“The monastery is located 2 km east of Herceg Novi, in a unique atmosphere of Mediterranean vegetation. It is one of the most beautiful examples of Baroque architecture on the Adriatic. It consists of three churches: two dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin, a monastery residence with a treasury on the north side of the courtyard, and the church of St. Sava, isolated on a nearby hill. Above the door of the Little Church of the Assumption of the Virgin, on the inside, is a fresco-inscription from 1831 on which the year of foundation of this church is mentioned in 1030. Several layers of murals were discovered on the interior walls. The Great Church of the Assumption of the Virgin was built from 1777 to 1799 by Korčula master Nikola Foretic. In architectural terms, the church is a mix of styles, from the Byzantine through the Roman-Greek to the Baroque - a successful blend of Eastern and Western culture. The iconostasis is also a blend of traditional iconography and new Baroque forms. Church of St. Sava, according to some sources dates from the 15th according to some from the 13th century. Among the most valuable exhibits in the monastery treasury are the crystalline cross of St. Sava from the 13th century, a cloak, a silver heel, a statue of the Tvrdos Monastery and other objects from the 17th century, a portrait of the Russian emperor Peter the Great etc.”
