Holiday Rentals in Tanna

Just booked in Tanna

Stay with us in the tree top house and enjoy the amazing volcano view! Me, my wife and our 6 children will welcome you in our lovely lodge maintained by the local community.
Lodge is situated just opposite the Mt Yasur's entrance. Such perfect location allows you to admire the natural fireworks from balcony of the tree top house. In the house you will find basic bedding, mosquito nets and plastic container for food. You can admire the volcano view while enjoying a meal in our restaurant. Accommodation price includes breakfast, but we'll be happy to prepare lunch and dinner for you as well upon request.
There's a possibility to arrange a lot of trips around the island, so you can: - visit black sand beach - enjoy your time at Custom Village - experience Cargo cult during their weekly celebration - have a swim on the beautiful beach of Port Resolution - join the cannibal show - visit a waterfall - learn how to prepare a lap lap (local delight) - and more - just ask! What's the most important - whenever you want you can admire the beauty of the volcano which is just on the other side of the road!
  • Great location and Thomas is very welcoming.

  • Very nice staff, and so fun to sleep in a tree!

    Louise2017-12-26T00:00:00Z
  • The treehouse at Thomas's place is fantastic, you can even see and hear the volcano from your little balcony! The food was excellent and Thomas has great advice for local places to visit to make the most of your stay.

  • Simply the best option is to book this tree house, wonderfull experience to enjoy the view of the active volcano yassur from a treehouse. The stairs are strong. The tree house has 2 levels on top of each other which in my case were rented out seperately. Ofcourse it is roughing it, toilet and showers are in a hut down at the ladder, clean and ok. For me it was the best one night experience ever, almost did not sleep at all. you can take a tour of the volcane that starts around 4 pm or the one at 3.30 am, if you go for both you get a third visit for free, that might be a good reason to book more than one night with Thomas. Also nice place to eat together with the guests, while watching the volcano, they prepeare nice dinners at reasonable prices.

  • We loved our stay with Thomas and his family. The location could not be any better, the accommodation is literally opposite the volcano entrance. Listening to the volcano rumble and erupt through the night is surreal and amazing. Thomas was full of knowledge and very helpful. His family were very hospitable and the food was absolutely delicious.

  • Amazing tree house with great views of the volcano. Perfect location for the volcano tour and a nice walk to Port Resolution. The guest house is set in nice grounds but is very basic. The breakfast is quite limited in choice but OK.

  • Top tree bungalow has awesome view of volcano! Thomas and Janet are lovely hosts- accomodating and informative for the local tours. Tanna is a bit harder to get around than some of the islands but they do a good job of highlighting all the other activities to do besides the volcano. Good food and if you want to make laplap (which I highly recommend) talk to Janet...and go on the ancestors tour! Beautiful people, beautiful place. Thank you Tanna, Thomas and the volcano in our memory :) Lauren and Rohan

  • Thomas is a very welcoming host, running his family business just opposite the Mt Yasur Volcano's path entrance! Rooms are basic but clean and with good mattresses. The food was very good (best meals we had in Vanuatu) and you can see the Volcano's smoking top from where you eat! Thomas has been very serviceable and kind to us, speaking both french and english, providing plenty of details about the things to do and see around. And basically, seeing the volcano erupting during sunrise is a lifetime experience. Amazing! We recommend!

  • Thomas is an excellent host. After greeting us at the airport, we were driven across Tanna to his perfectly located and authentically presented accommodation. A pre-dawn visit to Mt. Yasur, swimming and lunch at Port Resolution, and visits to traditional villages - such memorable experiences during our 2-night stay!

    Michael2017-12-20T00:00:00Z
  • The owner is very kind and polite. And we was helped by him, so we wanna say big thanks.

    Aiko2017-07-17T00:00:00Z
  • Thomas and his family are very kind hosts - they invited us to do the traditional lap lap meal and we also joined the family to go to the church. The location is perfect to go to the volcano without any transfer (usually quite expensive) as you can just walk across to the entrance. However, we wouldn’t recommend staying more than 3-4 days as there are limited attractions you can walk to nearby, so you would need daily transfers. Also, if you’re staying with young kids, be mindful that the restaurant is more a family kitchen, so probably less predictable in terms of meal time. But perfect for a short stay to enjoy the volcano, the main attraction of the island, in particular if you want to do the morning visit (3am).

    Flo&Stef2018-01-03T00:00:00Z
  • Great place, host and very interesting activities around. Stay a minimum of 2 nights and bring plenty of cash for the volcano tours

    Jorge2017-07-18T00:00:00Z
  • Friendly host Thomas and family are very welcoming and helpful. He picked us up at the airport with a big smile. He arranged for another fellow to return us to the airport when his truck did not work. The location of the accommodation could not be better - literally across the road from the volcano entrance. Great views of the volcano from bungalow and dining room. If you want to do the sunrise tour, you won't have to get up too early to reach the gate! Dinners for 1000 VAT are substantial and never boring - we stayed 4 nights so we can attest to that. Continental breakfasts were only bread and jam, chocolate spread or peanut butter with coffee/ tea. (It would be nice to include fruit.) Thomas had an unfortunate problem with water supply when we were there so we had a full day without any water to flush toilet or wash hands, and there was no bottled water to buy either. Port Resolution is only 2 hrs walk away so we swam at White Beach when there was no shower available. We would have left had water not been supplied eventually. That was the only bad thing about the place.

    Max2017-09-21T00:00:00Z
  • Thomas is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. Hard working, honest Family man. He made our stay really enjoyable, we are very greatful. Thank you for everything Thomas

    Luis Erik2018-01-17T00:00:00Z
  • The place is the best. You can see volcano from the treehouse, best in the atight. Breakfast was bread or punjas with spreads, pretty same like everywhere else. First night we forgot cookies in the room and we had visit by a rat. Second night, we didnt have any food there, but they were still there( you could hear them running around, maybe our neighbours left food somewhere) but you are in jungleit will and It will be same everywhere. Thomas is really nice guy. And be prepared with cash - 5000vuv pp there and back and 10000vuv for first volcano visit, 6000vuv second volcano visit and third is free. there is one atm in the island.

