Your guide to Santorini

All about Santorini

The instant calm induced by the azure waters lapping against Santorini’s dramatic cliffs makes this Greek getaway one of the most coveted destinations for romance — and honeymoons. After all, the cluster of five islands — main crescent-shaped Thíra, plus the smaller Thirassiá, Asproníssi, Palea Kaméni, and Nea Kaméni sitting inside it — offer some of the most stunning sunset views in the Cyclades. So it’s jarring to realize that this dramatic natural beauty came out of 12 major volcanic eruptions, 20,000 years apart, the last of which caused the underwater caldera (volcanic crater), giving Thíra its round center.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Santorini

Travelers flock to the island’s villas to bask in the Mediterranean climate, with peak season in the summer when temperatures range from the 70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit. September and October stay in the mid-60s to 70s, with fewer crowds, making it an ideal time to visit. October starts the rainy season, which lasts through March (peaking in December and January), with temperatures mostly in the 50s. But April and May bring flowers and less rain, as well as a comfortable climate from the mid-50s to mid-70s. Beachwear dominates the wardrobe in the warm months, though a long-sleeved shirt or coverup is useful starting in September. Definitely pack rain gear and a jacket from October through March, and hang on to those light sweaters in April and early May.

Top things to do in Santorini

Kamari Beach

Located on the east coast about four miles southeast of the main city of Fira, this black sand beach is also one of Santorini’s largest, boasting sea views complemented by Mesa Vouno Hill. The resort town’s promenade is filled with al fresco restaurants and lively nightlife.

Perissa

On the southeast corner of Thíra sits this coastal village, known for Timios Stavros Church (with its blue domes), the Museum of Minerals and Fossils, and its own black sand beach.

Fira to Oia Hike

The 6-mile walk along the caldera is one of the island’s most iconic experiences, as it passes through the towns of Imerovigli and Firostefani, while offering ocean views along the way. While it’s possible both directions, starting in Fira is a bit more of a downhill route.
