Holiday Rentals in Slanesville

Just booked in Slanesville

Rustic, 100 year old 1 rm primitive cabin in West Virginia along the Cacapon River. Beautifully restored with wood stove, loft, & screened in porch. Access to 214 acres of private mountain land & over 1/4 mile of river frontage plus 1/2 acre pond, trails, and private shooting range. This cabin is completely off grid. It has NO electricity or plumbing/running water, but does have a Porta-John serviced weekly. Renter will be cabin camping so pack accordingly; tents also welcome.
The rental is a historic cabin with the exterior recently renovated to maintain its rustic look. It is suitable for outdoorsman, couples wanting a more rugged romantic getaway in private, or for family camping. Note that some building materials (stacks of lumber and barn boards) are still on premises from the renovations. The cabin has a large screened in porch and an open floor plan on the main floor with a small loft overlooking it. Four people can comfortably camp in the cabin. Guests can throw down a sleep pad and sleeping bag on the floor or in the loft or bring a cot. There are two cots and a small hammock strung between beams inside for your use. There is also a Porta-John serviced weekly outside the cabin. The cabin is completely off grid and does not have running water/plumbing/electricity. It is primitive camping in style, but that means you will see creepy crawly things like spiders and possibly even a mouse. You need to pack like your are camping. Also, it is mandatory you bag out all waste (HUMAN or otherwise). I recommend bringing a camp toilet if you do not want to use the Porta-John. Due to the water table essentially at ground level, we take proper disposal of human waste very seriously because it will rapidly pollute the ground water. On very humid days you may be able to here a distant crackling sound caused by the high tension powerlines that cross the property. Don't worry, that is normal. The wood stover is now operational for the season. Please familiarize yourself in advance of proper use of a wood stove and specifically the damper (YouTube). If you intend to use the wood stove, please bring your own firewood (wood may or may not be there), make sure the fire is completely out before leaving the cabin, and do not split wood inside or on the porch. The gas range is not currently operational. Please do not try to use it. If you would like to make a fire outside, there is a camp fire ring in front of the porch with some benches and logs to sit on and a pile for wood in front of it. Do not cut or damage live trees for wood. Feel free to bring a grill, generator, battery operated fan (it's hot and humid in the summer), or other convenience. If you want to just tent camp, that is perfectly fine too and I recommend using the upper campsite for that since it offers an excellent view and privacy.
You are in the mountains of West Virginia. People are friendly and respectful and enjoy their privacy and expect the same courtesy. Although very private, you will occasionally see a neighbor passing the cabin en route to their property at the far end of the access road. If you head to the back 164 acres, you will pass through a small portion of private property owned by a neighbor. You have permission to use the access road, but be respectful of their property and camp site/cabin.
  • Fantastic! Jonathan was a great host, very quick to respond. I hope to be back again soon.

  • We loved our time at Jonathan's cabin! It was exactly as described -- quiet, next to the river, beautiful and well-maintained. It's a quick drive from the DC/Baltimore area and highly recommend it for those who are looking for a getaway from the city-life.

  • Since autumn is quickly coming to a close, we decided to go on a last minute overnight “camping” trip. We are avid hikers and campers, but now with two toddlers, we need more amenities than truly “roughing it” provides. Jonathan’s place was perfect. While the cabin was basic, the added luxuries of the wood-burning stove inside and the port-a-potty outside made this a relaxing and easy overnight: we instantly booked the cabin the day before; got up the next morning and enjoyed a beautiful drive to the area; stopped for lunch and provisions at the Stoney Creek General Store (which has ridiculously good steak sandwiches – I mean, really good!); and then found the cabin with no problem using the helpful information and directions with pictures Jonathan sent to us the night before, which we downloaded onto an iPad so they would be accessible. Once settled in, we basically just walked the large property and along the river and soaked it all up. We used the two cots that are in the cabin with a bunch of pillows and bedding we brought, which was very comfortable. We cooked outdoors in the open fire pit (just hot dogs and baked beans), although there was a charcoal grill and charcoal readily available. We found that 2 gallons of water for 2 adults and 2 toddlers was more than enough for cooking and cleaning for an overnight, although we also had a carton of milk for the girls which we kept cold in a cooler. Because we were just doing an overnight, Jonathan didn’t rush us out the next day, so we had a leisurely morning/early afternoon before heading to see some of the gorgeous local state parks (and stopping for another steak sandwich at Stony Creek).

  • The cabin was very clean and well kept when we arrived. We drove to the location in an SUV but didn't know we needed 4WD possibly. Thankfully the creek was low so we drove through easily. The location is very serene and private besides being able to hear the power lines near by. We were provided cots and brought our own sleeping bags, we also brought our own propane table top cooker since the gas in the cabin isn't on. Overall it was a beautiful location and we would definitely return again.

  • Amazing space! We had the best time! Loved using the canoe to spend time on the river. Due to some heavy rain we had to park our car and walk in but it was worth it as the walk was super doable even with supplies and dogs.

    Kristen2017-06-19T00:00:00Z
  • Due to personal reasons I was unable to make my stay at the cabin, but Joe was very helpful and communicative! Would be happy to make it back out there some time in the future.

