Your guide to Casablanca

Welcome to Casablanca

Casablanca has grown to become Morocco’s largest, most modern city. The hotspots of Fez and Marrakech might be more of a tourist destination, but this is what makes Casablanca all the more intriguing. It’s not trying to impress and cater to visitors; it’s a working city with an authentic personality of its own.

Casablanca is studded with gorgeous Art Deco buildings, boulevards lined with French patisseries, and genuinely breathtaking sights, such as the Hassan II Mosque, one of the largest in Africa and staggering in scale. There are excellent beaches and delicious seafood around the Corniche region, haggling practice to be undertaken at the Medina market, ancient treasures at the Abderrahman Slaoui Museum, and excellent people-watching possibilities in the Arab League Park. Casablanca is an exciting, vibrant city to explore.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Casablanca

There really isn’t a bad time to come and stay in a Casablanca apartment. It’s warm and welcoming throughout the year. Sitting on the Atlantic coast, it’s not quite as steamy as other Moroccan cities. The summer months heat up and it can get crowded on the beach, but the chances of rain are slim. Things are still pleasantly warm during the winter months, with greater chances for rain showers, but this is the ideal time to explore all those winding Medina streets and delightful souks. The large Casa Arts Festival, with music, dance acts, and films celebrating the city, takes place in July. This is also when the excellently named Jazzablanca jazz festival occurs. September sees the popular L’Boulevard music festival, featuring a popular “battle of the bands” competition where local acts hope to gain national recognition.

Top things to do in Casablanca

Hassan II Mosque

You can’t miss it. The 210-metre-tall minaret on the top of this vast, opulent mosque will prove to be a handy landmark when exploring Casablanca. But a trip to this incredible building is essential for every visitor. Built to a massive scale on a rocky outcrop on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, it is truly a wonder of the world. Open to Muslims and non-Muslims alike, there’s a daily English-language tour, but make sure you give yourself enough time to explore the incredible craftsmanship and intricate carving.

Abderrahman Slaoui Museum

This museum contains a fascinating collection of artworks, antiques, jewellery, and various curiosities, all possessed by ardent collector Abderrahman Slaoui during the last century. It’s an eclectic mix featuring ancient cosmetic bottles rubbing shoulders with Victorian-era travel posters and wondrous fish sculptures. The cafe is also a great place to grab a mint tea.

Derb Ghallef

Want to bag yourself a bargain? The Derb Ghallef Flea Market is one of the biggest permanent secondhand spots in the whole country. Antiques, books, jewellery, furniture: You’ll see everything and more on offer at low, low prices. The nearby souk is also an excellent spot for a delicious tagine and other local delicacies.