You'll love our place because we are offering something unique that few get to experience - true village life. Be overwhelmed by the stares. Be challenged by the basic conditions of the hut and amenities. But let your heart be touched by the magic of a traditional culture. Allow yourself to be carried away by the traditional dancing and dress. And let the experience change you forever. Prices include freshly cooked village meals and a mountain sunset walk .
Lowiasia Village is a traditional kastom village in Tanna. They live a traditional subsistence lifestyle with garden crops boosted by some kastom dances for tourists and now hosting guests! 'New' kastom uses calico and other materials within their traditional dress or as Chief Lui says "kastom for today".
Tanna is 40km long and 19km wide and a population of approximately 20,000. White Grass Airport is the island's airport. It takes approximately 17 minutes to get from the airport to the main town Lenakel and only an extra 3 minutes to get to the village. Pick up from the airport can be arranged for 2000 Vatu ($A24).
  • A great cultural experience. Seeing the traditional lifestyle and the joys and laughter of the children finding fruit and playing. The friendliness of the people and unique landscape. A simple thatch hut to rest after roast vegetable or labb labb around the fire. Basic living accomodation. If you enjoy the outdoors and camping and culture its a good taste of village family life.

  • What a great experience I just had with Iawilum and her lovely family! They are very nice and kind people, they will make you feel comfortable, like at home, and they will do their best to help you with anything you need. I’ve just spent exactly 2 months in Lowiasia Village. So i think I’ve experimented the kastom life deeply. I can tell to the next guest that I’m French living in Paris and I’m used to and I liked the “comfort” of our western society. I hate camping. In my opinion this life here has nothing to do with camping. You will live with people who inhabit here, in and with the nature, in and with the soil, they are very strong and they communicate with the nature. I admire them. This stay has made me feel good and I hope I will come back soon. For sure you shouldn’t expect a touristic hostel room service. Shower, and toilets are very basic. But come on, if i could do it, then everyone can do it. You should not worry about the food because it’s only fresh vegetables or fruits from the garden. Sometimes they kill a cow or chicken or get fresh fish. I’m impressed with nice dishes they served me with a basic kitchen. One of the first things Iawilum told me is “if our food doesn’t feed your body, you tell me and we will go buy an other one”. So you shouldn’t hesitate to tell her if something is wrong with your stomach, but also try to get used to their food. Me I like it a lot and I eat same dishes as them. Their project to welcome guests is very nice and i hope they will have more and more guests. Trust me, just come here! Also Iawilum is a great guide. She will do her best to organize your trip if you want to visit blue cave, volcano... and so on it’s good to stay with her because some people in the villages around here are not used to see tourists yet, and they are shy to speak (English) to you. But you have nothing to worry about. If one moment you feel not comfortable in Vanuatu, then you just smile to people and continue your way. I think I was not an easy guest for Iawilum, because I was here for my very particular artistic project about my family history. I’ve been asking to her many not common things. I was not a tourist here. And she (and her family) was very happy and touched to support me about my project. She was very helpful and I feel really grateful for everything she did. Iawilum and her father speak well English, and some of her sisters too, if they are here when you come. Iawilum’s mother doesn’t speak English but she understand small as Bislama looks like English, and she is only very adorable. Children are lovely funny and play a lot....

    Camille2018-01-08T00:00:00Z
  • It was a wonderful stay with Lawilum and her family. I was welcomed in and met with such lovely hospitality (and curious kids!). We went for a lovely walk to watch the sunset and another to see the amazing giant banyan tree. If you love to experience culture and local life and want to know that your money is going directly towards helping then this is the place for you! I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and hope to visit again. Amenities are simple but comfortable and I had an awesome stay here. Would highly recommend.

Best Location offers guests the opportunity to stay in a private bungalow in an authentic Tanna village. Experience local coffee, food, waterfalls, black magic, the volcano and other unforgettable Tanna experiences guided by your friendly host, Rex.
Away from the bustle of the city, these authentic bungalows will allow you to experience the real Tanna. You can share in village life, enjoy some peace and privacy, as well as staying close to all of the beautiful attractions of Tanna. Guest have their own private hut (a bungalow sleeps 2), shower and toilet (+ basic amenities). You will have access to fresh organic food grown in the rich volcanic soil, as well as fresh water. You also have you own out door eating area.
The village consists of just over forty people, and there are many other villages to see within walking distance. The area is very friendly, and locals are quick to smile! If you are adventurous, there are several kava bars nearby, and Rex will be happy to show you where to experience this local custom. This is an agricultural area, and many crops and livestock live on the land.
  • I had an absolutely wonderful time staying with Rex and his family. If you are looking to experience the true Tanna way of life, then staying in a homestay is the perfect way to do so. As a solo female traveler, Rex and his family immediately made me feel welcome and safe and wanted me to feel like I had a family away from home. Rex helped arrange any tours I was interested in and any transport I ever needed. Their home is up in the hills with beautiful views of the surrounding forests and gardens. Exchanging stories with him and the rest of his family in their bamboo hut is a memory I will cherish forever! Thank you again Rex!! One tip: There is no wifi or functioning atms on the island so make sure you bring enough cash!

  • This is without a doubt the BEST place you can stay at in Tanna. Rex has an amazing personality and he treats you just like family. I was never lacking comfort or advice, and was able to experience authentic village life. Rex's sons and nephews also took the time to show me around and made me feel part of their warm and welcoming community. The location also allows you to reach major attractions within an hour.

    Thiviya2017-06-24T00:00:00Z
  • We enjoyed our stay in Rex's village. People there are friendly and it's really easy to communicate with Rex. The only drawback for us was the fact that each day should corresponding to one tour (expensive). We were disapointed by the village tour (Loini)which was just a touristic attraction, oherwise we recommend to do the Black magic tour which is great! Definitely a place to stay in Tanna.