    Sasha2017-05-16T00:00:00Z
  • This was exactly what we wanted, a beautiful, remote space! The directions to get there from Joe were perfect! And the property was true to the listing, if not better! The hikes, pond and river were all great! Couldn't have asked for a better space! Will definitely be going back!

  • Great spot! My GF and I were going camping out in western Maryland but the forecast called for heavy rain on Friday night and we weren't keen on spending a night setting up a tent and sitting in it all night in the rain so we looked on Air BnB for a place to stay dry and found this spot an hour a way. It was a little hairy to get to the cabin in my GF's all wheel drive Suburu in the rain in the dark but we got there. OK tbh I drove her car on the road to the cabin through the stream, the mud, and the rain and it was kind of fun ;) . The cabin is dry and fairly clean for a cabin in the woods with no power and no running water. The porch was great to hang out in during the rain. We ended up setting up an air mattress on the floor and it was no problem, but there are two cots available. The little camp stove was great for making breakfast in the morning. We didn't get a chance to go out on the river with the canoes but the river looks choice. Definitely only pick this spot if you have a capable vehicle and enjoy camping/outdoors. If those facts do not dissuade you the place is absolutely amazing! Would definitely go back some time for a whole weekend.

  • This was my first AirBNB experience- a wonderful one. I booked last minute and Vincent was very accommodating. The cabins are very clean. We had the entire place to ourselves. Vince built us a fire to grill some steaks on. The kitchen has all you need to cook a great meal. There are farm style tables throughout the property which worked wonderfully for comfortable family eating. He decorated the properties so well. I felt very at home. We stayed in Cabin 4, the view was like a treehouse, the tops of trees and mountains was beautiful. I would recommend this place to anyone.

    Allie2016-09-02T00:00:00Z
  • Vincent was very communicative before we arrived to the campsite. He emailed us several times to let us know about the weather. The campsite itself is in a beautiful location in the hills of West Virginia. Once a boy scout camp and passing through several other owners, it has since been foreclosed and is now being sold off in parcels to different investors. Vincent is responsible for the main camping area, which includes several cabins, a pavilion and a small pond. There is no internet, or toilets hooked into a septic system (get ready for Port-a-potties). There is a well-equipped kitchen that has a microwave, stove/oven and a refrigerator. The cabins have seen better days and, much to our surprise, had only screens and no windows. This was not completely clear when we booked the cabin. Luckily, we packed plenty of warm clothes and a massive down comforter. It got below freezing our first night there and we stayed moderately warm sleeping in pajamas, a hoodie, and under the comforter. There weren't too many other people at the camp, but we did get to spend time with a mother and her children around the big campfire pit. It was a very communal setting in beautiful nature. Overall, it's a nice place in a great remote setting. If you're looking to 'rough it' a bit and get off the grid, this is the place for you. If you're looking for more of 'comfort camping' I would suggest you go somewhere else.

  • It was a nice cabin, the bunks were good for camping, good mattresses. The common kitchen/game cabin was fun. We had other nice people in the adjacent cabins which made it nice as well. The small lake and beach and sauna were extra fun. The camp fire locations made it easy to hang out in cool weather and enjoy the area.

    Brent2016-11-06T00:00:00Z
  • The place was great. We had a great time with our two kids ( 7 and 11) there was plenty of activities for a weekend escape. We swam, canoe, play games, watch movies. There was plenty of wood to make fire so we had s'mores and we even grilled on the fire!. The caretaker came over the weekend an cleaned the common areas, took the trash out, and vacuum! Also any question we asked was promptly answered by Vincent! Overall, I recommend this place to any one who want to have a relaxing, yet full of activities (or lazy) time.

  • What an incredible getaway! We all affectionately dubbed Vince's property "summer camp for big kids --" an exceptionally fitting name in our opinion. Lucky for us, we had the entire campground to ourselves the whole weekend -- I highly suggest renting out all available cabins for retreats, reunions, friendly get-togethers, etc. Amenities were as advertised, and the land and facilities were even better than described. We spent our time eating together in the group kitchen, kayaking at the lake, enjoying each others company by the fire, playing board games, volleyball, swimming, and taking in the cicada chirps in the surrounding fields after dark. A couple of us made use of the wood-fired sauna at the end of the lake as well, which was fantastic. All-in-all, we couldn't have asked for a better experience. We all loved Vince and the folks he had on the property during our stay to work on his land and play a little bit by the lake. This place is an extraordinary value. We will be back! I just hope others don't catch on too fast. Thanks, Vince!

  • The grounds were perfect for a get away from the big city! The cabins were great. A really cool place not too far away from home. We will visit again.

    Theresa2017-09-01T00:00:00Z
  • This was the perfect place for a rustic weekend get-a-way. We will be back!

    Lucas 2017-05-07T00:00:00Z
  • The property is a former summer camp site, the cabins are large and comfortable with electrical outlets, lights and fans. The kitchen makes food preparation easy and convenient. The lake is a short hike from the cabins and it provided a nice break from the summer sun. This is a situation where you will be interacting with other guests, so you will need to plan your cooking around others. We got some Verizon service at the site, but if you head into town or go toward Winchester, you'll have full cell service again. We brought a toddler and he enjoyed the camp as well, I would say the site is very kid friendly.

