“Il Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana, noto anche come il Palazzo della Civiltà del Lavoro o semplicemente Colosseo Quadrato è uno dei simboli dell’EUR, quartiere di Roma, ed è una delle icone architettoniche del Novecento romano (Architettura Razionalista). Fu voluto da Benito Mussolini, a immagine del vero Colosseo; infatti, per sottolineare questa volontà, la facciata ha 6 file di archi che, a loro volta, sono composte da 9 archi ciascuna proprio come le lettere di Benito (6) e Mussolini (9). Il Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana fu costruito come parte dell’Esposizione Universale di Roma del 1942 (la cui sigla ha dato il nome al quartiere stesso). Nel Luglio del 1937 venne bandito un concorso nazionale per la seconda delle quattro principali costruzioni permanenti dell’Esposizione Universale di Roma in occasione del ventennale fascista. Il palazzo doveva ospitare la mostra della civiltà italiana, ed in seguito trasformarsi in museo permanente della civiltà italiana da cui la famosa iscrizione leggibile sulla sommità dell’edificio: “Un popolo di poeti di artisti di eroi di santi di pensatori di scienziati di navigatori di trasmigratori”.”
