“Only a quick drive from here to Mt Egmont/Taranaki. There is a visitors centre and cafe and lots of lovely safe tracks to walk on either in the bush or up the mountain depending on your level of fitness. Something for everyone and a MUST do while you are in Taranaki. ”

“Built in the mid 1930s, to provide road access to the lower and middle valley farms known as the Mangapurua Valley Soldiers Settlement, the Bridge to Nowhere stands as a poignant memorial to the abandoned hopes and dreams of the returning World War I servicemen who braved this remote area. Attempting to transform virgin native forest into farmland, these pioneer settlers eventually bent to the will of the land, abandoning titles due to the area's difficult access for trading and the onset of the Great Depression. You can take a day tour on a jetboat to the Mangapurua Landing on the Whanganui River, followed by a 40 minute lovely, flat walk on a well maintained path through native forest ”

Park
“Our neighbours at Bushy Park are mostly birds including; bellbirds, kereru, north island robin, saddlebacks, hihi, moreporks as well as the falcon, fantail, grey warbler, mallard, pukeko, silvereye, kingfishers, and white-faced heron. The sanctuary is home to some kiwi too. The park has walking tracks through the forest providing easy all-weather access. It’s also home to Ratanui (the Big Rata), this tree is over 500 years old and is 43 metres in height. We have our own old Rata on the farm and it’s a joy to see it and its big brother flower around Christmas time. Visiting the forest is free, donations to help protect this special place are welcomed. There is also a café in the Historic Homestead open for Devonshire teas, a number of our guests have also booked in for meals at the homestead. www.bushyparksanctuary.org.nz”

Café
“Lunchtime is busy almost every day, but there are more seats available at the back. The small garden setting is there and allowed to smoke. Most cabinet foods are always great and soup of the day will be a fabulous choice in winter. (I couldn't find any better soup in this area yet :) There are varieties of brunch menu as well. The choice is yours. Try!”

River
“Lovely national park with short hikes to Dawson Falls and other parts of the area. Also the closest place to find snow if it has snowed low enough down the mountain. Can get busy on snow days so drive carefully as the road is very narrow and you may need chains.”

“This has to be one of the most unusual boutique cinemas in NZ. A wide variety of films from Blockbusters to Art House are shown several nights a week. Created and operated by locals, one adult ticket is only $10 and the seating consists of mostly donated retro armchairs and couches.”