  • Place is awesome, very remote and seclusive. Lake is beautiful. Vincent is very nice guy and helpful.

    Sai2016-08-07T00:00:00Z
  • This was the perfect weekend getaway from the city. Vince did a great job of making us feel welcome from the moment we arrived and was available as needed throughout the weekend. The other cabins were occupied by 2 families and another couple (we actually asked one of the families to switch cabins with us so their kids could all be close and the couples could be together, which Vince had no problem with) which meant we could be as social or private as we wanted. While you can definitely hang around the grounds all day (lots of games and stuff to do) we actually drove about an hour and a half to Shenandoah to hike, which I definitely recommend. The kitchen had plenty of amenities so don't worry about only bringing camping cooking gear - and if you forget some food, there is a really cute shop down the mountain (15 min drive) to get fresh, local meat, veggies, and beer. Overall we had a great experience and would definitely come back again soon!

    Emily2016-10-10T00:00:00Z
  • Bring sheets

    Stephen2017-07-20T00:00:00Z
  • Buffalo Gap has lots of charm (and nostalgia for anyone who's ever been to camp). It was great for a big group - we loved the big table in the kitchen for group meals and hanging out. Great times hanging out by the lake, and at the campfire too. Real bathrooms and stall showers will be a big improvement.

    Valerie2017-08-27T00:00:00Z
  • The cabins were great! As advertised, there were 6 twin mattresses (2 pairs of bunk beds, plus 2 separate beds), plus there was a fan in the room if it gets hot (though you should bring extra blankets if it gets cold). The showers are locker-room style, and were clean enough. If there is a proper toilet somewhere, we didn't find it - when we stayed in April 2017, the only toilets were porta-potty's scattered throughout the property (the closest one a ~1min walk from the cabins) - though Vince is constantly improving the property, and toilets are likely coming up soon! The shared kitchen cabin was well-stocked with cooking supplies (pots, pans, utensils, spices, etc) and very clean. But the main event is the location - it's beautiful! Certainly away from it all! Cell reception was sporadic, and the drive was about ~10min from the main town on narrow country roads (bring Vince's directions - they're impeccable)! Vince was also super quick to respond to messages, and was present when we checked in to help point us in the right direction. He even built a camp fire for us while we were getting unpacked! There was lots to do at the camp ground, but we didn't take advantage of it as we used this as a base for visiting DC, which is about 2+hrs away. If you're coming from the North-West (e.g. Pittsburgh) - I recommend getting to Capon Bridge via Routes (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) and 219 (in roughly that order). It's a lot of turns, but the drive is beautiful and way more exciting than standard highways. Overall - if you're looking for a quiet, minimalist place to stay and enjoy the mountains of West Virginia - look no further! (And if you're looking for even more fun - try and stay when the "Gotta Fest" is in town!)

    Brian2017-04-23T00:00:00Z
  • Great place to get away from the city. Super convenient if you are going to the off road park next door.

    David2017-05-14T00:00:00Z
  • Looking for a place to connect with your family and friends around a camp fire instead of with your virtual community around a video game? Buffalo Gap is a beautiful spot to unplug and kayak a bit on the lake, play some (board) games, eat outside and wake up with the sun rising over the hills. Vince is a welcoming, relaxed and helpful host who takes pride in setting up a real away-from-it-all-haven. We will be back!

  • Although we didn't get to meet Shari in person, she was a great host! Prior to our arrival, she communicated clearly how we could get in and left instructions on the counter for when we arrived. The space was nice -clean and comfortable! I cannot believe how dark and quiet it was out there!!! Loved that. And- true to the description, the well water is delicious.

  • Sharon and Phil are an incredibly nice couple! The picturesque views while driving to the property, the cosy yet pretty big house, family history and the old pictures and paintings on the walls - all of these made our stay a truly unforgettable experience for us. I would love to stay there for another weekend and I'm pretty sure we could find A LOT of topics to discuss! :) Thank you for hosting us, it was so good!

    Art2015-08-24T00:00:00Z
  • Sharon is very easy to deal with and accommodating. The house was perfect for what we needed.

    Abby2017-07-16T00:00:00Z
  • If I used just one word to describe our experience that would be - AWESOME! We got everything we could've thought of, even more. The description of the property was very accurate, but the reality was even better. The house is not that big, but it has three bedrooms and two bathrooms, and it's very well designed. We used the grill on the deck for all our meals (like shish kebob) and we tried the bone fire once and it was so cool :-) We spent the Labor Day weekend and got so much fun! Thank you Sharon!

Private wooded campground by a shallow river. Great for families or a group of friends. You must bring all your supplies.
  • this is definitely a private and secluded spot! hardly any evidence of other humans which was exactly what we were looking for. it was fun to explore the property and creek. the night noises were great - a few different owls, lots of insects and birds. we went to berkeley springs for the day to the hot springs and a nice restaurant and then back to the woods. the backroads around there are really fun to drive on and beautiful in the fall weather. i would recommend studying the directions and maps very carefully. there's not cellphone reception anywhere around there and the spot can be hard to find. having a car with high clearance really would have helped. we bottomed out a lot getting to the spot.