    Floriane2017-09-14T00:00:00Z
  • Staying with Rex and his family was easily the best thing we've ever done. We had the most fantastic and comfortable stay, and experiences we took away from Best Location, would FAR surpass the experiences of staying at a resort! It's quite incredible to wake up and feel as though you are in Jurassic Park and that any second a dinosaur might come tearing through the jungle! Rex and his family were both welcoming and completely delightful hosts. Rex made everything easy for us by organising all our tours and arranging transport, whilst his wife Marilyn cooked us delicious meals, and their daughter Jenny took us on tours of the villages and introduced us to her family and friends. We couldn't recommend staying with them more highly, Best Location feels like home.

    Martha2016-07-22T00:00:00Z
  • An incredible place to stay! Our stay on Tanna island was fantastic and made even better by staying at best location. Rex and his family are lovely hosts, very enthusiastic and generous, helping to arrange any activities you want to do. We saw the volcano, the blue cave, went on the Tanna Magic tour, visited a Kustom village, a hike through the island to waterfalls and more. If you plan to come to Tanna and want to have a fun and authentic experience, meeting the locals and learning about their history and culture, then staying here is an absolute must!

    Henry2016-02-22T00:00:00Z
  • We spent an unforgetable Christmas with Rex and his family. We felt like at home. Bungalows are very cute in the middle of the nature. Lucky to taste yummy local and organic food because Marilyn is a 'Masterchef'. Rex always helps you and there are a range of things to do: Magic Tour, Volcano or whatever you want! Thanks you for let us discover the real and authentic Tanna. Definetely, THE BEST LOCATION, THE BEST PLACE AND THE BEST PEOPLE.

    MARIA2017-12-26T00:00:00Z
  • Nice host and nice location with the forest around and bungalow on top of a hill. No mosquitos and very fresh! Rex and Eric organised our staying and we planned together what to do asking tips and advices. We obtained a good deal package of tours for a reasonable price. We recommend a day of vulcano (which is always in the afternoon) and hot spring (make sure you ask for the ones near port resolution, as we didn't know they brought us the other ones but they were sill nice) and second day custom village and blue cave! We loved those tours. One day we also walked by ourselves to the waterfall that is about 1.5 hours from the place. It was very worth it! Food was also good, manly fresh potatoes and eggs. Wifi was not available but it was nice to be away from our phones and relaxed in the nature for some days :) Also Rex can provide some internet for some minutes in case it is needed. I would surely recommend staying here for a couple of days! :)

    Cecilia2018-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • Spent 3 lovely days with Rex and his family at Tanna Magic. Located about 10 km from Whitegrass airport, the bungalow is a 15-20 minute drive on a fairly rough road. We were able to organize all our tours through Rex (Mt Yasur volcano, black magic, village walk, snorkeling) which was convenient. The bungalow itself is perfect for anyone who wants an authentic village stay experience although we were surprised to have electricity at night (able to charge our USB devices). Rex's wife (Marlene) is a great cook so you won't go hungry. Just one tip is to bring lots of cash since Vanuatu is a pricey destination and everything costs a lot, more than you might expect!

Mike Sam and his family are delighted to offer you an authentic local accomodation situated on a hill amidst pristine rainforest, perfectly overlooking Mt Yasur. Watch natural fireworks from your dining table! Eruptions occur every 20 mins.
There is a good network reception (Digicel). A separate dinner area is located next to your bungalows. Mike's family will cook for you and serve a variety of healthy and delicious local style food, including local dishes made with root vegetables (manioc, taro, kumala, yam), coconut milk, island cabbage, breadfruit, rice, fish, chicken etc. Additional fees apply. A small kitchen with cooking facilities, clean toilet and bathroom are all available for your use for free.
Uniquely nestled in the pristine rainforest meeting black volcanic sandland and next to a crystal clean river, Mike's bungalows offer you a perfect view to the Mt Yasur volcano as they are situated on a small hill overlooking the eruptions.
  • The most amazing authentic experience. Mike and his family made us feel like part of their village when sharing their local lifestyle, food and the incredible landscape surrounding the bungalow. If you want to really experience Tanna book right now. We spent every morning and evening watching the volcano Mt Yasur shooting glowing rocks in to the sky from the comfort of Mikes bungalows. During the day we adventured to the Sulphur Bay hot springs and bodysurfed in the hot water, relaxed on the white sands of Port Resolution drinking fresh coconut water and experienced a local celebration.

    Sam2016-09-26T00:00:00Z
  • Overall very good... Mike is very helpful. He is reliable and very courteous. Water is drinkable although boiling is recommended. Bungalows are good, but Volcanoe ash is everywhere. Only one negative-- food hygiene is nill. (Boiled food only)... or take your own.

    Don 2017-10-01T00:00:00Z
  • Absolutely amazing. Be aware that anything else is extra cost, travel food etc but that is perfectly normal. The view is spectacular and a really authentic experience not to be missed

    Belinda2016-09-07T00:00:00Z
  • This was an amazing spot! We were picked up at the airport and got a hell of a fantastic ride to the bungalow! This was like being part of a Top Gear episode(!). The roads were so bad that it was funny, we loved how he handled all the bumps and the really really steep dirt track hills up to the bungalow! Amazing! The bungalow had a tiny lovely porch where we sat each night watching the volcano erupt below the bright Milky Way! Mezmerizing! Two of my most amazing experiences ever - COMBINED! Mike took us to the site where we could experience the volcanic tour as well, and picked us up after. Great host! As light is limited bring a couple of flashlights (also for the volcanic tour)! If u bring a camera - remember a tripod to get nice pictures of the Milky Way as well. Ash from the volcano may make your clean clothes dirty in notime, keep them in a sealed bag. There is almost nothing to get hold of on Tanna, so bring your consumables with you. Like, special dietary food, beer, wine, soda, snacks etc. And cash, cash is king here, no plastic! But all in all - this is a place I do really recommend if going to Tanna!

