Home in Hafnarfjörður
Design Cottage Close to Icelandic Countryside & Reykjavik
Step into one of the oldest homes in town, dating from 1884. Curated by the owners of the design studio Reykjavík Trading Co., The Garden Cottage has been completely remodeled to provide a unique feeling, with a lot of the furniture handmade or meticulously crafted and selected from their travels to California, Scandinavia & Mexico. The land behind The Garden Cottage is home to their designed greenhouse, communal garden, chickens and their most recent addition, The Shed which is their workshop / shop where you can visit for a coffee, buy pieces or see their process of making objects. Curated by the owners & designers of Reykjavík Trading Co. (an Icelandic / California homeware company) the Garden Cottage is their first project of creating a home space for guests to experience a unique & cozy feeling while visiting Iceland. The bottom floor of the 1884 built home has been completely remodeled for guests. Everything in the home has been either made by hand by R.T.Co. or selected from their collection of preferred products & appliances. Anthony Bacigalupo & Ýr Káradóttir, the owners of The Garden Cottage, live & work in the separate upper part of the historic home & their R.T.Co. workshop is located in the back of the garden for guests to visit, learn about the pieces being crafted, or just to have a cup of coffee. We wanted to create a place for guests to experience "slow living" & create a special stay. Having designed spaces for hotels, cafes, bars we decided to put our inspiration & collection into this project & build something completely one-of-a-kind in Iceland. The Garden Cottage includes: - Fresh free-range eggs from the hens in garden - Bosch & Smeg appliances - Aeropress & grinder for coffee - Art pieces by a selection of Icelandic artists - Simple white noise machines with USB charging ports - King & Queen-sized Simba mattress with luxury down pillows & duvets - Wifi & Bluetooth Speaker - Backyard Filson horseshoe set - Weber Smokey Joe BBQ - Yoga mat upon request - Conveniently located across the road from the town's main bus terminal which will take you to Reykjavík & beyond For families: - Stokke Tripp Trapp high chair & Stokke cradle upon request - Bugaboo stroller upon request - BloomBaby lounger chair upon request Note: By law Iceland is requiring all Airbnb's to register their property legally to keep quality, standards & ethics high. Most properties are not registered. Our registration number is HG-00003324 Our guests have the whole bottom house to themselves, with a selection of curated magazines, books & products from R.T.Co. & other designers. The home was built in 1884 & we have been remodeling & bringing back the style it once was but also bringing back the garden & farm style that was once so prominent back in the day. We believe in hospitality to the fullest which sadly doesn't exist anymore in places. Since we live on the property we can answer any questions you have or have you in for a coffee if you need help deciding your journey in Iceland. The cottage is in the oldest part of Hafnarfjörður, a small harbor town. There are great farm-to-table restaurants, bakeries, live music, artist studios and swimming pools nearby. It’s conveniently located across the road from the town’s bus terminal. The house has three stories but is broken into two flats- we live on the upper floors with our children with separate driveway and front door- but we are here for anything you need or to have a coffee in the greenhouse! Our little town can be easily walked around & explored. Shuttle stops for airport & Blue Lagoon are 3 minutes walk next to the ocean & the bus terminal into Reykjavík is close as well.

Your guide to Reykjavík

All About Reykjavík

The capital and largest city in Iceland, Reykjavík, is a study in contrasts. At once modern and traditional, daring and modest, it’s now a place where natural geothermal baths are a common social gathering space alongside the hip, barista-helmed cafes that line Laugavegur street. Food runs the gamut here as well, with restaurants plating up everything from salted cod and locally-raised lamb to fresh skyr yogurt served traditional-style — with sugar, cream, and bilberries.

From its seat on the country’s southwest shore, Reykjavík serves as a natural gateway to outdoor exploration. Whale-watching boats ply the Faxaflói Bay in search of orcas, dolphins, and humpbacks, while just 20 minutes from downtown, the Álftanes peninsula resonates with the calls of migrating birds. In winter, darkened heaths outside the city offer undisturbed views of the Northern Lights. Reykjavík is also a frequent base camp for expeditions to Iceland’s majestic national parks, glaciers, and active volcanoes like the Geldingadalur, which lies just an hour’s drive from the city.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Reykjavík

The best time to stay in an apartment in Iceland is usually in the summer, when the weather is at its most pleasant. During this time, Reykjavík becomes a hub for events, concerts, and festivals, like the Secret Solstice Music Fest in June, or the Reykjavík Culture Night in August. The sunny weather also encourages outdoor exploration, from hiking through the Heiðmörk Nature Reserve to visiting the ducks at peaceful Lake Tjörnin.

With fewer people in town during winter, day trips to nearby spots such as the popular Hallgrímskirkja Church or the snow-ringed thermal pools of the Blue Lagoon are ideal for spending the cooler days away. The winter season is also the best time for viewing the Northern Lights outside town, a sight that draws visitors from all over the world each year. Autumn and spring months are also lovely times to visit, with plenty of bars and restaurants lighting up the central Laugavegur street at night, a splendid spot for visitors to enjoy a late night meal.

Top things to do in Reykjavík

Nauthólsvík Geothermal Beach

There are hundreds of geothermal pools in greater Reykjavík, but there’s only one geothermal beach: Nauthólsvík. This human-made lagoon mixes warm geothermal water into a partially-enclosed section of the sea, creating a unique — and sometimes bracing — experience for swimmers and waders. In summer, colourful beach blankets dot the golden sands.

Red Hills on horseback

Riding horseback near Reykjavík usually means riding an Icelandic — a small, spirited horse that lives only in Iceland. Their unique tölt gait, in which one foot always touches the ground, makes for smooth riding through the brilliant red hills of the Elliðaárhraun lava fields.

Wool gathering

Icelandic wool is prized for being tough on the outside and soft on the inside — a combination that makes Iceland’s iconic knit sweaters (called lópapeysas) an enduring winter essential. Mosfellsbær, 30 minutes east of Reykjavík, is the best place to experience the history of the wool industry, but you’ll also find shops along Laugavegur selling locally-knit sweaters, blankets, and yarn.