    Rayden2014-09-21T00:00:00Z
  • A most-charming place! Contrary to popular belief, this lovely campsite was easy to find. Definitely bring along all the things you need, there's a small fire circle and nothing else. totally as described. Thanks Austin!

    Heidi2015-05-25T00:00:00Z
  • Nice secluded camping spot. It's the perfect place to get away and disconnect in the woods. The camp site is currently difficult to reach for people with low riding vehicles as there is a washed out bridge that needs to be crossed to access it. We were able to get across with a small SUV. The property is very pretty with the small river about a 5-10 minute walk from the site. The surrounding area is very pastoral and scenic. There is a small red/white/blue pinwheel that marks the dirt road that accesses the campsite and its just past a road marked Horseshoe Trail. Definitely recommend this spot!

  • This was our 2nd trip here -excellent! Austin is a terrific host, very responsive. The site is absolutely perfect for primitive camping and we already can't wait to come back. Thank you.

  • Although I didn't get to meet Austin, he was very responsive and helpful. We had a little trouble finding the place at first, but the directions provided proved most helpful. Description is accurate and this was a great getaway for camping in the middle of nowhere when you don't want to be bothered. This is my second visit! I highly recommend this host and his properties.

  • We were looking for a private, secluded place to camp for a few nights and this campsite was perfect. Our main concern was that we'd have a hard time finding the property since we wouldn't be arriving until after dark, but Austin's detailed directions got us there without major problems (we did pull off the road too soon but it was obvious that we made a mistake). When we did arrive we found a small fire pit in a clearing big enough for a few tents. The campsite itself was just what we wanted: large, quiet, and no other people around. The property was gorgeous with a drying riverbed to explore during the day (look for crawfish) and stargazing at night. A perfect weekend spent hanging out by a fire and we're looking forward to more just like it.

  • Great spot!! Glad we had our Jeep as this place is off the beaten path - just as we had hoped! Perfect site, super quiet and secluded and yet near a very convenient general store! We will definitely be back!! Thanks for being so communicative and allowing us to enjoy your great property, Austin!!

    Sandra2016-09-05T00:00:00Z
  • Austin was available by text and phone, and when we arrived to discover that access had washed out due to heavy rains several days prior, he was quick to assure a full refund. Although such weather may be unusual, it would be a good idea in the future to confirm access prior to the first booking after heavy rain. That said, I would recommend this listing and will likely be back (in fairer weather) to actually get a chance to camp there in the future.

20 super private acres 2.5 hours outside of DC. House is cut 1000 feet off the road and invisible to passers by. Unplug for the weekend and enjoy the peach of total solitude with the convenience of being 15 minutes from town. Perfect place for a dog vacation with a year round stream and great dirt roads for walking or bike riding.
The house is totally private and has a back deck that overlooks the treed valley. Perfect for late night sipping wine and enjoying the peace and quiet of a wooded retreat.
Though the house is completely private—the town is only about 12 minutes away where you will find a grocery store, and a few eateries. Further down the road is an old antique store and a hometown dinner.

  • This cabin is a great place to soak in nature. It's beautifully situated with a wonderful NW views from a wide deck that runs the length of the house. Better yet, all of the rooms have access from french doors onto the deck. It's ideal for a couple or small family with one or two kids. Angie has done a great job of anticipating everything her guests may need, but you'll need to think about bringing a cooler full of food or shopping in Winchester as there are no real grocery shopping options nearby. Fortunately, Angie's fridge is full size. By the way, we highly recommend taking a ride on the Potomac Eagle Scenic Railway while you're in the area.

  • Angie is the perfect hostess!

  • Angie, our host, responded very quickly to our last-minute reservation request and was very accommodating to our special requests. The cabin was clean, well-equipped and comfortable. We were looking for a quiet escape and it was exactly that - beautiful stars at night and a nice porch perfect for knitting and reading. Would book again.