    Fredrik2016-08-04T00:00:00Z
  • Great location close to Mt. Yasur. We didn't get to meet Mike as he was away when we were there but his wife Lena was very nice and looked after us for the duration of our stay.

    Sam2017-06-09T00:00:00Z
  • Bungalow is in a great location with a nice view of the volcano from afar. Walk to the volcano about 40 mins but not difficult. Bungalow is basic but comfortable with a shared flush toilet. Breakfast for us was just bread with peanut butter and jam until it ran out. There are also simple shops but bring what your baggage allowance will allow for anything extra item you may want, recommend making a stop at the market if you can! Mike and Sam were very polite and knowledgeable but we personally didn't get the family/cultural experience that others have commented on. Mike seemed busy and distracted so perhaps not his usual demeanor and we don't judge him for this. We would consider staying again as we liked the quiet location.

    Carly2016-11-02T00:00:00Z
  • Best spot of the Mont Yasur view! I could hear the volacno erupting at night which was a great experience. Mike did arrange the tours and cab pick-ups. I highly recommend this place!

    Fatima2017-08-12T00:00:00Z
  • I stayed at Yasur view bungalow for 2 nights. The location is great, view is amazing! Mike is friendly and we talked a lot together. Bungalow is basic but good enough, there's shared flush toilet and shower (not really good but you can still use it). Breakfast was included (coffee/tea, bread and fruits), you can also have dinner there for an extra cost. Mike arranged everything for me. My only bad point was the prices, I am traveling alone and I had to pay everything for two people even if some other people were there with me. So it makes everything really expensive. Otherwise I've had a good stay here!

My place is two traditional bungalows I built myself. It's located at 40 min drive from the airport, 15 min walk from friendly beach and 15 min drive to the volcano and hot springs. Each bungalow can fit two people, and a small bed for a child on request. In staying in my place, you will share the local life of the people of the village, eating local food like LapLap, soumboro, seafood, and organic products from my garden.
I have a pick up car, which is essential to travel around Tanna island. On request, i can pick you at the airport/ferry terminal, drive you to the highsights of Tanna and show you the island for a small price. We will organise all of that by chat on airbnb or directly at my place. Most of the stores are in Lenakel, you can buy all your food and essentials at your arrival in Tanna Island. Otherwise, my family and myself are happy to organize breakfast, lunch and dinner for you, in exchange of a small fee we can discuss on airbnb or directly at my place.
You will be living in a quiet neighborhood on the road to friendly beach. It's a quiet place, most of the people are living in family and everybody knows each other.
  • We had a wonderful three-night stay with Malakai in his comfortable new bungalow. The bungalow was quiet and secure with an excellent bed and the clean shower and loo are very nearby. Every morning our room was decorated with fresh tropical flowers. Netty is an excellent cook and we enjoyed hearty meals including island beef and vegetables, and chicken and eggs from the village. Malakai organised our airport transfers and excursions to Mt Yasur and some local volcanic springs in his truck so we got to see a lot of the beautiful scenery in Tanna. The local black sands beach is incredible and photos do not do it justice. The soft sand is perfect for sunbathing or swimming and is only a 10 minute walk away! It was great to meet other people from the village and their lovely children, and everyone was very kind and welcoming. We highly recommend a stay with Malakai at Tanna Yasur Homestay to experience Tanna with a knowledgable guide, and it is also a perfect place to relax between excursions.

    Will2017-06-01T00:00:00Z
  • We absolutely loved staying at Tanna Yasur Homestay. Malakai is an excellent host and guide. Also, the accommodation is lovely - beautiful thatch roof huts with very comfortable beds. It's also only a ten minute walk from a very nice volcanic sand beach with really beautiful coral just offshore. The food was tasty and traditional including things like local fruits and veg and Vanuatan classics like laplap. We really enjoyed our two small activities we were able to do - a kastom dance in a nearby village and a walk along the ash plain to the bottom of Mt. Yasur with Malakai himself. The ash plain was out of this world. Felt like Mars for sure. And the kastom activities were lovely - we really enjoyed the lap lap, weaving demonstration, and the music. If I have one recommendation it's that you bring plenty of cash as that's the only way to pay for activities once you arrive on Tanna. Unfortunately we didn't research things well and missed the fact that the hike to Yasur's crater is 9750 vatu per person. We didn't have quite enough for that, unfortunately. Also keep in mind that transport to and from the homestay via 4WD will be 5000 vatu each way. Overall, we had such a great time with Malakai and friends. The place felt like a lovely little home away from home.

    Emmett2017-07-11T00:00:00Z
  • The house is very cute and built in the traditional way, dinners and breakfasts are delicious and it was nice to live in the family village. Everybody is smiling, it’s interesting to talk to the people and the chief village, discover their pace of life, to follow the fisher and be guided through the jungle. Only one bad point, Malakai announced a price for an activity and once we had to pay (after the activity) the price was more than the double of what was expected... sadly that let a bitter taste to the visit. I would still recommend this place if you put everything on paper before to do activity ( to avoid pretended misunderstanding )

    Stéphane2018-01-06T00:00:00Z
  • Thank you Malakai & family & friends for having us. We really appreciated your hospitality, thoroughly enjoyed your awesome traditional bungalows, tasty meals from local fresh produce and for organising tours around the beautiful Tanna Island for us. Celebrating the New Year’s eve with the local community was an experience we will remember forever. We wish you health, happiness and good luck with growing your business. Note to future travellers: there is now ATM in Lenakel you can use if you are running short on cash.

