Your guide to Settle

All About Settle

This North Yorkshire market town is set amid spectacular landscapes, and many of its stone buildings date back to the 17th century. Today, the town centre is home to independent shops, cafes, pubs, and a Tuesday market that fills the square with stands selling cheese, clothes, tools, and stationery.

In addition to a lively city centre, you’ll find plenty of ways to get up close and personal with the region’s natural landscape. A limestone cliff known as the Castleberg Crag towers over Settle, offering a sprawling view of the town for anyone willing to trek to the top of it. A 30-minute drive east brings you to Gordale Scar, where you can explore spellbinding waterfalls and rugged cliff faces. Settle is the starting point for the Settle-Carlisle railway line, one of Britain’s most scenic routes. As you rumble through the countryside, you’ll pass over the Ribblehead Viaduct, a 32-metre-high structure with 24 magnificent arches.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Settle

While the region sees a good deal of rain year-round, you’ll find the least amount of rain and the highest temperatures during spring and summer, making this an excellent time of year to visit Settle. In the spring, the town hosts the Settle-Carlisle Walking and Music Festival, a weeklong celebration of the area’s spectacular landscape that includes strolls, talks, and music along the Settle-Carlisle railway line. The Settle Flowerpot Festival, which takes place in the summer months, features stunning flower pot displays throughout the town.

In autumn, things start to cool down and you’ll see a bit more rain, but there are still plenty of nice days when you can explore the outdoor sites the region has to offer. Just be sure to always bring along an umbrella and an extra layer, as the weather can be changeable. The temperature rarely dips below freezing in winter, but high levels of wind and rain make it feel much colder than it is, so be sure to bundle up before heading out for the day.

Top things to do in Settle

Gallery on the Green

Gallery on the Green is a quirky, minuscule gallery housed in a decommissioned telephone box. The gallery exhibitions feature work by local and internationally known artists alike. There’s no parking on the green, so you’ll need to visit the gallery on foot. It’s a 10-minute walk from the Settle marketplace.

Scaleber Force Waterfall

Tucked away in a wooded gorge, cocooned by vibrant green ferns and moss, the Scaleber Force Waterfall cascades over black rock ledges and flows into the wood. You can catch a spectacular view of the falls from high up in Scaleber Wood, then follow the path down to catch an up-close view of the cascades.

Victoria Hall

Victoria Hall is one of the world’s oldest surviving music halls. Built around 1853, the Victorian venue has long been a hub for the town’s social and cultural events, and today it hosts varied programmes including comedy shows, film screenings, and live music performances.