    WV Mountain cabin

For your next family getaway, trip with friends, or romantic retreat, escape to "West Virginia Cabin in the Woods," an inviting mountain lake cabin. Nestled in a private mountain range, this all-cedar vacation rental cabin includes complete access to a private 50-acre community lake with beach. Look forward to breathing in fresh, crisp air and enjoying the peaceful sense of silence, only broken by the sounds of birdsong and laughter.
This beautiful, new cedar cabin features 2 bedrooms, 2 large loft areas, 1 bathroom, and enough sleeping arrangements for 10 or more guests throughout 1,500 square feet of tastefully appointed living space, making it an ideal home base for your next visit to wild and wonderful West Virginia. You'll feel as though you've entered a whole different world upon your arrival at the property, which is located just 2 hours and 15 minutes from the capital beltway. Your favorite relaxing spot will quickly become the cabin's huge 12-by-45-foot deck, boasting amazing views of the treetops, mountains, and sunset, plus glimpses of the lake beyond, once the leaves fall. Sit back in one of the deck's reclining chairs and enjoy the sunshine during the day and the twinkling night sky, emblazoned with more stars than you ever dreamed existed. Attached to the deck is a roomy screened-in porch, which seats 6 guests with a patio couch and comfortable chairs. The screened porch is perfect for reading, relaxing and talking. A private 7-person hot tub right outside on the deck completes the picture. In the hot tub, you can soak your cares away and admire the spectacular wooded scenery surrounding the premises. Numerous invigorating jets propel the hot tub's healing waters to relax and soothe you, as bright multicolored lights, 2 waterfalls, and a volcano jet add to the excitement. It's a fabulous place to watch the stars and morning sunrise. The deck also has a gas grill for barbequing burgers, fish or veggies. Relax in sunny greenery and have a wonderful time! Cabin in the Woods is cozy enough for a couple, yet large enough for a group of good friends or the entire family. All the amenities you want in your ultimate home-away-from-home are here, including central air conditioning and heat, high-speed wireless internet access, and a lovely stone propane fireplace. After preparing a tasty meal in the quaint full kitchen, gather with your companions in the massive dining room that seats 10. The dining room is surrounded by windows on 3 sides with glorious wooded views. The huge oak table is perfect for playing games together - take your pick from the many board games provided in the dining room cabinet, including Scrabble, Scattergories, Life, Jenga, Settlers of Catan, Candyland, Chutes and Ladders, as well as playing cards, dice, and ping pong paddles and balls. The cabin's welcoming master bedroom offers a nice queen-sized bed with cedar cabinets, a delightful stained glass window, 16-foot high ceiling with fan and trapezoid windows, and a private door leading out to the 12-foot square screened-in porch, and to the hot tub. The second bedroom is a snug bunk room with a set of bunk beds for 2, complete with storage drawers under the bunk. Additional sleeping arrangements can be found in the cabin's 2 roomy loft spaces, which are carpeted. These are true lofts, and though kids can stand up in them, most adults cannot, yet they are very comfortable to sleep and sit in. Loft 1 is well suited for adults or children, featuring a queen-sized futon on the floor, 2 toddler beds, and a safety gate at the top of the stairs with sturdy rails for your peace of mind. This loft also features 8 windows that let in an abundance of natural light and comfortable carpet for playing or lounging. Adults and kids alike will love being able to look down on the living room through the railing from the loft! Loft 2 is a 12-by-12-foot loft over the dining area, offering trapezoid windows looking out to the woods and 2 single beds, with enough spare room to sleep 2 extra guests in sleeping bags easily. Accessible via sturdy pull-down ladder, the second loft is especially fun for teenagers but not suitable for small children, as the opening for the ladder does not close.
Lake Ferndale is stocked with fish, including small mouth bass, and is a great place to do a little fishing. Additionally, Lake Ferndale is a perfect spot to bring your kayak or canoe for some easy paddling. There's a place to launch your boat, and since only electric motors are allowed, everything stays quiet and still - it's a lovely lake to boat! Those seeking more adventurous waters should head 2 miles over to the South Branch of the Potomac River, a popular destination for boating, fishing or tubing. Cabin in the Woods sits on 6 acres of forest in an unspoiled environment, making it an ideal accommodation choice for nature enthusiasts. Climb up the mountain through the Hardwood Forest of tower oaks, black walnuts, red and white maples, wildflowers and ferns, and you are likely to find some of the native wildlife on the property such as birds, turtles, frogs, or land salamanders. There are nesting pairs of bald eagles nearby, and in the spring and summer, they will sometimes soar for 20 minutes right over the property. In addition to the Potomac River, Cabin in the Woods sits close to numerous State and National Parks, the historic Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad, and many important historical sites. Hampshire County is the oldest County in West Virginia and the oldest incorporated town, Romney, is the county seat. Originally part of Lord Fairfax's Northern Neck Proprietary, the land here was first settled around 1750. Hampshire County and its surrounding area have a vast, rich heritage steeped in Colonial, Revolutionary, and Civil War history. Stop by the Civil War Museum in nearby Romney to view its fascinating collection of historic artifacts and weapons! No matter what season you plan to visit West Virginia, you certainly won't have a shortage of exciting things to see and do. Whether you choose to spend the majority of your time here sunning on the beach, swimming in the lake, fishing, reading a book in the screened porch, or simply relaxing on the deck while observing the night stars, this delightful Lake Ferndale vacation rental cabin will not disappoint - reserve "West Virginia Cabin in the Woods" today for a fun-filled getaway you won't forget anytime soon!

My place is close to Romney, great views,. You’ll love my place because of fresh air, beautiful, across from a farm with many horses, the coziness.
It is a utilitarian cabin. Very cute but it is not a hotel room. There is queen futon and queen bed with futon mattress. Bring your own sheets and blanket and towels. No hot water.
The neighbors in front have lots of horses which you can see from the cabin. They are there year around. The neighbor at the end of road and beginning are also there year around. For emergency you may ask for help. We are not responsible for any accidents, damages or loss during your stay. The closest most equipped hospital is in Winchester, Virginia. There is a hospital in Romney for quick help that is 45 minutes away.
  • A secluded getaway with a mystical, charming element. We absolutely loved staying here and would again if given the chance.