  • We had a fantastic 3-night stay with Rex and his family! It was the highlight of our 10-day trip to Vanuatu, and Tanna was by far our favorite island. There are three bungalows for visitors that are all right next to each other. They share a shower and drop toilet. These facilities were clean and well-maintained. It is nice to have the bungalows together because you can get to know other travelers (for us that was a young couple from France and a young man from Switzerland) during your meals and evening downtime. You will have toast and tea/coffee for breakfast (included with your accommodation), and one of three options (two meat, one vegetarian) for dinners that you pay for at the end of the stay. These range from (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) vatu per meal. These meal choices are limited (as a vegetarian I had an omelette for every lunch/dinner while we were there, and at times only one of the two meat options was available for my partner). The meals are filling and quite adequate, but it's worth being aware that you won't have many options. One thing we really would have loved was to try more of the local/traditional cuisine. For example, one day we were able to help make the traditional taro dish, Laplap, with some of the young adults from the village. This was what they were preparing for their families for dinner that night and it was interesting to learn how to make. But we did not get to taste it or join them for dinner. The meals you eat will be made for tourists, and although Rex, his brother Eric, or their children will sit and chat and play games with you while you eat (we had some fascinating conversations over dinner!), they do not eat their meals with you. Trying the local meals would have enhanced an already fantastic experience. Staying with Rex is a fantastic way to experience life on Tanna. Rex will organize all the activities you wish you do during your visit and will provide transport. There is really no other way to do it if you are going to stay here (it would be nearly impossible to organize outside transport or tours). We spent the first full day driving across the island to Port Resolution (black sand beach where Captain Cook originally landed in Tanna), visiting a natural hot spring in the ocean, and of course, doing the night tour of Mt. Yasur Volcano. The next day, we took a boat to the Blue Cave where we swam, snorkeled, and jumped off the platforms into the water. In the afternoon we helped to prepare food and take care of the animals in the village. The experiences were all amazing! It is important to know a few things though: 1. Bring a lot of cash. There is one ATM at a resort about 10-15 min away from the village that Rex can take you to, but it's better to come prepared. To...

Best Location offers guests the opportunity to stay in a private bungalow in an authentic Tanna village. Experience local coffee, food, waterfalls, black magic, the volcano and other unforgettable Tanna experiences guided by your friendly host, Rex.
  • I stayed one night with Rex and his lovely family in February. The accommodation is set in a beautiful location with well looked after gardens. Because Rex was in town doing business, his brother Eric looked after me. Eric arranged for me to take part in the 'Black Magic' tour, which was great fun! His daughter Sarah showed me around their village and introduced me to the extended members of the family. Everyone I met was nothing but welcoming. I felt right at home at Rex's place and only regret that I could not stay longer.

  • We loved our stay with Rex, Eric and Martha! Everyone was very welcoming and lovely. There's many villages you can walk too and everyone is happy to see you and loves to chat. You'll also never be hungry - Martha's cooking is delish and filling (and cheap!) :) Our room was a different room to the photos but a bed which is what we needed and be prepared for cold showers! Also note that pick up and drop off at the airport is 2000vt each way which we were not aware of, and another thing to be aware of is when you're not doing tours there's not a whole lot to do and you don't have much independence in the way of transport and getting around, so there's lots of lazy time to be had. We got to do all the activities we came to do, I'd recommend staying with Eric and Rex! Thank you for having us!

  • We were collected from the airport by Eric (Rex's brother) and John who was the driver. They knew we wanted to see the volcano so worked quickly to make sure we got to do this. On arriving at the hut, Eric's wife greeted us with a warm welcome and flower garland. We also met Rex and his wife. John was an expert driver who knew the road well. Eric was a wealth of local information and made sure our stay was all we wanted.

  • Our stay at the Best Location Bungalow gave us the authentic Tanna experience we were after. It really is authentic (solar power, long drop) and we were immersed in to village life. Eric, Martha, Rex and their families were welcoming, accommodating and genuinely wanted us to have a great stay with them. Martha's cooking is delicious homemade meals with enough to feed a small army! We even spent a lunchtime cooking local dishes (from Vanuatu and our country). The highlight for us was the blue caves and afternoon that followed. After the blue caves we spent the afternoon having lunch (beautifully prepared by Martha) at the beach with the family. We fished, swam, ate and chatted with the family. We enjoyed it almost as much as the little kids who were ecstatic to have scored a day off school to join us at the beach! Thank you for the most amazing time.

  • We had a wonderful time staying with Rex and Mariline. Welcoming hosts, beautiful garden, comfortable hut and great local food. The place is tucked away quietly amongst villages and tropical forrest, but not too far out from the airport or town. Rex made it incredibly easy for us to get around and explore Tanna and was able to give us a clear idea of what the transport and attractions would cost.

    Ellie2017-07-08T00:00:00Z
  • Staying in Tanna with Rex and his family was an incredible and truly unique experience. The bungalows are located on Rex's property on top of a hill offering fantastic morning views and a peaceful and relaxing environment. Living in this small village gave us insight into the lifestyle the real people of Tanna. It was truly a different experience compared to staying at the resorts. Marilyn's cooking was delicious and very reasonably priced. The meals compromised of the villages own local produce and Lap Lap made by Marilyn at their house. Rex was very organised and made sure we had time to do everything we wanted during our stay. I would definitely reccomend doing the 'Black Magic' tour which has been organised by Rex's family and those in his village. It explains many customs of the villages and is great fun. And of course the volcano was fantastic! Ask Rex about the best day and time to go if you are there for a few days. Although definitely worth it, the volcano is quite expensive to visit (35,000 vatu for 2 people) so remember to bring enough cash as there is no ATM on the island. Overall, we had a fantastic time and enjoyed spending time with the family. Be sure to try and make Rex and his brother Eric laugh, you won't be able to help laughing along with them. Thank you so much for having us, we had a fantastic time! Isaac & Naomi

  • Rex is an amazing host. We love his personality, attitude, and the way he see the things. Place is nice and tidy. He encoraged us to walk around and talk to them, we had a really local experience, and although the location is inland (consider transport cost for tours), it gave us the opportunity to meet a nice village. Food is good and price fair comparing similar places

    Elisabet2018-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • Rex was not in tanna but his brother Erik welcomed us as a member of their family. Their hospitality and happiness are contagious. Tanna itself is a great experience, with them was even better. They arrange everything for us including the meals which was prepared by Marta, Erik's lovely wife.

