to an abundance of food outlets for dinners with views of the towering Burj Al Arab.

Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary

There’s an unexpected pocket of nature in the heart of the urban sprawl. Take a break from the supercars and skyscrapers and make the short journey to Dubai Creek Harbour, where birdwatchers will be in their element among the lagoons and lush vegetation. The flamingos tend to be the centre of attention, but between 150 and 200 migratory bird species touch down at this UNESCO site.

The Walk at Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR)

Hopping from high-end shop to sleek boutique can make visitors feel air conditioned-out. But shopping in Dubai isn’t all vast indoor malls. Al fresco promenade the Walk opened in 2008 to immediate popularity, attracting crowds for leisurely open-air brunches while admiring shoppers passing by in their finery.