    Lauren2017-06-19T00:00:00Z
  • A place to unplug and watch the tall grass blow in the wind. Large fields to run around in, woods in the back backyard, and an easy trail to walk and see horses and cows.

  • If you're looking to get away for a weekend to the center of the middle of nowhere, this is a spartan, but plenty comfy accommodation -- roughing it, but not really. The area is lovely, green with tints of fall coming on, a horse farm across the road. The cabin is two smallish rooms -- living room and kitchen combine for one, bedroom and bathroom the other (i.e. probably not made for two people unless you're intimately acquainted). The host is quite responsive and invested in your enjoying her little treasure.

  • A charming rustic cabin in a peaceful remote location. The animals across the street were amazing! Nazanin made checkin so easy. It was a relaxing place to come back to after a long day of hiking :)

  • For when you want to go somewhere to untangle yourself from a highly connected world. Spent 5 nights in this cabin here in April. Phone calls dropped, there was no internet, no email, and no stress! Exactly what I wanted. I was able to text using AT&T just fine, so not completely cut off. Good view of the mountains and night sky (I saw two shooting stars).

  • I just want to give an extra thanks to Su & Philip for showing such great hospitality at their property on the mountain. I am not one who would prefer a fancy hotel in a populated urban area over a quite cabin in the woods. This place is just perfect for a couple or somebody traveling alone as I do for business in WV. After staying through the changing seasons, I made my best decision choosing Su's cabin in Hampshire County WV. Really look forward to staying here again next time in the north WV area for business or family vacation.

  • Awesome little cabin with a beautiful view. More than worth the price. Super clean and comfortable, great place to get away. Very peaceful. Asked my fiancé to marry me there, and couldn't have asked for a better place to do it. It was super cold and windy when we stayed but we still couldn't help but be outside by the fire pit and enjoy the view. Owner and property manager are as nice and helpful as they come. We had a perfect experience with them and the property.

  • It was a dream! SO beautiful, the pictures do not do it justice. The people were wonderful and the accommodations were just what you would picture in a hallmark movie. My son and I spent the summer here together for some bonding time and it was the best time we had ever had! Su and Phillip were so warm and welcoming. They were always right there to help with anything I needed. I can't wait to see them again and have another stay. Namaste! :)

  • My wife and I were looking for a great weekend getaway to unplug and Buffalo Gap gave us exactly what we needed! The mountains this space is nestled in are gorgeous and we really enjoyed taking advantage of the wood burning sauna and pond! The private family campsite also gave us the privacy we were looking for while not having to be completely separate from everything. We definitely recommend!

  • We loved our visit to this rustic retreat. Our stay at a multiple family camping site was great. It was close to the lake where the kids loved the kayaks. The large game room was very fun. The hot shower facilities were fantastic and the free firewood was a delightful bonus. Although we did rent a cabin they looked very nice and large. We highly recommend this fun retreat, only 2 hours from DC.

  • A wonderful stay! Went with our 2 young children (4 and 2), and it was such a peaceful, pleasant weekend. The weather was chilly, and I was initially worried, that without swimming we wouldn't have enough to entertain them. Worries were unwarrented. They loved exploring the grounds, playing in the pavilion and dining hall, and sittting by the campfire. Can't wait to plan another trip!

  • The Cacapon Cottage was a really neat place we found last minute. Vincent was so quick to respond to all of my questions prior to booking. He was there onsite as well working and mingling a bit which was nice :) our boys loved the swimming/fishing spring fed pond! We encountered some rain but still managed to enjoy our one night stay. There is no wifi or cell service (at least with att), but that's just what we needed! Thank you for an enjoyable stay. We hope to be back again soon :)

  • We stayed in the Capacon cottage (3 adult females) and it was lovely ! The beds were comfortable, the kitchen had everything we needed to cook (coffee pot & griddle were what we mainly used) and there is a small grill right outside with picnic table & bonfire pit. There is a private bathroom in the cabin. The lake is just a very quick walk down the hill and it is BEAUTIFUL. There are kayaks, canoes, all sorts of floaties to play on... We did our shopping in the small town nearby at dollar general, farmer's daughter, and the gas station and this was sufficient. Please note at&t gets no service on the property & limited service in town. All of the other guest were very nice and Vincent & Marz were extremely kind & helpful. We had such a relaxing trip and would definitely recommend this place & come stay again !!! Thank you

  • We had a great stay at Buffalo Gap Retreat. The property is beautiful and picturesque. The lake is a standout attraction. The water is crystal clear and, along with the sandy beach, springs and creeks around the lake, provided hours of entertainment for kids and adults. It was great to have boats and kayaks to use too. The cottage was immaculately clean and everything was as described. Vince and Barbara were wonderful hosts and communication was speedy, simple, and straightforward. We look forward to returning!

  • We stayed at Watercress Cabin for a family getaway weekend. Vincent and the caretaker were friendly and helpful. We enjoyed the campfires, kayaking, the sauna, basketball, and the fun games at the pavilion and dining hall. Our dogs had plenty of space to explore too. • We loved our stay at the Watercress Cottage! The cottage was very convenient to the lake which was a huge plus. The cottage had everything we needed. Buffalo Gap Retreat is a great place to stay! The lake was beautiful and clean, the grounds were fun to explore and most importantly the owner and caretaker were always around if we needed them. Another plus is that it's dog friendly. Our pooches loved their stay too!