Welcome. This Bungalow is nestled into a quiet spot in the picturesque & friendly village, Imaio (meaning 'My Home') at the base of Yusar Volcano. Make yourself at home in our Bungalow and village. We offer you a very unique and spectaculars cultural experience where you will never and ever experience again.
It is a large Bungalows with 6 single beds and 4 double bed with a single in each four Rooms. Set away from our house and in a beautiful spot in our village. Fresh bedding and clean towels are provided. You can see the volcano glowing through the trees and hear it rambling from your bungalow.
Imaio meaning 'My Home' village is next to Yasur Volcano, the most accessible, active volcano in the world. We, the Karumene meaning 'The Forgotten Tribe' are the traditional custodians of Yasur. My village offers many tours including custom dancing, a cannibal show, Yasur volcano, mountain hiking, hot springs, Nazareth waterfall, swiming holes and tours to Port Resolution. There are restaurants, handcrafts for sale and a shop. People here are very friendly and welcoming. There is limited power but accessible to wifi where it is unexpected and surprising to be used in the jungle. Please realise this is a tradition village so if you are wanting a unique cultural experience, this is a great place to get it. Please be aware we build using natural resources from the land and things are different here than western styles. We have a flush toilet yet most toilets in our village are well made long drops and our showers are not always warm. (as most places here on Tanna)
  • This must have been one of the most exciting, yet tough, experiences ever. If you are expecting luxury than this isn't for you. Jeff and his wife Julie were so welcoming and warm towards us that made our stay smooth. Jeff had arranged a pick up from the airport and two hours later we arrived at their village. The driver will stop at Lenakel, the only town in Tanna, if you want to. I would suggest you to buy a lot of water, baby wipes, mosquito coil, insect repellent and some fruits for the length of your stay. The family will provide breakfast, lunch and dinner for a price, agreed upon arrival. Be prepared for the generator to work 2-3 hours only and at night time, maybe not shower every day. The food Julie prepared is delicious although picky / fussy eaters will go hungry. Enjoy the moment and remember this is where they live, you will be going home after. Respect their culture and customs.

  • I stayed in Jeffet's bungalow with my friend Niles, and it was a truly unforgettable experience. I recommend this AirBnB for anyone who wants a true "off the beaten path" experience in Vanuatu. Even then drive from the airport was an adventure! The food our hosts prepared for us was delicious, I would recommend it! We were able to visit the rim of the volcano twice, and take a lovely swim in the river.

    Rebecca2015-12-22T00:00:00Z
  • One of the most beatiful places to stay on Tanna island! Do you want to experience something extraordinary? Try to stay at Jeffet´s bungalow with his family and you wont regret anything! Jeffet is really nice host and will always do his best to help you with everything you need. His bungalow is simple and basic but If you are not looking for luxury hotels and resorts then you wont mind. And that view on Yasur volcano every night...priceless! I would definitely recommend this place to everyone who wants see a real Tanna.

  • If you really want to experience the real Tanna culture, stay in Imaio village with Jeffet. All his villagers were kind and helpful. Also their brilliant smiles made me feeling good. I learned how to traditionally prepare lap-lap, Vanuatu's best local food. It was cooked by earth ovens. That should be also quite interesting for you guys, I think. He can organize transportation. So you don't need to worry about that. Also I would like to recommend you to enjoy their activities such as traditional dance, volcano tour and hot springs. My best memory on Tanna is to drink kava at their nakamal with their chief and villagers. Some villagers explained me how important Nakamal and kava are for their culture. Imaio means "my home" in English. Yes, I enjoyed staying in their village as my real home! One day I would like to go back to Imaio, my home!

  • I would definitely recommend staying with Jeffet in Imaio village if you want to see the real life in Tanna island. If you are seeking for luxury 4* hotel you should stay away, but otherwise you will be welcome with big smiles. It is a lovely village close to Yasur volcano so you can see the night "firework" right from your bungalow :) Jeffet and his wife are always there to help you, arrange a transport or show you around. The cultural shows in Imaio village were really good and right in the village so we did not have to travel to other custom villages :) You should definitely consider to order your meal with them, because Jeffet's wife cooks wonderfull yummy dishes :D Hopefully we will come back one day ;)

    Tereza2016-10-24T00:00:00Z
  • This is very basic living but such a great experience. Jeffet organised for us to picked up from the airport. The drive across the island to Jeffet's place is about 2 hours on a rough road but the scenery is breathtaking and the locals know how to drive on these roads.

    Hilary2016-05-04T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed at Jeffet's place for 3 nights and it was nothing short of spectacular. Jeff and his family organized multiple tours and trips for us each day during our stay, our favourite by far was the cannibal show. The accommodation is basic, but that is to be expected as you are in a village in the jungle. If you are not the "camping" type, this is not the place for you. We also recommend bringing snacks either from Port Villa or the main market area once you land in Tanna. Of course, the highlight of our time in Tanna was mount yasur, absolutely incredible. We did the sunrise tour and I highly recommend that you do too. We had the entire Volcano to ourselves. The sunset tour on the other hand has upwards of 100 people crammed together making it a leas authentic experience. All in all, an unbelievable stay, you get to experience Tanna like a local and see a different side of the island that the average tourist does not. Thanks Jeff!

  • Jeffet and his wife did their best to make my stay in Imaio perfect. They can organize tours to the volcano (either driving or around 1 hour walking), traditional dances, cannibal tours,... The food they cook for you comes straight from their garden and tastes delicious. While in or around your bungalow, you can hear the volcano erupt every few minutes, which is incredibly impressive. Right in front of the bungalow, you have a view of the volcano and you can even see the lava coming out at times. Jeffet also took me to a nice river where he likes to swim with his family. If you want to see the real Tanna, I recommend you to stay here rather than in a hotel!

Everything here, including the restaurants, bungalows, showers and toilets are made local style so please do not expect 'resort' or western style accommodations. Our bungalow and village offer you a full traditional way of life and living.

