Your guide to Stratford-upon-Avon

All About Stratford-upon-Avon

Situated on the picturesque River Avon in the West Midlands in the heart of England, Stratford-upon-Avon is a town of legacy and creativity with more than 800 years of history to explore. Birthplace of one of the world’s most celebrated playwrights, Stratford draws visitors worldwide to its many attractions, including Shakespeare’s Birthplace.

Once a medieval market town drawing traders from surrounding areas, Stratford is still known for thriving independent stores and traditional shopfronts and signs. Rows of black-and-white timbered Tudor buildings set along cobbled streets add to the traditional English feel of the town. Some local buildings date back to the 16th century, reminiscent of a place that the Bard himself would have known. Today, Stratford-upon-Avon is lively with plenty of enthusiasm for its most famous resident and his works. With a strong local theatre and drama scene, there is always a performance to catch while in town.

You’ll also find plenty of bars, restaurants, and riverside businesses to enjoy. The ancient Saxon town of Warwick, which has one of the most intact and impressive surviving medieval castles in the world, is only a 20-minute drive away.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Stratford-upon-Avon

Cottages in Stratford-upon-Avon are very popular in the peak summer months, but just as cosy in other seasons. Consider an autumn visit to see the town and river in all their natural glory. Shakespeare’s birthday is a local day of celebration, with plenty of festivities on the 23rd of April. Following that is the Stratford Literary Festival, which usually takes place at the end of May and draws in many big-name authors. The main attractions of Stratford-upon-Avon are open year-round. If you’d like to see a specific theatre performance, you can check out the announcements on the local event pages.

Top things to do in Stratford-upon-Avon

Shakespeare’s Birthplace

A visit to Stratford-upon-Avon wouldn’t be complete without seeing Shakespeare’s former home. He was born and grew up in this 16th-century timbered house, where he continued to live in the early years of his marriage. You may also want to check out Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, a romantic thatched abode where William’s future wife was born.

Mechanical Art and Design Museum

Known as the MAD museum, this is England’s only mechanical art venue. The exhibition space is full of buttons, contraptions, and gizmos from different artists and creators. From steampunk gadgets to mechanical dinosaurs, the interactive displays inspire creativity and innovation for all ages.

Canal Basin

The Stratford-upon-Avon Canal connects the town to the Grand Union Canal, which reaches the Thames west of London. Once a vital river port, this area has been converted to a marina of pretty houseboats and boat-based businesses. You may even enjoy a cream tea cruise to take in the town from a different angle.