  • My wife and I were looking for a chance to go camping at the last minute. That wasn't practical so I tried to find a cabin on Airbnb. We found Vincent's place and it was exactly what we were looking for. Plus, he and his investors are working on developing the facility into more of a camping resort. The place is clean as promised and offers a variety of activities over and above just having a rustic cabin available for the weekend.

  • My friends and I had a wonderful get-away night at this Buffalo Gap cabin in Capon Bridge, WV. It was very easy to find, and the listing describes the amenities/cabin pretty accurately. Vincent was super easy to communicate with as well, and always got back to me super fast! The land is all an old camp site, and you can walk the grounds and see all the old cabins that once housed teen campers, the pavilion (has cornhole), an old gymnasium, and a manmade lake with kayaks. I could just imagine what the area was like in its hey day. With that being said, it's so awesome that Vincent is working on fixing it up because the location is beautiful and the cabins have great potential. I am excited to see what he does with it!! My only negative really is the fact there is only one fire pit overall. It would have been nice if there was a fire pit per cabin, so my pals and I could kinda be alone. However, all the cabins are right next to each other, so you're bound to be interacting with others that are there. So if you're looking for a place to escape and be super remote - this might not be the best pick for you. However, if you're looking for something a little different and unique, with an interesting story, then this is perfect!

  • Vince was spectacular and his cabins are a true gem. He took great care of our family and helped make sure that we had fun. The communal fire pit and kitchen offer a tremendous opportunity for the four families staying on site to interact and become friends. Our dogs had fun roaming the MASSIVE camp, and we loved the Sauna. Definitely recommend and will definitely be coming back.

  • Vince was a super host! Beautiful place!

  • My family and I rented Cabins one and two from Vince this Father's day weekend to celebrate one of our children turning five, and one of them turning eleven, as well as Father's day. The cabins were lovely, and the setup is great. We loved that the kitchen cabin is separate from the sleeping cabins. We loved the communal kitchen and fire pit where we met new people and enjoyed swapping stories. Vince goes above and beyond as a host, and is a wonderful person to get to know and spend time with. He was so sweet to my children and our family. The Cabins at Buffalo Gap are a perfect place for a couples getaway, a solo adventure, or a family vacation. I highly recommend this hidden treasure to anyone and everyone of all ages, and am looking forward to bringing my mom back this July for her birthday.

  • At first, I had a problem with the reservation but Vincent was super patient and helpful trying to solve the problem, which was with the system. The place is a little hard to find so try to get there with time before the night finds you. You have to considere that the cellphone signal gets lost so easily and it's not always available. The place is very peaceful and natural, excellent if you want to spend time coneccting with your friends, playing in the water, in the sand, having a barbecue, nothing fancy, very simple which was great according to my expectations.

  • Our camping canoe trip got rained out, so we decided to stay here for the weekend. We had a great time. Rustic cabins & beautiful scenery. Place was well described.

  • Vincent is an excellent guy and the place is haven. Quite, secluded, peaceful, surrounded by mountains and trees, this place is of its kind. Beach is beautiful and refreshing activities like tubes, kayaks, canoe.............. We really enjoyed and will visit again and again. Thanks a lot Vincent.

Rooms were very clean and well maintained. The staff there were so helpful and friendly. The dining area is well equipped. The lake and various activities were so amazing. Thanks to Vincent and the entire buffalo gap retreat for the awesome experience. We will definitely do it again.

  • It's a great space perfect for families that are trying to disconnect. Vincent is very personable and a great owner. We will be back

  • This place is excellent to stay for 1 or 2 nights or may be more. This location is sorrounded by hills. For the price he charges per night, this is a killer deal. May not be worth if you go alone, but if you go as a group who can do kayaking, playing games, cooking and want to spend some time away from technology world, this is very good.

    Seshpavan2017-07-23T00:00:00Z
  • We loved it. The scenery was beautiful. They had alot to keep the kids occupied as well.

  • Yet again; what a wonderful experience. Our family consists of nine people, five of them children, and this is our favorite getaway spot. Our children, usually plugged in 15/7 (the other 9 hours spent sleeping) are forever asking when we will be returning to Buffalo Gap, a place with minimal to no cell reception and no wifi. Aged 6-12 they overflow with glee when we tell them we have booked a cabin. We have celebrated four birthdays so far, by choice, wanting to celebrate with their family at Buffalo Gap,  over a party with their friends. This is how powerful the pull from Buffalo Gap is. It's energy is almost spiritual,  but in a natural way. The location is prime. The camp site is not so large that it is uncomfortable to walk from location to location, even if you are a bit out of shape, such as myself (although, round is a shape...) The Gym, Pavilion, Lake house and fire pit, all communal spaces, which is great for the adults and children both. It is so easy to get caught up in our own story, we forget other people exist, and one of my favorite parts about Buffalo Gap is the coming together of people. The lake and the sauna are superb,  in the summer, nothing better than sitting in the wood burning sauna and then leaping from the attached dock into the crystal clear, spring fed lake. We have rented out several different cabins, Vince's cabins on the hill, with a communal kitchen, bath house and shower house are great places to stay. Vince makes you feel as though you are family opening up his beautiful corner of the world. Due to the size of our family and our love for separate rooms, we tend to stay in the "Hilton" , more specifically "Slanes Knob". We love it there. It has become our home away from home. I would highly recommend everyone of all walks of life, and all ages, to come stay in this revamped, vintage, "summer campesk", retreat. Affordable, beautiful,  clean, tranquil. Truly one of the world's perfect places.