  • Accommodation is in comfortable huts with direct (stunning) view of the volcano. We enjoyed watching the lavaworks from bed and falling asleep. Huts are located a short distance from the village Imaio. Richard is a friendly, caring, knowledgeable man and a great chef (thanks for the Tanna soup recipe!), and we felt very welcome there by the whole family. Richard can organise a driver for day trips, or you can explore the forest, the ash plains and the nearby villages on foot. Folks in the village are lovely and excited about visitors (don't be shy :)). Overall a very nice experience, and a great way to experience staying in one of the remote villages on Tanna.

  • Richard and his family have a wonderful and beautiful place in paradise. I had a great time and only wish it could have been longer so I could have gotten to know the community in the village nearby better. The place is as traditional as possible which really makes it unique and special. Oh and there is a great view of Mt Yasur which is absolutely amazing to see and hear, especially at night.

    David2017-11-10T00:00:00Z
  • I knew our stay on Tanna would be amazing, but nothing could prepare me for what we experienced. When we landed on the island the first thing I heard was a clap of thunder - I later found out that was the volcano. Richard's place has an amazing view of the volcano and the ash plain. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming. The accommodation is very basic which is exactly what I wanted for our get away. It really is a get away (from everything). Yes you can see the volcano from the hut - Amazing!! Going to sleep with the glowing amber from the spits lava in the distance. I couldn't imagine a better way to experience Tanna. I really enjoyed the walks we did guided by Mary, we walked to the volcano, ash plain and hot springs. None were short walks but it was great experiencing the island on foot, picking mangoes as we traveled and using palm leaves as umbrellas. Tanna was a very memorable trip!!

    Katie2017-01-28T00:00:00Z
  • If you want to have a special stay in Tanna and live with the locals for fees days this is what you will have here. The village is just in front of the volcano you can hear it and see it from your bungalow. The bungalows are in a really nice garden. If you walk to the village you will meet the people and they all very friendly and curious. The meals provided for 1000 VT are really nice and you won't be hungry after trust me. Richard and Susan can arrange you the transfers to go around their places. The place is peaceful perfect to have a rest and visit the fabulous volcano.

    Céline2016-08-24T00:00:00Z
  • View is magnificent but we left the place thinking we had been ripped off: $75 for a hut as basic as it can be (that's more than a flat in Sydney!) $60 per person for transport from/to airport $12 for a bowl of rice with 2 eggs (only meal available) $140 for going to the volcano (double what the host told us it would cost) With honest prices it would be a great experience though

    Guenièvre2017-09-15T00:00:00Z
  • My trip to Tanna was a real experience. Staying in traditional village with the best view on Yasur was awesome. Vista lodge was simple but clean. Confotable bed with mosquito nets. But during our stay they wasn't any mosquito . The food was very good. The service too. They came to pick up us at the airport and organize all activity. The kava tradition experience was unforgettable. The place is very safe and very welcoming. Richard was really on top of is game. I will recommend this place to anybody looking for adventure and immersion in Tanna culture with the most amazing view. We will most definitely be coming back to visit again ! 5stars

    Laurent2016-06-29T00:00:00Z
  • You would be hard pressed to find anywhere in Tanna that has better panoramic views of the volcano from your doorstep!

    Katie2017-02-07T00:00:00Z
  • The location of Richard's huts is really fantastic, with beautiful views of the bush, and of the volcano in the distance. The gardens are really nice, and you can see that a lot of effort have gone into them. The huts are very basic, as described, with no electricity and a shared outside toilet and the shower is a cold water tap, fixed up high. We found that pretty much as expected, but we were not too happy with sheets that were not clean, (gritty from the sand that is everywhere, and presumably from previous guests). One of our huts had rats visiting during the night. The worst part of our visit was that we were not picked up from the airport until 90 minutes after landing time, and then the next day Richard did not come to pick us up, so we had to wait all day with no where to go, worried that we wouldn't get to the volcano in the evening. We were a family of 4 adults and 2 small children, so we were looking forward to taking the kids to the waterfall, or to the natural pool. Richard did turn up to take us to the volcano and that was a real once in a lifetime experience. Suggest that you bring your own sheets, or sleeping bags, and also make very sure that you have agreed on a price for the accommodation and whether that price does or does not include meals (which are beautifully cooked by Marta and Mary). We found the whole trip to be a very expensive exercise, and that we did not really get value for money.

My two bedroom tree house (Bungalow) sits on top of a huge Banyan tree. From the balcony you can see the impressive Yasur Volcano and at night the red glow of the frequent eruptions light up the skyline in spectacular visual display of nature’s unbridled power (eruptions occur about every 20 minutes). Your visit and overnight stay will truly be the unforgettable experience of a life time. My tree house can accommodate four in two bedrooms (double and two single beds).

There is good mobile network reception (Digicel). Beds have mosquito nets and the tree house is made of local materials. Hot water can be arranged by the staff for your showers, just ask your host.
My family and I live a couple of minutes walk away. The Tree House is not inside a village so your privacy will be ensured.
  • This accommodation is very nice and quite recommendable! Tom and Peterson (Toms brother in law) picked us up at the Tanna Airport right in time and gave us a ride to Toms place (4kms to Mt. Yasur). It is about 1,5 hours drive from the Airport. They are very friendly and give all the information you need. The family of Tom is also very nice and loveable! his wife cooks great meals for an affordable price in the evening and breakfast (simple: bread, peanutbutter and coffee) is included. The Treetophouse itself is very nice (arranged and decoratedand) and clean (every day cleaned by Hannah, Toms wife). It provides a spacious double bed (one room, the other one is two singles) with mosquito net and a small „terrace“ with a mindblowing view on the volcano! The amenities are simple but clean. Be aware that in the mt. Yasur region no flush toilets can be provided by the locals but they do really everything they can, to enable you the best stay possible! The hole community is very friendly and generous and has a great hospitality. We really enjoyed our stay! Tom took us to Port Resolution and white beach for a walk (1,5 hours walk) and in the evening you can go or drive to the entrance of mt.yasur to view a terrific once in a lifetime experience! This was one of our greatest trips we ever made and we are truly thankful to Tom and his family for their hospitality! We would always come back! A little advice to all travelers who want to visit the volcano: take shoes (no flip flops) a torch light and a rain coat/jacket with you (just in case)..

    Johannes2017-12-09T00:00:00Z
  • Tom's treehouse is a two bedroom treehouse at the top of a Banyan Tree with a view of the volcano. Its location is perfect and Tom picked us up from the airport on arrival and dropped us back to the airport to leave. We were welcomed warmly by Tom, Naomi and the family on arrival and they were such great hosts for the duration of the trip. The bathroom and dining area/kitchen are separate (and downstairs) from the treehouse. The family live about 50 metres from the treehouse and welcomed us every morning with boiling water, tea and coffee and breakfast. They even cooked us a local dinner on the second night which we ate with them whilst sitting by the fire. It is very much a home stay and such a great insight into the lives of local Tanna people. They organised the volcano tour, cultural tour (a must do), a trip to Port Resolution (where they come with us and picked us fresh coconuts and guavas to eat on the way) and a waterfall on the way to the airport on the last day. Overall such a fantastic experience and could not have asked for a better place to stay on Tanna!

    Kat2017-08-09T00:00:00Z
  • My partner and I had an amazing stay at the treehouse. Tom was a great host and catered for all our needs and requests and went above and beyond to make us happy. Tom and his family cooked for us, the local food which is lap lap and simboro is amazing. You have to try it. We all had a really fun game of soccer together and whenever we wanted to go somewhere he organised it for us. There are a few little harmless critters around the place but Tom was still more than happy to remove them for us. The location is very central to Mt Yasur volcano and was one of the highlights of our trips.

Guests can enjoy a drink at the bar, connect to the wifi and purchase essential supplies at the on-site shop. There are excellent hiking and swimming options, along with guided tours and bike hire. Airport transfers and tours can be easily arranged with your host Kelson.
The bungalows are right near the volcano entrance and surrounded by lush gardens. Several styles are available to suit your needs.
  • Jungle Oasis’ location is one of the very few to be REALLY next to the volcano (3mn walk to the entrance), which is convenient especially for the sunrise tour (that starts at 3.30am) or to go ashboarding. Kelson is a fantastic guest and we enjoyed our stay very much. Being very active in the tourism industry for decades, he is very knowledgeable about the region, and helped us to organise various visits and drivers. He also gives a very personal touch: he welcomed us with local coconuts and sang a few songs during dinner, which was very entertaining. Breakfast and dinner, prepared by his wife Joyce are good value. Bungalows are very simple but nice. Bathroom / toilet area could be upgraded, but Kelson is still improving facilities, rebuilding everything by himself after the 2015 cyclone PAM destroyed nearly everything.

Everyone is welcome! You will have your own bungalow with beachview, King Size bed, own toilet and shower, electricity and power plugs, towels provided and breakfast included. My family is happy to welcome you!
Our family hosted bungalow is right at the beautiful white sand beach, just 10min walk from shops and restaurants in Lenakel town center. Pick up from airport provided for 500VUV - just text me your time of arrival :-)
We are located in our private peace of land right at the beach so it will be nice and quiet. It's just the family's house, one more tourists bungalow and the restaurant. We love to share the relaxed Tanna atmosphere with you!
  • Tom and his family are incredibly welcoming and friendly. The bungalow is in a lovely location right on the sea and not too far from the airport or main town of Lenakel. The food was also delicious!

  • We had a great stay at Tom's place, Marta's cooking was so delicious! The bungalows we're very cute, and the paintings on the inside walls of them were beautiful. Not the best of you're looking for easy access to swimming, but gorgeous views and surroundings. If you're planning a trip to Tanna just make sure that you bring all the necessary cash with you for activities, it's not cheap but all is very very worth it.

  • I stayed with Tom and Martha at their bungalows back in 2013 and they have done a wonderful job rebuilding after the devastating effects of Cyclone Pam. The bungalows are beautifully done and have a lovely location on the beach and about a 20 minute walk to Lenakel. Meals are large and tasty. Would stay here again!

  • Hidden Treasure is a great place to stay. The location on the beach is really wonderful. Initially I couldn't easily find a way to interact with it due to the lava band between beach and ocean. I suggest that you ask specifically how and where to get into the water....then it is bliss and the snorkling is fabulous. Martha, Tom and their family are very welcoming and generous. Their 2 staff women are very caring and Nancy is a very good cook. Meals included locally caught lobster and fish. The place is well care for and they are constantly making improvements. I felt cared for and very grateful for this beautiful space.

  • Very nice place, look better than on pictures. Thomas was very helpful. Very good food at their restaurant.

  • The place is very peacefull : no noise, no car, sea view, nice garden. We saw every days many wales in front of the bungalow. It was amazing!! We walked a lot of time on the beach in front of the bungalow. People around the place are very friendly. It's almost 25 min walk to the center of this little town. Meals are generous, very tasty, locals and diversified (vegetables, fish, chicken, beef and eggs). Quality-price is very good (1000 vt per dinner per person). Tom can pick-up and drop off to airport for 500vt per person. Equipments are very basics but enough if you don't want luxuous : shower (warm during the day), toilets, sink. It's not possible to cook. We are satisfied about our stay.

  • Beautiful Location. Amazing rock pools to explore right in front and a short walk to areas suitable for swimming. Comfortable walk into the local town with shops etc. Tom and his wife Martha were great hosts and willing to share their local knowledge. Tom was happy to arrange transport for tours or transfers just confirm if it is for the trip or per person. There is little opportunity to get money on Tanna so take as much cash as you will think you will need plus some :) Accommodation is basic but serviceable and if possible we would stay again. We arrived as customers and left as friends.

Best spot of the Mont Yasur view! I could hear the volacno erupting at night which was a great experience. Mike did arrange the tours and cab pick-ups. I highly recommend this place!