    Rebecca2017-08-13T00:00:00Z
  • Yet again Vince has out done himself. We loved having a communal loungr/refrigerator area, as well as our own private kitchenette and dining area. We also enjoyed having THREE working bathrooms. The addition of the grill and fire pit behind the cabin was also a very nice touch. We were lucky enough to celebrants Vince's birthday with him while staying at Buffalo Gap this weekend. This is an amazing venue for people on all walks of life at all ages. We had a group of four adults and five children and Vince opened his home, his hospitality, his resources, and his heart to us, and we are forever grateful. We have made Buffalo gap our weekend home many times over the last few years and will continue returning as long as we can. It is clean, human and animal friendly and an amazing slice of heaven. 10 out of 10. Well done Vince and Partners. We look forward to our next stay.

The private North River Cottage is one fourth of a 2000 square foot quadplex -- and through it can be doubled in size by renting it's other "half" - the Cacapon Cottage. These two 500 square foot cottages are separated by a locked door which latches locked from each side but can be opened in co-rented.

  • Look no further, this is a piece of paradise. Some cabins have their own private bathroom and some have shared shower facilities so be sure to know what you are paying for. I thought they all had shared bathrooms and was pleasantly surprised when I arrived. Of course these are the pricier units. I did walk by the share bathrooms and it was pretty nice and clean. Tip: Call ahead to schedule arrival details or arrive before nightfall as it's not easy to navigate in the dark, looking for a place with which you are unfamiliar. Free firewood was great. Free kayaks etc but if there are many guests, you may miss out or just have to wait. Kitchen has dishes, coffee maker, utensils, cups, mugs, bowls, electric griddles, and toaster. Bring dishwashing liquid. Great place for car camping. I loved the cabin but plan to return for some car camping! Marz and Vincent are lovely people!

  • This place is paradise! It is a work in progress that will be incomparable very soon

  • I can't even think of where to begin, this place was so wonderful! We stayed in a one room cabin with four beds (teen, tween, and mom) and had everything we could possibly need. The beds were unbelievably comfy, the kitchenette amazingly well appointed (and I actually cooked!), bathroom had not one critter (and the same can't even be said of my home, sheesh!), water was perfect for washing and doing dishes, heat & pressure was great, space in the cottage was used well, and plenty of air and light. We brought two extra fans (it is late July, y'all) and were perfectly comfy all times of day. We hiked, boated, swam, jumped off the dock, played volleyball, chatted with other guests, hung out with MaRz around the fire, chilled at the cabin, explored the grounds, played games in the covered pavilion, and all around had the most wonderful WV experience. Who needs expensive resorts when you have Buffalo Gap?

    Nicole2017-07-24T00:00:00Z
  • We loved everything super amazing place to visit with family and friends. Take a night by the lake and have a bonfire with company of everyone. And enjoy the water. We will defiantly coming back for the summer with more people.

    Monika2017-09-11T00:00:00Z
  • Vincent and Barbara were wonderful to work with. We went there to visit with our new grandbaby - who lives in a tiny house in Capon Bridge. They have only been open for 4 months, but are already modernizing the cabins and landscaping around the cabins. The cabins or common areas have every thing you need and it is a short trip into Capon Bridge - which, although small, has the Farmer's Daughter (once you have Pete's sausage, you don't want anything else!), the River House, restaurants and groceries and general goods. The beds were comfortable. We stayed in the dormitory style cabins with a connecting door which was perfect for our family needs, including a small dog, and cooked all our meals in or on the grill. I definitely recommend this place!

    David2017-10-22T00:00:00Z
  • The North River Cottage is rustic elegance at its finest. There is a refrigerator, sink, dishes, utensils, pots, and pans. There's also two hot plates and a coffeemaker. You can push two of the beds together, put a queen mattress top on them, and have a restful night. The windows on the north side have screens, so there's lots of fresh air. There's also a rotating fan if it gets too warm. There's a lovely round table with beautiful antique chairs in the middle of the room.

  • Super awesome weekend trip!

    Daniel2017-08-06T00:00:00Z
  • This place was exactly what our family needed. It had a very nostalgic feel to it- the kind of place you can visit once a year to get away and make some good old fashioned memories. The cabins are rustic- as they should be- but have everything you could need. Vincent was great- there when you need him but not all up in your space and he was very knowledgeable of the surrounding areas and town. The grounds are beautiful- hills are a little tough for the young ones to navigate- and the game room and lake were perfect. We will definitely be coming back and staying for longer.
